Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 8, Issue 33
July 31, 2004
Holy moley! The Man burnin’ in 34 days means this rabbit leaves in 20 and the original Rabbit is already headed for the desert and we’ll be face to face with all the other rabbits? AND even better, with all of you – in less time than it takes the moon to cycle. Whoaa.
But we’re ready! It’s that time, and while many of us in the office run around frantically proclaiming that there aren’t enough hours in the day, it’s a simple thing to stop and remember that no matter what little things we think we’ve forgotten, one thing’s for sure: soon, there’s gonna be a really tall wooden stick-man in the Black Rock Desert. And on September 4, it’s going to be on fire. Ain’t life grand?
Don’t skim this week’s news – from the Map to the Gate, from Leave No Trace to why it’s SO important to keep your rental truck clean, the “NEWS” is required reading in this week’s JRS. Furthermore, it’s far from “too late” to get involved with a fun playa project or team; more than a dozen opportunities await you in “PARTICIPATE”, including the Miss Black Rock City pageant (get those aTest-drive-your-playa-platforms season is also in high gear, with art and theme camp fundraisers, stitch-and-bitches (these are so fun), three *sneak peeks* at the “Beyond Black Rock” doc for you Texans, and just plain get-togethers all over the place.
(This JRS struggled to leave our inboxes on Friday but is arriving on Saturday afternoon instead – read fast for last-minute plans tonight, especially if you’re in Denver!)

2004 BLACK ROCK CITY MAP ONLINE
You’ve been asking for it, and now it’s yours — the 2004 Black Rock City Map! After August 1st, surf on to burningman.com…04_maps, and bask in the glory of this year’s city plan and street names (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, etc…) so you can tell your friends where you’re going to be, and finally print up those party invites! Remember, the inner streets (the shaded ones, easier to see in the downloadable PDF) are reserved for pre-registered theme camps… unless you’re one of them, you won’t be able to camp there. And the edges along 2:00 and 10:00 are reserved for large scale sound camps… unless you’re one of them, you might not *want* to camp there. Enjoy!

THE GATE AWAITS
As you drive through Gerlach the anticipation fills the car. Coming over the rolling hills the magical city appears out of nowhere. All the preparations, the hours toiling on this years’ costume/art project, it all seems worth it now. Heart-pounding grins fill the car and someone puts on THE song and it’s back to the playa.
We all know the feeling, that first taste of the dust, bringing everything back.Remember, before you’re actually in the event there are still a few portions of reality to deal with.
First, please follow all posted speed limits. We are visitors in this area.
Second, all rabbits (Ed note:- *except* the ones who write this newsletter!) in the Black Rock Desert are there on suicide missions. Don’t go against their wishes. If you swerve they will be unhappy and you’ll be in a ditch or worse.
Nine miles after leaving Gerlach, you come to the turnoff. Please slow down before turning onto this gravel road. This is thick, rough gravel and not good for high speeds or sharp turns. Please slow down to about 10 MPH.
Here comes the playa! Slow down to 5 MPH and *stay there* for your entire stay on the playa: speed=danger and dust. Just ahead of you is the gate. We are there waiting for YOU. Welcome home! We’ve been waiting for you.
If you need to purchase tickets please turn right into the parking area. There you can head to the box office (24 hours a day from midnight Sunday August 30 until Midnight Thursday September 4) and purchase your tickets.
All Will Call tickets are held in the same box office. Please turn into the parking lot on your right hand side BEFORE reaching the kiosks. The turn-off is well marked. Park you car, remember to bring your ID and confirmation number. There are port-a-potties there for your convenience after the long journey.
If you do not have a genuine Burning Man ticket in your hand, it’s the parking lot for you. Please. Every car behind you appreciates your sorting out tickets BEFORE getting in the line.
After pulling out of the parking lot, or if you have tickets in hand when you arrive, pull up to the next available kiosk (Cars to the left, large vehicles to the right please). There you will find one of our teams waiting to welcome you home. We will embrace your arrival/return with joy.
Sadly there are those that wish to take money from all of us. As Burning Man is a privately funded event, without corporate sponsorship, we rely on our tickets, and only tickets, to produce this event. Each time someone sneaks through unpaid, we all lose out. Your ticket goes directly to the event and nowhere else, so when people don’t pay, they are taking from your experience.
All vehicles will be inspected for unpaid participants and event-endangering items (firearms, dogs, fireworks). Our staff will inform you before entering your vehicle. If you wish to assist or guide them through the process (showing off your projects) they would be more than happy.
Larger vehicles (moving trucks, RV’s, busses) should stay in the far right hand lanes. We have teams that speedily and efficiently check your vehicles for unpaid participants. We may climb on the roof and look in external storage bays (most RV’s have them). It would speed the process greatly if you had those unlocked before we greet you. Likewise the entry doors on RV’s, the back doors on moving trucks, and emergency exits on buses (if possible).
Please have all tickets in hand when approached by our lovely Gate staff. You will be informed of many fascinating things. When the process is done, we will rip your tickets, leaving you with the souvenir stub and waved onto the Greeters.
With everyone’s cooperation this process should take less than one minute of your time. It will be painless and courteous. After you pass the gate you are officially inside the event, outside of the world and under the vaults of heaven.
The bad side? If someone is found without a ticket in a vehicle, that VEHICLE AND ALL INSIDE IT are barred from entry. We take this very seriously. Everyone in the vehicle is an accomplice. That person must purchase a ticket immediately. Stealing from the event is stealing from everyone. If unable to purchase a ticket, that person, AND THE VEHICLE they came with are asked to leave the event.
We hope you have a good journey here, and we’ll be here waiting for you!!!
Love and whipped cream-
-The Gate staff

DON’T PLOT AGAINST THE MAN
A word about space and land-grabbing from the Theme Camp placement team:
There are more and more theme camps who pre-registered each year, and there are also more and more un-registered camps each year – all of whom want and need space for their camps. It is important for everyone out there to know that land-grabbing will not be tolerated before the start of Burning Man. In previous years, much of the city has been “claimed” long before the event began. Participants are not permitted to slip in early, mark off real estate for camp mates, and slip out again.
The gate will be up early, and our systems will be tighter. Any land found marked off prior to the official opening of the event will be liberated. This is to make it fair for everyone. We all must take our chances at getting the location we prefer, work cooperatively with the neighbors to make everyone happy, and use the resources at Playa Info in Center Camp to let friends and family know exactly where you end up.
Thanks – see y’all on the playa!

LEAVE NO TRACE – PLANNING TIPS PART 1
It takes thousands of people to create a disappearing city, and the how-to lore keeps growing. The Earth Guardians collect good ideas from camps and citizens, mix in Leave No Trace principles, and pass them along. Heed them. Not only will you reduce the Matter Out Of Place (“MOOP”), you’ll make your camp life easier and more pleasant. Email any other good tips you have to us at earthguardians and we’ll include them in later installments!
**Bring the Right Stuff, Leave The Rest Behind:
Figure that everything you bring, you have to take home. Shop smart and pack even smarter to eliminate what you don’t need. You’ll need that extra space when you come home; camping gear tends to expand when covered in playa dust. Plan Ahead with a LNT plan, like earthguardians.burningman.com/clean.html.
Here’s food wisdom from a decade on the playa: tinyurl.com/6d7qs
Plan simple, easy-cooking, low-dishwashing meals. Bring two-thirds the food you think you’ll need. Prepare and freeze meals in ziploc bags. Experience says you won’t feel like doing much cooking. Go heavy on finger foods (go wraps, sandwiches!) that don’t need individual plates.
Forget that messy watermelon. Bring sturdy, reusable cups, mugs, utensils, bowls or plates, not Styrofoam or paper that will blow all over the playa. Ask visitors to your camp to BYOM (bring your own mug). You’ll be able to take your mugs to the Center Camp CafÈ this year. A carabiner or shower hook easily secures it for transport around the City. Many fashionable bars also appreciate BYOMers!
Repackage and prepare food in advance. Stock up on a few half-gallon food storage containers and leave the cellophane, plastic wrap, cardboard and other packaging at home! If you bring dozens of small plastic bottles, plan to take every one of them home with you! Better- bring water in big reusable plastic containers plus a few small bottles as personal canteens. Minimize use of glass bottles; those you do bring, keep ’em in camp. For walk-around drinks, use a mug, hydration pack, canteen or plastic bottle. Or a can. There are many good beers in cans! Check out tinyurl.com/66klr to find some. Remember that every little shard of accidentally broken glass must be picked up by hand, by you.
Plan to separate and sort kitchen trash. Bring a recycling container and use sturdy signs to clearly label trash separation and recycling bins. Bring tethers, anchors, containers, and covers, to keep light stuff from blowing away. Make a multi-bin trash holder from buckets (with lids) and PVC pipe or wood. You’ll want separate containers for recyclables, burnables (paper and wood), and nonburnable trash. For food waste use a mesh bag, like an onion bag. The stuff will dry up, becoming light and nearly odorless, a breeze to pack out.
Take aluminum cans to Recycle Camp. Burn only paper and wood in a community burn platform. Seal the small amount of trash you have left in big plastic bags, or in five-gallon buckets with lids, to take home, or… tinyurl.com/4lzkh. In group camps, let everyone know that they’ll all be taking a bag home.
-REDUCE, REUSE and RECYLE!

PLAYA ART – THE IMMACULATE ILLUMINATION
It has been said that ‘art is hard’. And this is particularly true when one crashes a bicycle into it.
If you’re creating art for the playa in 2004, it’s your responsibility to light your installation so it can be seen at night by drivers, bikers and pedestrians who might otherwise smack right into it at speed. Nobody wants to see people get hurt (unless it’s at the Temple of Atonement, but that’s another story).
Blinky lights, LED’s, light sticks, glow sticks, flood lights … whatever you choose to use, it should be visible on all sides of your installation, and ideally should be secured in such a way that it cannot be nefariously removed (people on the playa seem to have a strange affinity for all things blinky – go figure). And if you come up with a novel solution, please let us know! We’d love to hear about it so we can share it with other artists.

BRC LOCKOUT TEAM SAYS HELLO
Hi all you happy campers!!
It’s that time again, and we at the lock out team just want to say HI.
Just a few things that you should remember: we are a camp just like you, and we are hoping you will stop by our website at brclot.com and catch up on the key care tips. Last year, we helped over 130 people reunite with their car keys, and then there were another 15 to 20 who needed the services of a professional locksmith on the playa. The website has yet to be updated to reflect the current number of people that we have helped, but the numbers are growing each year. So just stop on by and sign our guest book if you feel like it.
See you on the playa.

WHY TO RETURN TRUCKS CLEAN
Possible rumor, but the story is true enough in style. A great way to help the community is to return your rental vehicles and equipment shockingly spotless.
Hello,
I am hoping the Penske folks are contacting you guys directly so the details of their ban don’t get misstated, but here’s what my longtime driver and I were told in a phone call this morning from our local Penske franchisee:
****
Direct from the president of the company, no Penske trucks are to be rented to anyone going to Burning Man. Too many trucks have been returned painted, damaged and otherwise irresponsibly handled, and the company will not take the chance any longer. No trucks anywhere in the country can be rented to Burning Man participants.
In addition, Penske will be sending representatives to the event, and if any Penske trucks are found, they will be taking them immediately off the playa. So don’t think about lying about when you make a reservation, in other words.
****
THE lessons from this, though, at least for me, are that good relations with purveyors pays off and supporting local businesses is paramount. The local franchisee who called us with this information also said he knew of another local company that owns their own fleet of trucks, and given our good history with him, he will try to hook us up. Buy local, build relationships, be responsible. This turn of events couldn’t any more clearly illustrate the importance of those three planks of community-building.
Thanks,
Peace and Joy,
Sioen Roux, the Stoned Buddha

BECOME A BURNING MAN INTERACTIVE ART GUIDE!!
In 2002, when Jeremy Lutes’ lovely Lily Pond installation was vandalized, our community was very upset. Many of you responded by expressing your interest in helping to protect our art – and here’s your chance! We are looking for art lovers, performers and concerned BRC citizens who would like to interact with visitors to Jadu Beta, a huge inflatable sculpture that will be sited in the deep playa. It is made of 500 interconnected inflated pods made from plastic sheeting – not your usual hardy metal sculpture. It’s like an animal or living organism that needs protection.
As interactive guides, you’ll engage visitors playfully, educating them as to Jadu Beta’s nature and encouraging them to interact gently with the creature. Stilters, dancers, hula hoopers, jugglers, masked actors: any and all performers are especially welcome ( but that’s not a requirement!) And did I mention the cool white monogrammed Tyvek jumpsuits you’ll have the option to wear? We warmly welcome your collaboration in helping the artists to bring this installation to its maximum potential.
Please see zevie.com…email-recruitment.html for details on getting involved.
Many thanks – LadyBee, Art Curator
AND
Calling more Guardian Angels!
The Temple of Stars is looking for a few more Guardians who are willing to spend their night of burn in quiet contemplation at the Temple. This is perfect for veteran burners who’re looking for a new way to experience the burning of the Man. Many who’ve done it before describe it as a spiritual high to keep watch at the temple on its final night as the man burns in the distance. To learn more about the Temple Guardians, or to receive an invite to join our exclusive yahoo club where you can sign up for a shift of guardianship, email Termeh at: w_izdum_b
In case you don’t know much about the Temple of Stars and its guardians, David Best is returning with yet another masterpiece and it’s going to be much grander in scale and design than any of his previous temples. As a Temple Guardian you’ll be entrusted with safety of the temple denizens, and the temple structure, for a mere 3 hours. Bring along your friends, better yet, sign them up as Guardians too, and make it an unforgettable night of interaction and participation with a living, breathing, art work like no other.

HELP FOLD TIME
Folding Time is looking for volunteers.
Folding Time, the 5 year, 5 camera, multi-week timelapse system that captures the rise and fall of Black Rock City is looking for a few volunteers join the Folding Time crew in capturing some of the magical sights and sounds that is Burning Man. (folding-time.com)
We are upgrading the system this year in order to capture images for planetarium full dome projection and group interaction. The full dome version of Folding Time will be premiering at the Chabot Space & Science Center in late 2005. (chabotspace.org)
We are looking for participants to help in the following:
Off Playa: Prebuild – (1 participant) Looking for a semi-technically stilled person to help assemble the main wiring harness, install new microphones and prep the camera pod. Novice soldering skills a plus. Est. time is 10-15 hours total.
Procurement ñ (1 participant) Looking for SF Bay burner to help run around town and pick up crucial project items and order stuff on line.
Skills are online surfing and car driving. Est. time is 10-15 hours.
On Playa: Maintenance ñ (5 participants) Need willing participants to climb the Folding Time tower after a rainstorm to clean the camera pod windows. Takes 5 minutes. Simple stuff really.
Art Stuff – The 35 ft. Folding Time tower seems so boring without some really great art on it. Let us know how you would, and/or the perimeter fence around it, with some great art. We can supply an extra bank of batteries for those who might want to do a blinky light or EL wire installation. (The tower is located on the right hand side of the
Promenade about 4/5s the way to The Man.)
On/Off Playa: Volunteer Coordinator — (1 participant) What to be at the hub of the action? We would love to find a Burner who is dependable with good organizational skills to help coordinate the Folding Time volunteers.
Besides being part of an art project, Folding Time volunteers will receive their own Folding Time DVD, honor and recognition at the FT Sake Ceremony, and a constant supply of ultra premium chocolate while working on the project.
Contact Timothy ‘SkySquid’ Childs at skysquid for more info.
When responding, please provide a bit of relative background about yourself.
Dusty hugs to all,

Please send hinges to: Kai G., 2118 Wilshire Blvd 975, Santa Monica, CA 90403. CALL FOR STORYTELLERS
In other times, many decisions ago, beings knew a fresh world. Forms of things were less familiar, more surprising, prone to shift or fade or flowóin need of investigation. Certainty laid no claim to durability but always kept its options open. Dreamtime is coming to Black Rock City to retell those original stories — and maybe to invent a whole new set of tales. We’re putting out a call for storytellers and other spoken-word artists to come join in, both for workshops each afternoon, and for an open-stage performance on Friday 1-4 pm. At 2 pm on the Friday before the burn we will put on a Playa Sailing Parade for the lovely citizens of BRC. We had a successful parade in 2002 with about a dozen vehicles, and although the wind did not cooperate for last year’s parade, this year’s promises to be magnificent.
WHAT: Playa Sailing Parade
WHEN: Friday Sept. 3rd. @ 2pm (or when the wind picks up)
WHERE: We will rally up half way between Center camp and the Man. Look for the sails.
WHO: Anyone who likes to have fun that has a wind-powered craft that complies with BRC-DMV specifications.
Awards will be given for the most interesting/original/creative designs. After the awards we will sail in a parade formation in the open space towards the Man.
BTW, don’t show up with a vehicle that does not comply with BRC-DMV specifications or the rangers will have to impound it.
See the Official BRC-DMV link below for 2004 rules & specifications:

Here is some Info. I wrote to help people understand the rules:

SAIL SMART & SAIL SAFE!! Any stupid stuff could jeopardize the future of playasurfing. Please be careful and considerate to people, vehicles, and art installations.
I am with LiteBrite camp, so look me up if you want to sail the playa.
Cheers,
Dave-O
