{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Greetings everybody, and happy Spring!

In this edition of the JRS, we’re kicking off our submission process for the annual Burning Man Resource Listing (the artist formerly known as the JRS Resource Issue, for you longtime subscribers)… if you’ve got a business that caters to the interests of Burners in our community, and directly supports participant needs in getting to, surviving and thriving at Burning Man, see below for the link to our online form. Submissions are due by May 15th! No late submissions will be accepted.

We’ve got other bits and bobs in here too, and you can always find more great information piling up on the Burning Blog. We’ve got a small handful of posts about tips and tricks for Burning Man, which are great for both first-timers and vets:

Halcyon posted the first of his excellent videos about Burning Man Tips and Tricks (with more to come!): http://bit.ly/l8s8gC

The Hun shares how to build your own Burning Man shelter and air conditioning system, avoiding the costly expense (and environmental impact) of an RV: http://bit.ly/gAKlYf

Finally, on the sweeter side of things, first-time contributor Benjamin “Jets” Wilner writes about his powerful mid-winter trip to the Black Rock Desert: http://bit.ly/eafcQX

BURNING MAN RESOURCE LISTING: NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS

We revisit and take entries for the Burning Man Resource Listing once a year to support Burners in finding Burning Man related resources within our own community. This opportunity is announced only to JRS subscribers, with the aim of keeping it in the family.

To submit your business to be considered for inclusion in the list, fill out this form by May 15th:

http://bit.ly/jLznci

No submissions will be accepted after May 15th, and we only do this ONCE A YEAR. The listing will be published on the Burning Man website on June 1, to give time for playa orders; the link will be published to our community in the Jackrabbit Speaks.

Burning Man offers this as a resource for JRS subscribers to tell each other about playa-related goods and services. This is NOT the place to send your listing for your local Burner-owned massage practice, or other products only available at the local, walk-in level – unless those local resources are located in Northern Nevada and directly pertain to preparing for the event. And yes, we reserve the right to refuse listings based on these criteria.

BURNING MAN TECH TEAM SEEKS FRONT-END/LAMP DEVELOPER

Burning Man is seeking an individual to provide front-end development and LAMP stack development support for a variety of software projects. We have new development, ongoing maintenance, and software evaluation projects for numerous systems using several LAMP stack, open source and proprietary platforms. For these projects, you will perform system and software changes to support annually recurring and one-time updates to user facing components, perform new installs as part of software evaluation projects, and assist with the integration of software solutions into event production processes. In addition, you will perform supporting tasks such as participation in end-user testing, creation of developer and end-user documentation, training, and other tasks as necessary. This position requires some on playa support.

If this sounds like you and you are dedicated to Burning Man values, please visit:

GERLACH GENERAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT TO SELL WATER IN 2011

Sherry “Trixie” Carter, who runs the Gerlach Burning Man office (and lives in Gerlach yearround), wrote in to let us know that the Gerlach General Improvement District will be selling water to Burners again this year. Details to follow in a later edition.

BURNING WINDOW NEEDS YOUR BURNING MAN CONTENT

Jonathan writes:

BurningWindow.com is a virtual community building project created by Jonathan Edwards. It’s basically a window with a search engine, and no content of its own … and that’s where you come in. Jonathan wants to include YOUR Burning Man content in the Burning Window. You can submit links to your websites, etc. without joining anything or giving up any information.

Check it out, and add your links:

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS SOUTHEAST TORNADO VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

Clove writes:

“Many people have been asking how they can help our friends, family and neighbors in Alabama and Georgia with recovery efforts after the tornado devastation.

Being still so fresh after the storms, it is very likely the areas affected will not be letting those that are not residents into these areas, but we can start planning how we can help now and be ready to help when they are ready for outside volunteers.

We have created a Google group for information and planning efforts. Please join if you are interested in the many immeasurable ways that you can help. Also feel free to pass this along to those you may know that are not on the announce list, but would also love to help:

http://groups.google.com/group/se-bwb-volunteer-info

There will be many ways to help, including going to the affected areas to help remove rubble and rebuild, donate clothing, cleaning supplies, books, food and water, host those traveling in from out of state to gift their help, helping organize the effort by making phone calls and overnight stay arrangements, and also helping transport people from Atlanta to those affected areas. All help is appreciated, no matter how simple or minute you may think it is.

Please use the Google group for asking questions, making requests for help, offering services and any other planning needs. These next few weeks will be crucial information gathering time to see how we can best be utilized.”

YOUR ART HERE: SEARCH FOR THE CAFE PERFORMANCE STAGE BACKDROP ARTIST

Sleepless writes:

“It is time to clean off your paintbrushes, fire up your welding tools and dig out your idea caps for we are looking for submissions for the Center Camp Café’s Performance Stage Backdrop.

The stage itself is a fantastic venue for performers; amateur, professional and all sorts in between, to share their art with as diverse an audience as can be found anywhere in the world. The stage runs 24 hours a day 7 days of the event- and your art could frame the show.

The deadline for proposals is May 27th, 2011.

REVOLUTION CAMP INVITES YOU TO AN ONGOING CONVERSATION

D’Andre writes:

“The ‘Department of Public Words’ is calling all citizens, denizens and participants in our community! We need YOU to bring your vision of a better world to our dusty shores. Are you an activist, scientist, artist, or philosopher? Are you into socialism, communism, anarchy, nihilism or simple organisms? Do you feel you are raging against the machine in vain? Do issues like oppression, inequality, hyper-consumerism or globalization encourage you to seek others of a like mind? We are here to help project your voice, hear your words, and share your hopes.

Revolution Camp calls on your yearning for a better world away from our playa home to make it happen in our existence! Join us in our ‘big tent’ of acceptance for very special, moderated, yet uncensored and radical conversations, debates and approach to ideas. Bring your visionary mantras, yet remain open to others as we burners learn others opinions, values and ideas.

No dogmatic rhetoric, just open, fluid conversation and debate about the taboos of the default world. These forums will be held by a group of burners in various topics that bring default world street credibility to the playa. Using the 10 founding principals of Burning Man as our litmus test, explore with us our personal revolutions, epiphanies, and get some illumination from your fellow citizens of our beloved Black Rock City.

Revolution Camp is broadly revolutionary, with revolutionary intent. Our diversity has its nexus the observation by Marx: ‘philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.’

Contact us at Burningempire2003@yahoo.com, for more information on leading, participating and hosting discussions.”

NATE IS GETTING MARRIED … AND YOU CAN HELP

Nate wants to ask you something (he may well be down on one knee right now, we don’t know):

“We are finally getting married! After 8 years of being together. We already have an awesome officiant and we have been collaborating some ideas for our wedding week. Thought this theme with Rites of Passage was a great time to get married! We are both dj’s as music is the glue that sticks us together. We are from Indiana and won’t have too many people coming for this union, yet we feel at ‘home’ with the BRC. Relying on the community to make this day/week the best possible, I have been compelled to post on the JRS.

We are looking for a few art cars for help in transportation. They need to be suitable for carrying separately to our destination on the playa both the bride and the groom individually. Further, we are also needing another art car to take us from said location to another on the playa for a ‘reception’. From the ‘reception’ we would also like an art car to take us back to our ‘honeymoon suite’. We would also be interested in volunteers who would help facilitate our grand union in any way possible.

As we are dj’s – we would like our reception to have the two of us spinning records together — we currently own nearly 10,000 vinyl records, the groom has spun since 1989 and the bride since 2000, and have played/organized many events. To get an idea of our ‘sound’ – you could download our 2-cd pack “Pick Up” + “Move On” — So – we are looking for a sound camp that will allow us the opportunity to spin together as the first thing we do as a married couple. We would also entertain the idea of having two separate sound camps pre-wedding — one for the groom to spin at and one for the bride to spin at. This would give the whole ‘Rite of Passage’ theme a good exercise. Then for the two of us to be united at the ‘wedding’ then after the wedding to spin at the ‘reception’ together would be GREAT. We would entertain any time frame as we don’t plan on sleeping too much.

If you are at all interested, e-mail me back at natethenatural@gmail.com”

About the project:
Previously exhibited at the Burning Man event in 2010, Cusolito’s ‘Blooms’ (20 foot high metal flower sculptures) create a ‘scale-reversal’ environment, in which visitors are obliged to take notice of the detail and beauty of a usually small wonder of nature. The Blooms sprout up triumphantly amidst the bustle of this urban landscape, making a stand for public art that belongs to all.

“The Black Rock Arts Foundation has flourished amidst the Bay Area’s highly concentrated population of artists, activists, volunteers and other doers and has the aspiration of contributing a lasting, positive impact on the Bay Area’s cultural history,” said Executive Director Tomas McCabe. “As part of this longer-term vision, we see the Mid-Market area as an ideal location for public art.”

In addition to debuting Cusolito’s installations, Art in Storefronts, now in its second year, returns to Central Market with six storefront installations and five murals. The latest in The ARTery Project’s efforts to revitalize a once-vibrant commercial corridor, the project temporarily places original art installations by San Francisco artists in vacant and under-used storefront windows and exterior walls.

ITP CAMP 2011 – SUMMER CAMP FOR GROWN-UPS!

While not affiliated, this post sent looked to us like it would be up your average Burner’s alley, and as an educational opportunity we thought you’d like to know about it. Pretty neat. Kate writes:

“Want to spend a month learning to make things blink, pulse, and communicate? Are you interested in sustainable energy, emerging materials, or algorithmic magic?

NY Mag called ITP the “Alice in Wonderland” of graduate schools, but in case you can’t go down the rabbit hole for 2 years, here’s a way to pop in for a while… For the entire month of June we are letting people come play, invent, make stuff, conference, unconference, connect with new people, learn how to make a phone app, a pop-up book, a monkey dance. We are looking for people who are serious about playing – Mad Hatters welcome!

You will have the time to learn new skills—programs, devices—and engage in conversations with peers and gurus about the latest trends in many areas of technology…from phone apps and sculpture to social software and entrepreneurship. The format will be structured enough for you to get something done yet unstructured enough that you can participate in making it what you want it to be (un-conference style). ITP faculty and staff will be there to make sure everyone gets the guidance and support they need. Space is limited to ensure a robust and productive experience.

For all the ITP Camp details, including the schedule and information on the various sessions planned so far, please visit: http://itp.nyu.edu/camp2011

Burners get a special 10% discount. Use promotion code “900” when you register.

Hope to see you there!”
