Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #19
July 18, 2008

Hi there!

Me again. Hi! Just hopping back into your inbox for a Friday burst of juicy JRS-ness fresh from the fingers of Mama Grace. Nice to be talking to you again.

We know, we know….the intros are the part you scan through to get to the Table of Contents and find out what applies to you. Got it. Quickly, then: we remind you that the Burning Blog continues to churn up the intertubes with all the latest Burning Man news, info, and musings…including, most recently, a post from Larry Harvey about this year’s street names (“The Streets of Black Rock City” – http://blog.burningman.com/?p=2008) . We’ve seen the same thread of conversation on a lot of local discussion lists, so perhaps you’ll find it interesting to hear the story of the street name selection from the horse’s mouth, so to speak – or to contribute your own thoughts on the matter.

The blog also contains an inspiring story from San Diego (“The Xara Village Charter School” http://blog.burningman.com/?p=2015 ) and a fresh look at some Burningman.com updates (“First Timer? Start here” http://blog.burningman.com/?p=2016) – plus all the great posts about the building of the Burning Man earlier this month… so we hope you’ll stop by the Burning Blog for a visit sometime soon.

Meanwhiiiiiiile…in this JRS we’ve got: getting there, getting your camera registered, getting your stuff there, getting your events in the WhatWhereWhen, getting involved in projects, getting the Mail in BRC getting ready for Decompressions, and getting a look at some images from previous years to get YOU in the mood — because friends, that Man burns in 43 days, and we don’t know about you, but we’re gonna be there when it does.

AIRPLAYAINFO – BURNING MAN INFO IN THE RENO AIRPORT

AirPlayaInfo – Reno Airport Friday August 22 – Friday August 29, 2008

This year Burning Man and Playa Info, in cooperation with the Reno Airport and the Reno Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be providing a satellite information desk in the baggage claim area of the Reno Airport.

AirPlayaInfo will operate from Friday, August 22nd through Friday, August 29th and provide a variety of information and resources for our Burner friends arriving into the Reno area by plane. The impetus for this “service” is to provide help to the Reno airport and to our participants as they navigate their way to and from the playa. This includes providing information and referrals to local “burner-friendly” lodging, transportation to and from the playa (this year there are two independent biodiesel shuttles providing service to the playa), local shopping and supplies, and the location and schedules for recycling and garbage disposal. AirPlayaInfo is a radical self reliance jump start and is intended to help alleviate the issue of “camping out” in the airport by early arrivals, confusion over where to find supplies locally, and to support the Leave No Trace ethos of our event by helping participants properly dispose of items they cannot take on the plane before arriving at the airport.

We have already received a great response from our Regional and Volunteer networks and are still seeking volunteers who are interested and able to staff the AirPlayaInfo table at the Reno Airport. The operating days and hours (which are aligned with the Reno Airport’s estimate of peak travel times) will be from Friday, August 22nd through Friday, August 29th from 9am to 3pm and 6pm-10pm daily. We will need at least two people per shift and shifts will be between 3-4 hours in length. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is either not attending the event this year or for anyone who is willing to “commute” from the playa to the airport to staff a shift at the AirPlayaInfo table.

The Man burns in 45 days…which means we’d like to have an idea of our staffing capabilities for this initiative as soon as possible. If you are interested and/or know someone else who may be, please contact me josh (at) burningman (dot) com via email (put AirPlayaInfo in the subject line) with your availability as soon as possible. We would also like to conduct a short (likely telephone-based) training/orientation in mid-August.

BIOBUS (space) SHUTTLE RETURNS FOR 2008

“Ride to Burning Man in style on the BIOBUS (space) SHUTTLE to Black Rock City. You will be scooped up at Reno International and whisked to Whole Foods for a quick grocery run and then on to the playa!!! This is our second year in a pilot program to lessen our cumulative impact of travel to the greatest city on Mama Earth.

A sliding scale donation of $60-$75 to Burn Clean Project will reserve a One Way ride to or from the playa, helping you to avoid burning petroleum, the cost of a car rental, and the worst part of all,Aeiscrubbing the rental car thoroughly enough so they don’t charge you a playa-sized cleaning fee!

Rides into Burning Man are available Mon. 08/25, Tues. 08/26, and Wed. 08/27. Rides back to Reno Int’l are available on Sun. 08/31 and Mon. 09/01.

Reserve seats before they’re gone at BurnCleanProject.org! http://www.burncleanproject.org

See you on the BIOBUS!”

WHAT WHERE WHEN??? HOW????

Have you been wondering when the deadline is for submitting your event to appear in the printed 2008 WhatWhereWhen? Well, we’re doing things a little differently this year. We’ve carefully considered the feedback we got from the community about the pros and cons of last year’s WhatWhereWhen (yes, we know – info was missing and it really wasn’t what it ought to have been!) and have revisited every part of its production process, soup to nuts… starting with how event entries are made.

This year for the first time ever, we are limiting the length of entries for the printed What Where When to the increasingly popular 140 character length. (When you enter in your event description there is another opportunity to enter in a lengthier description for the online version – be as verbose as you’d like there!)

We only have space to publish the first 1400 events submitted, so if you want your event to appear in print, enter it as soon as possible on the playa calendar at: http://playacal.burningman.com/edit_entry.php?date=20080825

That said, all good things must come to an end, so we will have to cut things off fairly soon in order to get this beast designed and to print in order to get it in your hot little hands on playa. So, 1400 listings, or July 20, whichever comes first.

To see how many events have already been added, please look at the upper-left area of this page that shows how many listings there are: http://playacal.burningman.com/list.php

So far we’ve already received almost 700 events! Don’t put it off any longer, submit your event info today!

CAMERA REGISTRATION? WHAT’S THE SCOOP? WHEN’S THE DEADLINE? WHAAAT?

Got camera questions? We’ll keep it simple….are you:

– Bringing a personal video camera to shoot some personal video to share with friends and family? You’ll need to register on arrival, before you shoot anything, with a Personal Use Agreement, and get your personal use camera tag. Read up on this policy AND download a PDF of the agreement to bring it with you at:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/video_cameras.html

– Bringing a video camera to shoot ANYTHING else that is intended to be shown in a public manner (whether for-profit or not!)? You need to register with Media Mecca for approval PRIOR to the Video Camera registration deadline, which is coming up on July 25th.

http://www.burningman.com/press/

– Bringing a still camera to shoot any footage that is intended to be shown in a public or commercial context in any manner (again, whether for-profit or not)? Planning any other media-related project that may or may not use images? You need to register with Media Mecca for approval prior to the general Press Registration deadline, which is coming up on August 8.

…and that’s also: http://www.burningman.com/press/

– Bringing a still camera (digital, film, disposable, pinhole, whatever) to shoot pictures of your campmate Bob wearing a hot pink latex minidress to show to your buddies back home? Planning to share those images with friends and family through a personal website, Flickr, Tribe, etc? You don’t need to register or fill anything out….but you do need to make sure Bob’s okay with that before you post them on your personal site. We’ll leave that discussion up to you and Bob…but seriously, ask first.

2007 GREEN MAN SCREEN SAVER

Tiki Bob writes: “2007 Green Man Screen saver is ready and online!

This is the 6th unofficial Burning Man Screen saver project (from fellow participants Scorch, Tiki Bob, and the Screen Saver team). Over 12,000 amazing pictures were submitted from over 70 photographers. 1485 pictures are in the final version and it was tough getting it down to a workable number…they were all so amazing. To download your own copy of 2007’s screen saver or any of the other last 6 years go to our web site at: http://www.bmscreensavers.com/id37.html

Screen Savers for most years are available in both Mac and PC format.

The BM Screen Saver Project is our gift back to the community. And I want to thank all the photographers who submitted and to everyone who is involved in the screen saver team. Remember American Dream is right around the corner and we’ll be doing this all again for 2008 so take lots of photos and remember to send them in. Go to our web site to find out how and where to send them in.

Please remember to always respect other people when taking any photos in BRC and always ask!”

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID BEST

Over the past few years key members of Detroit’s Burning Man community have worked in conjunction with BRAF, Detroit Blight Busters, and artist David Best to create the Detroit Dream Project. Not without it’s obstacles, the Detroit Dream Project finally came to fruit in a ten day period between June 10th to 20th, 2008.

The Viking Youth Power Hour ventured out to Detroit to help a bit with the Temple build and to interview temple artist David Best. We discussed the Detroit Dream Project, his Burning Man Temple’s, David’s work prior to Burning Man, work he’s planning for the future and much, much more.

TRIPS FOR KIDS HAS BIKES FOR BURNING MAN

To find LOTS OF VERY affordable, recycled bikes for Burning Man visit Re-Cyclery, a bike thrift store operated by Trips for Kids. Re-Cyclery is located at 610 4th Street in San Rafael and is open Tuesday – Friday noon – 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Each year Trips for Kids takes hundreds of inner-city kids from the Bay Area on guided mountain bike adventures, many of whom have never been outside of their urban neighborhoods. In 1999 Trips for Kids became a national program. There are now 64 chapters from coast to coast, with more in the works.

Trips for Kids/Re-Cyclery is a nonprofit bicycle program for inner city youth. Our Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift Shop has year round bargains on refurbished donated bikes. Each year many Burning Man participants visit our shop to buy their bike for the event. In fact we make a point to save bikes purposely for Burners.,

THE CAFE AND YOUR ART

Are you an artist or creative soul looking to contribute to the Burning Man event on a smaller scale? The Center Camp Cafe is an exciting place to show your work because it is a main hub of BRC’s culture and activities. The Cafe has two great projects to share with you.

(1) We have over 200 ft of plywood fence behind the Cafe to beautify PRIOR to the event. Muralists are needed at the end of set-up week, as well as artists interested in exhibiting existing artwork on the ‘Fence Gallery’.

Images from last year’s Fence Gallery: http://ferociouspixie.com/dreamscapes/fence.html

(2) The Cafe is currently seeking folks who are interested in participating in “Dreamscapes”, a multi-artist installation project in the interior spaces of the Cafe.

Photos of the Dreamscapes alcove spaces: http://ferociouspixie.com/dreamscapes/images.html

Remember: Center Camp Cafe starts caffeinating the BRC community on the first day of the event (Monday, August 27) at 7:00 am. The Fence Gallery artwork associated with the Cafe MUST be completed/installed by Monday morning. The Dreamscapes artwork should be completed by Monday evening.

Interested? For Fence art, please contact our Fence coordinator E. at esugar2601 (at) yahoo (dot) com with some examples of your work to get things going.

For Dreamscapes art, contact our special project liaison Vixen at vixen (at) burningman (dot) com.

SHEETS AND BLANKETS AND CRUTCHES, OH MY!

Although there’s something rather “American” about buying things, we’d like to think there are plenty of used crutches, sheets and blankets in your closets looking for a new home. And we have the perfect place! Burning Man Emergency Services treats thousands of our citizens every year and being able to gift a pair of crutches, or a clean and warm place to be cared for is sometimes all it takes to make a person’s experience brighter.

Have an old functioning pair of crutches? Some clean and cute sheets and blankets you think deserve being wrapped around a special someone who needs them? Then load them in your car come August and bring them to Black Rock City. The Emergency Services stations are located at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock plazas. Thank you for your gifts!

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS: THE ART OF FREEDOM

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference
August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as art? How can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (http://www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics, we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject (at) gmail (dot) com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject (at) gmail (dot) com) no later than July 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early August.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: WDYDWYD EXHIBIT AT CENTER CAMP Deadline: July 31, 2008. More info: http://wdydwyd.com/burningman

Create and submit an image answering “Why do you do what you do?” combining text & imagery.

The WDYDWYD? project got started on the playa back in 2004, and it’s one of our favorites. Its creator, Tony Deifell, has taken striking portraits of over 500 burners answering “Why do you do what you do?”. Now, he’s expanding the project for people to participate in advance and be included in an exhibition on the perimeter wall of Center Camp this year. Feel free to share this “call for entries” with your networks.

WDYDWYD? is collaborating with Brooklyn Arts Project and Working With Artists in Denver to produce this exhibit. Also, each week until the Burn, Tony has been posting one BM staff member plus one Burner from last year on this blog: http://www.wdydwyd.com

KOSTUME KULT NEEDS DONATIONS FOR COSTUME GIVEAWAY

“Glorious friends… Kostume Kult enters its 7th year of ‘costuming the naked’ in dire need. The annual lightning has yet to strike and no major costume haul has yet been had. We have never gone so long without a sufficient costume trove acquisition— Alas, the playa has yet to provide.

Shouting out to all you lovelies to consider sending us your unused costume clutter or asking your friendly local costume shop, theater group or hipster thrift store if they’d like to support the cause.

As many of you know, Kostume Kult freely gives hundreds of pounds of donated costumes and colorful fashion items to all comers, every day from our esplanade Kostume Dome. No returns necessary, no barter, no favors requested— just gifting… Based in NYC, we throw numerous fundraisers and collect stuff all year in pursuit of this mission and would dearly appreciate your help.

If you’ve got stuff, we have a CA address to ship to. If you are friendly with your local costume shop, here is a one page glossy you can print and give to them. http://www.kostumekult.com/donate/costumes.pdf

Any questions, leads – please let us know!

Imagine the beat that pulses through the playa as dance/sound camps tune in to BMIR (Burning Man Radio 94.5) on Weds. 8/27 at 10:45am to 12:15 pm to dance together in the unity that symbolizes the essence of Burning Man. Please help us make this dream a reality! Let us know if your camp can join us and host a satellite dance wave. ILLUSTRATED BURNING MAN GLOSSARY

Participant Ellin Beltz sent us this illustrated “Glossary” for Burning Man. While the images and words are from 2006, and there are a few tiny personal interpretations or slightly off-center facts (DMV volunteers, for example, do not pull people over for driving – the Rangers or law enforcement do that), for the most part it’s an adorable A to Z of playa terms that first timers especially might just love. (No offense, Ellin. It really is a fun read!)
