{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

This week, the first contingent of Burning Man’s Department of Public Works (DPW) — the fine people who build the infrastructure of Black Rock City — are heading off to Gerlach to live for the next several months, readying things for all of us to come and plunk a whole lotta content down in the Black Rock Desert. And may we just say: All hail the DPW!

We’ve got a bunch of good stuff for you this week, including the 2011 Black Rock City Map, Larry Harvey talking at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club, information about counterfeit tickets, MOOPing tips, and opportunities to support some pretty cool projects that are coming to the playa. Oh and a unicorn stampede. Very important, the unicorn stampede.

So, as we’ve forewarned, we’re going to be blasting your inbox with oodles of important preparation information, tip and tricks, starting next week … the first one out of the gate is going to be all about how to do the Burn in the greenest way possible. And of course doing so is a conscious effort that starts with your planning process, but we’ll get to that in due time.

And as you may recall from last time, all the tickets at the $320 level have been sold, and a limited number of $360 tickets are left … and since we’re not selling tickets at the Gate or at Walk-In Ticket Outlets, you (and yourn) have to get your tickets online at http://tickets.burningman.com … showing up at the Gate without a ticket? Really. Really. Bad idea.

The Man burns in 50 days, which is a nice round number that should strike excitement (or is that panic?) into your heart. Onward!

2011 BLACK ROCK CITY PLAN

The City Plan for Black Rock City 2011 is now live on the Burning Man website. It’s the same ol’ city you’ve come to know and love, but it’s got some cool new features this time around … like 16 new streets, making your travel around the outer edges of the city easier (cuz MAN, those blocks are long, right?). Here you go:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/11_maps/

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

BE CAREFUL OF COUNTERFEIT TICKETS

We’ve heard tell of some counterfeit Burning Man tickets circulating around the Los Angeles area … and this makes us wonder if there may be yet other nefarious characters out there with the same bright idea (which? it isn’t). So if you’re going to buy a ticket from a third party, make sure you know how to do so more safely, and how to identify a counterfeit. We’ve made it easy for you with this handy page of information:

http://tickets.burningman.com/#buysell

EPLAYA RENOVATED

The ePlaya, Burning Man’s year-round bulletin board system, has been upgraded … now it’s more stable and more user friendly. Thanks to our awesome engineers and moderators for their help with making the upgrade happen!

The ePlaya is a great forum for talking with fellow burners also preparing for the event, from jaded long-timers (bless our hearts!) to starry eyed newcomers (theirs too!) and everyone in between. It’s a great place to search for collaborators, learn about participant projects, ask that crazy playa question that’s keeping you up at night, or find a group, camp, stage, new friends…lively and spirited and occasionally hilarious discussions abound, and it’s right there on burningman.com . Check it out:

D.A.’S PLAYA RESTORATION QUICK TIP OF THE WEEK #2: LINE SWEEPS

DA writes:

“Hey Gang! Keep Black Rock City beautiful! When cleaning up on the playa be sure to use the strength of numbers by forming a Line Sweep! Line sweeps are a quick and easy method of efficiently scanning and picking up MOOP (Matter Out of Place) over a given area of playa surface such as your camp, village, city block, art installation, etc. Simply gather your campmates, spread out arms width apart, and walk through your designated area, picking up all traces of MOOP.

http://moopmap.blogspot.com/2009/07/line-sweep-definition.html

Thanks for leaving no trace:) see you on the playa!

DUSTWORKS HEAVY EQUIPMENT TOOL LIBRARY NOW AVAILABLE

As our community grows, it’s becoming more and more apparent that in order to remain even remotely sustainable, we’ll all benefit from efforts in radical collaboration — people working with others to pool resources, share the load, and reduce our overall footprint. Here’s a group of Burners who have taken that idea to heart, and are offering some “buy in bulk” resources in the form of heavy machinery and generators. We like where this is going … check it out. Tucker writes:

“DustWorks Heavy Equipment Tool Library now available to do your heavy lifting!

Four hours into unloading your camp truck, you catch a glimpse of a forklift disappearing into the dust and think, “This would be a LOT easier with one of those!” Well now it can be! From heavy loading hysters to articulated booms, trenchers, augers, and reach forks, DustWorks wants to give you a helping hand. Whether it’s lifting that kegerator onto the 2nd story of your art car or putting the final touches on your castle in the sky, machines and operators are now available. DustWorks seeks to build sustainable economies of scale through a logistical model that empowers theme camps to undertake collectivized infrastructure projects. By sharing machine time, theme camps can reduce their overall carbon footprint and spread the costs over a wider network. Long story short: Micro camps now have access to the same equipment that mega-camps use, at a fraction of the cost!

Want to schedule an hour—or a day—with a scissor lift? Need to dig one post hole or 100? DustWorks can help. The first step to getting on the schedule and booking time with a machine is to fill out their survey. Here’s the link:http://www.dustworks.org/survey.html Please note: Due to large demand, biodiesel generators may no longer be available… but it never hurts to ask!”

RADICAL COLLABORATION: FEED THE ARTISTS OFFERING SHARED REFRIGERATION

Keith writes:

“Feed the Artists Presents:
An Experiment in Radical Collaboration: Shared Refrigeration!

With the ethos of radical collaboration on the forefront of our minds, we at Feed the Artists have decided to embark on a unique quest to help YOU offset the time, energy, labor, coordination, and $$ needed to keep things cold and fresh for the duration of your time on the playa, as well as to grow the ability for you to provide your camp with the freshest produce and perishables possible all the way into Burn Week.

For only $350 per pallet-sized space (4’x4’x8’), you will have the ability to:

— store your perishable items in a secured giant refrigerator truck with twice-daily access all through setup and burn week. You can either bring us your food on the playa, or make arrangements to have it delivered to the truck in Reno, and we will bring it out to the playa for you.*
— receive wholesale pricing and up to four deliveries of fresh produce and other perishable items to restock your camp during setup and burn week from, a local wholesaler located in Sparks, NV.
— mitigate the time, money, and waste generated from the copious quantities of bagged ice that we have historically relied on to keep our food fresh over such a long period of time
— Reduce the chances of foodborne illness in your camp due to unsafe food storage temperatures and cross-contamination from melting ice water

If you are interested in working with Feed the Artists on this unique opportunity to participate in a new form of radical collaboration on the playa, please email Melissa, FtA’s Maven of Mindful Feeding at: refrigeration (at) feedtheartists (dot) net .

There are limited spaces available, so let us know asap if you’re interested! Obviously, your ultimate interest may be determined by where we are placed on the playa, relative to where you are placed, but for planning purposes, we want to know who and how many are interested now, and then we will finalize everything once placement locations are announced.

*We are also happy to facilitate communication between your chef/food planner and our local produce contacts so that you can order quantities ahead of time and have your food already loaded onto our truck and brought out to the playa for you. Our wholesaler will cross dock pallets from other distributors as well as offer you their entire product listing to work with.

Much Love,
Colonel Angus”

SIGN UP TO BE A TEMPLE GUARDIAN

Elizabeth writes:

“Greetings!

Every year since 2002, a group of quiet but helpful Burners known as the Temple Guardians have watched over the Burning Man temple at night, helping to ground the space and assist others in need.

As a Temple Guardian, you volunteer for one or more three-hour shifts. The shifts run overnight from 6pm until 6am, Monday through early Sunday morning. During your shift, your job is to hang back, help ground the Temple space, and provide assistance to those in need.

We use a ‘small pushes from great distances’ approach to help keep the Temple a serene space. We are not rule-makers, and we are not enforcers. Rather, we wait in the wings and watch, acting skillfully on behalf of the Temple and its visitors.

Our group is about 250 people total, and we often create some playa collectibles, like the bandanna that we produce collaboratively every year. But even more valuable than any physical items is the time you will spend at the temple.

Temple Guardians from prior years have reported miraculous occurrences during their shifts. One couple even met during their Guardian shift and later married! It’s really an amazing experience. It is truly a special role and a fine way to participate in Burning Man.

If you are interested in being a Temple Guardian, please email me at dhammaseeker (at) gmail (dot) com.

Many thanks and much love — looking forward to seeing you on the playa this year.

Temple Guardian Volunteer Coordinator

P.S.: Please feel free to repost this to any of your email lists or friends.”

JELLYFISH: UNDULATE WITH US!

Ann writes:

“Billion Jelly Bloom is a Burning Man art project that undulates + articulates a luminous jellyfish bloom through the night playa. Our mobile performance jellyfish sculptures attract + invoke spontaneous human-jelly playa encounters.

We will have 25 beautiful jellies for each performance. If you would like to perform with us for an evening, meet us at Center Camp (12:00 & Esplanade) at 10pm on Tues/Thurs/Fri. From there we will float & sway and bring wonder to the night playa inhabitants. No jellyfish experience required.

A ‘Yes’ RSVP will get you a spot on our list which give you priority to carry a jelly for that evening’s performance. Join us for a short while or all night long. Performers will rotate throughout the night, so even when more than 25 show up, you will certainly get a turn! https://www.facebook.com/BillionJellyBloom?sk=events

Please ‘like’ us on Facebook and help spread the word! And silver stickers with our logo on them are yours for the taking if you email our Human-Jelly Relations Coordinator at annlarie (at) billionjellybloom (dot) org

UNICORN STAMPEDE

Oh. Yes. Polly writes:

“Unicorns- that’s right, the mythical creature that Burners love to hate. This year we OWN Wednesday. Prepare to be Unicornified.

We will be taking our unbridled joy and annoyingly perky enthusiasm across the playa, galloping around making a nuisance of ourselves, stampeding through people’s camps spreading our intolerably positive energy throughout the festival. We bring magick and innocence to the playa and we fart butterflies and poop rainbows.

We will start at THE MAN at 7PM on WEDNESDAY, and then stampede around who knows where as the sun sets. We will provide horns to those who are horn deficient (we have 4000 horns!!!)

We will be ending up at the official Stampede afterparty ‘Wobble in the Woods, The Unicorn Rampage’ at the Walkabout woods where we combine forces with CHARLIE the Candy Mountain Art Car. Watch out for your kidneys!

We really can’t wait to meet you! Squeeeee!

VIDEO COAT COMING TO BURNING MAN

Pretty nifty. David writes:

“David Forbes has created a video coat – a 60” diagonal measure, LED color television that he wears. The LEDs cover him thoroughly from shoulders to knees – even on the sleeves of the coat. The coat plays a video from an iPod.

http://www.cathodecorner.com/videocoat/

Look for it on the playa.

If you have any colorful, abstract video source material that you’d like to see played on this device, please send him a message via the above URL.”

HELP THE BURNING FLIPSIDE CORE PROJECT GET OUT OF TEXAS

Pat Wheaton writes:

“In Austin, Texas, the Burning Flipside community has come together to create a piece for the inaugural CORE Project:. http://www.burningman.com/installations/11_art_core.html

Our contribution is a stylized Ouroboros, the ancient symbol representing continual re-creation, the eternal return, and other things perceived as cycles that begin anew as soon as they end. This is represented by the snake eating its own tail, or creating itself out of itself.

We have an amazing crew of sexy rockstars essentially working non-stop in the relentless 100+ degree heat of Central Texas. We are proud of what we’re bringing, and would love for you to check in at http://www.flipsidecoreproject.com – while you’re there, head over to our Kickstarter page and check out the video – it’s 4:04 of time you will be glad you gave.

SASKATCHEWAN CIRCLE OF REGIONAL EFFIGIES (S.C.O.R.E.) PROJECT NEEDS YOU!

Marie writes:

“Yes! There are Burners in Saskatchewan! And they are busy working on “Burning Sheaf”, Saskatchewan’s contribution to the Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) project. If you are heading to the playa from our massive trapezoidal province, we can sure use your help building our 20 foot wheat sheaf in Saskatoon.

You heard me, it’ll be 20 feet tall! Just like the other 22 regional sculptures that will be playing ring-a-round-a-rosie around the Man! And they will all be burned on Sept 1st (weather permitting). This will be Saskatchewan’s first ever regional project so we need you to reach within yourself and pull out that fierce bit of pride that most reserve for Roughrider football games. It’s time to S.C.O.R.E.!

Check out our website at www.skeffigy.ca for info about our upcoming work bees, construction days, and other awesome events just like these:

July 18th – Worker Bee Part 2! – Hap & Adrian’s house, 812-20th St. W., Saskatoon, SK (6–10 PM)
Aug 11th – Pimp Your Bike Party! – Free Flow Dance Studio (side yard), 224 – 25th St. W., Saskatoon, SK (6:30 – 9:30 PM)

However, if you are like several Sask burners who are not from Toontown, you can still participate! We can use your help reconstructing Burning Sheaf on the playa and assisting with Fire Perimeter while it burns to the ground. AND just so you know… we also have a Paypal link on our www.skeffigy.ca website if you’d like to donate. We need funds to make all the awesomeness come together.

Lastly, we know that Saskatchewan is one big sparsely-populated conservative province. But don’t worry, you are not alone. Find other Sask Burners like you on our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2463926706?ap=1). We are a small but mighty group who would love to meet you!”
