JRS VOLUME #10; ISSUE #29a

Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 10, Issue 29a
August 15, 2006

Where’s the JRS been? From the Department of Disastrous Fortune: Let’s just say that when thieves targetted your Girl of Action for a laptop/purse/everything-and-my-to-do-list theft two weeks ago, they really picked a hell of a Powerbook to steal and one doozy of a time to do it. Ouch.

The upshot, aside from a new laptop and shiny new ID in my wallet, is that the backlog means this week’s JRS is JAM PACKED. Chock-full. Lengthy. Substantial. You know, HUGE. In fact, we broke it in two for easy digestion: this segment is ALL BRC NEWS, yo. Participate and Events/Happenings will show up in the next issue. If you submitted an item and you don’t see it here, it may have been held aside for another JRS cycle, especially if you sent it in the past few days. Thanks for your patience.

Important stuff, this time, so read up and get ready, and stay tuned for round two in a little while. The fence is up, work crews are growing, and the Man burns in 18 days.

MORE ART THAN EVER IN 2006!

The Art Department is all ablaze with anticipation, as 2006 promises to be a banner year for art on the playa, with 240 registered art installations – one third more than last year. The playa is jam packed with ART!!! We’ve got bamboo architecture, flaming blocks of ice, a steam-engine powered insect carousel, a deconstructed cathedral, a mountain of faces, a robotic spider, a field of sunflower robots, a mobile 3-story Victorian house, a homicidal hammock, a rubber chicken- launching trebuchet, a gigantic burning bra, and much much more!!!

View the theme art here: http://www.burningman.com/installations/06_art_theme.html

And the playa art here: http://www.burningman.com/installations/06_art_playa.html

For the funded art, see: http://www.burningman.com/installations/06_art_grant.html

The Man will stand on a grand Pavillion, which contains a series of courtyards and rooms, each featuring an art installation. Watch the website for those listings, coming soon.

We have some very interesting projects from overseas this year, including:

Eight Swiss artists known as eTOY Corporation are bringing us Mission Eternity: http://www.burningman.com/installations/06_art_theme.html#mission . This project was recently on display at the Festival of Art on the Edge at the San Jose Museum of Art.

On the playa, look for the white container just past and to the right of the Temple of Hope.

A mighty crew of 78 Belgians is building an enormous wooden structure in the deep playa, the Message Out of the Future: http://www.burningman.com/installations/06_art_theme.html#message See also: http://www.burningexperience.be Look for this one straight out past the Temple of Hope on the 12:00 meridian. It will burn on Sunday night after the Temple.

Burns and performances to note:

Serpent Mother performance: Friday night, 11 pm, at 4:30 between the Man and the Esplanade, Exothermia: see fire in ice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights at 10, in front of Camp Carp, Fire in the Belly – she burns on Sunday night at 8, on the Man burn pyre, Seattle’s Temple of Light and Cat’s Cradle: burning Sunday night at 8:00, just below the Temple of Hope, The Temple of Hope: Sunday at 9 pm, Message out of the Future: Sunday after the Temple burn, 2BLEVE: Nate Smith stages a powerful flame effect on Friday night just after sundown, behind the Temple of Hope.

Remember the Flower? The Flower returns to the playa with its fearful counterpart, a Venus Fly Trap. This year the two flowers will dance together, with special performances as follows:

Wednesday night at the Temple of Breaks, Thursday night at the ARTery, Friday night, a choreographed show near the Man, Saturday night post burn choreographed show at Red Nose District.

For other performances refer to your What Where When guide; you’ll get one at our gate when you enter Black Rock City.

Fasten your seatbelts!!! Prepare to be dazzled by more art than we’ve ever seen on the playa!!!

GREENING THE BURN– OFFSET THE CLIMATE IMPACT OF THE BURN!

GREENING THE BURN– Taking the climate-changing heat out of the burning of the Man!

Burners Without Borders has collaborated with the brainiacs at CoolingMan (http://www.coolingman.org) to figure out the climate change impact of burning The Man, and how to “offset” that impact, making the burn climate change neutral.

CoolingMan estimates that the burning of The Man will generate approximately 100 tons of greenhouse gases (GHG). To more than neutralize these emissions, CoolingMan is seeking 110 tons of GHG offsets.

Offsets come in variety of ways. You can plant a tree, which is good for one ton, or buy a ton’s worth by investing in renewable energy projects, like wind and solar. Buying a ton is anywhere from $5 to $10, and we’re estimating high so we can make sure we’re able to meet our goal.

Cool it forward by going to http://www.coolingman.com to help us completely offset the impact of the burn before the start of Burning Man 2006–there you can also figure out your theme camp’s impact, and offset that as well. It’s easy, cheap, and makes a huge difference. Be sure to report your participation to CoolingMan so they can track and then report on our progress.

We’re off to a great start! We’ve already received $180 in donations, enough to offset at least 18 tons!

2006 LNT TOUR OF THE CITY

Leave No Trace Tour of the City wants YOU!

Each year we enjoy the fruits of a clean, beautiful, well organized City and come up with better ways to manage our trash and play, eat, and sleep in comfortable camps. We can be proud of the fact that Burning Man is one of the largest Leave No Trace events in the country. We create a temporary City in the desert, then help it disappear.

Now in its fifth year, the Leave No Trace Tour of the City features camp showers, kitchens, trash management, grey water systems, good neighbors, and repurposed structures. Model camps provide working examples for those of us looking for ways to camp smarter at Burning Man.

A number of camps are returning to Burning Man with the same basic structure or materials used in previous years. High traffic camps are finding ways to minimize imported trash by planning ahead. Grey water is being managed with an increasing number of solutions.

Model camps can feature any practice or technology. Theme camps of all sizes and types are encouraged to join and need only be a registered theme camp, subscribe to all seven principles of Leave No Trace, submit their LNT Plan, and be willing to show their camp to interested participants during the Burning Man event. The Tour is self-guided. Model camps are featured on a large informational map in the Earth Guardians Pavilion and are also eligible to win a coveted Camp of the Day award.

The Camp of the Day contest, a separate LNT opportunity open to any registered theme camp, awards 2 tickets to next year’s event. Those camps that best exemplify Leave No Trace will win. Theme camps can enter the contest before or during the event.

Information on LNT at Burning Man can be found at http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/environment_concerns/earth_guard_tips.html.

If your theme camp would like to be part of this year’s LNT Tour of the City, please contact Earth Guardians at lntcamps(at)comcast(dot)net.

YOU AND YOUR DMV MAIL

ALL MUTANT/DISABLED VEHICLE REGISTRANTS, please read. Wehave been seeing a pattern of some people not getting their letters from the DMV about the status of their applications, though we have been sending them regularly. Many of the missing letters seem to be problems with Hotmail accounts, though maybe not all. Though we still have a few to go, we have processed most of the applications and sent most of the letters. If you have not received your letter: 1) Check your spam box and and all your folders. Check them twice. A lot of the letters end up being found with some digging. 2) If you cannot find your letter, send an email to dmv (at) burningman (dot) com and we will either let you know your status or resend the letter.

CURRENT TV AT BURNING MAN

We’re big fans of Current TV, the first-ever national cable and satellite channel dedicated to bringing the viewer’s voice to television through viewer-created content. Launched on August 1, 2005, Current’s approach to the media invites viewers to create the “pods” that tell the news on the network, amd we like that its mission resonates with Burning Man’s own expressed principles of immediacy and self-expression.

Back in December, the JRS told you about their “Welcome to Burning Man” pod filmed at last year’s event, and you can check it out along with “Art of Burning Man”, in rotation on their site right now:

Welcome to Burning Man: http://www.current.tv/pods/culture/PD00933 Art of Burning Man: http://www.current.tv/pods/art/PD03143

Good stuff, right? See, the folks at Current also happen to have been burners before they ever showed up at the event with their cameras, and it’s been evident since we got to know them that their mission at Current is deeply rooted in philosophies they discovered and explored as participants at the event. (They’ve told us as much. We admit, we were impressed.)

With that in mind, Burning Man and Current TV have met several times this summer to talk about their return to the playa in ’06, and not surprisingly, they’ve got some great ideas…and they want to invite you to participate. Ever wished you could write the news of Burning Man that gets shared with the world? What would happen if BRC took over the airwaves, right from the playa, and produced its own story?

Stay tuned to the JRS and http://www.current.tv

TWO PARTICIPANT-CREATED RESOURCES FOR FINDING YOUR FRIENDS

WHERE ARE YOU CAMPING? COORDINATE HERE.

LIMBO writes: “WhereAreYouCamping.com is a simple web site I put up that lets you tell all your friends where you will be camping at Burning Man and what you and your campmates have planned while there. Of course, you can also see where everyone else is camping so you’ll be ready when you hit the playa.

* Register and join a camp (most theme camps are already listed or create a new one). * Tell everyone about your camp and what events you have planned. * Mark your friends as favorites, don’t be shy – those are private. * Print a list of your favorite burners to take with you to the playa for easy stalking. * Tell all your friends about it!”

BURNING MAN APPEALS BLM STIPULATION REQUIRING PAYMENT FOR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPENSES

Recently the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued Black Rock City, LLC (BRC) a five-year Special Recreation Permit. One of the stipulations requires BRC to pay for local law enforcement expenses in addition to the $4 per person per day in user fees that BRC already pays to the BLM. For the past five years, BLM has paid for local law enforcement expenses from the user fee revenue. Legal counsel have advised BRC that this stipulation is “double dipping” that goes against the BLM’s own fee regulations. BRC has filed an appeal of that stipulation, which will be heard by the Department of Interior Board of Land Appeals. Appeals can sometimes take over a year to be decided. In the meantime BRC is paying local law enforcement expenses for 2006. If BRC ultimately prevails then the BLM will have to reimburse the expenses to BRC.

Thank you to everyone who sent public comments to the BLM earlier this year about the proposed new stipulations for 2006. BRC is satisfied with the outcome of the rest of the stipulation negotiations. The permit, stipulations and related documents are available for downloading here: http://www.nv.blm.gov/Winnemucca/NEPA/burningman/burningman.htm

BUILD THIS SHOWER: CAMP NOSEFISH LNT TIP

“Camp Nosefish is known for its commitment to LNT. We’ve developed a shower system which catches all water from the shower, so it can be treated or simply transported to a sanitary sewer outside of Burning Man. It is neither legal nor ethical to dump your untreated gray water onto the playa. That includes showering directly on the playa — illegal and unethical.

You can find a complete write-up on how to build our Nosefish Shower here: http://www.timefold.com/nosefishshower

It includes step-by-step instructions, a complete list of tools and materials, and lots of tips and hints that will help you succeed. This is a project that you can complete in less than one day for less than $100 and uses simple tools like a jigsaw and an electric screwdriver/drill. It breaks down into a few pieces which assemble quickly on the playa with a screwdriver. You re-use it each year.

It works with those simple solar shower bags. Figure you’ll use one 2.5 gallon water jug per shower, and you’ll carry the water home in the same water jug.”

SWAPTHING.COM – ITEMS FOR TRADE AND SWAP

Still trying to get everything ready for the playa? Got a bunch of stuff from last year that you know you’re not going to use this time around? SwapThing (http://www.swapthing.com) is a group of like-minded users who want an alternative, responsible way to get what they need in a trusted community. None of the hassles (or cost!) of the big auction sites, simply find others who are interested in swapping items or services and do it. Currently, items up for trade on SwapThing include:

– Bikes – Tents – Sleeping bags – Lawn chairs – Coats – Water carriers

… and a bunch of other good stuff that may be just the bit that’s needed to complete that art project. Check it out!

BEYOND BLACK ROCK GOES NATIONWIDE, AND GONE OFF DEEP GOES DEEPER FOR BRAF

Those tenacious Texans just keep making us smile… This week marks the nationwide retail DVD release of Beyond Black Rock, a film we’re very proud to have available to help tell our story to the public at large, so please encourage all your Burn-curious friends to check it out. Tower Records and Hollywood Video are among the biggest supporters of this launch.

In celebration of this week, and the overwhelming response from the community to their BRAF pledge program, Gone Off Deep is also extending its offer to making a Black Rock Arts Foundation donation with a (respectable!) portion of proceeds for its online DVD sales of Beyond Black Rock and The Temple Builder, until the Man Burns! You can get both fine films at http://www.goneoffdeep.com/store

Lastly, you can catch Beyond Black Rock on the big screen at the Tahoe/Reno International Film Fest on Friday, August 25th at 9:30pm, at the Resort at Squaw Creek Theater #1 ( http://www.t-riff.org).

CHICAGO OFFERS TEMPORARY STORAGE AFTER THE BURN

The Chicago Burning Man community would like to offer a helping hand to anyartists passing through Chicago after the burn this year by offering temporary (until October 1st, 2006), secure storage space for your large scale installations, your art cars, your tapestries, etc to help make your easing back into the default world a little less of a headache.

“But, I’ve always heard Chicago is full of salty troublemakers, lechers and cretins,” you say. “So what’s the rub?” Well, in exchange for keeping your playa art nice and safe and off your mind for a few weeks we’d like you to come back to Chicago on September 30th and set your projects up at our 1st Annual Block Party Decompression and help make the party something this city will never forget.

It’s not a bad deal at all really, we’ll store your crap safely away until September 30, meanwhile you can put your energy into drinking away the pain of the default world and reminiscing about the dozen ways your life changed during that Thursday morning sunrise. All you have to do in exchange is drag your self back to Chicago on September 30th for a giant outdoor party with a bunch of beautiful people and then take your stuff home with you October 1st. Sweet.

Chicago’s 1st Annual Block Party Decompression will be from noon until 10:00pm on Saturday September 30th. We’ll have 3 sound systems, mini-theme camps, geodesic domes, art cars, fire art, performance art, food, drinks, installations, and what ever YOU bring to the table. This should be an amazing event and a milestone in our communities history, do yourself a favor and be a part of it.

ONE-WAY TRUCK RUN FROM MINNEAPOLIS…

Does anyone need a flatbed truck to make a run from the Minneapolis area or near there to the playa? Good for stuff you plan to store post event or a burning art piece.

Chicken John has an empty truck on the way home from the area. He said he would do a transpo run to Burning Man for any group who wants to split gas to the event. Why drive an empty truck across the country?

BURNING MAN SCREEN SAVERS GALORE!!!

Psyche screen savers are now available for downloading! Visit http://www.bmscreensavers.com/ to get ’em. As usual, they’re free. The folks at iScreensaver have gone over the top to make the screen savers available on their server, and they’ve got bandwidth out the ying and the yang, so there shouldn’t be any download bottlenecks. If you have any problems however, please be patient. Visit the site again in a couple of days. Everything will be fine.

As a bonus, we’ve got archive screen savers – Floating World, Beyond Belief and Vault of Heaven. While they may, or may not, be immediately available, they certainly will be soon after the crunch.

As usual, we must thank all 51 photographers who submitted material for this year’s feat! Without you folks this wouldn’t be possible. It was difficult paring down all the great photos to the 1144 we finally picked! Thanks to each and every one of you!!!!

If you’d like to participate in this year’s screen saver project – Hope and Fear: The Future – send an e-mail to brcbound (at) earthlink (dot) net and we’ll send you a reminder when the time comes to submit material.

TICKET-O-RAMA

Not long now!!

Don’t have a tickets yet?! Better hop to it before you go. Plan ahead and get your ticket TODAY if you know you are attending Burning Man 2006.

Tickets can be purchased online or through Walk In Outlet – for a detailed list of our outlets or to buy tickets go here: http://tickets.burningman.com/

Tickets currently cost $280.

Tickets purchased at the Box Office will cost at least $300 (or $350). Due to our remote location we cannot guarantee credit card sales. Please come prepared to pay with cash or a money order. There are no local ATMS so plan ahead and stop in Reno if you need to.

NEED TO SELL A TICKET?

We get this question a lot. For persons finding themselves unable to attend Burning Man after all, and in need a place to sell tickets, we recommend you READ THIS EPLAYA THREAD FIRST: http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?t=12466

…and then list on the ePlaya in that same thread… or at Craigslist or eBay. And if you plan to BUY a ticket from a third party, you should read up too – a fair number of fake tickets ARE discovered each year, so check the ticket numbers with partiserv (at) burningman (dot) com before you buy, because learning your ticket’s fake at the gate of the event just can’t be a fun time, wethinks.

AVOID TICKET SCALPERS AND COUNTERFEIT TICKETS

For the past several years ticket scalpers in Empire and Gerlach have told burners on their way to Black Rock City that Burning Man has stopped selling tickets and that the only way to get tickets is to buy from them. Burners have then purchased higher priced tickets from scalpers, only to find out later that Burning Man was still selling tickets. Adding insult to injury, some of these burners bought counterfeit tickets which were not accepted at the Gate. Please note that ticket sales will not stop at the Box Office until 11 PM on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Do NOT buy tickets from scalpers otherwise you will pay more than you need to, and you run the risk of purchasing a counterfeit ticket.

See y’all on the playa!

The Ticket Team

LAW ENFORCEMENT: HAVE YOU HAD A BRUSH WITH THE LAW?

The Law Enforcement and Agency Liaison team (LEAL) is a branch of the Black Rock Rangers that works specifically with all the law enforcement agencies patrolling Black Rock City. This year, LEAL will provide two mechanisms for participants to give feedback to law enforcement about both positive and negative interactions. If you have had an interaction with law enforcement that you find praiseworthy or troubling then the LEAL team wants to know about it. One option is to complete a Law Enforcement Agency Feedback Form. Forms will be available at Ranger Headquarters in Center Camp. The other option is to speak to a LEAL team member directly. LEAL team members will be available for questions and concerns daily at 3:00 PM at Ranger Headquarters.

We recommend completing forms and/or talking to LEAL members as soon as possible after the incident. Acknowledging superior performance or addressing problems is much easier on playa than after the event is over. On playa, we can affect immediate change. Afterward, we can only attempt to make changes for the future.

TRAVEL NOTE

It was brought to our attention that word is out. Alturas is the last chance to gas-and-grocery when coming in from the North. However there are two more small towns located on Hwy 299/Modoc Co/Surprise Valley Rd. Cedarville has 2 stores, the Cedarville Grocery and Pages in Cedarville, CA. There is also a small Convenience Store/Cafe in Eagleville about 18 miles on Surprise Valley Road before it turns into NV Hwy 447. Eagleville is the last chance to purchase anything until arriving in the Gerlach/Empire area. However, one needs to go seven miles BEYOND Gerlach to Empire for a store, and then backtrack to the event.
