Flambé Lounge visions are dancing in our heads on this two-days-until-we-meet-again afternoon. We can’t wait to see the costumes, art, and theme camps you’ve got planned. We had quite a week here in the office, especially Tuesday afternoon when we launched the new Burningman.com redesign. Whoops and hollers went up around the office as the web team hit the button and unleashed their new baby into cyberspace. We hope you’ll pop over to take a look at the lovely results.

And the big day is fast approaching: we’re told the theme camp deadline is next Tuesday, July 1! Soon the mapping of our city will begin, and none too soon for everyone out there who is itching to go home again. We’ll have a taste of home this weekend at the Flambé, and a lot of well-loved camps (Temple of Atonement, for one) are gearing up their fundraising with parties in the coming weeks.

Lots of news this week, so let’s jump in!

NEW BURNING MAN WEBSITE: BEYOND HTML

The Burning Man Webteam has something to celebrate this week: on Tuesday, we launched a newly-remodeled, facelifted, and made-over Burningman.com!

We’ve reworked the home page to bring more useful information together, added new features, like polls, new articles, and fresh playa tips, and put it all into one beautiful, new package. The navigation is largely the same, so we hope you’ll still be able to find everything you need — and that you’ll enjoy the added features and design. There’s a full news item all about the change, if you’d like to know more. Check it out at burningman.com/welcome.html.

Big congratulations to the web team on their lovely new baby!

In keeping with our 2003 Burning Man theme, we invite you to join us in creating an evening of transcendent play, interactive rites and rituals, processions, performance, shrines, labyrinths, otherworldly art and icons, temples and visions that occupy the ambiguous territory that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime.

SUPERSNAIL COLLABORATIVE PHOTO PROJECT

Help question society’s thoughts on TV, money, love, the US flag, community, body image, race, war, and that which you feel most deeply about. Think of photo ideas that will help the world. A child burning a $100 bill.

A triptych of a group of half white people and half black people.
– First show the group as they are “normally”
– Then cover everybody with playa so they are all the same color.
– Last paint the white people completely with black paint and the black people with white paint.

A woman with a pierced nipple has an Israeli flag painted on one of her breasts. Another woman (also pierced) has a Palestinian flag painted her breast. The two women’s nipple rings are linked together. Close up profile photograph of the two linked breasts.

Help create photographs that will be historic.

TICKETS: ONLY WILL CALL, NO MORE MAIL ORDER AFTER JUNE 30TH

Only 52 days until the start of Burning Man. If you don’t have your ticket yet you’d better get one today!

The Ticket Minions would like to take this opportunity to remind y’all wonderful participants out there that all Mail Order sales are going to be held at WILL CALL starting in July. That’s right, any order that is postmarked AFTER June 30th will not have tickets mailed out. Please DO NOT send in extra money to have your order sent via Secure Delivery AFTER June 30th!

The reason we do this is because we want to make certain that all of you receive your tickets BEFORE you leave for the event. The mail has proved to be rather slow this year. The last thing we want is for you to send in your order for tickets only to have your ticket take too long to get to you and arrive after you are supposed to be on your way to the playa. We can’t have that, so we decided the easiest and safest way to ensure that every participant receives the ticket they order is to hold the order at WILL CALL.

To pick up a ticket at WILL CALL you will need a photo ID for the person who ordered the tickets. We will send you a copy of your receipt – you can bring that with you as well to claim your tickets. You MUST have a photo ID in order to pick up your tickets.

We apologize for any inconveniences this may create – honestly we are doing this for the good of all participants ordering their tickets in July.

For more information on how to get tickets check out our website –

BIG ZIPPER-TOP BAGS: A HOT LEAD

Burner Kimberly writes:

Back in April the law office that I was working for relocated and the moving company brought in some huge ziplock bags for our keyboards, mouse and phones…they thought I was a bit off my rocker when I kept asking where I could find them for myself. They never did divulge the info 🙁 I’ve tried to find them online, but had no luck…However, recently a friend was at a hardware store here in SF CENTER HARDWARE COMPANY, (415) 861-1800, 999 MARIPOSA ST (Mariposa @ Pennsylvania Ave, by 280 on Potrero Hill, not far from BM headquarters). I just called for pricing and the woman that answered the phone gave me the following information. They have these in 2.4 gallons in packages of 8 (13″ x 14″) for $10.49, 12 gallons in packages of 4 (24″x21 3/8″) for $10.49 and 20 gallons in packages of 3 (24″ x 33 5/8″) for $10.49. I just had to pass on the info :).

{JRS Note: We’ve also seen the oversized zip-top bags in the various discount department stores in Reno. We saw them in the sporting good section (think fishing) at the big Kmart. These are great for packing your playa clothes into – not only does it keep things neatly folded, but if you don’t end up wearing something, it won’t be covered in playa dust when you get home!}

DEATH GUILD THUNDERDOME ASKS YOUR HELP

“Listen on, listen on:
This is the truth of it.
Fighting gets to killing, and killing gets to warring.
Look at us now!
All busted up and talking about hard rain.
But we’ve learned…
By the dust of them all, Death Guild has learned.
Now, when people get to fighting
It happens here, and it ends here.
Two man enter. One man leave…”

For the past four years, Death Guild Thunderdome has been an active, and very interactive part of playa community. To celebrate our 5th anniversary of duking it out in the dome, we’re asking you (yes, YOU) to become a part of OUR community. We need your help.

Our resources are dwindling, making fundraising projects more and more difficult to put together. As it stands, we’ve got an ongoing ‘CD drive’, a fundraiser/auction club night (on July 3rd at the DNA Lounge, if you wanna come!), and a nifty rally we’re setting up for the first weekend in August. But even if all three go well, we’ll still be in a bit of a bind. Harnesses need to be replaced, gas needs to be bought, generators rented, weapons made, and much much more. And to be quite honest, we’d rather put our effort and limited resources into making a fabulous presentation on the playa for everyone to enjoy.

Death Guild Thunderdome operates daily on the playa for several hours. (This year we plan to hold fights only at night, making a grander show of events that’s not to be missed!) We are home to Radio KAOS, and to the amazing Diva Marisa. We have nifty cars into which we’ve poured a bit of our souls. And if nothing else, we look like we’re wearing costumes even when we’re not, so come check us out!

Whether you like the music on the radio, or you like kicking your best friend’s butt in the dome, we hope you like our camp enough to please help us out, even a little. A small donation may not seem like much to you, but it means a lot to us. Just go to paypal.com and drop us a few (or more) dollars using decay as the recipient address. Then stop by the camp and say ‘hey’ and know that you were as important a part of making the camp great as the people who bolt the big spinny sign onto the dome, ’cause you helped to make it happen in the first place.

The Children of the Twilight Tribe thank you.

PLAYA FOODIES: GOT RECIPES?

Burning Beach is looking for a few good playa recipes…

Man cannot live on Pop Tarts and Gatorade alone, and we’d like collect and publish your favorite playa recipes in a new section of Burning Beach. Last year we put a call out for packing lists, and that section of the website is one of the most visited, particularly as the event gets closer. Email your favorite desert delight to santacruz and we’ll start compiling them.

Burning Beach is the Santa Cruz regional and can be found online at burningbeach.com.

HOLY MOLEY, THAT’S A BIG DISCO BALL

…in fact, at ten feet tall, it’s the largest one in the world, and the artist who made it would like to bring it to the playa. To do this, he needs to connect with a camp who are interested in having it decorate (such an insufficient word) their space, and who can help with logistics, a crane, and transportation. I’m guessing that with the right lights, this thing could glitterify our entire desert panorama, right to the top of the Calicos, but I’m no expert…

Be sure to scroll down the page to see a pic of the “Diversity Ball” at Utah’s Synorgy event back in May. Imagine it! One thousand pounds of nothin’ but disco. Swoon.

WHERE CAN I BUY EL-WIRE? IDAHO…

Pat aka Naked writes from Idaho:

Hello burners! We want to let you know that we offer a 20% burner discount on EL-Wire at coolightwest.com. This discount applies to all products on our site, so that you can create lighting for yourself and your camp that is re-usable and friendly to the environment. Thanks! Naked

…OR, HAWAII

Or you might want to get your light from Hawaii burner Henri Carnal. No matter where you live, if you like the idea of “Flashing Bicycle Valve Caps”, you might want to check out his site anyway.

home.hawaii.rr.com/carnal

You want a participant discount? Ok. “If you are planning on using these as playa gifts, tell me Larry’s last name and I’ll take 20% off your order. The discount is 30% is for Burners who choose to pick up their order on the playa either at my camp or the Cafe (or have them delivered by PedEX, who will be amply rewarded with blinky stuff for their efforts.) This is because a) It sort of assures that they will be used for night safety or as playa gifts and b) I save on shipping.”

ONE WORD, BEN: BIODEGRADABLE

Continuing in the material realm, Logan writes: “a friend of mine at PEC here in SF has located companies who now make excellent biodegradable “plastic” utensils. They are created using corn starch mostly, and will biodegrade and yes, can even be thrown in the compost bin as they are made entirely from vegetable matter. They are just as solid as the hated plastic variety.

Of course most burners are washing and reusing their silverware, but in case disposable is the way to go these just can’t be beat. Imagine not a single plastic utensil on all of the playa this year! Some companies are local, all will ship, and the prices are cheap. Remember to buy recycled plates and cups from local groceries too!

feel free to email me any questions 🙂

CHICAGO, THAT TRUCKIN’ TOWN

Chicago Burners,

Dan Pugh and Lynn Barnett, ImageNode:Chicago, are currently setting up the first-ever Chicago to Black Rock City 24-foot truck transport. In order to make the transport feasible, we are looking for individuals and camps interested in renting the excess space on the truck. As a not-for-profit endeavor, the cost of transport space will be determined by the total number of cubic feet of cargo area rented (i.e., the more people renting the lower the cost per cubic foot).

Rental Price per Cubic Foot (according to the final percentage of truck space rented)
24′ x 7.5′ x 7.5′ = 1380 cubic ft total
-100% full = $2.50 per cubic foot
-75% = $3.50 per cubic foot
-50% = $5.00 per cubic foot
-25% = $9.50 per cubic foot

The Truck Schedule:
Load: Wednesday, August 20th time TBA
Drive out: Leave Chicago August, 21st 5:00am.
Playa Arrival: Saturday, August 23rd.
We understand there are some camps that might be interested in a Saturday morning arrival. Let us know and we can work with you. Because Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends for moving truck companies, the reservation needs to be in ASAP to keep our $0.31 per mile commercial rate (as opposed to $0.91 consumer rate). Again greater participation will make the truck cheaper for everyone. If you and/or your camp are interested in participating in the transport please email, ASAP, Dan Pugh at eworzero with the following information:

-Name (individual or camp contact)
-Contact info (email and phone)
-Items to transport*
-Estimate of total space needed (width x depth x height = cubic feet)

*Some Ideas for Shipping:
-Playa Art
-Bicycles
-Camping supplies (i.e., tents, sleeping bags, tarps, shade structures)
-Costumes
-Domes
-Building supplies and tools

Be Well,

COMMONWEALTH CLUB: ARTS IN A POST-BOOM ECONOMY

The Arts Section of the Commonwealth Club of California presents a panel discussion:

“Renaissance or Recession? San Francisco Arts in the Post-Boom Economy”

Wednesday, July 16th
6:30pm (pre-reception starts at 5:45)
The Commonwealth Club, 595 Market Street, 2nd Floor

The panel will bring together a diverse group of representatives from the San Francisco arts community to discuss the impact of the post-boom economy on the arts and cultural infrastructure within San Francisco.

Panelists:
Brent Assink, San Francisco Symphony
Christine Kristin (aka Ladybee), Burning Man
Sean San Jose, Campo Santo Theater
Ethan Watters, The Grotto
Brenda Way, ODC

Moderated by:
John Killacky, The San Francisco Foundation

The panel will explore the economic realities and new models used by arts institutions, while attempting to uncover tangible actions being taken by artists to create solutions. It is our hope that both panelists, and audience, will walk away with new ideas and approaches to deal with current economic (and social) realities.

– Is this a time of recession and/or renaissance? What indications argue for either side?
– Space is affordable again – is it making a difference for running programs/organizations?
– What new trends in arts funding, community relations, and artistic collaboration are emerging?
– What longer-term impact might this have on the “ecosystem” of funders, patrons, artists and administrators?

Cost: Commonwealth Club Members, $6.00. Non-members, $12.00. Students, $3.00.
Reservation: Call the Commonwealth Club at 597-6700
