Jrs V07 I03

JRS VOLUME #7; ISSUE #3

JRS/7.3/09.27.02

There was no #2 in Vol 7 because AG is on crack.

Whoa! The greeters didn’t say anything about this camp. What’s it called? “Reality World”?

What a strange place…

…oh! Hi there burners! Yes, these here Jack Rabbits are back in action and trying to get on a regular schedule again. Like Maid Marian said last week, the return to earth is challenging for us, just like it is for you; decompressing from the playa can leave everyone in a tailspin, so if you’re feeling a little bit odd these days, don’t worry – you’re not alone!

But at least there are things you can do to ease the pressure. You can bring it home with you and give of yourself in your daily life – watch someone’s startled expression as you give them a gift, expecting nothing in return. Wear something ridiculous for no reason. Walk around singing to yourself. Make something. Better yet, connect with others who know exactly what you’re going through: find your local community at Regionals.

And for gosh sakes, if you’re anywhere near the Bay Area, go to the Santa Cruz Burning Man Film Festival this weekend at the Rio Theater! burningbeach.com/filmfestival. The North Bay folks will be Decompressing together too this Saturday… see “EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS” below for all the info on upcoming decompressions. I’ll be hitting the beach to warm myself by the fire not one but two nights this weekend here in SF (after I get home from the film festival, of course. 😉 )

And now, here be the news, fair burners. I must echo Marian’s sentiments in the last JRS – thanks to everyone who contributed, who built, who worked, who performed, who volunteered, who sweated, who hammered, and who gave. I offer personal thanks also to my campmates, friends, fellow staffers and volunteers, brand-new-acquaintances, and to the total strangers who, in the sweetest of moments, made gestures big and small to help keep the sanity for those of us who are at work while the rest of the city is at play. And finally, a big big thanks to those who are still there, closing in on the completion of the cleanup phase of Black Rock City’s year. I. Love. You. All. Dangit.

So, how was your burn?

**NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY**

Want to help keep the Black Rock Desert the pristine public resource that it deserves to be? Why not go out to the desert this weekend and work on some projects with fun BLM folks, the Jack Rabbit, folks from the Earth Guardians, some DPW folks and other desert user groups?

They will be gathering Friday night and Saturday morning one mile North off the 12-mile (not the Burning Man turnoff, but the next) entrance to the playa.

**THE RIGHT SIDE O’ THE LAW**

Did you have an encounter of any sort with officers of the law in 2002? We are always interested in feedback about your experiences with the men and women of law enforcement who help keep the peace in Black Rock City. Your stories and comments are welcomed at lawenforcement2002(at)burningman(dot)com.

**LOST AND FOUND**

So much goes missing every year that we can’t post it all in the JRS. But if you lost or found something, please notify lostandfound(at)burningman(dot)com and we will try to reunite.

There is some overlap here with the first posting, but a lot of the time stuff falls off bikes, out of backpacks, etc., and you stumble on it and think “Ahh! the playa has gifted me something!” We know. We’ve all been there.

Even if you think what you found has no real value – please email us just in case. We have received pleas from many participants whose object’s value was not discernable to the naked eye – a father’s last gift; a notebook with an email scribbled in it that might allow playa love to flourish in the real world. If you came home with something that’s not yours… the person who misses it may still be looking for it. We’d love to help you make that connection.

Lost/missing bikes have their own world – the first step into which is lostbike(at)burningman(dot)com or lostbikes(at)burningman(dot)com (the latter one now works, too.)

**LEONARDO PAINTS A PICTURE**

Art curator LadyBee’s article, The Outsider Art of Burning Man, is now live on the Leonardo Journal website, in their Burning Man section. In all, there are sixteen essays by Burning Man artists, with images and an introduction by Louis Brill. Soon four more artist’s essays will be added, and the whole thing will appear in a print version of Leonardo with a Burning Man cover sometime in 2003. Leonardo Gallery

Images are pouring in! You can’t have seen it ALL – relive what you loved, and check out what you may have missed, at images.burningman.com.

**POST PRODUCTION – BURNERS SEEKING ITEMS/INFO**

This participant is looking for a couple things:

“1. CENTER CAMP VIDEO — I am working with CameraGirl to put together some video montages for the center camp documentation project. If you have video, please contact me at starweaver_moonstorm(at)yahoo(dot)com for inclusion.

2. BLACK ROCK CITY POSTMARK — I’m looking for someone who actually had their act together enough to send themselves something with a BRC postmark who wouldn’t mind scanning it in for me. I would like to have it to included on my Center Camp video.

If you have either of these, please contact me. Thanks! Catherine Hicks [ catherine(at)hicks(dot)org]”

And this one from the Black Rock Lobster:

“I was wearing the “Black Rock Lobster” costume this year, and many folks snapped photos (with permission, of course). I wasn’t able to get any photos of my Lobster Suit in action to show my friends. Can anyone help? If you have a photo of the Lobsterman please e-mail it to me! Many thanks to all, in advance. I have searched the BM website images with no luck.”

IN MEMORIAM

ANTHONY R. TAYLOR

performanceart.net/burningman/mutti

From LA:

“The Southern California Burning Man community received quite a shock on return from Black Rock City this new year.

One of our brightest, Anthony R. Taylor / Lt. Mutti/Serendipity/ ART left us shortly after his return to Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, the fourth of September.

Ant’ny was a wondrous, inquisitive soul, loquacious and ever the performer. He smoothly navigated his way through numerous Los Angeles based groups, Masquatorium, Fabulous Monsters, Azteca/Easter Island, Mutaytor, Nuclear Family and many more. He touched and inspired so many of us with his wicked wit, charm and sophistication.

His passing serves to remind us how important it is to hold our loved ones close and maintain the strong ties of family and community which burning man has reminded us is not only possible, but essential.

We regret that we let him slip away, for only now do we know how loved he is.
We hope he understands that now.

Sincerely

jb”
