82 days to Burning Man. All of a sudden now it seems really soon – we broke that 90-day barrier and now it’s just two months and change!

The JRS team was reunited last week – while visiting from back east, I got to grab lunch on Wednesday with the whipsmart Andie Grace at BMHQ, and then had a wonderful chat with Maid Marian about What It All Means before our media team meeting Thursday night. While in the office I also met Will Roger of the DPW, Bex the Ticket Minion, Frog in Participant Services, and Thorny in Accounting. It was a thrill putting faces to email addresses – meeting the people who work full time to keep the event going and getting better.

Before I came back to New York I also got together with some of my BM 2003 campmates, and that was a different kind of magic. A SF friend and I are trying to pull off a cross-country camp, with first-timers from both SF and New York. It has been so interesting to pull these two different groups together: on one hand, SF people who have a pretty good idea of what the event is about, but have heard a lot about the dancing and the desert; on the other, NYC people who have heard about BM vaguely through the art world as a venue for emerging art, but don’t know much else about it. I think these people are going to LOVE each other, and they don’t even realize that THAT’S what they’re going to remember about the event.

But on to this JRS: Larry Harvey and Marian visit Britain, results of the BLM’s spring site inspection, an important request for theme camp organizers, how to participate in art on the playa, and more!

PLAYACHICKEN.COM TICKET SCHOLARSHIP

We are thrilled to announce the Second Annual PlayaChicken.com Ticket Scholarship! In a tradition dating all the way back to 2002, PlayaChicken.com will be giving a Burning Man ticket to one deserving lifeform. The scholarship is intended for someone who absolutely cannot afford to buy their own ticket, yet will make the playa a better place for all of us once they are there.

This is not a simple random-drawing contest. Applicants will have to put forth a bit of effort to complete the application, and the winner will be the one who most impresses the elite panel of judges with their thoughtfulness and creativity.

More information and the application can be found at playachicken.com. Deadline for entries is June 30, 2003, so don’t delay!

TICKETS**<>/ TICKETS**<>/ TICKETS**<>/

Hey! Only 84 days until Burning Man. You better get that ticket soon!!

Tickets can be purchased online (http://www.burningman.com/), via mail order, or thru walk in outlets.

SOME OF OUR OUTLETS ARE CHANGING! Read below for full info.

All tickets currently cost $225. Tickets are Burning Man’s only source of revenue. Ticket sales pay for the costs of planning and building our fine city. It is important that tickets keep selling at a steady pace to ensure that we have the resources to build Black Rock City. If you are planning to attend Burning Man 2003 and don’t yet have a ticket, consider buying it sooner rather than later. You’ll be doing your part to help Black Rock City become a reality.

Burning Man tickets can be purchased at several Bay Area and regional outlets. We’ve done our best to have a variety of types of stores and geographic locations. Please remember that the kindly folks who run these fabulous stores are part of our community and deserve your courtesy, love and respect! Please allow the stores a half an hour after opening and before closing before you rush in to buy those tickets. It will help them better be able to be ready to help you!

The nitty gritty:
– tickets are $225 each.
– tickets will be on sale via outlets through the Friday before the event starts (that is 8/22/03)
– you must have EXACT change, or a money order made out to Burning Man.
– each outlet has different hours, please see the list below for outlet locations and hours of operation!
– please do not call outlets; if you have any questions about anything, either visit the Burning Man web site or call our hotline at 1-415-TO-FLAME.

PREGNANT ON THE PLAYA

For those among you who’ll find themselves in a family way on the playa, there’s a new resource for information from women who’ve done it before (or chosen not to!) Burner Brittany took a poll of participants who’ve attended Burning Man while pregnant and compiled her results for the community, so burning mothers-to-be and their families can be well-advised:

TEMPLE GUARDIANS NEEDED

Calling all Guardian Angels,

David Best is back with yet another spectacular temple this year, the Temple of Honor, made entirely of black and white patterned paper and cardboard tubes. Like last year, he will need a league of Guardian Angels to watch over the temple and its visitors every night, from Thursday to Sunday. The guarding shifts are only 3 hours, unless you’d like more, and you can guard with friends, which can be a lot of fun. If interested to learn more about the Guardians of the Temple, or if you’d like to sign up for a shift, contact Termeh at w_izdum_b.

UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE

Art Department Warning:

This year you will be watched on the playa by the enormous, omnipresent Eyes of Gawd. This theme art project is seeking crew members.

Jim Bowers, project lead, has this to say:

“For 2003 the Tribe is constructing The Eyes of Gawd project, a fully animated and interactive EL wire interpretation of God/Goddess eyes that will fly 100′ in the night sky over Burning Man.

“This project will be supported by an art car meditation pyramid called the Ziggernot. Our slightly insane group is seeking others in the area who would like to participate in this incredible project that will be seen and experienced by every “lost and found soul” on the playa.

“If you’re in the NorCal/Sacramento/Colfax area and would like to hook up for weekend workshops in Colfax, check us out at eyesofgawd.com. Thanks, jim bowers (530) 346-1006″

PENDANT DESIGN CONTEST STILL PENDING!

Fusion writes:
Alien Love Nest and Pyrosutra are still accepting entries for this year’s design contest for the fimo pendants. We’ve had some great entries so far, but we’d like to see a few more and know that many of you talented freaks may not be aware of this opportunity yet. Fusion is offering anyone in the Burning Man community the opportunity to design this year’s glowing pendants. The winner(s) will receive 100 pendant necklaces to give out on the Playa to anyone you want!

To learn where to submit your design and other import details, contact Fusion by following this link: pyrosutra.com/la

THE IRISH ARE COMING, THE IRISH ARE COMING

We are a gathering of Irish burners who will be making the trip to our spiritual home over the Atlantic Ocean. By day The Paddy Mirage will provide live music, drink, art, poetry readings and Seanachi stories. By night the mood will continue with a greater focus on live music. At all times drink will be made available in the true gift culture spirit of the festival. As you can well imagine this project is made that much harder by the fact we live thousands of miles away. We are running fundraisers to here in Ireland to fund as much as possible of the project. However all help is very much appreciated. The types of things we need are (advice on how to get these things are as valuable as the things themselves):

. Drinks, Alcoholic and non (most of this is taken care of, but of course you can never have too much!);
. Transport (for alcohol and building materials) including an RV;
. Building materials;
. Generator and PA system;
. Contact to print a picture 8 foot by 32 foot;
. Artists to contribute to the gallery using the ‘beyond belief’ theme;
. Musicians to play in the bar during the week (Traditional Irish very welcome);
. And finally and most importantly, people to drink in the bar! Any takers????

Please contact us at info or check out the web-site at burntheirishbar.com

A LIGHT COURSE LOAD

Christopher Palmer (el queso grande) writes:
“On the subject of lighting, and art, and such, I am teaching a class this summer at The Crucible called ‘Demystifying The LED.’ Info can be had at thecrucible.org/classes/neon.html just in case that sounds interesting…I know a lot of burners are likely to take it.”

In fact, this page lists classes in neon, el-wire, and LED. Here’s the LED course description: DEMYSTIFYING THE LIGHT EMITTING DIODE, (LED): The Light Emitting Diode has been around since 1962, but has only recently come into its own as a promising lighting technology for the future. They are efficient, inexpensive, never burn out, come in myriad colors, shapes, intensities, and sizes, and can be used in lots of interesting ways. In this course students will learn about LEDs and the basic circuits needed to make them work. Students will get a complete kit of LEDs and parts to use in class, and keep for future projects.

Check it out!
