{================================================} =================INTRODUCTION=================== {================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

Today is an auspicious day, ladies and gentlemen (and undecideds). It’s that magic day where it’s a mere 100 days until the Man burns. Which means, after today, you’ll only need TWO digits for the remainder of your countdown (until it’s ONE digit, of course). Anyway, so yeah, Bejeezus! You getting ready? You better be!

Theme camp pre-registrations close May 31, and any non-pre-registered camping you snap up on a first-come first-served basis (don’t worry, it’s a BIG playa, with plenty of room). Speaking of playa, our DPW crew has started work weekends out at Black Rock Station, our Nevada work facility, and they report that the playa surface looks gooooood. With luck, it’ll hold up until we get there!

People are getting all revved up, as you can see on the vibrantly active Burning Man Facebook Page. There’s a great discussion cooking about what people have up their sleeve for Burning Man 2009 … hop in, the water’s great! http://tr.im/bman_fb

Today is also an auspcious day becaaaaause … we are proud to be relaunching the Burning Blog! We’ve sought out a host of excellent new writers representing a wide diversity of perspectives, plucked them from the far corners of our community, and asked them to offer their unadulterated insights on Burning Man culture out in the world. Check it out, it’s way cool:

100 days, people! Chop chop!

BURNING MAN STICKER CONTEST FOR 2009 IN EFFECT!

Hello friends and fellow playa-schwag-ophiles!

Don’t we all just love getting fabulous playa schwag to help us remember our home in the desert even when we’re away throughout the year? Well, now we want you, the Black Rock Citizens, to contribute YOUR design for the official 2009 stickers. That’s right! It’s that time of year again – time for our annual sticker contest.

This is the official call for designs for the 2009 Burning Man stickers. Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. Several designs will be selected — the other designs will become official sticker schwag passed out randomly by staff and volunteers at the event and throughout the year.

Your sticker designs can vary in size from 2.25″ by 5.5″ to 3″ by 3″. Round designs should be 3″ in diameter.

Designs for the car window stickers should be 2″ by 2″. Round car window stickers should be 2″ in diameter.

Please incorporate both the name Burning Man and the year 2009 into your design for either type of sticker. Unfortunately, sticker designs are limited to only TWO or THREE colors. Please design accordingly.

Whichever type of sticker tickles your fancy (or maybe your very ticklish and want to enter several designs), remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme. This year’s theme is “Evolution”. Read up on it here:

http://bit.ly/sdrPd

How to submit: If at all possible, PLEASE post your design on a web page and send the URL to stickers (at) burningman (dot) com … otherwise, send in a color separated vector Adobe Illustrator file to stickers (at) burningman (dot) com . Whether sending your design or questions, please put “STICKER DESIGN” in the subject header.

The deadline for design submissions is Sunday June 14th.

Once again, please note that all artwork selected for stickers needs to be submitted in a color separated vector Illustrator file in the actual size the sticker is to be produced.

Thank You and Good Luck!

“BURN ON THE BAYOU” – BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS DVD IN MARKETPLACE

Burning Man is proud and honored to share the story of the origin of Burners Without Borders – what is now a social phenomenon for Burners around the globe has its roots in 2005, when a group of Burner volunteers headed for the Gulf Coast to lend a hand after Hurricane Katrina.

While many wonderful documentaries have tried to tell the story of Burning Man the event, this film is a rare look at Burning Man the cultural philosophy, and how the experience of Black Rock City inspired participants to give passionately of themselves in the wake of a devastating natural disaster.

“Burn on the Bayou” is a story that’s meant to be shared: if you’ve been before and had trouble explaining to family or friends that Burning Man is more than just an event, this film provides a fine example…or if you’re coming for the first time, it’ll lend depth to your understanding of the culture you’re about to experience. Check it out and let us know what you think.

SKIP YOUR LATTE, SAVE A TEACHER, IN BURNING MAN’S BACK YARD

Black Rock Solar’s Tom Price writes:

“It’s not often you get a chance to make a big difference with a small donation, but this is one of those times. Black Rock Solar is asking you to skip your latte today, and help us save a teacher’s job in a community in need.

As many of you know, although Burning Man actually happens in Pershing County, NV most of the money spent for the event ends up in Reno/ Sparks. Little of the economic benefit of the event ends up in Lovelock, Pershing’s county’s main community. Lovelock has been in for some very tough economic times because of the recession. How tough? Their school district just had to lay off six of their 40 teachers, just to make ends meet. So the Burning Man community is pitching in to help them out.

This is where we, and you, and all of us come in. Black Rock Solar has lined up more than 90% of the resources to build a 50 kilowatt solar array, to help slash their electricity bill. We need to raise another $20,000 in June to build this project before the event. If you can chip in just a few dollars, together we’ll raise what we need. If we raise more, we’ll build more–and all at absolutely no cost to them. (The community is helping out with loaned heavy equipment, free housing for our crew, etc…they just can’t afford any cash contribution).

This solar array will save them a *lot* of money. How much? In the words of the Superintendant Dan Fox “it’s gonna save jobs–we can keep a teacher’s assistant in the classroom if this happens.” The other really cool thing about this project? It will save them at least $12,000 a year, every year, for the next 25 years–that’s $300,000 over the life of this solar array.

This is the gift economy in practice, out in the real world, helping keep a teacher in a classroom. Please visit http://is.gd/FElS to learn more, and donate $5 or as much as you can afford. We’ll put the names of every donor to this project on a plaque at the array. Thanks for your help!”

NEW FLAMETHROWER REGULATIONS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA

The following is a communique from the State fire Marshal’s office regarding a “flamethrower” bill that’s been long in coming into law. It’s scheduled to go into effect July 1st 2009 and puts strong prohibitions on devices that “shoot flammable LIQUID more than 10 feet.”

Because of work done by NAFAA and ASEPO, fire breathers are not affected by this, nor are most propane devices. However, some of the devices found on the playa may fall under this bill and become ‘military grade weaponry’ legal status for ownership and use in the state of California.

— Tedward, webmaster
http://www.NAFAA.org

To Interested Parties:

On May 15, 2009, a Notice of Proposed Regulations related to Flamethrowing Devices, Title 19, State Fire Marshal, is published in the California Regulatory Notice Register at:

http://www.oal.ca.gov/reg_notice.htm

For your convenience the following documents may be accessed on the State Fire Marshal website at:

http://bit.ly/l31QL

1. The Notice of Proposed Regulations (NOPR),
2. The proposed text of the regulations (Express Terms) and other reference materials
3. The Initial Statement of Reasons (ISOR) for the proposed action

The State Fire Marshal will accept written comments on the proposed regulations for the next 45 days beginning May 15, 2009 until 5 pm on June 29, 2009.

Thank you.
