{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** First off, we’d like to take a moment to THANK YOU. Over 1,300 of you fine folks stepped up to support the creation of the Temple of Whollyness this year, helping the crew to SURPASS its fundraising goal! This is testament to the Temple truly being of, by and for the community. You guys rock, and the Temple crew tell us that they are sincerely humbled and incredibly grateful.
This is us, wiping a little tear off our cheek. (Shut up, the dust got in our eye.)
Onward into the fray! We’re psyched to announce our new YouTube channel, which features a host of videos about (or inspired by) Burning Man, including the history, art, culture, playa preparation tips, documentaries and more. It’s a pretty great collection to start, and it’ll get even BETTER once YOU start submitting your best stuff for consideration … we’re excited because we know this is going to be an ever-growing bucket of amazing.
In ticket news, TOMORROW is the last day to change your shipping method to Will Call if you would (or might) like to sell your tickets through the STEP system. Is that confusing? Yeah, we hear ya. It’s spelled out a bit more clearly below, so take a look.
Lastly, we know it gets a little overwhelming during art project fundraising season (that would be riiiiight aboooout now), and we appreciate your patience while the tide of fundraising requests rises … and we appreciate your support for these worthy projects, whether that’s by way of money, materials or volunteer hours. Again, you guys rock. Here’s a list of projects looking for funding, if you’re so inclined:

ANNOUNCING THE OFFICIAL BURNING MAN YOUTUBE CHANNEL!
We’re excited to announce the launch of Burning Man’s official YouTube channel … and YOU are invited to participate! Learn more:

NEED TO KEEP YOUR TICKET OPTIONS OPEN? DON’T FORGET ABOUT STEP!
Tickets begin shipping next week! In light of this, here’s a friendly reminder: Friday, May 31 (yes, that’s TOMORROW) is the last day to change your shipping method to Will Call. Why might you want to do this? Opting for Will Call as your delivery method retains the option of selling tickets via our Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP). So, if you might want to use STEP to sell a ticket but originally chose to have your tickets shipped to you, this is your last chance! Need more info? The nitty gritty details are here: http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php#step

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS (#2!): THE BURNING MAN RESOURCES LISTING
To help our community help itself and support the cottage industry that’s grown up around our little shindig in the desert, we will publish our Burning Man Resource Listing again this year. So, if you’re a Burner-owned or Burner-oriented business, and would like to offer your wares to the Burners everywhere, fill out this form by Wednesday June 26, 2013:
(NOTE: DO NOT SEND YOUR SUBMISSIONS TO THE JACKRABBIT … THEY WILL BE IGNORED. *ONLY* USE THE FORM ABOVE.)
We will create a webpage of all submissions (that don’t violate copyright, trademark or other laws) and publicize it to our community starting on July 1, 2013. Late submissions will not be considered for publication … no exceptions. We reserve the right NOT to publish anything we deem inappropriate. For more info about our policies regarding trademarks and other intellectual property, please see: http://www.burningman.com/press/trademarks.html
And remember … Burning Man is NOT anti-commerce. We’re against commodification, which is quite a different thing. We recognize that commerce makes the world go around, and we believe in the creativity and drive of small business owners. Those are the folks we seek to support here, in the face of mass market consumerism. Keepin’ it in the family. So, participating businesses … thank you for serving and supporting our community!

HELPFUL HINTS FROM BURNING MAN LOST AND FOUND
In 2013, thousands of items will be lost at BRC. Winds whisk away small tents, sleeping bags … YOUR stuff. Love your stuff – label it and likely get it back:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7icX4Pzs8nE (Preview) Mark your ID with your CURRENT address. At BRC, lock precious stuff in your vehicle, secure the key in a hide-a-key box, and carry a COPY of your health insurance information and ID (unless you get carded at bars).
Bring found items and lost bike information, and look for your lost stuff (including luggage from the airport) at Lost and Found, behind Playa Info, from 9:00 to 6:00 every day.
And of course, lock your bike!

WHAT’S BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS DOING IN OKLAHOMA?
A number of inquiries have come in to Burners Without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org) about disaster relief efforts in Oklahoma, and BWB Executive Director Carmen Mauk tells us that they’re currently watching, waiting and assessing. An overwhelming number of volunteers are flooding into the area right now, so many that they’re being turned away.
The value that BWB brings to the table in these situations is filling in the cracks and supporting the communities that get ignored … especially once the media frenzy of attention and support turns away from hard-hit areas and they’re left to fend for themselves. BWB is working with grassroots organizers on the ground in Oklahoma to keep apprised of where, when and how their (and subsequently YOUR) skills can be best utilized, and more information will be coming as soon as it’s available.
Keep an eye on their website, and/or sign up for their newsletter to stay in the loop:

LARRY WANTS ‘A TECH BURNING MAN’. (NO NO, NOT *THAT* LARRY.)
In his keynote speech at this week’s Google I/O developers conference, Google CEO (and long-time Burner) Larry Page suggested the world would benefit from a technology-specific Burning Man.
And, well, we couldn’t agree more. A lot of people have commented, “Well, that’s Maker Faire”, and that’s largely true. But we get his point that a temporary city along these lines would be a whole different animal.

FIREFLY OPENS STUDIOS TO BOSTON AREA COMMUNITY
We’d like to welcome a new Burning Blogger to our fold … introducing Iris Yee, who will be covering Buring Man culture out in the world, including transmissions from the Regional Network, and beyond! Her first post covers the Firefly Arts Collective …
“Earlier this month, Firefly Arts Collective – who organize the official New England Burning Man regional event Firefly – took part in Somerville Open Studios, one of the largest weekend-long open studio events in the United States.”

ONE SECOND EVERYDAY (AND SOME OF THOSE DAYS WERE AT BURNING MAN 2012)
Cesar Kuriyama has a (beyond) cool project going. He’s recording one second of his life, every day for the rest of his life. It’s so engrossing that we forgot we were watching for Burning Man footage, and it was a pleasant surprise.
“I recently posted the second year of this lifelong project (age 31), which included my first time at Burning Man. I was so completely blown away by the experience that I intend to return for the rest of my life.
The first year of that project is here:

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO YOUR VIRGIN BURNER SELF?
Looooove this project. Love it. Loooove it. Awkwürd (Editor’s Note: hella awesome playa name) writes:
“The Virgin Letters Project is coming back to the playa.
Write a letter to the virgin you were. What would you have liked to know? What you have said?
We are collecting letters online and at Regional Burns. These letters will be delivered on playa to this year’s virgins.

PLANT IT AND BURN IT PROJECT: OFFSETTING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF BURNING MAN
The kids over at PIBI write:
“Plant It & Burn It (PIBI) is seeking volunteers to join us in planting trees this Summer Solstice, Friday, June 21, 2013, to help offset the carbon footprint of Black Rock City. PIBI is a new event that we want to promote annually on the Summer Solstice with the cooperation and contributions of Burning Man participants throughout the world.
As members of the Burning Man community, we have first-hand knowledge of how many resources it takes to survive and thrive in the hostile environment of Black Rock City, and are increasingly sensitive to the fact that without the benefits of a petroleum-based society, producing Burning Man and the myriad projects that comprise the event would be nearly impossible. We are individually and collectively responsible for accelerating the process of global warming through our participation in Burning Man. PIBI is a way to address this impact.
In each regional location, volunteers will come together to acquire trees specific for their local area and plant them in solidarity with their fellow volunteers all over the world. We have chosen the Summer Solstice as the date for the event to commemorate the first Burning Man on Baker Beach in San Francisco in 1986. On average, one broad leaf tree will absorb somewhere around 1 ton of carbon dioxide during its full life-time, so in order to completely offset the impact of Black Rock City, we would need to plant one tree for each participant each year. We believe that by demonstrating leadership through this project, we can ultimately educate and inspire every participant to engage in this activity. Our goal in the first year is to plant 500 trees.
For more information please see our group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PlantItBurnIt
Then, if you’d like to volunteer, join the group and RSVP to this year’s event: https://www.facebook.com/events/506484606060308/ ”

JOIN THE BLACK ROCK BAKERY AND ICE CREAMERY!
Dr. Clive writes to us of deliciousness:
“Bakers! chefs! Kitchen managers! thermodynamicists! I am inviting you to join the 2013 edition of the famous BRC Bakery! The same bakery that you know and love from before: In previous years we have made wedding cakes, bengiets, 40 loaves of Challah in a single day, cookies and muffins and all sorts of stuff! All of this we gifted out to the denizens of the playa. And we also stuffed our face with it. So everyone won.
But this year, we will be back with a few new twists: We are going to operate an evening shift that will produce delicious, rich ice creams and sumptuous deserts hatched from the mind of demented genius Che Dave! I will be carting in another giant dewar of liquid nitrogen just for the fast formation of flavorful frosty phenomena.
I am the camp bossman, Dr.Clive, taking over for Isaac who is going to be running a bar next door. If you camped with the bakery or worked with us last year, I want you back sooo badly! All of you all were wonderful! If you are new to the bakery, I would love to have you as well! Come if you want to bake! If you want to build!
Email me to find out more… zeinin+brcbakes (at) gmail (dot) com …and become a fan on Facebook to spread the word! http://www.facebook.com/blackrockbakery ”

JOIN THE GOLDEN CAFE IN THE FRENCH QUARTER OF BLACK ROCK CITY
Lucifer (no relation) writes:
“Celebrating its 11th year on playa, the Golden Cafe returns as your home for live music, exotic cocktails, homemade infused liquors, and occasional culinary wonders. Do you have a talent with drinks or tinctures? Are you good at building, cooking, baking, decorating, or costuming? Are you a musician, dancer, or other form of artist? We have unexpected new experiences to create and share, and we need your help! If you are interested, please email lucifer (at) goldencafe (dot) org with details of how you would like to participate.

CASTING CALL – SEEKING BURNER TO BE FEATURED IN LANDMARK TV SERIES
Abbie writes:
“Part2 Pictures and HARPO studios are producing a groundbreaking, 7-part documentary series that will explore human belief and spirituality around the world. One episode will examine pilgrimages across multiple faiths and spiritual traditions. Part2 is attempting a more nuanced examination of spirituality and as such we are featuring Burning Man as part of this episode as a pilgrimage for the secular age. While it is certainly not the case that all burners are seeking a deeper spiritual or transcendental experience at Burning Man, it seems also fair to say that for many the spiritual draw of Black Rock City is as profound and relevant as that found in any church. No one who comes to Burning Man is told what or how to believe, nevertheless the community it creates is a testament to the connectedness and meaning-making we are all capable of.
Are you traveling to Black Rock City with a specific intention this year? We’d like to hear why Burning Man is so important to you at this point in your life. Perhaps you’re building a theme camp, maybe you’re honoring a lost loved one and are looking for a cathartic release or maybe you’re an artist for whom Burning Man is an outlet for your creativity and self-expression or perhaps you are simply seeking a more transcendental experience than your everyday life. Regardless of what your intention may be, we’re interested in speaking with people for whom Burning Man is more than just an amazing party in the desert but a deeper, more meaningful spiritual experience. We understand that Burning Man is important to you and we hope you will grant us the privilege of documenting your experiences there.
For further information, please see: http://abb097.wix.com/burningmancasting
For inquiries, please contact: Abbie Harper at abbie@part2pictures.com”

“TRUTH IS BEAUTY” – THE “BLISS DANCE” SCULPTOR IS BACK!
Sculptor Marco Cochrane, whose “Bliss Dance” still holds a warm place in our hearts (and a sweet location on Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay), returns with his second large-scale female figure, Truth is Beauty.
It’s going to be just as spectacular, and we can’t wait to see it out on the playa. Please help with their fundraising efforts if you can:
Care to learn more about Marco, his inspiration and his (amazing) process? Here’s a great interview with Marco on Ignite.me:

ROY TWO THOUSAND WANTS TO MAKE ANOTHER OF HIS *INCREDIBLE* FILMS
Few filmmakers can do what Roy Two Thousand does, crafting absolutely mind-blowing footage out of the myriad wonders of Black Rock City. Lucky for us, he’s looking to create another film … and he needs our help to make it happen. We all win in this one, folks. Check it out:

This is our very popular annual artist lecture series, where you get a sneak preview of some of the many notable art projects in progress right now for Burning Man 2013. You’ll hear from artists who are creating revolutionary works of art, often in radically collaborative ways. Some have been creating work for the inhospitable tabula rasa of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for many years and will be sharing war stories. This is also the perfect opportunity to learn how YOU can get involved and support these and other artists at the Burning Man event and year-round—as we increasingly seek to place interactive, collaborative and community-generating works of art in cities around the world!
Each speaker will have approximately 10 minutes, so please arrive on time. This event is free and part of the free Friday Nights at the de Young series.

Also arrive early at the de Young and enjoy Urbanauts, a wonderful artist collaboration between Sean Orlando and Rebar, hosted by the de Young and supported by the Black Rock Arts Foundation and the James Irvine Foundation.

If you can’t make it, look up Burning Man art projects at the link below and directly contact these and other artists/projects as you feel inspired. Get involved and help make the art you wish to see in the world!

OH, YOU ARE *NOT* COMING TO US WITH YOUR SUNDAY WATERMELON!
This quote is one of our favorite memories of Burning Man, when a campmate admonished a hippy coming into our camp with a dented, dusty melon. Now, gifting at Burning Man is part of the culture, and gifting delicious food is one of the great joys in life (in this Jackrabbit’s opinion). And we also know that the best laid plans of mice and Burners all too often, go awry.
When you’re shopping for your playa food, it’s easy to get wrapped up in fantasy of what you’ll prepare out there. But things (dust storms, sleep dep, bad mood, flat tires, etc.) happen, and you don’t end up cutting up that delicious watermelon (or pound of bacon, or paella, or cheese board, etc.). That dreamy thing that was clean and cold when you arrived might not be the pristine treat you anticipated it being, a week or more after arrival.
What to do with a melon that’s gone long in the tooth? Take it home and cut it up with a chainsaw, hit it with a mallet, compost it, whatever. The point is that you get it off playa, just like you took it there. And let this experience inform your shopping for next year … be mindful of what you’re bringing out with you.
You (highly) likely don’t need three full meals’ worth of food for each person in your camp, times the number of days you’ll be out there. Half the time you’ll be subsisting on a melted protein bar from the bottom of your bag for dinner, and another fraction of the time you’ll be fed by others. Be realistic, and spend the money you might be spending on extra fancy treats on more coconut water. Nobody ever turns down a can of coconut water, especially on Sunday.
