In 135 days, I’ll find myself at home again among all of you. I find myself now wondering what will be different this time, given the year that we’re weathering together out here in the Default World. What will change? What will intensify?

What’s heartening is that we’re seeing unsurpassed enthusiasm in our office as volunteers, artists, theme camps, staffers, and participants make their playa plans. It seems that the darkness in the world hasn’t come close to putting out this fire, and in fact it’s made our connection to one another all the stronger and more necessary.

Here I sit, in a post-Town Hall glow, all riled up with the energy of new enthusiasm and returning volunteers, and I’m trying to imagine what it will be like to set foot on the empty playa this August as we begin to build the only city where I really know I’m home.

135 days just isn’t that many… I, for one, am awfully grateful of that.

Before we get started today, we’ d like to point out to everyone that your burning questions may always be sent to questions(at)burningman(dot)com – your source of infinite playa wisdom.

TOWN HALL MEETING RECAP

After reminding everyone else about the time change, yours truly decided to forget… so by the time I walked into the SOMARTS Gallery, the Town Hall was in full swing. An estimated 300 people passed a lovely Sunday perusing the many tables set up by the volunteer-seeking teams of Burning Man, and all reports indicate that the bountiful harvest of the day was a great crop of new volunteers! Outside, the barbecues were in full swing, potluck dishes were abundant, and everyone cheered when the DPW returned from a successful community-funded beer run.

Just getting a chance to wander among the tables and meet folks face to face can turn the most indecisive potential volunteer into an enthusiastic new team member, so Town Hall is always an exciting time that really kicks off the planning season for many groups – Daylight Savings Time be darned.

2002 CENTER CAMP CAFÉ: VISIT IT AGAIN FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

As we ramp up for BMAN2003 amid many world concerns, the fabulous Cafe Documentrix, Heather Gallagher (aka CameraGirl), offers the following distraction: the 2002 Cafe Island Documentation Project.

Every year, Heather and her merry band of photographers and videographers capture the process of building and cleaning up the Center Camp Cafe from beginning to end. This year, she’s started from the REAL beginning: our work pre-event in SF, on the Work Ranch, visiting artists, etc.

Interspersed among the fabulous photos are her “postcards” (referenced on the photo index pages as a BRC postmark), which contain more prose detail about her impressions of the Café’s work, the volunteers, the splendors of Black Rock City, etc. Some noteworthy images are from the (serendipitous) “Dancing up a Storm” belly dancing invasion Friday afternoon of the event, when a dust storm hit just as hundreds of swirling belly dancers filled the Cafe. (You, no doubt, will have your OWN favorites.)

Only as multitalented and tenacious a costumed freak as CameraGirl could possibly have pulled off this huge accomplishment. We think it’s FABULOUS — and hope you do too! (If you want to write to congratulate her (or comment, or ????), her email address is cameragirl(at)burningman(dot)com.

GEAR UP FOR THE PLAYA!

These random- access tips from Planttrees(at)aol(dot)com. Never too early to think about making BRC a better trip.

-Visit garage sales in the afternoon: when they’re closing, gear is cheap or free!
-Before leaving for the desert, grab cases of organic fruit at the close of any farmers’ market. No farmer wants to take any produce back to the farm at the end of the day.
-Don’t forget bike store dumpsters for inner-tubes (they’re better than bungees!)
-If you are looking for a specific item, search it on http://www.craigslist.org. Bookmark the results page; then you’ll see what new offers come up each day. (Editor’s note: Don’t forget http://www.obtainium.net.)
-Be nice to your motor as you ascend the summit. Bring empty 5 gal bottles. Fill at summit or in Reno for your washing and bathing needs.
-It’s good to check your vehicle’s fluids before climbing any pass. Prevent overheating by turning your heater on. No temp gauge? No problem – your feet will warn you if your car is getting too hot.

(Another pesky Editor’s Note: Do NOT wait until Gerlach to fill water bottles. There is no commercial water vendor, and the town’s citizens frown severely upon those that steal their precious resource – in the desert, water is gold. DO check out water sources in Reno – for more great water info, visit
burningman.com…water.html).

NO MOON IN 2003

No, this is not the result of budget cuts, nor our attempt to set the mood. But it turns out we will not have the bright full moon to light the playa this year. One of the emissaries of light from LiteBrite camp asked us to mention this early and often: plan to light yourself up this year! Carrying a flashlight and/or something glowy might help you set your own personal mood, or it might not… but it will *definitely* help other participants on bikes and art cars avoid plowing into you.

Going without light on a moon-free night is… well… lunacy!
(Note to self: must get BIKE LIGHT!)

POTTIE ADDRESS WRONG

In the pottie article for the Black Top Gazette [handed out at the Town Hall Meeting and available at some upcoming Regional Events], the subscribe-to address for the potty list was incorrectly listed as pottie_list_subscribe@burningman.com. The actual address is pottie-list-subscribe(at)burningman(dot)com. (Dashes, not underscores.)

If you wanted to get on the pottie list… now you know how.

YOU OUGHTA WRITE A BOOK

Annie Kayser writes:

“I have a request I’m hoping you can help me with. I would like to create a small book that is a collection of poems, stories, quotes, etc. from burners around the world combined with imagery of burning man. My intention is to distribute this little book as a gift at burning man this year. I was wondering if you could possibly put my request out to the burning man community in the jack rabbit speaks newsletter, so if anyone would like to contribute to my project my submitting a poem about burning man, or by just simply letting me know what burning man means to them, I would very very much appreciate it. They can reach my by emailing me at dragonflyannie(at)hotmail(dot)com.”

**<>/**<>/ **<>/**<>/ **<>/**<>/ **<>/**<>/ **

PICTURE SECTION

All kinds of… well, ok, four kinds of… emails came back last week, when we asked about participants whose picture requests had been fulfilled by the JRS. And while nobody has come forth to show us an actual picture, we did elicit a new round of requests. Read if you were on the giving or receiving end of a lens last year…and see how to reconnect.

1. Does anyone have a picture of The Pope (with the Cletus Teeth) from Burn Night? I know that four or five people took ’em, so the odds are only 1/5,000 or so. Email sheldoni(at)adopedealer(dot)com thanks.

2. Though not directly related to this request, I thought maybe you might want to include a link to my portraits from 2002. I tried to give cards to everyone I photographed. But I’m sure that many folks misplaced them as they wandered around. So if anyone remembers being photographed near 225 and Main Mast in front of a painted backdrop of a lighthouse (possibly dressed as a mermaid) or in front of some deep-sea fish, you can find these photos online at pbase.com…bman2002

Enjoy! John Cornicello johncornicello.com

3. [so close – could this be the people #2 is looking for!?!?!]

Hey you, who liked our singing/music playing on the Esplanade at near-sunset through dusk one day… who took photos and/or video…who maybe put those photos online, because we’ve heard rumors that photos have appeared online….

Please get in touch? The driftwood stage at 225 & Esplanade is what I’m talking about. Any photo URLs or leads appreciated, but particularly Passiflora singing with To-Ka-Ge, who was playing guitars, theremin, and electronics, very dreamy and far out stuff. People were sitting on log stumps, meditating on the sunset or staring out on the Playa. A lovely moment at Drift Catalyst and you shared it with us.

We’ve actually got that session recorded & being distributed now, so we would be more than happy to hook you up with the music! We would just love to see the pics.

Please email me if you’re out there. passiflora(at)corporatecollapse(dot)com.

And finally:
4. While I was at the 2002 BM I handed out 50 cards to people asking in return that they email me one picture that summarized their burn experience that year. A month later you very kindly posted a reminder to people to get in contact with me and follow up on their promise. A few people did, but I’ve still only got back nine of my original 50…

matazone.co.uk/Burning_Man_2002_photos.htm

So if you’re doing a little retrospective piece please tell people that I’m still looking to get their images and I still want one photo from 50 different people at the burn in 2002 to complete my page.

Thanks! Mata

MURAL PAINTING IN SEATTLE

JRSV7-22 invited Seattle burners to band together again to restore a local artwork at risk of decimation by taggers. Wally Glenn reports with another success story for the cockles of your heart:

“The weather was a bit soggy, the Fremont Arts Council had a rummage sale happening which used up potential volunteers, a big party happened the night before and it’s the weekend for the Vancouver Burning Man recompression, but despite all of these distractions, volunteers showed up and helped fix two huge tags that were painted on the Mural about 3 weeks ago.

About 15 volunteers from FAWN, FAC and the Seattle Burning Man community showed up and one person who had other plans dropped off treats anonymously to feed a hungry crew before we even arrived. We spent 5 hours using steel wool to knock down the tags, match the paint color, buy it, then paint out a section. The results are really amazing! One very bad tag is half painted out and the other one is prepped enough so that when the color matching is completed, we can paint out the remainder of the damage and make it disappear. The crew was quite amazed at how well the project progressed. One more round of painting and the four big tags that were painted on the Bridge Street Mural will be completely painted over with a new coat of vibrant paint that will really help the Mural stand out.

We now have half of the paint for the Mural matched, so if taggers hit sections we have already painted, we can actually fix the damage in a reasonable amount of time without having to first remove the tag, match the paint, buy it, then paint over the remnants of the tagging.

We are making really great progress, but this Mural is over 600 feet long and has accumulated lots of damage the last few months. But in the next month or so, the current damage will be gone.

A very special thanks goes out to Daly’s Paints. The more they learn what we are doing, the more they step up and help out the project. They are helping us custom match paints, recording the paint we buy so that if we need to order more in the future, they will have a complete record. Daly’s has a long history of being a responsible business in the Fremont Community. They donate paints for the Solstice Parade Floats and they helped supply the original paint for the Mural. best of all, their paints really cover well which makes this job so much easier. Thank you Daly’s.

For more information on what we are doing, please check out:

Have a Lovely Day

Wally Glenn aka Pyro Boy”

Take that, taggers.

GURU ROAD RESTORATION PROJECT

From Metric, firmly ensconced in Northern Nevada:

“I am helping put together an effort to restore Doobie Lane (aka Doobie Avenue/Guru Road, it is an art installation piece adjacent the first desert entrance north of Gerlach). There are several small structures in disrepair and some MOOP to remove. It looks like we’ll be doing it over the Easter weekend, along with regular ranch related projects. DeWayne Williams II, son of the original artist ‘Doobie’ Williams, will be overseeing the project and perhaps adding to it. One thing which you city-dwelling folks can help with is gathering broken televisions for one of the installations. I also must have some idea of who is interested in or planning to come work that weekend– Thanks -Metric”

Check in with Metric about the details before you head to Nevada:

MORE INFO ON THE MAY 2nd EVENT
AND A CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
from Zach Coffin, who did the Rock sculpture at Burning Man 2000 and the Rock Spinner in 2001:

It’s springtime and Atlanta is getting RIPE:

FRIDAY MAY 2ND, the Ripe Atlanta group is planning an arts fundraiser event, called RIPE, to benefit BRAF and the Metropolitan Public Arts Coalition. Taking place at the City View Sculpture Park in West End, it will be an evening of art, fire sculpture, performance and much, much more.

We will be drawing on the inspiration of Burning Man and need YOUR help.

We are looking for burners and artists to create visual, auditory, tactile (olfactory???) environments as part of a transformation of exterior space and a rethinking of how art can be experienced. Come to Atlanta, bring your Burning Man knowledge, spirit and enthusiasm. We are looking for performers to express their vision. We are looking for Extroverts to Extrovert. We are looking for Introverts to Extrovert.

We are going to be radically inclusive, present us with your idea and we will find a way to include your vision. We encourage group work and inspiration. The event will be outdoor at a wonderful site overlooking the skyline of downtown Atlanta (cityviewsculpture.com).

NO VENDING: This is not a craft fair. Call 404-752- 6410 and leave message or email info(at)ripeatlanta(dot)com. More info at ripeatlanta.com
