{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** And now … we’re pleased to present a special guest … the wonderful Actiongrl, here to serve up the introduction for this JRS!

Howdy friends! Andie Grace here, coming at you with this week’s helping of Jack Rabbitty goodness to rile you up as we coast into spring. HOLY WOW THE MAN BURNS IN 141 DAYS. Time flies, yes, but in 2011 it feels like it flies very fast indeed.

What’s new around HQ? LOTS. For starters, over the April 1st weekend, Burning Man hosted the 5th annual Regional Leadership Summit here in San Francisco. A record number (150+) of regional representatives and community leaders to share ideas, and collaborate on the future of Burning Man culture all over the world. It was an incredibly information-packed and inspirational weekend for all involved, and we’re still vibrating with the enthusiasm and brilliance of all those amazing local leaders.

If you haven’t yet, now is a GREAT time to get involved with your local Regional group. You can find your nearest local contact point here:

http://regionals.burningman.com

Just send a note to introduce yourself, and subscribe to your local announce list! There are plenty of friendly faces for you to connect with, projects seeking participants, weekly or monthly meetup events, film screenings, first-timer workshops, civic project opportunities, creative workshops, and other fantastic social and cultural opportunities — and they’re truly all over the world with new contacts being added every month!

The Regional Network is your link to the Burning Man culture that exists 365 days a year — sure, it’s a great way to meet people if it’s your first time heading to the playa and you just want to connect with those who may share tips and advice, but you may find yourself falling into a whole new local community that’s bringing Burning Man to your hometown. Check it out and tell us your stories!

In BRC news: we’re excited to give you a sneak peak at this year’s Temple project, which will be appropriately gorgeous, inspiring, and collaborative … no surprise. We’re also very excited to present to you the 2011 Circle of Regional Effigies project, a huge collaboration between regional groups all over the world…more on that below. And the Support-A-Project campaigns are flyin’ – check the section below on how you can contribute to the creation of art in BRC this year!

THE TEMPLE OF TRANSITION PROJECT FOR BURNING MAN 2011

We wanted to start off on a high note in this JRS … so here we go … we’re super excited to present the Temple project for Burning Man 2011. The International Arts Megacrew writes:

“Over the past 11 years, the Temple at Burning Man has evolved and grown to become a place of reflection, of remembrance and letting go; a place of union, gathering, and peacefulness. From every corner of the Burning Man Community, an International Arts Megacrew is coming together to create this year’s Temple for our desert family – The Temple of Transition.

We commit to creating a structure that enables and affirms these differing types of activities for as wide a range of participants as possible. We believe that the Temple, and the experiences within & around it, are created not by us (the builders), but by our Community as the event unfolds. What we call “The Temple” is a collective Idea, a Feeling, an Aura projected from the Participants onto the blank template of the building itself. It is therefore our mission to create the Temple as an empty, yet simultaneously beautiful, inspiring, and supportive vessel, that gently suggests & enables Participants to both feel & interact with it’s intangible essence.”

To see the design, learn about the team, and find out how you can help make it happen (Kickstarter link is within!) visit their website:

http://temple2011.org/

All we can say is: wow.

PARTICIPATE IN THE BURNING MAN RESOURCE LISTING

Once again, we’ll be publishing a Resource Listing for businesses that provide goods and services that are of interest to the Burning Man community. Our goal with this is to support the cottage industry that has grown up around Burning Man over the years, particularly (but not limited to) Burner-owned businesses, as well as making our community aware of these resources.

We will be opening up submissions via an online form on May 1, and we will close it on May 15. Late submissions will not be considered, no exceptions. The listing will be published on the Burning Man website by June 1, and we’ll post the link on the JRS, on our Facebook Page, and Twitter feeds.

So if you’d like to submit your listing for consideration, have it ready to go by May 1 – and no need to send us anything sooner, as we do not post these listings in our regular JRS issues.

(Note: We reserve the right to NOT publish a listing on our resource page or to edit these listings, and we will not post links to businesses that aren’t directly related to resources for planning or building in BRC.)

WALK-IN TICKET OUTLETS ANNOUNCED

We’ve announced our walk-in ticket outlets for 2011, and you can find the list here:

http://tickets.burningman.com

Please note that this year, ticket sales at our outlets will end on July 31, 2011.

Also, the owner of Cheap Thrills, our Sacramento outlet, has retired this year, and so they’ve gone out of business. We appreciate their support over the years!! (Note: We are not seeking a replacement outlet in the area in 2011.)

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES – 2010-2011 BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

The plaque is not displayed in the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants. Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 29th) through Friday (September 2nd).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

ANNOUNCING THE CIRCLE OF REGIONAL EFFIGIES AT BURNING MAN 2011

The Circle of Regional Effigies (or CORE Project) is a collaborative exhibition that will surround the Burning Man in 2011. The first project of its kind in Black Rock City, the CORE project will be comprised of twenty-four effigies, each created by a local outpost of the Regional Network; these effigies will be placed in a circle just outside the Man’s L3K perimeter.

A massive collaboration by Burning Man and regional groups all over the world, the CORE Project’s quadrants will be anchored by four hearth sculptures (Charlie Smith’s “The Fire Birds of the Fifth Direction”); each will offer the circle’s visitors a warm gathering place in the night. The CORE Project will culminate in a coordinated burn event on Thursday night, a fitting Rite of Passage to mark our culture’s evolution far beyond the bounds of Black Rock City.

Keep your eyes on this space for information about the 24 groups participating in this historic collaboration! We’ll update the JRS regularly with updates and information, including how you can participate on CORE Burn Night!

UPDATE: NEVADA BRC STORAGE FOR PROJECTS (FAQ)

Last month we announced a new storage option for Black Rock City projects, intended to help our participants, artists and theme camps with storage near the event. The response has been wonderful, and we are enjoying hearing stories from the community about what they’ll be able to do now that certain parts of their infrastructure can live in the desert & be built on each year!

To recap, we are offering participants the opportunity to purchase a 20 foot shipping container. Your container will be delivered to Black Rock City each year. We have had a great response, and we may need to cut off sign up around June 15th (or when space runs out in the program). One camp has reserved two containers – yes, you can submit multiple applications if you need more than one.

Below, some additional FAQ responses & tips identified since the first announcement:

– Remember Theme Camp and Department Placement Questionnaires are Due April 28th. Consider incorporation of the 20’x8’x8′ container in your camp diagram. Even if you haven’t put in your final order for the container, camps are still allocating a space for them in their plans.

Q: Is the container purchase and delivery service for placed theme camps only?

A: No, any individual or group that attends Burning Man can take advantage of this service. A group of members from various infrastructural teams have also discussed organizing a shared container – info is on the page. The FAQ describes how we will work with non-placed camps, in the event that there is no specific “placement” option known prior to arrival. Please read the updated FAQ for more information.

Q: Can I build out the inside of the container?
A: So far we have heard of camps planning to bring extra wood this year and build out shelving inside. Once emptied, you can also use them as a wind block, or anchor points for your camp. Just remember, don’t drill or alter them structurally as they are water and wind tight. Consider creating a wooden substructure inside that doesn’t require drilling the container – and if you can, cut the pieces at home & avoid creating sawdust on the playa (if you must cut there, please do so inside the container & keep sawdust contained – sawdust is MOOP!

Q: What are the dimensions and specs?
A: External Dimensions = 20’x8’6. Internal Dimensions =19’3 length, 7’4 height. Floor area = 150 sq ft. Door opening width = 7’8. Door opening height = 7’1. Weight = 4650 lbs.

Q: Are there still containers left?
A: If the signup form is still online, you can still apply and get in the queue.

More information and the link to sign up is available at:
http://storage.burningman.com

DILLON’S BURNING MAN 2010 MIXTAPE

Remember poring over your record albums, picking JUST the right songs to put in JUST the right order to express JUST the right emotions for that VERY special person? Yeah, we all love a good mixtape, right? Well, Dillon made one for all of us … awww! (Warning: contains dubstep, for the dubstep-averse – you know who you are.) He writes:

“Hello! I made a mixtape with what I took away from Burning Man 2010 in terms of music. These were the tracks I heard the most on the playa, the songs that made me dance the hardest, or the anthems that made everyone go crazy.

I finished it around the halfway mark in the year until the next Burning Man, thus the name, Burnal Equinox. (like the party) I think it has the potential to make some people homesick in a good way. 🙂

Thanks,
Dillon”

PARTICIPATE IN THE CENTER CAMP CAFE SPEAKERS’ SERIES!

You have a brain. And expertise. And no fear of dialogues with strangers.

Potentially you are a leader in your field, or have new ideas in your field. You are a scientist, a professor, an author, a historian, an analyst, an entrepreneur, a radical, a co-op founder, a collaborative consumption specialist, a person with ideas to change the world and the want to share your ideas with a new audience, at Burning Man.

Welcome to our new expanded Speaker Series: “Training for a (R)evolution” between the hours of 9-11am Tuesday-Sunday on the Spoken Word Stage. Proposals are now being accepted at speakerseries (at) burningman (dot) com.

These talks will be brief, well structured and intimate. Talks will be 5-15 minutes long followed by a short, moderated Q & A. General Burning Man ethos and values must be upheld: no promotions of products, corporations or political candidates.

Proposals should include:

– A list of credentials/expertise/references (whether through work, personal experience, education, etc)
– How the talk may be interactive (besides the Q+A). Will there be diagrams/art/exercises and thought experiments to lead the audience through? This part of the proposal is extremely important for we do not have media available to utilize: no projectors, no handouts (MOOP), no computers, etc.

NEW YORK BURNERS: TOWN HALL MEETING TO PLAN NYC CORE EFFIGY FOR BRC!

“Calling All NYC Area Burners!

You’ve probably heard about the CORE effigy project: a highly ambitious undertaking that aims to conduct a simultaneous Thursday night burn of 24 effigies representing different regions of Burners from all over the world.

This will be the LARGEST COORDINATED BURN IN BURNING MAN HISTORY. For the NYC region, it’s an amazing opportunity to come together as a community and create something mind-blowing. And that’s why it’s so important that all of us get involved.

Please join us for a Town Hall meeting at next weeks Burning Man Happy Hour (courtesy of Mayor Ratti) to discuss the CORE Effigy project and YOUR role in it:

WHEN: Next Wednesday, April 20 at 7 pm

WHERE: Upstairs at Revival, 129 East 15th Street, 7pm

Bring your questions, ideas and creativity!

We’d love to see at least one representative from each theme camp and art collective, so please forward this far and wide and talk to your campmates about who’s attending.

There are roles on and off playa, roles for every level of commitment and all ranges of talent!! There are roles for artists, designers, builders, organizers, fundraisers, burn perimeter monitors, Leave No Trace experts and more. Anyone can particpate and have a say in this project.

We’re going to need a big crew to pull this off, and again no matter what your skill set or experience, whether you have all the time in the world or can spare 35 seconds every third Tuesday, we want you to be involved.

This is our opportunity to really do something spectacular not just as individuals and theme camps, but as a community. So let’s do it right, make it awesome and make it truly unique!

Cinemagirl, Not That Dave, & O Man”

….AND IRELAND, TOO! CORE PROJECT COLLABORATORS WANTED

“Ireland CORE project needs YOU

The Irish CORE team is looking for people who want to participate in what may be the largest art project in Burning Man’s long history.

The Irish project has a bigger challenge than the rest of the participants because we are ‘small and far away’ – we are the only non-North American region joining in this historic installation in 2011! We need participants NOW to help us plan and build it here as well as on the playa.

Email Ireland (at) burningman (dot) com if you would like to help.

Although everyone is useful and a variety of skills are needed, we especially need people with CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE to help design and build this baby in Ireland before it is shipped off the island.

Additionally, we need someone who will function as FIRE LEAD. this person will ensure the fire-safety crew functions properly and that fire safety guidelines are being followed.

We also need a LEAVE NO TRACE LEAD for post-burn cleanup oversight and many volunteers to populate the FIRE PERIMETER during the burn itself.

What’s in it for you? You get to arrive on-playa up to a week early to help build Ireland’s biggest art project. You’ll get to work with other Irish (and non) who are dedicated to ensuring the success of this ambitious work. And you’ll get the thrill of working on an utterly unique art installation that will remembered in thousands of hearts, minds, and images for many years to come.

Email Ireland (at) burningman (dot) com if you would like to help.”

WALKABOUT WOODS PLAYLAND INVITES COLLABORATION

Jonah writes:

“Walkabout Woods Invites Collaboration in the form of Public Performances, Rituals, and Happenings

Walkabout Woods is a vast abstract forest playland destined for the playa in 2011. Within the forest a number of interactive surprises will be hidden, including “The Boiler Rooms” and a 20-ft climbable pyramid. We plan on designing a clearing in the woods that will act as a meeting ground, a public space within which we invite all manner of events and spectacles. We are interested in hearing your ideas and providing you with whatever support we can.

Learn more about our project and how you can help here: http://kck.st/g4Q9vo

You can submit your ideas in the form of comments on our facebook page. We will reply to every post. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Walkabout-Woods-A-Burning-Man-2011-Art-Installation/188275324542069

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CAIRO RISING RECORDING PROJECT

It isn’t everyday that you have the opportunity to support the youth who have lead a democratic uprising in the Middle East. Well, you can leave it up to this community to create a unique way that just might make history. Hookahdome DJ and music producer Jef Stott is launching an incredible project to document the people’s uprising in the Middle East, and he needs your support to make it a reality.

The Cairo Rising Recording Project is a collaborative project (album recording/ live concert/ website/ feature documentary film) of young Arabic fusion artists recorded in Cairo documenting the uprisings in Egypt. These are the voices of change and justice that are making history now and with elections in September, time is of the essence to get this project underway. This project will provide a platform to broadcast youth’s voices that are behind the stories we see in the news everyday.

Jef has been collaborating with Middle Eastern artists for over a decade and has all of the pieces in place to make this project a success. Now, he needs our community’s support to reach the funding goal. We have the power to make this project a reality and the rare opportunity to support the music and art that is creating a movement of change in the Middle East.

Check out the link below to learn more and to donate to the project. All profits from this project will go directly to the artists in the Middle East.

24TH ANNUAL HOUSTON ART CAR WEEKEND SEEKING ENTRIES

Our friend Jewelz Cody, who used to run the Burning Man Department of Mutant Vehicles (that’s the DMV to you and me) has been working on Houston’s famous Art Car weekend for years now, and we’re HUGE fans… she writes:

“Dear Art Car Enthusiasts,
The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art’s Art Car Weekend and its anchor event, the 24th Annual Houston Art Car Parade, occupy a unique place in the life of our city and beyond. Each spring, people of every age and from every walk of life create works of art using the car as a vehicle for self-expression. For three full days every May, these Art Cars and their artists are featured in special events that draw audiences of more than 300,000 from all over the world. By providing a venue for the community to value individual artistic expression, the Houston Art Car Parade brings people together to celebrate what we have in common: our cherished freedom of expression and our drive to use it.

This year’s celebration takes place May 20-22, 2011. In order to participate in the fun, complete and return the entry application no later than April 8. Completed entry forms are not juried, but are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Entry applications must be received or postmarked by April 8, 2011. SUPPORT THE COLLABORATION & CROSS-POLLINATION PROJECT

Collaboration & Cross-pollination is a seed project aimed to foster the sharing of artwork & art-based information between regions. Spearheaded by the Regional Art Ambassador from Burning Flipside in Austin, Texas, this project aims to help artists share their visions while inspiring new creations.

Our initial goal is to bring artists like Charlie Smith and the Art of Such n’ Such as well as members of the Flaming Lotus Girls and the Gee-Gnome Project to come to Flipside 2011 and share their creations and skills. Based on funding, there will also be allowances to have Austin artists visit other regional art events in an effort to branch out and continue to grow.

Please help support intra-regional art migration and the dissemination of creative information. Thank you for your generosity – every dollar helps! Let’s cultivate the possibilities!

11:11 PERIDOT PORTAL

We’ve long been enjoying Harlan Emil’s vibrational sacred geometric sculptures out on playa. He’s got another one up his sleeve for 2011, and he could use your help getting it there. Harlan writes:

“The Portal installations have been on the Playa since 2004 starting with the 11:11 Diamond Portal and evolving to the 12:12 Emerald Portal, 1:11 Sapphire Portal and 2:22 Amethyst Portal. They utilize sacred geometry, color and sound to create an environment for the evolution of consciousness. This year the latest Peridot Portal being planned returns to the original location of 11:11.
