{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Happy new year, people! Wow, it’s 2011. And just like that (*snap!*), tickets for Burning Man 2011 go on sale this Wednesday, January 19th at 10am PST. All the information you need to know to prepare yourself (and you DO want to prepare yourself) for the ticket launch can be found on our ticket page here:

http://tickets.burningman.com

Here’s how this works. We have a multi-tiered ticket pricing system. We do this in order to offer cheaper tickets for people WHO NEED THEM (ahem) that are subsidized by people WHO CAN AFFORD MORE EXPENSIVE TICKETS (ahem). This is part and parcel of being part of the Burning Man community: gifting. So when you buy your ticket at the (ahem) HIGHEST TICKET PRICE YOU CAN AFFORD, you are gifting cheaper tickets to your community.

Subtle, aren’t we? But you get the point.

Now, have you ever thought “Boy howdy! Burning Man tickets are so expensive! WTF?”? Or have you wondered where exactly your ticket money goes? Well, you’re not alone. And so, to help put the ticket price in perspective and answer that question, we’ve added a new page, “Where Does My Ticket Money Go?”:

www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/ticketprices.html

We hope this helps you see how your ticket money is used… not only in creating the Burning Man event, but in supporting Burning Man community the other 51 weeks of the year. The Burning Man organization is up to some great stuff year-round, and there’s a lot more to come!

We’ll see you online at the ticket launch on Wednesday!

BURNING MAN COVERED IN “PLACES” JOURNAL

Here’s a good essay about Burning Man in ‘Places’, an interdisciplinary journal of contemporary architecture, landscape, and urbanism.

BURNING MAN SOUNDSCAPE IN “PLACES” JOURNAL

Josh writes:

Following our publication of Nate Berg’s essay “Burning Man and the Metropolis” on Monday, I’m pleased to share that we’ve just published a related audio feature, “Soundscapes: Burning Man,” by architect Nick Sowers, with a selection of soundscapes recorded at the event, including a fire organ, a dust storm, a door to nowhere, and of course the oontz-oontz of the techno beat.

The feature can be found here: http://places.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=23868

best, josh

BURNING MAN’S INFLUENCE ON NEW MEDIA INDUSTRIES

Fred Turner, Associate Professor of Communication at Stanford University, gave a great talk the other day about how Burning Man culture has influenced new forms of production in Silicon Valley, and particularly at Google. Here’s a snippet from the abstract:

“It shows how elements of the Burning Man world – including the building of a sociotechnical commons, participation in project-based artistic labor and the fusion of social and professional interaction – help to shape and legitimate the collaborative manufacturing processes driving the growth of Google and other firms. The article develops the notion that Burning Man serves as a key cultural infrastructure for the Bay Area’s new media industries.”

Interesting, right? If you’d like to read Fred’s paper, you can find the PDF here:

Once the video of the talk is online, we’ll be sure to post it here.

CALL FOR ARTISTS: PROJECT 2048 ARTIST RESIDENCY, SF

Project 2048 is hosted by the arts collective Cell Space a cravenness multi-level warehouse with over 10,000 square feet of art and artists. Thousands of folks pass each year through our door for events, classes and art exhibitions. Over the last 14 years Cell has continuously brought art, learning and event after event to our community. So many great Bay Area artist and event producers have cut their teeth here such as AWD, Chicken John and Circus Redickuless, Monkey Thump Puppet Troupe, Sisters of the Underground, RainDance, Yoga Tai Chi Posse, Fog City Wrestling, Burning Art, Sustainable Living Road Show, Bay Area Derby Girls, Vau De Vire, Flaming Lotus Girls and we could go on and on ….

We are within public transportation distance from most of the large arts collectives such as The Box Shop, The Ship Yard, The Crucible, Nimby, American Steel and many other of the great Bay Area Art spaces.

The Details

The Artist Quarters are separated from the main area of Cell and has its own entrance. The units themselves and the common areas are newly remodeled, furnished, and rather comfy… We are equipped with wireless Internet and a house Imac for your use.

There is a shared kitchen and bathroom and tenants are expected to share the upkeep of these areas. Each person is expected to pay a program fee of $650 per month. At the completion of the residency you will be given space to present your work in a gallery exhibit or performance. Artists can also present works in progress in monthly first Thursday gallery shows.

The Cell Space is host to 1 or 2 nighttime events each week and the weekday evenings are filled with arts classes and programs. With the artist quarters located above the space it can be noisy and busy, but for those looking for complete immersion in the San Francisco arts community it is an ideal place to practice your art and to be exposed to an endless variety of artistic forms and practices.

The Cell Space is a thriving arts space and residents will also have opportunities to meet other working artists and have their work seen and experienced by hundreds of visitors while having their work influenced by theses interactions and collaborations.

Let us know if you have any questions or in San Francisco and would like to have a look around…

PHOTO GALLERY BY TRISTAN SAVATIER

Once again, we were lucky to have photographer Tristan Savatier on playa, armed with his trusty cameras. The result is, as always, stunning. There’s a safe-for-work set, and an uncensored set. Pick yours as you will.
