Unsubscribe with the info at the bottom…

Now that you’ve got the full theme text in your hands, I’m guessing that you are as excited about it as we are. Oh, the things that your fellow citizens have planned! And only 107 days to wait to see them…

This week, we got a giant number of emails about the post we made on an alternative “night light” idea. It’s nice to know you’re reading (and care enough to reply to us when we accidentally post a link to a radioactive toy that nobody in the US can buy. Oops. ) This week, since y ou’re paying such close attention, we invite you to check this out: if you live in Nevada and you aren’t on the nevada-announce list, you might have missed out on vital information about how to participate in an upcoming commissioners’ meeting in Reno. We sorely need all residents of Washoe County to help support Burning Man right now, so if you or burners you know live in the area and aren’t on the Nevada Announce lists, please write to nevada-announce-subscribe.

With that, here’s the rest of the week’s news from the center of the hive:

DMV REGISTRATION IS LIVE!

Greetings, Black Rock citizens, from your friendly neighborhood Department of Mutant Vehicles! This is the first in a series of blurbs you will see in the JRS, designed to keep you informed on DMV happenings. Miz Jewelz and her team of Hotties are ramping up, doing all the behind-the-scenes work that has to happen early in the year to bring the DMV to the playa.

Read on for some words on what qualifies for Art Car status in BRC, registration information, and sound.

ART CAR DEFINITION:

Burning Man defines an Art Car as any motorized conveyance that has been creatively, radically, permanently and safely modified from its standard configuration. Vehicles should no longer represent the base vehicle used (i.e. a bus should not look like a bus). Art Cars include non-standard motorized vehicles such as couches, beds, and armchairs. Undecorated vehicles of any kind, vehicles stripped to their frame and engine, or street vehicles with minimal changes or temporary decorations are not considered Art Cars. Vehicles that will not be registered at Burning Man include Low Riders, classic cars, monster trucks, dune buggies and hot rods. There are other venues for these vehicles to be appreciated. Let the words ‘whimsical’ and ‘surreal’ be your guides.

A WORD (OR TWO) ABOUT SOUND:

Dust is not the only air pollutant! Barraging your neighbors with sound is not very neighborly. Art Cars are subject to the same sound standards as theme camps — a maximum of 300 watts.

PREREGISTRATION:

All Art Car owners must preregister their vehicles prior to coming to Burning Man. Preregistrations will need to include a LINK (no attachments!) to a URL that contains a photo of the Art Car OR send actual photos to BRC-DMV c/o Burning Man, PO BOX 884688, San Francisco, CA 94188. Cars that have not preregistered will not be licensed on the playa. Get the word out to your fellow Art Car artist, and fill out your preregistration form today!

DMV 2003 Preregistration Form:

burningman.com/dmv/dmv.html

DMV Guidelines:

2003 Updates are being made to the DMV Rules and Regs section of the Burning Man website. Please use the above art car definition as your guide.

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away. We would like to carry on this tradition and honor those who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address: remembrance (please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS!!)

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 25th) through Friday (August 29th). It will be raised to the right leg and will burn with him on Saturday night.

BM ART HITS THE NYT

The cover article of this weekend’s New York Times Magazine, written by Bill Keller, is titled “The Second Nuclear Age,” and all five photographs accompanying the piece are from Michael Light’s new visual book 100 SUNS. The work is a portrait book of the bomb, among other things, and uses images made by the United States military during the era of atmospheric nuclear testing, which lasted from 1945-1962. Michael will have a show of this work at the Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco opening on October 18. Some of you may have seen his playa installation last year, a series of these photos under plexiglass which one could walk on.

As Michael says in the 2002 art archives, “Like a similar installation I did at Burning Man in 1998 titled FULL MOON, 100 SUNS had its origins in book form, and will be published globally in the Fall of 2003 under the same name. In each case I was delighted that Burning Man was the first public exhibition of the work.” To view the archives and remember that thing from last year you’ve forgotten you forgot, visit burningman.com…02_art_playa.html

FURTHER ENLIGHTENMENT ON PLAYA ILLUMINATION

Well, we received more than a few notes back from participants regarding our mention of Trasers as an alternative to glowsticks. You all are nothing if not an informed bunch. The most salient point was that the slight radioactive content of trasers makes them illegal for import into the US. Um, yeah. Lobo wrote with a more overarching view:

“Glowsticks are derived from firefly luciferase enzyme and are made of non-toxic, readily biodegradable chemicals. Some of the ‘plastic’ sticks are made from cellulose and starch derived materials and also readily disintegrate. (JRS note: We checked around, and we’re told the glowstick stuff is a synthesized version of luciferase enzyme, so please don’t write to yell at us now about the poor fireflies!)

The ‘Traser’ alternative you suggest contains radioactive tritium, a beta emitter with a half-life of 12.5 years, and a toxic phosphor coating. If tossed away after 10 years, more than 1/2 the radioactivity remains, and is released when broken.”

The JRS admits that radioactive lights are certainly inadvisable, unnecessary in our context, and most of all, unattainable for Burners anyhow. We do regret the error.

We did receive a few pointers to battery-operated glowsticks, if you want to learn more about those:

“A better, if more expensive glowstick replacement is the Krill Light. It costs about $20. Uses two AA batteries and runs for many hours more than an average glowstick – should get a weeks worth of glow out of 1 set of AAs. It uses the same technology as our old friend EL wire and comes in six colors. Best of all, if you are done for the day you can turn them off ready for tomorrow. Quite durable. Much better than disposables. Dead lightsticks on the playa are right up there with feather boas IMHO. For more info visit: kriana.com/products.html

DON’T HIT A COW, MAN

unjon harley writes: “RE: Ranger Dannys Leaving BRC. On our way out of BRC under the star light (not) last year we almost ran into a cow. Damn thing’s butt was as high as the middle of the VW’s windshield. Burners beware of the tall cow with no tail lights standing in the road.”

We repeat: be careful out there.

THE [SUPPORTED BY A STRUCTURE OF SOME SORT] WORLD

Wizzard writes:
It all started with an 8′ hollow fiberglass sphere I rescued from destruction just before BM2002. I’m really into spheres in general, and globes in particular, so I am planning on repairing & repainting the fire engine red ball as a world globe.

The plan is to build a support structure of some sort to get it up above the playa and to allow the sphere/globe to rotate freely (using hundreds of marbles as bearings). Limited numbers of participants may also be able to climb up and inside of the sphere to ‘run’ around like a hamster in a ball. (The top half has a 2′ round opening.)

View a pile of photos and visualizations here: wizzard.com/bm2003

I Have Needs:
-A name for the project(!)
-An expert in fiberglass design/repair who can answer some questions I have about repair and resurfacing. Someone with boat or surf board construction experience would be perfect.
-(Possibly) an airbrush artist who has global aspirations
-(Possibly) a collaborator or 2 to build a perimeter of some sort

I’ve also been trying to host a brainstorming session for the last couple of months, but have been exiled by a house fire 3+ months ago [that fortunately left the ball untouched]. (Pointing out the irony is not required, thanks.) Since it may yet be a month or more until I can move back in, I’ve decided not to wait and tentatively set May 18 (afternoonish) as a date to try to gather a clever group of BRCitizens.

Some topics I’d like to brainstorm:
1. The support structure & surrounding area
2. Transporting such a huge monster to NV
3. Ways to entice interactivity
4. What does ‘beyond belief’ mean to you?

If you can help with any of my needs or want to gather with some fellow creative types, please email me at rlm.

HELP HEAL BRC

HeeBeeGeeBee Healers are gearing up for our fourth year on the playa and we could use your help. We will be on the playa early and staying late to make sure the sore and tired get their HeeBee Love.

Do you have a healing talent you would like to offer to BRC as a part of our gifting? Do you lead a movement meditation and would like to offer it on the playa? Are you the kind of healer that builds and works hard?

Please go check out our new and improved web site heebeegeebeehealers.org for all of the details and be a part of a camp that helps to change lives in amazing ways.
