Google Visitor Experience Project

In 2018 Burning Man Project announced an opportunity for artists to create six significant artworks for a plaza at the Google Visitor Experience in the City of Mountain View. This public plaza is where Google’s new Gradient Canopy building is located, which opens in October 2023. Burning Man Project collaborated on the process of community engagement, and also supported the selection, creation and installation of the artworks, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote opportunities for artists to create art and share it with the world.

There were three separate Artist Calls, which opened on the following dates:

  • April 3 – $750,000 Anchor Artwork
  • May 1 – $250,000 Plaza Artworks (two separate were awarded)
  • June 1 – $100,000 Plaza Artworks (two separate grants were awarded)

The calls were open to artists, artist teams, community groups working with designers, architects, landscape architects, or place-keeping experts who were interested in creating an exterior art installation that would serve as an activation point for the Google Visitor Experience plaza site, for the Mountain View community and for the Google campus.
