CALLING ALL TECHNO-GEEKS: PLAYA WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT – MAY 12

Are you an artist, camp and/or geek who will bring wireless/internet technology to the playa?

If you are planning a large-scale technological project, have an art project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity, or will be beaming any sort of frequencies from 900MHz to 5.8GHz into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited and strongly requested to participate in the fifth Playa Wireless Summit hosted by the Burning Man Technology Department.

This year’s summit will be held in San Francisco at the Internet Archive (but of course you can participate remotely — we’re geeks) at 7pm to 9pm on May 12, 2011.

PLEASE RSVP by emailing playatech (at) burningman (dot) com and include the following:
– your name
– name of your camp or project
– technology and frequency used, e.g. “controlling rolling spheres with Zigbee on 900 MHz”, “want Internet uplink for camp”, “RC plane on 2.4 GHz, frequency hopping”

We will add you to an email list and keep you posted on the details (e.g. address, dial-in number).

Thank you from the Burning Man Playa Tech Team.

BURNER-BUILT TINKOMATIC WEB APP AIDS IN SEARCHING FOR BURNING MAN STUFF

Written by a friendly Burner, this web application may help you with the process of sourcing stuff you need for Burning Man. Pretty cool. Skinny D (its author) writes:

“This is my yearly quick shout-out about a web app I developed that can help people get their gears and art parts in place and in time, and without depleting the planet:

TinkOMatic (tinkomatic.com) allows you to search multiple classifieds and auction sites at once, and save your searches until you find what you’re really looking for.

You can search craigslist, oodle, backpage, kijiji, and eBay all at once; and if you don’t find right away that elusive playa bike, parabolic antenna, or tent frame you need for your next project, you can just save your searches, and easily check whether anything new came up.

The app is completely free and has been featured on lifehacker, mashable, and techcrunch.

See you on the Playa!

Peace,
-Bob a.k.a. Skinny D.”

CALLING ALL MUSICIANS AND POTENTIAL GROUPIES

Carbon Buildup writes:

“The Burning Band will be performing and carousing on the playa again in 2011 for their 15th year. Would you like to add your musical voice and/or kinetic talent to the band? We’re always looking for talented, mediocre, and just plain obnoxious musicians to perform with us as we march, slouch, or are carried across the playa in search of fun gigs. Sometimes we play for parties. Sometimes we play for bars. Sometimes we play for weddings. And we often play in inappropriate surroundings. So why not? You don’t even have to dust off your horn – bring it as-is!

DRUMMERS! We are always looking for drummers that actually show up for gigs. Dancers, baton twirlers, bagpipers, strippers, flame eaters, sword spinners, and word spitters are also welcome to add to our visual dynamic And this year we’re hoping to feature a bassoonist. Anybody dare bring a bassoon to the playa? We’ll be camping with Snowflake Village this year, and space is available. Contact SINdy at flossyrabbit (at) earthlink (dot) net or Carmen at Barcardia (at) aol (dot) com for more info.”

BURNING FLIPSIDE – SAN GABRIEL, TX – MAY 26-30

http://www.burningflipside.com/about

Now in our 12th Year as Burning Flipside. This year we will have 2450 participants.

What is Flipside?

Burning Flipside is a Texas regional art and music festival inspired by Burning Man. It is a place for radical self expression and an experiment in temporary community building. It is a place of acceptance, inclusiveness, and respect. It is organized entirely by volunteers. The art and entertainment is created solely by participants. There are no spectators. There are no concession stands. No cash transactions are permitted at Flipside. Even bartering is discouraged. This is a sincere experiment in creating a gift economy. If you need something, ask for it. If you have it, gift it! This is a Leave No Trace event. There are no garbage cans. Participants pack out their garbage. Personal responsibility is key. It is a private event created entirely by volunteers.

The Theme for 2011 is “Bad Idea” (http://www.burningflipside.com/theme). All participants are required to read the survival guide (http://www.burningflipside.com/survival-guide) but more event information can be found below and in the Flipside Flame (http://www.burningflipside.com/flipside-flame).

Sound levels are a very important thing to know about for the whole community.
The Sound Policy (http://www.burningflipside.com/soundpolicy) is being updated for 2011, stay tuned. If you are planning on bringing any kind of amplified or loud noise making equipment, or know anyone who is, make sure to see this!

BURNING MAN 2010 PHOTO GALLERY BY STEVEN FRITZ

Steven is a member of Burning Man’s Documentation Team, and has attended Burning Man every year since 1999. Although he enjoys photography year-round, if the truth be told, the other 51 weeks are really just practice for that one week on the playa. He supports his hobby by working as a psychiatrist at a state hospital (fitting, isn’t it?).

Here’s Steven’s gallery from Burning Man 2010 … enjoy!
