Burning Man 2003 will be held August 25th to September 1st in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada.

Tickets are Burning Man’s only source of revenue. Please purchase tickets at the highest price level you can afford. Purchasing higher priced tickets leaves the lower priced tickets available for those who need them most. Ticket allotments are divided by amounts and dates. All tickets go on sale January 27, 2003. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY ORDERS POSTMARKED BEFORE THIS DEADLINE SO PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANYTHING BEFORE THAT DATE!! (anything received before that date will be sent back to you – we don’t want to do that, so please be patient and follow directions!)

Payment for tickets may be made by US Money Order, International Money Order, or Cashier’s Check ONLY. Burning Man does not accept personal or business checks. Please remember to save the receipt for your money order or cashier’s check. You can use the receipt to find out if your order has been cashed. You will also want to have the receipt in the event that we are unable to fill your order.

The following information is for our international participants:

Payment for mail orders must be made in the form of a money order made out in US Dollars. We are not able to accept payment in international currency.

To make sure that our overseas participants receive their tickets, we are no longer mailing tickets to countries other than Canada. If you reside in a country other than Canada or the US, your ticket can be picked up at Will Call. You will be sent a receipt for your tickets. Bring this receipt as well as a photo ID to the Box Office to collect your tickets when you arrive at Black Rock City.

Canadian orders may include an additional $10 for shipping to have their tickets shipped via Global Priority Mail. If you would rather have your tickets mailed via regular mail, please clearly indicate and sign off on your ticket order that you understand Burning Man is NOT responsible for tickets lost in the mail. The third option is to have your tickets placed at Will call to be picked up when you arrive at Black Rock City.

We understand that your mail may take longer to reach us. We honor the postmark deadlines that we have set, no matter when your mail arrives.

**BURNING MAN 2003 THEME!!!**

BEYOND BELIEF

“What is any religion? A little ritual, a little superstition, and some magic? It’s not a strictly spiritual affair; it has psychological roles to fulfill. You might not want it to be a religion based on your own experience? but that’s like wanting to clean up your dreams”.

— Gary Snyder

Beyond belief, beyond the dogmas, creeds, and metaphysical ideas of religion, there exists immediate experience. It is from this primal world that living faith arises. The intention of Beyond Belief is to explore this mystery. In 2003 we will invite participants to create interactive rites, ritual processions, elaborate images, shrines, icons, and temples: visions of realities profoundly other and far greater than our conscious selves. Our theme will occupy that ambiguous territory that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the dazzlingly sublime. The human urge to make events, objects, actions and personalities sacred is protean. It can fix on and inhabit anyone or anything. This year our art theme will release this spirit in the Black Rock Desert.

**VOYEUR VIDEO: HOW CAN YOU HELP?**

Our case with Voyeur Video is still in process. Since 1997, Voyeur Video has filmed at Burning Man without permission, and we’re currently in progress with a court case to stop the sale of these unauthorized and undesired videos that we feel violate the privacy rights of our participants.

Right now, we’re trying to identify as many victims of these videographers as we can to gain their assistance with the suit. If you or anyone you know has heard that you are shown in these tapes (entitled “Rainbow Fire Festival 1997 – 2001” from Voyeur Video) or if you have any information about the case, please write to the Jackrabbit as soon as possible. **PREGNANT ON THE PLAYA: BORN UNDER A BURNT SIGN**

Participant Lola writes:
“I’d like to hear from women who have gone to Burning Man while pregnant. I’m interested to hear from women who have gone during early or late pregnancy and what their experiences were. What were the risks they considered? Were they uncomfortable? What precautions did they take? Would they do it again? Is it not a good idea at all? Myself and some other women I know may be getting pregnant in the coming year, and are trying to decide if going to Burning Man will be an option.

Women could send their responses to me at: wolfhound3(at)earthlink(dot)net

Thanks so much!”

**REDUCE, REUSE, EXHIBIT**

We’ve just heard of yet another something unique in the Bay Area: the local trash company’s Artist in Residence program. Says their website:

“The Artist-in-Residence Program at Sanitary Fill Company is an innovative program that inspires and educates people about recycling and resource conservation by providing local artists with access to materials, a work space, and other resources at our Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center.

Since 1990, artists have worked in a large, well-equipped studio next to our Transfer Station west of Highway 101 near 3-COM Park in San Francisco. The Transfer Station is located within a 44 acre property that includes several recycling facilities and the Public Disposal Area (also known as “the dump”).

Art is created from what would have been sent with the rest of San Francisco’s trash to landfills across the Bay or recycling plants across the nation.”

This sounds like a perfect Participant day job to us, so we had to share. For more information, visit:
www.norcalwaste.com/air_about_us.htm

The current Artist in Residence at SFC is a longtime member of the Burning Man community, Dana Albany. Among other involvements, Dana was a production assistant in creating “Helco” on the playa in 1996, and was involved with the creation of “Bone Tree” (1999), “Bone Arch” (1997), and “Body of Knowledge” (2000.) Now, in the January 7 edition of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Dana is featured in an article about Bay Area residents with unique jobs, entitled “Life’s Work”. Check it out at:

Go Dana!

**WISDOM FROM THE RANCH**

First in a series of year-end quotes and thoughts from 2002’s event, culled from the wisdom of Ginger Petunia, DPW Starlet. Ginger helped run the Burning Man Gerlach office from June until end of October 2002 and is the possessor of one of the sweetest dispositions you will ever have the good fortune to meet.

“First thing to remember is that some of the DPW rules are important. It is up to you to figure out which ones and heed those first. Heed the rest anyway, especially when nobody is looking, and definitely when somebody is.

Societies need rules that make no sense for individuals. For example, it makes no difference whether a single car drives on the left or on the right. But it makes all the difference when there are many cars.”
– Marvin Minsky

The DPW ranch is a dirty dusty harsh place to live. However, “Sleep, riches and health, to be truly enjoyed, must be interrupted,” said Jean Paul Richter.

More from the wise lips of Ginger Petunia in future issues of the JRS.

**SYNORGY 2002 REPORT FROM SALT LAKE CITY**

SynOrgy (Utah) 2002 Solstice Burn
by Aspen Moon

It seems that Utah burners just can’t get enough fire. 70+ burners from Salt Lake City and the surrounding area braved snow, ice, and temperatures in the 20s to finally watch our Effigy burn. Due to statewide burn bans earlier this summer, the burn part of the celebration had to be postponed. But on the winter solstice, we celebrated the longest night of the year with fire!

The event featured a surreal performance of Scot Jenerik and F-Space. Their unique style of music, which mixes unique percussion instruments, rhythm, noise, and fire was a highlight of the evening. It was so cold, Ethan played his guitar with gloves.

Burners were in full force, including four of Santa’s Fire Elves, donning flame throwers. In addition, members of Clive’s Lounge entertained participants with karaoke and the famous vinyl suction table. Fire play was abundant and we all managed to stay plenty warm despite the fact it was the first day of winter. As the group processed down the path illuminated by Burning Man luminaries, the fire elves torched the effigy and the scene exploded into jubilation and renewal as our Effigy, which was decorated by the Salt Lake City community, finally burned.
