What a week. We started it back on Orange alert, not an abstract concept here in New York, where my friends and I now carry potassium iodine in our wallets in case of a nuclear event. Over the past few days many of us have received word that a 23-year-old Seattleite died in Isreal on Sunday while trying to stop a bulldozer from knocking down a house. Whatever your politics, this is sad news. This morning, we woke up to the second day of a new war in which more people will be injured and killed. And yet tomorrow – almost too perfectly – we have the first day of spring.

We are a community that celebrates living fully, being engaged with the world. Last week we had a fantastic story about burners helping each other out, and another about some burners and non-burners helping each other see each other more clearly. This week, all we can say is there’s no time like the present to notice what’s going on around you and engage with it. As we all know, the world contains pain and death, sunlight and rebirth; sometimes just a few days apart.

Look at the tracks that form between the Man and the Temple of Atonement every day on the playa for any proof you need that Burning Man is not just a big party, but rather a celebration of the intensity with which life can be lived. We all spend months preparing to go out to the harsh, hot desert because of what we hope we will find there. But not for any one of us is it the only time all year that we sacrifice comfort for the sake of exploration.

There are 158 days until we make our annual trek to build, experience, and tear down Black Rock City – but every day is a day to participate.

RACHEL CORRIE, PARTICIPANT

By now most everyone has heard of Rachel Corrie, the young woman who was killed by a bulldozer in Israel this past weekend (here’s one of the many stories that has appeared about the incident: news.bbc.co.uk…2856433.stm). What you may not know is that Rachel was a Seattle-area Burning Man participant, most recently with Arson Island Resort.

A fund has been established to help her family with travel and funeral expenses. If you would like to donate, please see the information at Rachel.

There will be a memorial for Rachel this Friday, 3/21, at CHAC on Capitol Hill in Seattle starting at 8 pm. CHAC, the Capitol Hill Arts Cooperative, is at 1621 12th Avenue on Capitol Hill, one block east of the reservoir.

TOWN HALL MEETING SUNDAY, APRIL 6TH

Burning Man’s annual Town Hall Meeting is right around the corner.

Everyone is invited to this free event, where the folks that work year-round to make Burning Man happen will be trying to entice YOU to volunteer with THEM to make this year’s event a great experience for all. Meet wonderful people in your home town and start the participation before you get to Black Rock City – representatives from all volunteer teams will be present and thrilled to show you how. The Burning Man senior staff will be there to answer your burning questions, and barbeque and drinks will be provided. Bring a side dish to share if you like, or just show up with some good old-fashioned curiosity and we’ll take it from there!

Sunday 4/6 12-3pm
SomArts Gallery, 934 Brannan (at 8th Street)
San Francisco

ART CAR UNVEILING
NEW YORK
MARCH 21ST
5pm-9pm

Pianos Bar
219 Ludlow LES
no charge

Join us on Friday for “Lady Day” aka “Vernal Equinox” aka “Mary’s Date of Immaculate Conception” aka

“The Unveiling of the Heart-a-tac-lac Art Car Cadillac, cum religious relic, and the sacred heart of Black Rock City”

with a Bloody Mary Contest MC’ed by EditrixAbby, 1337 Circus Antics and much more.

The Heart-a-tac-a-lac will be unveiled March 21st, Lady Day, at Pianos Bar in the LES. Yes, our beloved cream colored Caddy, nicknamed the Heart-a-tac-a-lac for its reoccurring freeway stalls, is about to undergo the most important transformation of its car time, art car hood. On Lady Day the designs of the car will be displayed as well as a glimpse of the ravaged worshipers devout to this particular deity. Ultimate devotion is often expressed through the icon of the sacred heart. The image represents absolute love, not just to the worshiped, but worship of love itself. We invite you to take part in this ritual.

The theme of the evening is hearts and flames. Wear a heart on your sleeve, be a card in the suit of heart or come as your favorite catholic school girl. That means you Boys and Girls. Fella’s didn’t you ever want a plaid skirt and a white blouse? Bring homemade bloody mary mix! There will be a contest for best bloody mary, on this date, the date of Mary’s conception. The Heart-a-tac-a-lac is a community project therefore we are providing a way for everyone to contribute to the car. Witness the secret of the sacred heart for yourself.

Other goodies?!:

1337 fire and light performances; roaming trapeze and stilts
Glitz, our resident musical genius
Alex, and a group of un-named drummers
Val Val, with melodies for Lady Day
Fashions by Miss Halo 5
and of course… Catholic School Girls

Brought to you by 1337 fire and light…

See you there.
