Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #17
June 23, 2008
Hello everybody … hope your springs have sprung and your summers are progressing apace. Speaking of apace, here’s a reminder that the last day to register your mutant vehicle is June 30. Art installations? July 15. Get on it! http://forms.burningman.com
Hey, ready for something cool? We’ve just launched a new blog called (what else?) The Burning Blog! Learn all about it in Latest News, but we can tell ya that it’s your source to learn all about great stuff like the recent Black Rock Arts Foundation / Burners Without Borders / Black Rock Solar / Burning Man visit to Bonnaroo … check it, yo: http://blog.burningman.com … and please do give us your opinion on the blog in our latest poll, which you can find in the (waaait for it …) “Polls” section of www.burningman.com … werd.
OK, looking to participate? Well, you can help a worthy project make it to the playa by providing financial assistance to the “Bummer” honorarium art project. But maybe you want to play a bicycle horn in a marching band, or be a sound technician? Be a part of a human pyramid-cum-redwood tree? Manage a performance stage? Get your national or spirit flag into an art installation? Hop on stage and pour your heart out? Yeah, well, we got that. Check the Participate section down yonder.
Now, you ready for your “holy crap” moment? The Man burns in 68 days. Yeah. We’ll see you soon. Burn on.
-PQ (Associate Rabbit)

ANNOUNCING THE NEW “BURNING BLOG”
The newly launched Burning Blog consolidates all of our previously- separate blogs into one convenient webspace. Why? Because we love you. That, and it’s the 21st century, yo. As you’ll see here: http://blog.burningman.com it has a beautiful new design, a bunch of topic categories, an RSS feed, and yes, it welcomes comments from all of YOU!
You’ll really want to subscribe to the RSS feed (don’t know what RSS is? Google it.), because this thing’s gonna be chock-a-block full. What can you learn about? Well, just about anything Burner-related, really … news, contemplations, events, environmental activities, participation opportunities, Burning Man afield in the world and more.
For example? You can read a post from our very own Actiongrl entitled “What IS a ‘Burner’, anyway?”, inspired by reports that some feathers got ruffled at the Rabbit’s mention of “wannabe Burners” in the last JRS (referencing people who are spiritually Burners, but haven’t yet made it to a regional event or Black Rock City). And the beauty part? You can offer your very own take on the topic in the blog comments. Yep, we’ll be working hard on our end to keep the Burning Blog fresh, hot and tasty, and we hope you’ll keep coming back.
(And, while we have your attention? The Rabbit apologies for any feathers inadvertently ruffled there, folks.)

THE “BUMMER” HONORARIUM ART PROJECT NEEDS ASSISTANCE!
LadyBee forwards us this from the “Bummer” honorarium art project team (see? here: http://tinyurl.com/4t42s9) … help them out if you can.
“In response to the American Dream theme, Myk Henry and the ‘Bummer’ team are building a gigantic Hummer made out of recycled wood. At the end of the week the structure (minus the wheels) will be burnt. This gesture can be viewed as a symbol of resistance to those huge SUV-type gas-guzzling vehicles which are certainly amplifying current issues such as global climate change and the world food shortage. Burning the “Bummer” can also be seen as a purification ritual and accolade for all those men, women and children that have lost their lives in Iraq. Read more about “Bummer” at the following links:
http://www.myspace.com/bummersculpture
http://asakomusic.com/Myk/bummer.html
We received a grant from Burning Man which will be sufficient to cover about 33% of the costs. Our team is extremely motivated and passionate about making this project happen but cannot do so without your financial support. The ‘Bummer’ team is reaching out to our friends, family and business associates for donations to help our cause.
All of your contributions will be greatly valued, no matter how small. Our suggested donation is in 3 categories a) $20 b) $50 c) $100+
Donors giving more than $50 will have their names carved into the ‘Bummer’ dash board. All donations over $100 will receive a limited edition ‘Bummer’ artwork after the burn.

MUTAYTOR DONATES SONG TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS
Buck Down of The Mutaytor (a truly classic band from the Burning Man community, who over the years have consistently blown fuel on our collective fires … we heart Mutaytor) writes to inform us that they continue to rock hard in the following way:
“The Mutaytor has dedicated and donated a song entitled ‘Sunrise’ off its new album ‘Yelling Theatre in a Crowded Fire’ to Burners Without Borders.
It lives on the BWB website and is available for 99 cent download with 100% of the proceeds going directly to BWB. The URL is:
http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/mutaytor-and-bwob
Atom wrote a little note that went over with it explaining the song: ‘Sunrise is about having such faith that tomorrow will be better that we stay up all night to greet it. Sunrise is about making tomorrow better. Sunrise is about Burners Without Borders, and artists like David Best, and the mad geniuses working out the math that makes tomorrow’s world inhabitable. It’s a love song to this community and to our heros here. You’re doing the right thing, and we support you.’
Thanks. Burn on.

BASURA SAGRADA TEMPLE? AMAZING! DONATE! VOLUNTEER!
This Rabbit just returned from a jaunt across the Bay to the Basura Sagrada Temple construction site, and holy moly how cool is it? Very. freakin’. cool. Shrine and TukTuk tell us they need donations of clean cardboard, aluminum cans, bottle caps, and tin can lids (like for tuna or whatever vegan food comes in a can). That, and people with basic welding experience (and perhaps a welder).
A full list of what they need and volunteer opportunities can be found at http://www.basurasagrada.org/ … and please, consider a financial donation if you can. We’re here to tell ya: this temple is going to be absolutely mind-blowing, and they need the community’s help to make it a reality.

CENTER CAMP CAFE PERFORMANCE STAGE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION AND DONATIONS
The Cafe is an incredible venue that bursts with an amazing amount of energy, unusual art and phenomenal(ly) strange performances. We have so much going on this year, from daily aerial times to daily a speaker series, that we are putting the call out to the community for more volunteers! The positions we schedule for our stage include:
a. Sound Technicians: People who love music. Love mixing it. Love working with bands and have prior experience with live sound engineering. It does not matter if it was in a tiny dive club or a giant venue so long as you know your stuff and are ready for a challenge of teching in a dust-storm. 😉 cafe-sound (at) burningman (dot) com
b. Gear Gods: Essentially people who know sound equipment, enjoy the weirdness of the professional sound technician, and who can lift 50lbs without hurting yourself (or anyone else for that matter). Do you know how to plug a mic into a snake? If you don’t this probably is not your ideal position. cafe-sound (at) burningman (dot) com
c. Stage Managers: Engaged, flexible, organized, detail people who can field questions from random people as well as bands who are scheduled to perform. You are the reason the stage runs on time. Or anywhere close to time. You get to be lord and master of the “GO’ button. No previous experience required … we can help you learn! cafe-stagemgrs (at) burningman (dot) com
All shifts are only 4 hours long and they fly by with an average of eight to ten acts per shift! If you are interested in coming to play in the Café, meeting really talented, funny, strange and creative people, and work with some amazing artists, this is the place to be. We would love to have you on our team!
Equipment donations needed:
– professional amplifiers (at least 600-1000 watt cabable)
– a powered subwoofer for the cofee shop
– working speaker drivers (12″, 15″ and 18″)
– mic cables, speaker cables ANY cables … never enough of these!
– odd items like folding keyboard stands
– mic stand parts, clips
– lighting towers

We will be featuring the Speaker Series, Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-12:30pm . Full hour and half hour slots available. Special priority given to subjects relating to this year’s American Dream theme or to subjects of particular interest to a broad spectrum of Burning Man participants.

PARTICIPATE IN THE BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION SCRAP EDEN ART PROJECT ON PLAYA
Calling all crafty types … particularly those with an affinity for reclaimed, reconstructed and reused fabrics!
Once again, BRAF brings the ScrapEden message of reuse and recycling to Burning Man. This year BRAF’s ScrapEden playa-garden draws on the likeness of a working class, American backyard. We’ll create a casual, welcoming environment strewn with clotheslines of colorful, flowing panels of fabric, each hand-embellished with sewn, quilted or printed words. We’ll lounge in the shade, sip lemonade and conspire to bring interactive art to communities beyond the playa.
And YOU can participate by creating your very own panel. Yes, even if you’re not able to GET to the playa, you can still mail in your contribution. It’s fun and easy … and crafty (it’s just my type)!

MUSICIANS WANTED FOR THE BURNING BAND
Members of the Burning Band write in search of people with marching band musical talent, or a reasonable facsimile thereof (this Rabbit makes himself very very small about now):
“Attention all musicians! The Burning Band wants you to perform with them during their wandering tours of the playa. Ever have a desire to stumble across the playa in a haze, but with a musical instrument that people expect you to play? THIS is your chance! The Burning Band is a pseudo marching band composed of horns, strings, percussion, noisemakers, and even non-traditional instruments. We are musically non-discriminate. In fact, some of us even sing! We’ve been performing for more than ten years on the playa, and we are always looking to attract new people to play with. THIS year we are especially on the lookout for French horn players, and drummers who actually show up for gigs (a rare commodity at Black Rock City), but we won’t be upset if you play bagpipes or bicycle horn. For more information on playing with us, or even camping with us, contact Carbon Buildup at this address:

REDWOOD RESURRECTION PROJECTS SEEKING ON-PLAYA PARTICIPANTS
We think this is pretty cool, if not for its message, then at the very least in its fearless ardor (arbor? heh). The folks from Art for The Sky are looking for participants to become a tree, then die then be a tree again. They tell us the plan:
“Redwood Resurrection: A One Thousand Human Sky Art Creation On the playa, Wed. August 27, 6:45 pm until sunset
The creation of the American empire and pursuit of the American dream has resulted in the deforestation of 95% of this country’s old growth forests. Only a remnant remains and much of that is still in danger of being cut. As visual commentary and transformation of this issue, an Art For the Sky team will facilitate the creation of a life-size version of an old growth redwood tree made entirely of human bodies . . . naked for the trunk and roots . . . and clothed, (preferably green or dark colors) for the branches. An enactment of the cutting of this tree will result in the tree of people smashing to the ground, where everyone will lay sprawled about and still as if dead. Among “the dead”, fire dancers, drummers and flute players will emerge to enchant the fallen tree back up to life and it’s original shape. Dancers will form a protective oval ring at the base, encircling the giant tree . . . lights will come on in the branches, birds will sing and then the entire tree will dance as the sun sets in the west.
We are looking for commitments for several entire camps to come so that we know we have the right amount of people. We also need about 30 “sky captains” to become familiar with the details of the design and the movement required. These should be people who aren’t afraid to shout out gentle orders to the masses around them. For the falling tree to work right, those at the top will be moving the fastest, on a scale all the way down to the bottom of the cut trunk who will have to move very little. Sky Captains will be guiding the fall and the resurrection back up. You will be a powerful bunch and should be ready to claim it! We are also seeking a few drummers, flute players (tuba would be okay too!) and about 50 fire dancers to enchant the tree back upwards. The whole event will take less than an hour.
The entire event will be filmed from high atop a crane by sky-artist Daniel Dancer who does this work across the country and abroad. You will be able to be see the film on youtube and on www.artforthesky.com within a few days of the event.
Those interested in enrolling their camps, interested musicians or fire-dancers and those special folks who would like to become one of the cherished Sky Captains should email, dancer@artforthesky.com.”

BURNING MAN STENCILS DOCUMENTED IN “STENCIL NATION” BOOK
Long-time Burner Russel Howze has a new book out about the history and art of stenciling (ed note: we love stencils … they’re like the Henry Ford of the underground art world, and the culture jammer’s best friend. Or something.). Burning Man stencils over the years are featured in this cool book. Check it out. Russel sez:
“Hey there dearest Burners,
Thought the community would be interested in checking out my just- released book ‘Stencil Nation: Graffiti, Community, and Art’ from Manic D Press in San Francisco. On top of discussing the history of the art form (rock stencils date back thousands of years; punk collective CRASS stenciled billboards in 1976) and looking at the work of some amazing artists (Banksy, Logan Hicks, Klutch, Amy Rice to name a few), I also feature some of the cities of Stencil Nation. When I started visiting Black Rock City in 1999, I began to document stencil art. I am proud to present some of those photos from our fair, temporary city in my book. You might get a good laugh at the one of the Man jumping the shark, appropriately placed, with permission, on the Astor Place subway stop last year.
Check out http://www.stencilnation.org (designed by long-time burner Antonio Gomez) to get all the latest.
Fondly,
Russell Howze”
