JRS VOLUME #10; ISSUE #27

Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 10, Issue #27

It’s Friday afternoon, and we have been trying to send this JRS to you since last week, but there’s always ONE MORE THING we have to tell you, and ONE LITTLE CHANGE that just can’t wait, and ONE BIG EMERGENCY we have to deal with to get ready for the burn…so giving birth to these babies takes a long long time sometimes…but here it is! Thanks to everyone for your patience, contributions, and readership. A REMINDER! If you want something in the JRS, send it early, since it can take up to 2-3 weeks actually to send out an issue, and…if you don’t put “POST REQUEST” in the subject line, especially at this time of year…we can’t really help it if we don’t see you in all the spam.

There’s just too much info this week for us to even try to be pithy about the (ummm, WHAT?) 43 DAYS until the Man burns, so we’re just gonna give you the news and git on up outta here, heading out into the San Ferdisco summer to make good use of one of the last weekends of the year before we leave for the desert…and how are your plans comin’?

Next week: special issues galore…health and safety, the environment, and bikes bikes bikes!

“MY LATE PHOTO GALLERIES”…WITH AERIAL SHOTS BY BRAD TEMPLETON

Brad Templeton surfaces with his ’05 pics! “I’ve been behind on putting photo galleries together, but I did put up my Burning Man 2005 galleries this weekend. http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm05/

Of particular interest to many burners will be an aerial survey I did of Black Rock City, attempting to take close-up photos of just about every block in the city. Scroll down to the bottom of the above page to see 4 pages with over 200 detailed BRC photos from above. Your tent and perhaps you are in there. As I have not yet identified the location of all the photos, if you can help with a missing or incorrect picture label, or want to name the theme camps in a photo, follow the instructions at the bottom of the aerial pages for how to mail me updates.

http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm05/6-10-pass1/

http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm05/6-10-pass2/

http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm05/2-6-pass2/

The panoramas? Yes, they are mostly assembled but I haven’t put up the page yet. Another note will come when they’re ready.”

Thanks for sharing ’em, Brad!

RENO TO PLAYA RIDESHARE PROJECT

The Reno to Playa ride share rendezvous location is being hosted by Twin City Surplus at 1675 East 4th Street in Reno again this year. There will be a portable toilet, shade, some trash bins and all the stuff Twin City offers including water and camping / playa supplies, but no close by grocery shopping. If you need to grocery shop then do so first, then make your way to Twin City. You can repackage for the playa there and use the trash bins to discard store packaging.

To get to Twin City Surplus, 1675 East 4th Street: From I80 take the Wells Avenue Exit and go south one block to 6th Street. Turn east on 6th and go about 6 blocks to where it joins 4th Street. Look left and see large water tanks belonging to Twin. Turn in there. That is the rendezvous parking location.

http://local.google.com/local?f=q&hl=en&q=1675+E+4th+ST,+Reno,+NV&ie=UTF8&om=1

Please do not park in front of the store entrance as you will interfere with normal store traffic. Please don’t ask Twin employees about the ride share project or rider/driver status. They don’t know anything about that; they just provide the location.

If you’re unfamiliar with the ride share project: It is an effort by the Reno Burning Man Community to help Burners who arrive in Reno without ground transportation get to the playa, and to give those who are driving to the playa a chance to give a ride and meet interesting people. If you’re driving please consider stopping by to give somebody a ride.

Send any questions to: reno-at-burningman-dot-com

SCRAP EDEN: A PROJECT OF THE BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION FOR 2006

This year the Black Rock Arts Foundation is creating a collaborative garden installation populated by garden-inspired sculptural elements created from re-claimed, re-purposed and re-cycled materials, and all citizens of BRC are invited to participate! Yes! You are an artist!

The idea formed this year in San Francisco when the Foundation began looking at what it could do, using interactive art as the medium, to promote a culture of re-use and re-cycling. And while this installation will take place at Burning Man 2006 we hope it will serve as a pilot project for sprouting gardens first in BRC, then SF, and eventually, nationwide. Our hope is that this prototype garden at Burning Man 2006 will not only demonstrate to the citizens of BRC the kinds of projects we support in the default world, and prove a beautiful interactive collaborative art installation at this year’s event!

Help make it happen!

This year, the Black Rock Arts Foundation is inviting Burning Man citizens to create sculptures of garden-inspired flora and fauna from re-claimed, re-cycled and re-purposed INORGANIC materials for a collective installation on the open playa. We’ll provide a centrally located garden shed (built from re-claimed materials) as a focal point around which participants will be able to “plant”, or install, individual (or communal) creations for collective exhibition.

We’ll be holding two day long production potluck/workshops at the BRAF/Burning Man Offices: Sunday, August 6th and Sunday, August 13th from 12:00 noon – 6pm, to create several small artworks for the playa incarnation of ScrapEden. For more information or to RSVP please write to: scrapedenbrc-at-blackrockarts-.-org

Additionally, we’ll be posting instructions for tin can flowers and other reclaimed projects on our website in the days to come: http://www.blackrockarts.org

If you would like to create a sculpture for exhibition, or help us staff the ScrapEden installation, contact us at: scrapedenbrc-at-blackrockarts-.-org

BURNER ARTISTS: SEE YOUR WORK UNDER THE MAN

PARTICIPATE in this multimedia piece going in the maze under the Man this year:

WE NEED YOUR ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTIONS! AND WE NEED ‘EM BY JULY31st!

So, we’re looking for black & white drawing images or designs that convey either a sense of hope or fear (or the future) -or bits of all three. What scares you? What gives you hope? What will the future bring? We think the theme invites a pretty free range of ideas and images. Have fun! Now, these can be original drawings (which will always give a piece like this more “juice”), but good quality copies or 300dpi scans will look great too after we collage them in and do a little transparent painting over them. (Hey, copy a bunch of pages from that crazy sketch-book you keep!)

GUIDELINES
We will be collaging the drawing images on to the wood panels we’ll be using for this mural-sized project-and then painting over them with transparent acrylic.

Size: we’re thinking that for the most part, drawings should fit onto an 8.5×11 sheet of paper – so they can be as small as you want – but generally, 8.5 x 11 should be the largest (there will actually probably be several images as large as 11 x 17-but we’ll take care of those, unless you really want to…).

Paper should be white or slightly off-white and should be relatively lightweight (so we can cut it out easily) but not *too* lightweight so it won’t buckle when glued down (copier paper is great).

Drawings that are copied should be originally done in dark pencil (4b or softer) or pen & ink. Shading is fine and good, but try not to have too large an area solidly shaded in black. Drawings should be in black and white (no color), and outlines should be fairly clear line-art – not “sketchy”.

Feel free and encouraged to send as many drawings as you’d like. We need them starting NOW and up until July 31st. See more images at http://artfarmmotel.blogspot.com/2006/03/welcome-to-art-farm-motel.html OK-let’s see, getting the drawings to us. If you’re sending us drawings or copies-send to:

Art Farm Motel
211 Donald Street
Graton, California 95444

There’s also a free Bacon t-shirt, a pig (ballpoint) pen and monthly comic strip.

We’re raffling off chances to win this fabulous prize for $10 a pop. We’ll hold a drawing first thing on Monday and announce the winner in the Beacon on Tuesday. If you can’t come by the pick up the voucher, we’ll mail it to you right after the event.

Bacon of the Month club only delivers in the United States, but the voucher is transferable so if you’re outside America you can gift it to somebody else.

HELP KOSTUME KULT FOR BURNING MAN 2006

For many playa years, Kostume Kult has been freely gifting tens of thousands of dollars worth of costumes to all comers every year. We help people participate changing their BM experiences and, for some, their lives.

As a NYC-based camp who travel thousands of miles, our mission ain’t easy and involves getting a massive amount of costumes and infrastructure from here to there. To do so, we work hard year-around on costume soliciations and fundraiser events, and all people camping with Kostume Kult pay playa dues.

This year the big news is that we just bought out a defunct Ft. Lauderdale Costume Warehouse and have one ton of costumes (yes, 2000 lbs.) to give away on-playa. The problem now is, we just spent most of our cash on this grande endeavor and are scurrying about trying to make ends meet.

How can you help? Check out the Kostume Kult website for full info on some of our resource needs. Among them:

– We need to ship a large number of costume boxes from both NYC and Colorado Springs (where two costume companies have donated 20+ boxes) to BRC. We are seeking a burner-friendly shipping company who will give a great price or hope to find someone who is driving a truck or roomy RV from/through either locale.

– We need someone in Reno who can receive and store costume box deliveries for a few days.

– Couches, carpenters, shade structures: Being NYers, every year we expend a ton of time and energy flying into Reno early and driving around looking for this stuff. Looking for anyone out west who can donate and/or deliver such things to save us $ that would go towards shipping.

There are many other resources we need and ways you can help. For more information about the Kostume Kult please visit us at: http://www.kostumekult.com

THE VIKINGS NEED VEGGIE OIL

Radio Free Valhalla, playa-home to the Viking Youth Power Hour (www.vikingyouth.com), will be traveling to Burning Man this year in their newly acquired WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) school bus. If you work at a restaurant or store that has Waste Vegetable Oil, or if you have a hook up to Veggie Oil in some other capacity, the Vikings need your help in obtaining that oil.

We will be travelling from Chicago to Black Rock City (about 2,000 miles one way) via Route 80 through Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah & Nevada and need friendly hook ups and pit stops along the way where we can refill our WVO tank to continue our trip. If you have any leads on Co-ops or restaurants or any place where we can take the WVO off someone’s hands please contact us at vikingyouth-at-thefeedlot-.-org.

By traveling to Black Rock City by WVO we are not only saving ourselves a ton of money, but we’re also helping to minimize the impact our traveling will have on the planet. It’s financially beneficial for us and also for the restaurants whose oil we use as they normally have to pay a fee to have their oil hauled. Traveling by WVO not only makes our trip a living example of the possibilities available for more sustainable, less damaging fuel alternatives, but is also a hell of a lot of fun. Be a part of this experiment and help us find some WVO!!

Stop by Radio Free Valhalla every day at 2:00pm on the playa for live recordings of the Viking Youth Power Hour, voted Chicago’s favorite podcast. Past guests have included Alex Grey, R.U. Sirius, Hunter Thompson biographer Wayne Ewing, Jim DeRogatis and many more. We will also be doing a workshop on WVO conversion check the What, Where, When for time and info on that.

Thanks!

BURNING DOGOODERS HELP HOMELESS YOUTH IN LA – EVENT SUN. JULY 30

As we gather our resources and throw our last-minute fundraiser parties to cover the mounting costs of our theme camps and art cars, Burning Do-Gooders hope many of you can take a break from all your playa preparations and come down to Santa Monica on Sunday, July 30th for a fundraiser of a different sort.

Inspired by the amazing efforts of Burners Without Borders on the Gulf Coast and beyond, a group of Burner friends decided to take their own small step toward doing good locally in the name of the Burner community. So yes, they’re throwing yet another fundraiser party — but not for a theme camp. It’s for an organization doing amazing work right in their home in Los Angeles.

They’re called My Friend’s Place, and for 18 years they’ve been helping homeless youth in Los Angeles get their lives back on track. They do this by offering meals, clothes, a place to hang out, job training, health education services, creative writing classes, and lots more. They even teach juggling and stilt-walking classes. Really.

So mark your calendars for Sunday, July 30th, and come on down to the Mor Bar for an evening of fun, friends, dancing, good vibes and a great cause. All for just 7 bucks — or five if you bring a friend!

Playa attire encouraged but optional.

PORTLAND’S “SOAK” REGIONAL BURN REPORT

Krumpet, the Portland Regional Contact, writes:

“Something happened this weekend. It wasn’t about DJs, fire and art. It was about community.

“Thanks to the Miller family and their beautiful land, most people drove only about an hour to find themselves in a wooded canyon with pockets of meadow and creek, picnic areas, and a swimming hole. From Friday morning to Sunday evening, I saw people helping each other, sharing meals, creating projects, transporting art and burn barrels around, leading the new and learning from the wise. Our vibe was absorbed by the owners and some local residents, who walked or rode the property when we were there. They were very impressed with our respect of the land and each other. I invited them all to come back for the Burn and they did – but more on that later.

“Highlights: The first-timers. All of them. We painted bodies, we recruited them into projects, we signed them up for greeter shifts and then couldn’t make them leave the greeter station. Koren, first-timer, said, ‘Oi! Soak was AMAZING. I’m not sure I can say why . . . I’m still trying to re-re-re-adjust to life outside of the woods. I keep expecting to pass a corner and wander into a camp full of cheerful exciting people. Thank you everybody!’ Ah, makes me think of my first time.

“Evil Dave from Seattle camped next to my friend Todd from Salem who was seriously injured in a car accident. Todd has a lot of memory loss, and Dave discovered that they had lived in the same town (on the same street) for a while some years ago. Dave sat with him and talked about all the places in the neighborhood and helped him refill a part of his brain.

“The owner told me a story about a church group that he won’t let back because they were “too weird”, and then asking me if we wanted to use the location again next year 🙂

“Talking of fire… SOAK took place in a rural community where not much happens and they like it that way. When we first talked to Marion County FD, we asked to do a burn, have some fire art and some fire performers. They had no idea what we were talking about. When we showed up for the fire inspection last Tuesday, the chief, chief’s assistant and marshall approved everything but said they wanted to send a truck down. For free. On Saturday the fire chief took his daily stroll through the property (he lives on the edge of it) and said he was thinking about not sending the truck. We convinced him that it would be a good experience for his men.

With a late burn approval because of the dry weather, we decided to have a community man building on Saturday using natural materials from the property. Ranger dragon brought in materials to build a burn platform and made a small man to let every know it was on. Aaron Trotter brought one of his body sculptures and attached it to the body, symbols were carved and attached, fallen tree branches turned into arms and a beautiful scarecrow of a man appeared.

We had talented fire performers, a fire pendulum, a cozy burn and locals (including the firemen) standing around in amazement. The three youngest firemen went home & came back wearing their gifted SOAK laminates, the local residents helped us move a stuck vehicle and offered to store anything we wanted until next year.

Notable visitors…Diem from Seattle!…Rangers from WA/OR/CA…RWBers from Santa Cruz…local residents….

Did I mention? SOAK 2007 ~ July 20, 21, 22″
