Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 13, Issue #10
January 8, 2009

Happy New (calendar) Year, everybody! Hope this finds you having successfully navigated the challenging waters of the holiday season … we returned from them with bleary-eyed and head-shaking confusion that has since turned into enthusiasm for 2009 and all it promises.

So onward with the good stuff! Burning Man tickets for 2009 go on sale this Wednesday, January 14 at 10am PST. Read on for more information. And while you are purchasing your tickets, please keep in mind that the Burning Man office staff will once again be donning what has become our traditional ticket day garb: our pajamas. And eating our traditional ticket day fare: bacon. (Well, the meat-eaters will, anyway. The rest will stand around commiserating about how horrific that fake bacon stuff is.) Perhaps we’ll post a photo gallery here in the future?

In other exciting news, our Art Grant proposal cycle for 2009 has started, and Crimson Rose has offered up details about how to apply. Whether or not you’re awarded a grant, we hope to see your art on the playa!

Please to read further of opportunities to participate, things to see, things to do, things to celebrate, and news of the strange and interesting that inevitably bobs in the wake of the Burning Man community.

-PQ (Associate Rabbit)

2009 ART GRANT PROPOSAL CYCLE OPENS

Burning Man is now accepting art proposals for the 2009 event and will be doing so until February 1, 2009. Proposals to apply for a grant must follow the Submission Guidelines. Please submit the following information within your proposal: Physical Description, Philosophical Statement, Detailed Drawings, Itemized Budget, Adequate Crew, Timelines (pre, event, post), Leave No Trace and if you are utilizing fire in any way, a Fire Safety Plan.

All information on applying for a grant and how to submit can be found on the Burning Man website:

http://tinyurl.com/ytptfb

Please read the Submission Guidelines carefully and be sure to submit everything required; we will not accept incomplete proposals for review. Please do not wait until the last 24 hours of the deadline to submit your proposal. The grant committee will be able to review your proposal much more carefully if you send it in during the month of January. More time to consider your proposal results in a much better understanding of it.

This year’s theme, Evolution: A Tangled Bank, prompts three related questions:
What are we as humans beings?
Where have we come from? How may we adapt to meet an ever-changing world?

EMPIRE STORE REOPENS

You may or may not have heard through the grapevine that there were some legal shenanigans that went down late last year at the Empire Store, the lone outpost for groceries and sundries on the edge of nowhere, serving the towns of Empire and Gerlach and … to a degree, Black Rock City. As a result of a dispute between the store owner and manager, the store closed down for a while, but now it’s reopened, thanks to the help of some intrepid, caring Burners. BOB HOFMANN’S BONEFIRE FLAMETHROWERS COVERED IN WIRED MAGAZINE

Hey, this is cool. WIRED Magazine did a piece on longtime Burner and fire enthusiast (is that redundant?) Bob Hofmann and his handmade Bonefire flamethrowers in their January issue, which hit newstands back on December 23rd. We have one of these babies in the Burning Man office … you know, just in case. It’s a beautiful piece of art.

ARE YOU IN THIS PICTURE? SEEKING MODEL RELEASES FOR BURNING MAN E-BOOK

Matt writes:

“I have been working on an e-book project with my Burning Man 2008 photos, which is why I have not put a gallery on the web this year. In order to get Burning Man Project’s official blessing, there are still a handful of images that I need to get model releases for. I have put those images in a gallery, in the hopes of tracking down the people pictured so I can get their permission to be in the book. This also serves as a small preview of coming attractions for the e-book:

So if you know who any of these people are, please have them contact me via my site http://www.silentcolor.com.

For more information about the e-book, and some more preview images, see

HOW TO SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE: A BURNING OPERA

Come experience “How to Survive the Apocalypse” – Premiering Jan. 16 & 17 at Stage Werx, 533 Sutter St., San Francisco. Shows Fri 1/16 @ 8:00 pm and 10:30 pm; Sat. 1/17 @ 8:00 pm.

After getting kicked off a beach for trying to burn an effigy, a small crew of freaks builds a visionary city in the desert. Three newbies arrive, each with their own baggage of fears and expectations, and make their way through the erotic, psychological, and apocalyptic minefield of the temporary festival. Then the world changes in the blink of an eye.

“How to Survive the Apocalypse” is a Burning Man-inspired theatrical freak-out that combines rock opera, vaudeville, and a Dionysian revival show that is just as inspired and terrified by current events as you are. Part mutant mystery play, part crash-course in proactive future culture, the evening combines millennialist rants and sexy burlesque with select scenes and songs from the “Burning Opera,” an ambitious and ferociously inventive rock musical scored by Mark Nichols, with libretto by counterculture writer Erik Davis.

Driven by the desire to bring the burn off the playa, but without the crusty snot, “How to Survive the Apocalypse” aims to reflect the significance of Burning Man and communicate the culture it has helped spawn to wider audiences. On a larger level, the show aims to explore the inherent conflicts and painful paradoxes of the event itself, from its tangled origins to its ongoing mutation. On an even larger level, however, the evening is completely aimless, or at least shoots from the hip in your general direction with a furry thong over its eyes.

Because of the limited run and the small number of seats at Stage Werx, we fully expect this show to sell out early. Tickets $15 in advance through Brown Bag tickets beginning 12/15; $20 at the door. The event is all-volunteer. All proceeds for the event will be donated to Intersection for the Arts.
