Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks!
Volume 8, Issue 22
March 25, 2004
Greetings from sunny BMHQ! Straight to the news – it’s a busy week in Black Rock City…
If you haven’t yet cleared off your calendar for Saturday, April 3, here’s your reminder about the Spring Volunteer Recruitment Town Hall Meeting! This always-epic community event will be held at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, from noon to 3 PM. If you’ve always wanted to participate in creating Burning Man, but just haven’t figured out how, there is always a way for you to help out & participate. On hand will be representatives from all the Burning Man volunteer teams, just waiting to meet new recruits.
We’ll fire up the grills and have a BYO BBQ potluck, so bring some food to share. You can pick up the latest edition of the Black Top Gazette, too. The Town Hall Meeting is a great way to connect with the community, meet new people, and find new ways to participate at the event. We hope to see you there!

Meanwhile, it’s a week chock-full of Burning Man news, so we’ll jump right in with both feet. 163 days!!!

DRUMMERS COLLECTIVE WANTS YOU TO BEAT IT
The Drummers Collective exists as a clearinghouse and contact point for drummers who wish to contribute their art to Burning Man by providing music for performances on the playa and at Burning Man events year round.
One example is the Drum Consortium and the goals in 2004 are:
– Distill an Ensemble of ~ 200 players for a powerful drum rhythm that will accompany the Fire Conclave as they dance, before the Man is released in Pyrotechnic delight, Saturday night at Burning Man 2004.
– Have as many people involved and familiar with the music as possible before the playa.
– Have as much fun in the process and transform this into a year-round Drum Ensemble.
– Always wanted to learn to drum… now is your chance!
Please check out the web site for more information on how to participate and get involved:

SAVE OUR SCREENS
Contributions sought for Burning Man screensaver
New York City regional coordinators Cory and Leslie Bocskor are putting a call out to burners everywhere for contributions for a Burning Man broadcast screensaver. The screensaver, which you can download here: houseofindulgence.com/mode/index.htm already has more than 300 slides of everything from recipes and theme camps to playa art and tips and trix – and it updates with new content almost daily.
If you’d like to get some visibility for your theme camp, art, Burning Man gathering or just have a great photo or two to share, check out the website! It has all the information on the screensaver, and on how to prepare a slide to be broadcast out to burners around the world.

CHINATOWN RISING
Black Rock City is a world-class city, no doubt about it. It’s got public art of a density that surpasses any world capital, and an increasingly international populace. However, one of the cultural markers of any truly international city – from San Francisco to Budapest to Bangkok – remains missing. We need a Chinatown!
Creating this would be a boon for Black Rock City, and would create another level of community for Burners with a Chinese background or interest in anything Chinese.
Just a few ideas, for starters: Betelnut Beauties. Bad Kung Fu shows. The most elegant teahouse on the playa. Mahjong, go, calligraphy, and Cantonese cursing classes. Lion dances. A tweaked Ranch 99. Bobo tea and delicious dumplings. A bamboo man. You name it…
Write for more details and let me know why you’re interested and what ideas, skills, and resources you might have. I’m in Taiwan, and will try to bring as many folks over as I can, but it will be even more fun with you involved!

RELEASE YOUR HIPS: PATRICK RODDIE AND HIS BOOK
Patrick Roddie, the photog behind a great BM photo gallery at webbery.com, is working on a book based on shots he took at last year’s event. One of his series focused on nothing more than people’s hips, and he’s got a publisher interested in that, BUT he needs to know if he has your hips on file, and if so, if you’d consent to being in a book! (Ed’s note, all of Patrick’s pictures are posed, and taken with the subject’s full knowledge.)
He is, as he says, “in in a mad rush to get as many model releases as possible before my first deadline (this Friday, March 26th). Final final deadline is April 10th. I’ve more than enough released hips already, but the more I corral, the better the final selection will be. To that end, I’ve posted an appeal on my website and newsletter for hip subjects at webbery.com/releases.html. In return for a release, I’ll send them an 8×10 print of their hip to keep – and the chance of being in this book. Neither their faces or names would appear in the book, but the publisher needs releases to be on the safe side.”

WESTERN REGIONAL BURN TOUR!
JRS Note: Over the past few months, the Burning Man Regional Contacts have been sharing notes about their local multi-day campout type events… Gary Taylor in Arizona came forward with an idea for a “Regional Burn Grand Tour” that showed how one could reasonably start attending burns in April and coast all the way through to the burn in the desert! While some of the events shown here are not official “regional burns” (a regional event will always include the regional’s Burning Man email address in the post) we have enough contact with the organizers of these events that we’re confident in including them in this listing… and isn’t it fun to imagine an entire spring and summer of burns all over the US?
Arizona’s Regional Contact Gary Taylor says:
“Several months ago several of Burning Mans Regional Contacts, “RC’s” realized through an email discussion that it really was possible to attend a great number of regional burns in a row! Yes, my fellow citizens of Black Rock City, it is possible to go on the road and spend months going from one burner event to the next – and then hit Burning Man to wrap it all up.
Introducing the Western Burn Tour! Travel the Western United States and even participate at regional Burns in Canada. We show you how from one Burner event to the next and immerse yourself in he growing culture that is expanding out from Burning Man and Black Rock Desert!
So hop in the car and let’s be off…”
