There’s quite a bit of news in this weeks JRS: Burning Man’s granted art projects announced… an Ocean Beach cleanup with Burners Without Borders…projects and happenings and regionals and yes, a little about just what the heck happened to Burningman.com on Sunday.
We’re excited to share it and eager to proceed, especially after the festive atmosphere and downright fantastic hats (all totally playa-fabulous, as you’d expect) at last nights Black Rock Arts Foundation (http://www.blackrockarts.org) fundraiser. (Thanks to everyone who attended!)
Yep, we’re in the mood, and so here is your dose of Friday playa-dreams from your friends at BMHQ. Enjoy a fabulous weekend…but Monday, we’ll ask to borrow you for a more serious but unquestionably important JRS. We need your help with public comment to the BLM about some proposed changes to Burning Man’s permit stipulations that could affect us all (in ways that we’d like to avoid) if enacted. We’ve always appreciated that we can count on our readers to act at times like this, so please keep your eyes on your inbox on Monday for that very important JRS.
Meanwhile, let’s make hay while the sun shines – 127 days. GOSH!

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS: OCEAN BEACH CLEANUP 5/5/06
The camp is packed and the volunteers have gone home, but the story of Burners Without Borders is just beginning…and it’s headed to San Francisco. Not content to fade into memory as one of the most creative disaster relief organizations ever to will itself into existence, Burners Without Borders barely stops to catch its collective breath before it undertakes its next civic service adventure: a community cleanup project at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach.
Faced with the potential ban on beach bonfires at Ocean Beach, right now seems a perfect moment to declare an intention to be a part of a solution, and to show the “other” playa a little love. Be a Burner Without Borders on Friday, May 5th, 4pm till past dark at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach for a LNT-style beach clean up and public education project on the proposed ban on beach burns in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Meet at north end of parking lot opposite where Fulton meets the ocean. Together, we’ll make the beach beautiful (bring your cleanup tools if you have them – trash bags, buckets, magnet rakes, etc.), collect letters opposing the beach burn ban, and then enjoy a sunset potluck dinner (don’t forget to bring a little something to share–rumor is Chef Spoon may make New Orleans-style beignets on the spot ). Then, naturally, we’ll make a little fire when the sun goes down–some nail free wood would also be welcome. We’ll post more details, but mark your calendars now, and start looking for a good pointy stick for marshmallows…

HEY, WHAT HAPPENED TO BURNINGMAN.COM???
Burningman.com visitors and e-playa users were unable to access our website from approximately 2 am April 23rd through 1 pm on April 25th. The domain was inaccessible due to an unexpected entanglement with our domain registration. Everything is fine now, and even though we really appreciate the offers of help from our community, this was a really unusual situation and there is nothing more that can be done. Any emails sent to a alias at burningman.com most likely bounced back during this time period and will need to be sent again. We apologize for any inconvenience. Welcome back and we missed you too!

NOW THAT IT’S UP…CHECK OUT THE ART!
FEAST your eyes on the art of Hope and Fear: The Future! Visit http://www.burningman.com/installations/06_art_grant.html to see the descriptions of the art projects that Burning Man is funding this year.
You’ll find images and descriptions and contact info for the artists if you want to get involved…or, if you prefer to be surprised on the playa, DON’T check out the page…just know that stuff looks especially cool this year. 😉

BUT…WHAT ABOUT MY ART THAT DIDN’T GET FUNDED?
As you see, we got a lot of great submissions for art grants…and a lot we weren’t able to fund. It’s in the face of that kind of challenge that we ask the community to turn to itself for support in making art happen. One such artist is Harlan Emil, whose Diamond Portal you might recognize somewhere in your Burning Man memories…below he invites participation in the Emerald Portal with a project plan and description for readers to consider.
If you are also finding yourself seeking support for your art idea – fundraising events, finances, advice on how to use a drill press, or more hands to cut and lift – please consider all your resources. May we suggest:
1) Turn to your friends and compatriots – there’s nothing like a group project to bring people together; 2) attend a regional meeting, gathering or post to your regional list, and get people interested in what you’re doing (we stood and watched this happen at an early South Bay gathering at the home of the former regional there – artists stood on a chair in the living room and announced their projects to the groups and stated what kind of help they needed….and it WORKED, we might add, to great effect!) ; 3) if you’re still not getting what you’re hoping for, you might try sending a post to the JRS with specifics like a URL and contact info. Keep in mind that the best place to turn is your own backyard. It’s not necessarily easy for lots of far-flung projects to be supported from all over the map….but one thing is clear: magic happens when you bring groups of people together to create art. Right?
Here’s Harlan’s call for help….HELP CREATE THE EMERALD PORTAL:
Be a part of a Burning Man art project: Help fund the Emerald Portal for Burning Man 2006 If you experienced the 11:11 Diamond Portal at Burning Man 2004 -’05 and want to help make this new project possible, or if you are interested in facilitating an experience incorporating sacred geometry, heart chakra energetics and nonlinear dynamic sound vibrations to activate the vibrational shift, please help fund this project! CALL FOR DESIGNS FOR BURNING MAN STICKERS – DEADLINE MAY 5TH
Thanks to the above referenced borkened-ness, if you sent a Burning Man sticker design between April 22 – April 25 it was not received. Bummer! Please re-send to Bex or email her if you have any questions about your design.
Once again, this is the official call for designs for the 2006 Burning Man stickers that are passed out with the materials you receive at the Greeters station in Black Rock City, and other designs that appear randomly in your hands at other points in time:
These stickers are two color and can vary in size from 2.25″ by 5.5″ to 3″ by 3″ or 3″ in diameter for a round design. Please incorporate the name Burning Man and the year 2006 into your design. These are two color stickers only so please design accordingly. If at all possible, please post your design on a web page and send the URL to Bex; otherwise send in an Adobe Illustrator file to bex-at-burningman-dot-com. Whether sending your design or questions, please put “STICKER DESIGN” in the subject header. HEY, remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme! Hope and Fear: The Future!
We are also looking for designs for the 2006 car stickers. This sticker is a car window sticker that will be printed on clear vinyl and in two colors. Please make sure designs contain the Burning Man name and the year 2006. Designs should be 2″ by 2″ or 2″ diameter if round. If at all possible, please post your design on a web page and send the URL to Bex; otherwise send in an Adobe Illustrator file to bex-at-burningman-dot-com. Please put “STICKER DESIGN” in the subject header. Ditto here on the theme!

SAN FRANCISCO BURNING MAN ANNOUNCE
While we’re totally aware (and MORE than glad, mind you!) that San Francisco is far from the only city that goes to Burning Man, we do know that LOTS of burners hail from here…and after a little edge-of-the-envelope calculation today we have realized that many of you are still not signed up for San Francisco Burning Man Announce List.
The JRS respects and adores ALL its far-flung readers, and therefore we don’t post *every* Bay Area event that we hear about because so many of our 40,000 plus subscribers just don’t need the information.
Now, there’ll always be a space in the JRS for SOME events in the city by the Bay, but the San Francisco Burning Man Announce List has even more information and events specific to San Fran-disco…so, why aren’t you on the SF Announce List, O burner-in-the-city-that-begat-Burning-Man?

REMINDER: REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST
Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away. We would like to carry on this tradition and honor those who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address: remembrance(at)burningman(dot)com (please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS!!)
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 28th) through Friday (September 1st).
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

PROJECT MEGAPIXELS: PICTURE SELECTED – JOIN THE FUN ON THE PLAYA!!
Project Megapixels seeks to create a very large image on the desert floor, visible in satellite photos (remember this one? http://platial.com/place/37100 , using squares of fabric as “pixels”.
Sputnik updates us on the progress: “We recently announced the picture we are hoping to make. To see it click on the following link:
http://pics.livejournal.com/sputnik/pic/0002hddk
This project still needs you to bring out pieces of this enormous puzzle. Right now we have about 1000 pieces spoken for, but we need 5000 to make the complete picture. Each piece is simply a square of fabric a bit over 3 feet by 3 feet. If you can bring 5 to 10 pieces, then we can do this with 500 people or so. The project also needs donations of items we’ll need to build and layout the image, things like lights for the perimeter, a generator, electrical cords, rebar stakes, 30,000 feet of rope, etc.
To get involved, check out our web site at http://projectmegapixels.org or email Sputnik at dan.eklund at gmail.com
In other good news, we have confirmation that the satellite picture of BRC will be taken again this year. Probably late in the week, exact day not known yet.
Thanks and see you on the playa!”

====================REGIONALS CORNER========================
{============================================================}
REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT: HOUSTON, TEXAS
This week…we’re frankly a little jealous because we hear it’ll be a lovely 82F today in Houston, Texas. Regional Juan fills us in on the latest.
“This time of year, the Houston region is all intertwined with the Austin and Dallas regions getting ready for Flipside! The theme this year is Fall From Grace. Specifically in Houston, the art car peeps are creating our effigy, The Chalice of Dissention. It’ll be a large wine glass covered with steel coin punch-out with interior lighting sequenced to music. OH, and lots of flamethrowers.
Other Houstonians (The Damn Fucking Texans) are creating the Amityville Whorehouse theme camp with the zombie bar, several curiosity rooms, and an electric chair and Throne of Judgement. We plan to bring this basic concept to the playa in August for some more fear…..and hope too? We’ll see y’all there, unless you’re here next month!
Houston burners are a scattered bunch, much like the city we call home, spread over hundreds of square miles of the freewayed swamp that is our city…we encourage any and all lone Houstonites to rally to the cause, and drop us a line! We know you’re out there, at the Art Car Parade, in the suburbs, behind that desk. Come out and play!”
