Whoa! Last minute decision to bounce this week’s JRS back to me to send out after all, so I’ve got only a minute’s time to greet you and to say OH MY GOSH, 114 DAYS! and to drop you a little hint that next week we’ll be posting more detail about this year’s art theme, “Beyond Belief”…

I saw some theme camp layouts being faxed to the office today, some artists have been walking around with sketches and scale models, volunteer groups are starting to elbow each other out of the way for meeting room space, and today I sent my first fax of the year to the Gerlach office. Holy cow, we’re really going to do it all again, aren’t we?

BLACK ROCK, BOLLYWOOD, AND BELGIUM UNITE

Dale East (part of a group that ran past theme camps Pulse, Azteca, and Easter Island) writes with a fantastic story:

“Annique, a grade school art teacher in Gent, Belgium, wanted her students to work on a year-long art study of Aztec culture. She searched the internet for ‘Aztec’ and found our website (dragondebris.com) which contained photos of our 2001 theme camp – Azteca. She wrote to tell us that what we had done on the playa was quite similar to what she had in mind for her students’ project. She asked us how we brought the project to fruition, what techniques and materials we had used, etc. We started a frequent dialogue with her and assisted her class in creating a remarkable outdoor art project – sort of the European Sister City to Black Rock City’s Azteca theme camp.

Recently she sent us a DVD with footage of the finished project – a huge outdoor plaza circled by ‘stone’ columns made from cardboard boxes. A local Philips Television plant had donated the boxes onto which the kids had painted portraits of Aztec gods. This is the same technique we’d used to create our Aztec pyramid located at the Keyhole in 2001. (You can see some of this at dragondebris.com…Tribute….) In addition, they created a huge, hand-painted calendar stone modeled on the one we created for Azteca in 2001, and which resurfaced as the ground cover of the Center Café in 2002. A group of Belgian school kids had modeled an ambitious art project on our theme camp – how cool is THAT!? So many heady concepts come to mind: the global village, the power of the web, the rewards we reap by creating art in a gift economy… YUM!!!

As cool as that story is, it doesn’t end there. This year Annique asked if she and the kids could be part of our 2003 project instead of working on a separate, simultaneous project in Belgium. Of course our response was a resounding ‘Heck YEAH!’

Our theme camp in 2003 will be Bollywood. Annique and her team came up with the idea of creating ‘Saris for World Peace’ – silk saris that are both art pieces and outfits. Someone donated to Annique’s school dozens of yards of silk which became seven saris. The kids will dye each sari a different color – the colors of the seven chakras. The art will be different on each sari. One possible concept is for each sari to honor a different individual known for advancing world peace (think Gandhi, Martin Luther King, etc.). Annique stays in constant contact with our ‘American’ Bollywood team via our Yahoo Group, asking opinions, bouncing ideas off of us, and keeping us posted on their progress. She just sent us some new photos taken this past Wednesday and I posted them just last night at dragondebris.com…Peace_Saris_2…. This year, Team Bollywood will be bringing to the playa not only our own, California-grown theme camp, but also a gift to all Black Rock residents from some incredibly dedicated, talented, hip and generous kids from Belgium. Once again I ask you – how cool is THAT!!?”

JRS ed: Man… makes you want to go to school in Belgium, huh?

DRIVING HOME FROM BRC: PAY ATTENTION

Greeter Dan, who’s conscious of the potential for accidents on the road out of Burning Man, asked us to include this plea.

Most people know about bringing enough food, water, and shade to safely enjoy the desert. Everyone is gentle to each other and the land. But as soon as we all get out the gate and on the way home, a lot of us get amped up to get into cell range, take a shower, feel air conditioning, or get home and check email again as soon as possible. Understandable.

BUT when you put 30,000 people in this mindset on a little road – some of them in RVs, some of whom didn’t sleep the night before, many of whom have stuff strapped to their car, and most of whom haven’t been behind the wheel of a car for a week… bad things happen.

PLEASE start thinking now about how attentive and patient you’re going to be as you drive out on 447 this year. We are a community year-round, but we need *especially* to work together to all make it out of the Black Rock Desert safely. That means not tailgating that RV, not passing that slow overloaded jeep, not pulling up alongside the artcar to admire yourself in the mirrors taped to the tailfins. Seriously – doing these things can kill everyone involved.

Keep that mellow playa vibe until you’re on the Interstate.

10 YEAR GLOW

Glittery goddess Epiphany Stardust writes with a gripe and – as often happens with you lovely people – a solution!

“I don’t know if I’ve ever told you how much I HATE glowsticks. 5 hours of fun for 500 years in a landfill does not compute!”

I (and this is the Bunny speaking here) can’t vouch for those numbers, but even if it’s an estimate, it doesn’t add up. Here’s the alternative that was proposed: something called a “Traser” which provides the same glow, but for 10 years. Here are a few links we found by Googling. Since this year’s playa will be moonless, maybe it’s time to treat yourself to some fancy new lights!

HAVE BIKES BUT WILL NOT TRAVEL?

Recently we got a note from Shannon in Vancouver, who was offering to let her two BM veteran bikes make the trip to the playa this year without her. What a generous offer. (Before you write from Vancouver asking about them, know that we pointed her towards the Vancouver regional list.) But – here’s a thought – if you are not able to make it to BRC this year, maybe your stuff wants to go anyway! You can offer stuff on your regional email list – make another local connection in the year-round community – and keep your bikes happy!

CAFÉ DÉCOR CRAFT PARTY AND PANTY SHOW ‘N’ TELL Sunday 5/4/03

Feeling creative? Excellent! Come get your craft on and help us make the Center Camp Cafe into the fabulous oasis of splendor that does so much more than quench thirsts each year. We will provide food and beverages.

We always love donations such as extra glue sticks/glue guns, scissors, fabric, etc., but we have a few specific requests this time:
