Wow. The last days of 2003.
Insert your standard end-of-the-year-and-boy-wasn’t-it-swell speech here, and I’ll sign my name to it, but don’t be too surprised at my lack of fanfare for the fading numeral 2003 — after all, there are still nine months left on my calendar, and I’m a big fan of the future.
This is a quick Jack Rabbit, in the midst of a crazy holiday schedule (no JRS last week; hope everything was wonderful out there.) A little announcement here, a little request there, and a couple of upcoming events, including New Year’s Eve in New Zealand, and then we’re off into the night…

TEMPLE OF GRAVITY FINDS A HOME
A piece of the Burning Man event will be in Southern California for the next three years.
The Temple of Gravity, an 80-ton rock and steel structure was installed at the We Care Spa, 18000 Long Canyon Road, Desert Hot Springs, in December and will be on exhibit there for the next three years.

GEORGE BUSH’S HEAD MISSING
I am curious if anyone can tell me what happened to George Bush’s head, after Burning (George) Bush was decapitated early Saturday morning. See page 2 of physics.ucla.edu/marty/bm03 for details. I can imagine it went on to become a glorious part of someone’s camp or mutant vehicle or was sacrificed in a purification rite. Any eyewitness accounts or pictures would be appreciated.

NEW ZEALAND BURNS A MAN THIS NYE
NZ burners, take note: Burning Man comes to New Zealand this New Year’s Eve, via the Visionz festival…
“I am going to stage the first New Zealand regional Burning Man event at Visionz festival in Golden Bay, Nelson Province, South Island, New Zealand at New Years eve. In short, I have been granted permission to burn a mini-Burning Man at the festival. The man I will burn is home-built, and about 12 ft high.
The man will be adorned with illustrations and brief descriptions of the actual Burning Man event. At the time of the burn I lead a procession of belly dancers and drummers to the site of the man, perhaps make a brief explanation of the significance of the Burning Man, and then light kerosine-soaked cloth running from the feet of the man up through the torso and to the arms. (JRS Note: Mark also assures us he’ll leave no trace of his burn, of course!)
The event will be something of a spectacle at Visionz. It will bring Burning Man to New Zealand for the first time for all present and future kiwi burners, and help to forge a link between the similar cultures that make up the Burning Man and Visionz festivals.

REVEREND BILLY AND THE STOP SHOPPING GOSPEL CHOIR

The anti-consumerist Church of Stop Shopping kicks off the election year with a funeral for fear. Reverend Billy confronts the sentimental patriotism of the Bush thugs and reclaims Ground Zero as a locus of peace and possibility.
The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir, 25 voices strong, joyously celebrates the victory.
Reverend Billy is the creation of Obie award winner artist Bill Talen. The Church of Stop Shopping is an interactive play directed by Savitri Durkee, musical director Benny key, conductor James Solomon Benn. Reverend Billy and The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir were invited performers at The Burning Man Festival and can be seen regularly at their home stage in New York, St Mark’s Church.
This show is the first installment in a national tour that will include the New Hampshire Primary, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oregon, and California, and international appearances in Berlin, London, and Barcelona. Bill Talen’s book What Should I do if Reverend Billy is in My Store was recently published by The New Press. Reverend Billy and The Church of Stop Shopping have been the subject of numerous American and European documentaries. Tomato Records will release a CD of their work in Spring, 2004.
