There’s a dedicated crew of volunteers at Burning Man HQ this week, stuffing the freshly-printed Burning Man Survival Guides into envelopes, readying them to get stuffed down the ol’ mail slot, en route to your hot little hands. We’ll also have the online version ready for you toot sweet, so stay tuned for that.

And a warning … now’s about the time we’re going to start hitting hard with all the pre-playa event information you need to get ready for the Burn, so it’s going to be coming fast and furious. We’ll title each one appropriately for your browsing convenience. Buckle up cowboy! This horse is gonna ride!

Yep yep, it’s mid-July, and we’re in high gear now … time to get serious about pulling out your playa gear, cleaning up what can be cleaned, fixing what needs fixing, replacing what needs replacing, checking that packing list (note: find packing list), and probably finding that — ew — thing in the bottom of that one tote. Dude, seriously. Yeah, we’re all about to learn what happens to stuff that’s been stewing in playa dust for a year. 🙂

All kindsa good stuff down below for you today … hope you’re getting as excited as we are, because the Man burns in 51 days!

RAYGUN GOTHIC ROCKETSHIP IS LANDING IN SAN FRANCISCO

The Black Rock Arts Foundation reports:

“The countdown is on! The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is landing at San Francisco’s waterfront this August. Look for the Rocket Stop (think bus stop) the first week of August on Pier 14, and for the Rocketship’s landing soon thereafter!

Local San Francisco residents and businesses, city officials and, of course, BRAF supporters and Burners alike are thrilled about the arrival of the Rocketship, but this bold endeavor still needs your support! The BRAF Board, staff and core supporters are pooling their resources, but this ambitious project needs your donations to ensure the longevity of the Rocketship’s stay, and the future of BRAF’s Civic Arts Program.

We want the world to see this and other prime examples of the stunning, engaging, and groundbreaking artwork our community is capable of producing. Help us further evolve and spread our Civic Arts Program, and share the art we love with cities everywhere!

And did we mention schwag? Donate now and receive some very exclusive, special and cool thank you gifts from the Raygun Gothic Rocketship crew!

Visit http://donate.blackrockarts.org to make a donation.

Or visit http://blackrockarts.org/projects/raygun-gothic-rocketship to read more about the Rockeships’s landing and cool thank you gifts.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the opening reception for the Raygun Gothic Rocketship, and join in the celebration of awesome public art!

Blast off!”

Pssst … want to see some pretty pictures of the Rocketship? OK: http://bit.ly/aLrH7c

BIODIESEL FUEL DELIVERY TO THE PLAYA

Bently Biofuels will be making pre-arranged deliveries of high-quality B99.9 biodiesel fuel again this year to fellow burners during Burning Man. Bently, which is based near the Reno area, has been very supportive of burners both off and on the playa, and if you’re interested in taking advantage of this opportunity to fuel your camp or mutant vehicle diesel needs, they’ll need to hear from you soon.

Please call Carlo Luri directly at 775-720-0754 as early as convenient to arrange fuel delivery. Generally, it’s easier for them — and therefore for everyone — if they have the bulk of their orders in the pipe, getting into August.

When you call, please have important information ready, like: accurate fuel needs, off-road or on-road fuel, contact person, and camp location (when available). ALL deliveries are pre-pay. Bently will however not be providing fuel storage containers for the event, but can be contacted for guidance as to safe and appropriate, Leave-No-Trace storage on-playa. Weather can sometimes make fuel deliveries impossible, so please plan accordingly, and make sure you have enough fuel on hand to get you through a few days. Here is their website for further info:

WHAT’S NEW IN THE BURNING BLOG?

Digital Rights: Debates in the Dust
As you may have read in the blogosphere, the Burning Man Project has been undergoing a review of legal terms related to media documentation at the event. And while the goal of this effort is to determine the specific legal language on the ticket and Burning Man’s Terms and Conditions, it’s really about accurately reflecting the culture and community of the Burning Man event. We invite you to join the discussion about this highly complex, nuanced issue. http://blog.burningman.com/digitalrights

Raising the Man, by Dan Miller
When we raise the Man, we also raise ourselves. Dan Miller, who managed the construction and raising of the Man from 1990 to 2000, tells about the early years, and how an act of inspired radical self-expression evolved into a powerful expression of community. http://bit.ly/db3oRf

EVAPOTRON WORKSHOP IN SF & OAKLAND

Three spaces remain for building evapotrons at the July 24 workshop at Sports Basement in San Francisco (the Mission store), so sign up now to solve your camp’s graywater disposal problems. Contact ember (at) burningman (dot) com.

Our first two workshops were fun and productive; the next one, in Oakland, is filled and heavily waitlisted. We start at 10am and finish around 5pm, the cost for parts is $50, and there’s more info at tinyurl.com/evapotron

BARS & DRINKING AT BURNING MAN – “ARE YOU 21?”

Planning to gift booze on the playa? Planning to drink it? Whether theme camp, art car, or on stilts, you should be aware of Nevada laws on underage drinking. Law enforcement at Burning Man takes this issue VERY seriously – as in, undercover stings, major fines, and sucky experiences all around kind of serious. We know our community always hits the mark when they have the right information, and handles this issue responsibly.

So….below you’ll find helpful information about servin’ and drinkin’ alcohol at Burning Man. READ UP, if you’ll be doing either one.

– It is a misdemeanor to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone under 21 years old in Nevada. The law still applies if the alcohol is gifted as opposed to sold. Theme camps are considered public space and subject to enforcement of this law. (NRS 202.055) In 2001 the Nevada State Supreme Court limited the application of NRS 202.055 to only servers who had actual or constructive knowledge that the person seeking the alcohol was under 21. This means that you must card someone who looks underage. Conversely, if someone looks of age you are not required to card him or her.

– It is a misdemeanor for a minor to consume or possess an alcoholic beverage in a public space (e.g., theme camps, open playa, center camp, etc). (NRS 202.020)

– It is a misdemeanor for a minor to pass him or herself off as being of age. (NRS 202.040)

– Misdemeanors carry the following penalties: Up to 6 months in county jail, and/or a fine up to $1,000. Alternatively, community service may be sentenced in lieu of, or in conjunction with jail time and fines. (NRS 176.087)

– If a minor loiters in a place where alcoholic beverages are consumed (besides a food establishment) then the minor could receive a fine up to $500. (NRS 202.030) Also, if the person in charge of the “tavern” allows the minor to loiter then he or she could be fined up to $500 also. (NRS 202.060)

Enforcement of the laws is either done by carding the person outright, or through undercover sting operations. None of this is new and not terribly different from most other state laws.

But what can you do to #1 Avoid illegally serving minors?, #2 Avoid being cited, or #3 If cited, demonstrate the due diligence against serving minors you used when operating a bar on the playa?

1) Don’t serve anyone without ID who appears underage.
2) Ask for ID for anyone who appears underage. Learn to read it properly and determine by the date of birth if the person is old enough to drink.
3) Post “No Minors Allowed – No Minors Served” signs to discourage minors from committing a misdemeanor by loitering, requesting, or consuming alcohol at your bar.
4) Do not allow minors to loiter at your bar: ask them to leave.
5) Confer with a co-server — get a second opinion — when a patron appears “youthfully” over 21.
6) Work together – if you have refused to serve a patron because they do not appear to be of legal age, notify all your bar servers of your decision. There may be undercover operatives working with local law enforcement that attempt to be served more than once.

(NOTE: Federal and local law enforcement priorities differ on one or more of these issue. If you find yourself in an unfortunate encounter please get a badge number and/or name and note what agency you are dealing with. It might come in handy.)

Bottom line: NEVER, NEVER knowingly serve alcohol to a minor! It’s illegal. It’s not cool. It’s not community minded.

AND — the nice folks at camp Abstininthe remind those of you who are blessed enough to look young should carry your ID with you at the event, because they – and other camps – should, and will, be asking you to verify your age.

PIMP YOUR RV … HERE’S HOW

Brett Spivey writes to offer up this clever idea for you folks renting RVs:

“Hi JRS, long time Burner here, I’ve placed some ideas via Instructables for the RV renters out there — because i’m tired of being in our magnificent playa city and entering someone’s RV only to teleport into a horrible San Dimas motel room.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Redecorating-Your-Rental-RV/

If it helps just one newbie in preventing “RV hell” then this has all been worth it…

thanks

Brett Spivey (Burner: 1999-present)”

CRITICAL TITS SEEKS SACRED SPACE HOLDERS

Our friends at Critical Tits write:

“Critical Tits needs volunteers of all flavors to become Sacred Space Holders. Anyone can become a Sacred Space Holder for a couple hours Friday afternoon on the playa to create a space where the women of Burning Man are free and safe to explore all that moves through us: Joy, sweetness, and power as well as discomfort, vulnerability, tears, and the unknown. After the 15th annual topless joyride around the playa, all women are invited to take part in this post-ride ritual that will include singing, drumming, and a guided ecstatic dance called Body Prayer. To get involved, contact us at info2010(at)criticaltits(dot)com. Also find us on Facebook as ‘Sacred Space Holders’ or visit our website at http://www.criticaltits.com.”

BMIR REQUESTS: YOUR (CHILLED OUT) INPUT DESIRED

The BMIR crew writes:

“BMIR, (Burning Man Information Radio, 94.5 FM is searching and seeking for the soothing sounds of a few ambient/space DJ’s/Selector’s for Sunday nights Temple burn.

We’re going to feature 4 hours of ambient and space music leading up to, during, and after the temple burn this year. We were thinking that we’d go through the library and just throw anything that sounded appropriate on….then we realized, NO, we can’t do that! We have amazing talent in our community and can reach out and find folks who ARE ambient/space DJ’s to do this much better than we could ever imagine….especially considering most of us can barely walk, talk or think by the time Sunday arrives in BRC.

NO, you don’t have to be in the studio and miss what’s sure to be a beautiful moment on the playa. We are planning on locking up the station and walking away after hitting play on your pre-made mixes…and letting the music guide us towards the deep playa where all the hippies will play drums and chant something about the earth mother and this years Temple of Flux will go up in glorious FLAMES!

Interested in providing a few hours of this melange of mellowness? Shoot us an e-mail and a sample here – Bobzilla (at) Burningman (dot) com

BURNIFY BAGRAM AIRFORCE BASE, AFGHANISTAN

This? Is a pretty cool opportunity. We think our JRS subscribers should send Joseph good (appropriate) stuff to spruce up his clinic there in Afghanistan. Joseph writes:

“I am a ‘Burner’ and have found my tribe in Burning Man. I am active duty Air Force here at Bagram AB, Afghanistan and unfortunately will miss BRC this year due to my deployment. I have talked up BM to some of my more ‘open minded’ military colleagues and the makings of a new camp could be in the works for ’11. I am thinking ‘Task Force Love Machine’ or something like that…

Anyway, I know you guys are exceedingly busy but if it would be possible to send a Burning Man care package with various detritus associated with the event, I could hang some of the items up to spruce up our clinic and pass out to future burners. There are strict rules re: ‘porno’ here so would have to be stuff you’d send to Grandma.

My address is:

Joseph Rogers
Task Force Med-E/Physical Therapy
Bagram AB
APO AE 09352

I’ll be keeping up with Metropolis via friends on the inside and the )'( website.

Cheers,

Lt Col J.S. Rogers, USAF”

WINDOWS :: Joys & Panes of a Metropolis is a benefit for the Burning Man Temple. WINDOWS will celebrate our urban, lived experience – and how that experience appears when gazing through the lens of glass, walls, and our subjective views.

Old Windows are the canvases and by transforming them into art, we have an opportunity to examine what it feels like to have our lives framed by these impersonal objects. Looking out or looking in, we are all occasional voyeurs.

We’re looking for more artists to create windows AND to paint live at the event. For details on how to get involved, visit our event page: http://temple2010.org/windows or contact sarah (at) temple2010 (dot) org
