121 days, and another broadcast from Where the Action Is: how many ways can a Jack Rabbit say “excitement”? When there’s never a dull moment, one fears growing dull at describing how things are always downright busy-in-the-best-possible-way. You’ll see below that there are plenty of ways to get involved, as usual, and much fun stuff in progress.

This issue, not only can you read about what really happened when Burning Man met (retired members of) the Air Force, but we’ve got a fun trivia-gathering mission for all burners! We’ve sent this very call for help out to the staff list, but so far only a handful of people have replied (they must all be busy gearing up operations for the playa.) We really need *your* help gathering fun facts about the event. In other words, we need a trivia infusion, and like my buddy Junior might say, “We aims to get us one!”

Ado? None further. Commence perusal!

SFWEEKLY ON “BURNING MAN MEETS THE AIR FORCE”

We heard from a few readers wondering what the heck was going on when Coyote Nose mentioned that Burning Man did a little presentation for an Air Force association a few weeks back. This little tidbit by Joyce Slaton in the SF Weekly should clear up any confusion:

GATECRASHER’S LAMENT: GATE POLICY 2003

Did you know that the Gate staff caught over 300 attempted sneak-ins at the Gate, and over 150 people trying to hop or crash the fence last year? (Yeah. Uncool.) We need to put a few more deterrents in place to reduce these numbers, so consider this a forewarning for 2003!

The Gate is responsible for ensuring that all participants entering Black Rock City are supporting the community. Due to what history has shown, the staff must search all vehicles entering the Burning Man event. This is nothing new, and as always, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience it may cause to perfectly honest citizens such as yourselves.

In 2003, if stowaway is found in your vehicle, the entire vehicle will have to wait at the gate until everyone – including the stowaway — has a ticket. If they don’t come up with one, your entire vehicle gets a vacation at the gate instead of getting out on the playa.

Vehicles approaching the perimeter fence will be escorted to the Gate. Those found attempting to avoid authorized entry to the event are subject to a monetary fine, in addition to paying for a full price ticket. Vehicles attempting to breech the perimeter may be cited for trespassing by law enforcement agencies.

Please don’t become a statistic!

Spread the word on behalf of the Gate Staff!

I’LL TAKE PLAYA FOR $200

Greetings Burners!

We are on an important and urgent mission to gather dates, quotes, tips, and other historical Burning Man and related trivia, and we need your help, and we need it now! Please help us by sharing important Burning Man dates and other influential goodies and fun facts from the deep corners of your playafied brains and dusty archives! The trivia you provide is going to be used on several projects, such as a Burning Man calendar, to build a repository of Burning Factoids (like altoids, but they taste like playa) that will be dynamically published on the burningman.com website… and, we will probably find one or two other uses down the road too. See below for examples as well as how to get them to us.

Please help us by sharing information like…
Historical Burning Man dates:
*first burn, Baker beach
*Burning Man Day proclaimed by SF mayor
*early art show at Fort Mason

Historical dates of things relating to Burning Man in some direct or indirect way such as:
*Buckminster Fuller unveils geodesic dome
*first art car event
*Bill of Rights signed
*Dr. Seuss born
*Ant Farm’s Cadillac Ranch installed
*date PVC patented
*Aldous Huxley born
*date Bruno’s opened
*Dante’s Inferno published in English

Historical dates relating to Black Rock Desert such as:
*first crossing
*land speed records
*BLM formed

Historical dates in Western history such as:
*city of Reno established
*mining history
*gambling formally legalized

Dates of festivals around the world such as:
*BM regional events
*significant fire and alternative culture gatherings

Certain dates to be aware of in preparation of event such as:
*when to buy airplane tickets
*start freezing your water
*make rental car reservations

Quotes that capture the Burning Man spirit such as:
*any words ever uttered by Danger Ranger
*that Larry fellow has had a few good ones too
*snippets from BM videos, books, newspapers

We’d also love to get a list of things that might have influenced you in your thoughts and actions concerning your interest and participation in the event. Things like: favorite authors, artists, inventors, musicians, philosophers, historical people and events, and any other inspirations or quirky stuff. The quirkier, the better. : ) Come on, we know you love to express yourselves!

We will have some volunteers perusing the website on a trivia treasure hunt so please do not limit your submissions to information on burningman.com, but feel free to include anything you find there too!

We have created a form on the website you can use to submit your trivia. If possible, please provide source information such as URLs, books, videos, etc., because we are going to have to check these facts before we can use ’em (darn details 🙂 To donate your trivia and burning factoids, please go to:
burningman.com…BM_Trivia2 and use our simple survey form to enter your data.

If you already have a huge list, document, or webpage chock full of information and would prefer to email that information, send it to:

Much love and thanks from Bex, CameraGirl, Danger Ranger, Maid Marian, Nurse, and the Burning Man Web Team!

URL CORRECTION: ART QUESTIONNAIRE

Last week a cut-and-paste gremlin inserted a space into the URL for the Art Questionnaire. What we meant to say was:

Dang gremlins.

DIY DOCUMENTARIES: DID THEY EVER DEVELOP?

“Last year, several disposable cameras were part of an art experiment. Each person who had a photo taken with the camera was then supposed to take that camera and take a photo of someone else. Each person then passed along the camera to the person they took a photo of and explained the process. When the camera ran out of film, it was going to be passed to the originator of the concept.

Does anyone know if this succeeded and if so where the photos have been posted/exhibited?

Thanks,
Rob (The Accordion Man)
