JRS Volume #6; Issue #29

JRS/6:29/07.24.02

ADMIN ON AND OFF: SCROLL to the bottom, it’s all there.

Jack Rabbit Speaks: a weekly pinch of playa dust sprinkled on your head.

Calm, cleansing breaths at 31 days before Burning Man! The almost-a-month mark….a good time to really start your shopping list, your packing logistics, your “let’s meet in the park and practice erecting the shade structure” plans. Here at the office we’re feeling like you guys probably are: frantically getting everything ready to go in earnest, with beatific, faraway smiles on our faces.

And what this time? Well, Phoenix of the Playa sends a tip our way for PREVENTING PLAYA FOOT. Like all good science experiments, this one began not with a “EUREKA!” but with a “Wait a second… that’s funny….” Today also brings installment #2 of the LEAVE NO TRACE PLANNING TIPS to help you plan and pack. Then, the LOCKOUT TEAM SAYS HEY! and tries to inform and advise us all, perhaps hoping we’ll make their job obsolete? 😉 DA RAT SAYS THANKS for the great response, and CameraGirl and Pleasure Sean show us their FLAMBE LOUNGE PICTURES. Plus, some really really big news this week as we congratulate the founders of OBTAINIUM.NET on a darned brilliant idea: a website that matches that which is free and useful with those who are creative and needful! Black Rock City is *built* on obtainium – the borrowed, the swapped, the repurposed, the I-found-it-on-the-side-of-the-road-and-I-can’t-believe-someone-pitched-it goods that get recycled into wondrous new applications.

As for more ways to participate, you bet, we’ve got ’em…she may have burned, but her dragon heart is still beating and winging its way to the playa: find out how you can help REBUILD DRAKA THE DRAGON! And if you aren’t a fan yet, you will be when it’s all over: THE EXTRA ACTION MARCHING BAND NEEDS HELP (and you won’t be sorry.) Or maybe you are looking for a way to volunteer on the playa and keep a cool head? Look no further: GREETINGS FROM CAMP ARCTICA. Then, meet the sweetest photographer to ever pick up a camera – SUPERSNAIL WANTS YOU to join in some fun portraits on the playa! Add your QUOTES TO THE QUOTING, WHIRLED, or LEND A HAND AT THE BURNING MAN GEISHA HOUSE (maybe you’re a geisha and you don’t know it yet?), or CONTRIBUTE ART TO THE BURNING ART GALLERY. The folks of ESDR are planning a MEMORIAL FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL and seeking assistance, too. Don’t just sit there, participate!

As for events, once again the calendar is jam-packed. Next Tuesday, San Francisco gets the first peek at the Burning Man 2002 theme art at the DESERT ART PREVIEW. We hope you’ll come to this exciting event. DAN DAS MANN’S LAST STAND BENEFIT will bring a true “participatory art experience” into being. SEATTLE has a “GIFTING IT” SCREENING, plus the FLIGHT TO MARS FUNDRAISER…and there’s a RECOMPRESSION IN CALIFORNIA where North meets South, and a THUNDERDOME BENEFIT in the Bay Area.

Finally, another word from the Jack Rabbit’s administrative underbelly (where it’s soft and fuzzy, of course.) But don’t despair – there’s MORE JACK RABBIT SPEAKS coming at you in a special Weekend Edition…we’ll have more information about driving on the playa, the word on wind-powered vehicles, and some useful data about bringing your water to the playa. But first, read on!

BLACK ROCK CITY NEWS

**PREVENTING PLAYA FOOT**

Playa foot: that cracked, dry skin resulting from exposure to the alkali effects of playa dust. Causes painful cracking between toes, general dryness and discomfort, and sometimes severe crankiness & immobility in advanced stages.

The solution? Here’s what Phoenix of the Playa recommends:

“By Accident, but it works!

On a recent trip, it was acknowledged by a person I met on The Playa that I don’t often close bottle caps. I’m trying to change.

Last year on the way to Black Rock City, *somehow* a bottle of lotion got loose in a pack and totally soaked one wool sock before I even got to The Playa. It soaked some underwear & t shirts too, but only one sock!

‘After’ a minor case of Playa Foot, I began to wash & lather up my feet real good several times a day. One day, I put on the pair of socks w/ one lotion soaked one. *That foot* healed much much quicker. Noticeably so.

After that, I began to wash my feet several times a day, yeah go ahead, give yourself and others this pleasure and lotion them up real good. I made certain that by the time I put on my CLEAN socks, there was enough lotion on my feet to soak into the wool. If you don’t have a problem wearing wool, it holds moisture – on my feet – better then cotton, but cotton should work just fine.

I’m bringing extra lotion this year, many more pair of wool socks and more water for washing. If you can find me, & I feel like it, I’ll wash & massage your feet. Bring your own water. cheers & plur, p-ftp”

{AG note: a vinegar soak is also said to work wonders against the alkalai. ‘course I wouldn’t know any more about playa foot, because after my first brush with this condition, you wouldn’t see me on the playa in any shoes but my cowboy boots for more than a few moments at a time. Sandals, generally speaking, are not recommended – not by this girl, anyway. And when you think you have enough clean socks, go buy three more packs. Besides your own use, they make delightful gifts to those you meet who ran out three days ago.}

**LEAVE NO TRACE Planning Tips, installment #2**

More hot tips from the Earth Guardians (continued from last week’s JRS):

“How will you dispose of your gray water? An evaporation pond is a good solution- it keeps the playa unmuddy and free of human grunge. home.earthlink.net…gwater.html tells how to make one from 2×4’s and black plastic. Or if you’re in a small camp, with minimal dish and body-washing water, you might choose to pour your gray water through a sieve (better, a paint sieve or even pantyhose) then disperse it on your street. The melted ice from your cooler is great for use in showering, spray bottles, or squirt guns.

Don’t bring cheap trinkets for gifts or barter. Thousands of these ‘gifts’ end up as trash. And feather boas, or ANYTHING that sheds, is a no-no; the trash fence tells us so. Try giving a smile, a helping hand or a joke. Help a neighbor set up camp. You are the best gift.

Don’t dig holes in the playa. Small postholes (6 inches or less in diameter) used for structural support are the sole exception. For such a hole, use an auger or a posthole digger. (A shovel won’t work.) Save the soil, then when you refill the hole, water lightly and tamp a few inches at a time. Larger holes used in past years to sound-insulate generators, or for pools, soon slump or erode even when carefully backfilled.

Don’t Burn on the Unprotected Playa- Burning Man is all about burning; we’ve become the experts at LNT Burning. Burning directly on the alkaline playa BAKES the surface into a dark, hard brick-like material.

You can create your own burn on one of the community burn platforms along the Esplanade. After your burn, remove your fair share of cooled ashes and unburned residue, and haul it away when you leave. Don’t burn anything that is toxic- you (or your children) will regret it later! Carpets, cushioned furniture, PVC and other plastics release dioxins, formaldehyde, and other nasty stuff. Glass does not burn, it shatters. Please discourage anybody with a glass bottle from throwing it into a fire.

If you’re planning on doing serious burning, be sure to check out burningman.com…burn_scars.html

Promote LNT Neighborhoods. Be proud of your neighborhood, work together with your neighbors to keep your part of the city clean. Every year some camps get overwhelmed and need help. One principle of LNT is “be considerate of others,” which in our city includes helping neighbors to leave no trace. You enjoyed many of the activities at your neighbors’ camps, so consider giving back to them, look around and pitch in to help them stay clean. Carry a MOOP bag and water as you walk around your part of the city.”

**LOCKOUT TEAM SAYS HEY!**

Bonzai writes: I would like this opportunity to thank AirHead for his work on building the lost and found key display for BM2001. I believe this action saved many visitors from not thinking when it came to the security of their vehicle keys on the playa! Each year more and more people come to the playa and as a member of the Playa Info Lock Out Team… we keep meeting new people! Each of them embarased by some minor stupidity on their part…. It’s OK, we love you… but help us inform your neighbors and new members of Burning Man….. a few tips! Remember to bring extra keys to the playa! When I come each year I have over three sets out there! I don’t lock my vehicle… and often you can find my keys hanging in the ignition and they stay there all week! In six years.. I have yet to have my car stolen from the playa! Rental cars need to have key codes when you pick them up…. and to be even more safe… get a spare key made if you can! Reno is a long trip from the playa.. just to get replacement keys!

**BIKES: DA RAT SAYS THANKS**

From Da Rat in Sparks…

“By actual count, 138 BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED 🙂 bikes will be in the hands of Burners this year, and I am pleased to have helped. (Really I am!) Meeting so many people from so many places has been awesome, and I am impressed with the eagerness and zest they all~ every one of them!~ has shown. The Man burns, even when no smoke is visible…

If anyone without a bike has any interest in 20” or racer (thin wheels) bikes, I still have about a dozen of each, but I am~ sadly~ totally out of cruiser bikes. They can reach me at ray_leslie(at)nvbell(dot)net.”

**OBTAINIUM.NET: A LITTLE LIKE EBAY…EXCEPT IT’S FREE, AND FOR MAKIN’ ART**

Got Stuff? Need Stuff? Working on a project and need resources?

Check out OBTAINIUM.NET!
obtainium.net

Log on and give away stuff you don’t need, find all the stuff you do need, and let others know where to get the stuff and services they need to bring their creative visions to life!

OBTAINIUM.NET is a great place to post what you need for your art, structures, furnishings, vehicles, robotics, and rocketry, as well as your sound, lighting and weird-ass kinetic sculpture projects. We want to hear about what, how, and where you got your gear for less, and all about the gear you’ve got to give away!

OBTAINIUM.NET is a free, easy -to-use web site that enables you to connect with other members of the community. In the obtainium.net forums, members post things that they have to give away, describe the projects they are working on and what they need to make them happen, and offer services to the community, describe and find events where things can be found.

A crappy economy shouldn’t be an impediment to the fulfillment of creative visions, and obtainium.net is a way for the gift economy to flourish in our community and beyond.

We hope you enjoy it!

**GREETINGS FROM CAMP ARCTICA**

Volunteering at the Igloo

Does the idea of working in and around freezing ice trucks in 110-degree heat appeal to your inner Eskimo? If so, you’ll be at home volunteering at Camp Arctica-where nearly 200 people come together to build and run the chillest spot on the Black Rock Desert. We’re looking for volunteers to work three-hour shifts at: 9am, 12noon, 3pm and 6pm throughout the entire event. You’ll keep the life force flowing to hot and dusty Black Rock citizens while helping a range of local Gerlach-area charities and community groups at the same time. If interested please contact ice-volunteers(at)burningman(dot)com

Art, Lighting and Performance

In keeping with this year’s Floating World theme, Camp Arctica will be transformed into an Underwater Ice Cave. Inside we’ll be enhancing our art, decor, and lighting ambiance to create a visually stunning experience for participants both day and night. The exterior glows, beckons, draws the curious. Through the arched tunnel/portal more intense colors peek out: something is going on in there… sounds, music, eerie chanting, dancers, ethereal forms, shifting light… you cannot help but go there. Inside it’s an arctic night, blue stars fill the dome, strange underwater creatures glowingly appear and disappear on the walls, aurora colors pulse on the inside surface of the dome. Sometimes there are silent, almost still figures, ghostly bodies… so nearly still in the place that you forget they are there, until one of them reaches and touches your shoulder as you pass. Sometimes there is pulsing trancelike rhythm, or chanting. If you are an artist, lighting technician, or all-around creative person, please get in touch with ice-arts(at)burningman(dot)com

Camp Arctica is also looking for ultra-chill musicians and performers to create an auditory experience for our Ice Cave. If your artistic expression is glacially ambient and atmospheric, and you’re interested in a cool venue, please contact our ice-performance(at)burningman(dot)com for more information.

Wish List

If you don’t have time to volunteering maybe you have some of the items we need to complete the igloo and create the Underwater Ice Cave. Please check out our Wish List at burningman.com…wishlist.html

Thanks and see you on the Playa,

Team Arctica, committed to cooling your beverages and helping the community one bag of ice at a time.

**SUPERSNAIL: CAPTURING THE FACES OF BURNING MAN – AND YOU CAN HELP!**

Supersnail writes:

“Supersnail Photo project is looking for help with a few specific photographs. To see photos from past years, look at supersnail.com. If you’re up for helping with any of the photos below, please email me at julian(at)supersnail(dot)com.

– On Thursday at 2pm we’re doing a photo shoot of about 10 to 20 people in formal wear. And then a photograph of the same people nude. Ideally you would keep all your formal clothes sealed ( no dust ) until the shoot.
– I’m looking for somebody who is very heavy, likes their body, and would like to pose nude. I want to promote fat acceptance at Burning Man and in the world.
– Know anybody with facial tattoos? If so, I’d lot to help document them.
– I plan to do a series of people, first in everyday dress and then in Burning Man garb.
– If you are a fire performer who performs in costume or makeup and who has time to work on a photo, please email me. I’m also looking to help document complex El Wire costumes. Here are some past night shots…

**QUOTES, QUOTES, QUOTES: THE QUOTING, WHIRLED**

Art project THE QUOTING, WHIRLED needs your help! We’re collecting quotes that will be programmed into the project. You and thousands of Burners will see your quotings whirled every night on the Playa. Visit TQW’s home on the web at sowbug.com/tqw/ and submit quotes, witticisms, expressions, love songs, word art, recipes — whatever you want!

**SEEKING NON SPECTATORS FOR BURNING MAN GEISHA HOUSE**

Seeking participants to create Burning Man’s first Geisha House – physically & conceptually. Looking for:

— creative people to help with decorating the inside & outside of a 34 ft. Slide-out RV, an attached 16 1/2 ft. long tunnel, and the surrounding area – i.e.: paintings, sculptures, installations, flags, tapestries, banners, signs, etc…
— people to help in concept & activities within the installation spaces, such as photo shoots, performance space, makeup and staging area for moving performance art, or something that you think of that works…
— any other installations, art and ideas that would complement and/or add to the Geisha house and area…
— and, of course, Geishas (female or male).

Here is a description of what will be created, as a starting point:

The interior walls of the tunnel will be lined with different colored crushed velvet, the floor will be padded red fake fur, and there will be a bunch of fur floor pillows (yellow, emerald green & burgundy fur). There will be aromatherapy with a daily scent. The installation portion of the RV (non living area) will have a fur floor; the couch, benches, and all seats will be covered in crushed velvet; and there will be a lot of fur floor pillows lying around. Lighting will be by candle and oil lamp, and there will be aromatherapy. If interested in participating & creating, contact: Michael – a K(n)ight of Indulgence (in NYC)

Email: parkadon(at)aol(dot)com

**THE BURNING ART GALLERY**

The Burning Art Gallery is a forested exhibit hall on the playa.

We invite those with art to burn to come and display on the forest floor. Those with paintings etc. to exhibit should contact me early. Once the trees are planted it will be very difficult to add paintings to the Gallery. Sculptures should be of natural materials. (No plastics or nasty toxics ) We intend to commence construction on August 23rd. We have a curator, structural designers, assembly people and pyrotechnitions in place. All placements must be pre-arranged.

Please tell your artist friends, we want those paintings etc. that need to burn. If necessary I will loop through the Bay Area on collection drives to get them up there on time. We have 4800 square feet of gallery, covering a 10,000 square foot area. We will also need volunteers for the burn. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get the art works to the playa the 23rd 24th and 25th. On Monday it will be too late to have optimum placement, and maybe too late to be placed at all.

Thank you for your inspirations and participation.

Ron

PS. This is not a Burningman sponsored project, the artist has paid all expenses. Contact me by E-mail: Balidreamers(at)earthlink(dot)net

***MEMORIAL FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL LOST**

The Emergency Service Department of the Rangers is conducting a memorial for our fallen comrades on playa this year and asks for help from our community. As a traditional element we are incorporating bagpipes and drums. There’s where we need help. We are looking for a few good Pipers and Drummers laddy who can ring out standard military dirge as well as favorites like Amazing Grace & Scotland the Brave. We are also seeking a Taps player as well as an Fire Engine or Maritime bell. Interested parties can contact me at Russ_Kane(at)burningman(dot)com

**DESERT ART PREVIEW**

BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION
ART PREVIEW
JULY 30TH
FORT MASON, SAN FRANCISCO

Burning Man’s Third annual Desert Art Preview features this year’s art theme, The ‘Floating World.’ The subtext is ‘Navigation,’ how we find our way through the world and what we seek in it. Founder Larry Harvey will introduce the theme and Bay Area representative artists will offer a sneak preview of their work as site-specific and interactive installations. Ladybee, Burning Man’s art curator, will also present. Our MC for this event will be the indescribable $teven Ra$pa.

This is a fantastic opportunity for those who might never attend Burning Man (due to work, school, family, or other limitations) to be able to experience the art and magic of the playa. The art of Burning Man is unique to the event, and it is a pleasure to bring it to Fort Mason to share with the world, burners and non-burners alike.

Artists using fire, water, light, sound and metal as creative mediums will discuss their works-in-progress. Speakers will include Paul Cezewski and Jenne Giles (LOTUS ISLAND -interactive sculpture); Tim Black (SHIP TO SHIP -light sculpture); Radiant Atmospheres, Mark Jones and Minx, (THE LEVIATHAN -light sculpture); Deidre de Franceaux (THE SIRENS -sound and figurative sculpture); Jeremy Lutes (THE LILLY POND -interactive light sculpture) and Simon Cheffins and Mateo (La CONTESSA -interactive theater and a mobile 16th Century galleon).

This event has drawn standing-room-only crowds in the past, and the organizers expect another sellout evening in 2002.

• Sponsored by Black Rock Arts Foundation and Burning Man,
• Hosted at Fort Mason at Cowell Theater on Tuesday, July 30th @ 7:00 PM (doors open @ 6:30, on-site parking available, all ages welcome)
• Tickets are available on a sliding cost between $15.00 – $20.00
