**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Greetings and welcome to the onset of May, that wonderful time of year when we once again turn on our vehicle’s air conditioning and are rewarded with a face full of playa dust! Sure is a great way to get blasted with memories … but hopefully you weren’t wearing a nice suit.
This last weekend, the DPW had its first managers meeting of the year. A grand total of 32 DPW managers met up at the Burning Man Ranch out in the Black Rock Desert to conspire to build yet another Black Rock City in which the magic will happen. Somewhere in there, the realization hit ’em — Burning Man is appearing on the horizon.
Speaking of which, today’s the last day to pre-register your theme camp for placement (it’s all first-come first-served after this), and the deadline for submitting your registration is 12 noon PST. But we’re gathering you’re on top of this already, right? Right.
We’ve got a nice smattering of offerings for you here today, including an invitation to submit a design (or more) to be considered for inclusion amongst our official stickers for 2013 … always a perennial favorite. And it’s a good indicator that Burning Man is indeed around the corner.
Can you feel it yet? Give it a minute … you will.
The Man burns in 123 days!

U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE DENIES PERSHING COUNTY ATTEMPT TO BLOCK BURNING MAN LAWSUIT
U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones issued an order Friday denying Pershing County’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Black Rock City, LLC challenging the County’s unconstitutional festival permitting process.
Burning Man organizers sued Pershing County in August 2012 after the County breached a series of agreements it had previously entered into with Black Rock City, LLC, and enacted an unconstitutional ordinance that singles out the Burning Man event.

BRUNO’S IS FOR SALE
If you’ve traveled through Gerlach on your way to Burning Man (which the great majority of you do), you’ve passed by Bruno’s Country Club, or gassed up at the gas station there. Well, Bruno is selling it all off. It could be YOURS if you wanna pony up. Here’s the news in the Reno Gazette-Journal:

BURNING MAN IN BUTANE-PROPANE NEWS
The April 2013 issue of Butane-Propane News (dubbed “The New York Times of the LPG industry”) has a great article by John Needham about flame effects artist Eric Smith, Burning Man Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) Manager DaveX, and this little shindig out in the desert called Burning Man. You might have heard of it?

BRAF GRANTEE “FLOAT” PROJECT BUILDS COMMUNITY, TESTS AIR QUALITY IN BEIJING
The Black Rock Arts Foundation provided an art grant in 2012 to FLOAT, a participatory art/design project using air-quality-sensing kites in Beijing, China. FLOAT had two components; a workshop and a public installation. The workshops gathered local Beijing residents to make kites with an air-quality-sensing module, and the public installation was a group kite flight in parks throughout the city using these kites.
Check out this blog post and the great video documentary about the project:

STARLIGHT IN RETROSPECT
Remember these pretty things from 2012? Here’s a retrospective video montage about the Starlight Project. Seven large plywood stars were placed on the playa to map out the constellation Orion creating a sense of place and a “heaven on earth” effect.

STEPHEN COLBERT COMPARES CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO BURNING MAN
We got a chuckle out of this. While interviewing Bill Clinton, Stephen Colbert asks:
“How would you compare something like the Clinton Global Initiative to other big groups that get together, like Davos or TED Talks or something like that – or Burning Man? What is the difference between this and those other gatherings?”

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: BURNING MAN 2013 STICKER DESIGN PROJECT- ENTER BY JUNE 3
This is the official call for designs for the 2013 Burning Man stickers! Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. BURNER BEEKEEPERS, DONATE YOUR HONEY!
Smallfry writes:
“My name’s Smallfry, and I could use your help on a project. I’m building a bumblebee mutant vehicle to bring to the playa this year by the name of Beezus Christ Super Car. Born in the land of Dust and Honey, Beezus comes before you bringing sweet salvation! He will be equipped with a honey bar at the back where we will be serving honey to weary travelers. We’d like to have flights featuring honey from Burners all around the world! If you’re a beekeeper or know someone who is, we’d love to have a jar of yours to share with everyone! Drop us a line at beezuschristsupercar@gmail.com, and put ‘Beezus’ in the headline so we don’t miss it.
HUGS! Smallfry

THE GUARDIAN OF DAWN
We’d like to direct your attention to a particularly cool (or hot, rather) project for this year’s Burn. If you were on playa in 2012, you may have noticed a lack of spots to hang out around a warm fire in the cold wee hours. Well, luckily, The Iron Monkeys (hailing from Seattle) noticed too. And they’ll be bringing another one of their amazing fire gardens for us to enjoy: The Guardian of Dawn. With your help, of course.

GENERATORS: BAFFLING!
Bringing a generator can make your Burning Man experience a lot more luxurious … running a coffee maker, microwave, lights, sound system, heck — an ice machine! — all of these take electricity to run. Thing is, generators are usually LOUD and STINKY.
– Bring the quietest generator you can afford, and the smallest that will meet your actual needs. Larger generators are more difficult to transport, use more fuel and create more pollution.
– Don’t run your generator late at night or early in the morning.
– Place the generator as far from other camps as possible. Remember, as far from YOUR camp means closer to someone else’s.
– Cover your generator with a sound shield or baffle. Do NOT bury it to shield the noise. No matter how well it is filled afterwards, the hole leaves a tremendous gouge in the playa.
– Make sure people can’t trip over any power cords.
The ePlaya has a whole thread with ideas for baffling your generator:
