A very happy long weekend to you all as we hurtle down the runway at 58 days until Burning Man! We got an email yesterday from our pal JB of Bollywood, who like us, must be envisioning a playa filled with gods and goddesses a-roaming (as opposed to pirates, you see.) JB quips:

(re)tired: The Floating World”
wired: Beyond Belief!
“Ohm is the new arrrrrr!”

Gotta love that. (And you’ve gotta love the “Saris for Peace” project that Bollywood’s been up to this year, which we reported on back in JRS/7.26/04.31.03. I saw the saris this weekend at the Flambé Lounge… stunning! All at once at that moment, my real-and-true excitement about BRC 2003 kicked into VERY high gear. Burners are doing beautiful things!)

Speaking of previous Rabbits du Jack, if you’ve been searching for old issues, you might note that the link hasn’t been updated in about a month. We had a code freeze during the redesign, but the webteam are working hard to get caught up with the web changes from that time. Likewise, the Coyote Nose DPW report from our own dear Coyote have not been posted in a while, for the same reasons. We’ll have a whole rash of new Coyote Noses to point you to in an upcoming JRS, so stay tuned here and to http://www.burningman.com!

Meanwhile, here’s the meat of the matter before you head off for your plans for the 4th. Hope your long weekend is a great one!

SURVIVAL GUIDE 2003 AND AFTERBURN 2002 POSTED

The Survival Guide for Burning Man 2003 has returned from the printer, and volunteers are busily stuffing them into envelopes to send to all of you who have purchased tickets!

Meanwhile, here’s a PDF (626K) of the SG so you can get started on those packing lists! The HTML version will be posted soon as well. burningman.com/media/doc/pdf/survival_guide/03_survival_guide.pdf

We also wanted to be certain to highlight again that the six-months-in-the-making Afterburn 2002 has been posted… your full report on the people, the dollars, the art, the cleanup: afterburn.burningman.com/02

Quality reading for a lazy July day. I’m getting awfully inspired…

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away. We would like to carry on this tradition and honor those who have impacted our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is our final call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address: remembrance.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 25th) through Friday (August 29th). It will be raised to the right leg and will burn with him on Saturday night.

May they all continue on to the eternal playa…

MUFFLE THY SCOOTERS

Yer friendly neighborhood Department of Mutant Vehicles here, with a word or two on scooters. You know, the nifty, one-person-standing kind that have started to materialize at Burning Man…

If you have one of these scooters, or camped near a thoroughfare last year, or basically were anywhere on the playa, you’ll know this: they’re LOUD!

While these scooters do not require a DMV license (but remember that Vespas and similarly styled vehicles are considered mopeds/motorcycles, and DO need a license), we at the DMV are asking for your cooperation in quieting these noisy little suckers.

Help reduce sound pollution in Black Rock City! Check out these links for how to muffle thy scooter:

EARTH GUARDIANS NEED VOLUNTEERS AND MATERIALS

Burning Man and the Earth Guardians are starting an ecological restoration project at Frog Farm, the springs near the playa where the event gets its water. Ecological restoration is a new blend of art and science that aims to bring back or improve habitats that have been damaged. Healing the land will bring together our community to leave a positive trace on our desert home.

During Burning Man 2003 The Earth Guardians will lead volunteer work parties to enhance the springs’ wildlife habitat by fencing, planting trees and removing weeds around the warm spring. There’s lots of work to be done before and during the event, and we’re looking for volunteers to help make this vision a reality.

The first work field trip has been set for Saturday, July 12th. We will meet with the landowner on site and finalize plans. We’ll thoroughly photograph and survey the restoration area and mark the fence line in preparation for grading. If the equipment is ready, we’ll even use a kite-lofted camera to take aerial pictures. There will be 2 more pre-event work trips to Frog Farm, at the beginning of August and the weekend before the big to-do.

We’re looking for a few good participants to help us during the event:
* Naturalists and scientists to help lead nature walks and volunteer work parties
* Natural materials artists to collaborate on brush structures for wildlife habitat
* Volunteers to loan and drive their pickup or four-wheel-drive vehicle to transport people from black rock City to Frog Farm on Friday and Sunday morning
* A professional videographer or photographer to document the project

We’re looking for materials for the restoration project, too:
* Fence posts and barbed wire
* Drip irrigation tubing and emitters, 12 V solar panel, pump and irrigation timer
* Clean (leafless, seedless) brush, bird nesting boxes

Check out the Earth Guardians section of burningman.com. For more info about the restoration project, E-mail Andy at restorefrogfarm. To join the restoration list server, e-mail restorationproject-list-subscribe.

GREAT PACKING TIPS FROM AUSTIN

This is the kind of thing your smartest friend figures out after going to the event for a few years, and then tips you off on. And now EVERYONE will know! [Where to buy these big ziptop bags of which she speaks? Keep reading this JRS to find out…] Pegorama writes (from Austin, so the store names she mentions aren’t universal):

I’ll offer the same tips I offer every year. RE: costumes and underclothes, very important parts of BM for many of us.

Buy the superlargest zip-top see-thru baggies you can get. I think Hefty makes the biggest ones, in a pink box, same place where all the other zip locks are sold at HEB. (Going to Container Store will also get you the same bags at a much higher price.)

Get your costumes in order, complete with accessories for each costume all together. Then pack everything for one costume into one baggie and seal it. As you seal it, press the air out of the baggie. Do the same for each costume. IE: Catholic Schoolgirl Bondage costume: pack the buttonup shirt, the whips n chains, the plaid skirt, the bracelets, earrings, thong, kneehighs… all together in one bag. One bag = one costume, and you can see right into the bag and know what’s what without opening it and exposing it to dust before you are ready to wear it. Same is recommended for UNDIES and SOCKS. But… DON’T put all the socks and undies into one baggie. Get the smaller baggies and pack 3-4 prs of underwear in each one, same with socks. Take TWICE AS MANY socks are you are used to wearing. PROMISE. You’ll never be sorry you brought extra socks at BM. Make sure that at least one pair of shoes can be worn with 2 pairs of socks. See below for shoe notes.

If any of your costumes do not fit into a huge zip-top bag… go to Home Depot and buy the CLEAR barrel-sized trash bags. They don’t zip shut, but you can sit on the bag as you force the air out of the bag, then tie it into a knot. {If you do this, then all clothing takes up less space.} I also like the clear plastic trash bags for most everything at Burning Man – due to their immense size! Also quite nice is the ability to determine what is recycling and what is truly trash – just by looking at the bag, instead of the black opaque ones that you have to open to find out what’s in it.

What’s up with the zip-top bags? Protects your stuff from rain and DUST until you are ready to wear them. Makes it easy to find the costume/clothing you want, just grab the bag and you’re good to go. The other nice part of the bags… if you DON’T wear the items in any bag, then – YAY – no washing of those items to get the dust off, just slip back into your closet/drawers upon your return.

As a final resort, I always put my “leaving the playa” clothes into one bag. That way, when I am ready to go, I have something suitable to wear, clean undies, clean socks, blah…

Hope these tips help.
Peace
pegorama

MARS IS COMING TO BURNING MAN

Greetings Burners, Astronaughty here. I want to give all of you a heads up on an interesting astronomical event that will occur during our event this year. On Wednesday, August 27, the planet Mars will be the closest it’s been to earth since the time of Jesus: TWO THOUSAND YEARS! (The reason why they’re launching so many Mars probes lately.) Our nearest planetary neighbor will be visible in all its yellow-orange glory in the SE every night, but brightest and closest on Wednesday. With no moon and a pitch black sky, Mars should be putting on a wonderfully vivid show.

Keep the fire burning, I’m comin’ home soon!

Love and Peace,
Astronaughty

ANOTHER WORD ON THOSE BIODEGRADABLE UTENSILS

“On the subject of “disposable utensils” made out of cornstarch recommended by a JRS reader last week, it’s important to remember that everything we don’t consume at Burning Man needs to be PACKED OUT. There is no garbage collection and only aluminum is recycled. Too much of what we bring can wind up hitting the ground. An easier and more sustainable option is to eliminate throwaway “use it and lose it” kinds of products to minimize trash disposal. Think finger foods (go wraps, sandwiches, fruit!) and reusable utensils (mine is a titanium Spork).

Biodegradable and compostable materials are no different from synthetics if they’re left on the playa or tossed in a burn barrel. Organic matter won’t decompose on our alkaline playa, and is MOOP like all the rest.

So please plan to pack everything out. Better yet, consider convenient and earth-friendly ways to Reduce and Reuse: earthguardians.burningman.com/tips.html.”

– Nancy

We’ll second that… the JRS (and we are certain, the original participant who posted the tip) did NOT mean to insinuate that biodegradable utensils were suitable to toss on the playa. NOTHING is suitable to toss on the playa! While they’ll degrade in your organic compost, and they’re better in a landfill than plastic, the best playa flatware remains the type you can wash and reuse.

RANGER TRAINING IN NYC (OR BALTIMORE)

So, you’ve thought about volunteering to be a Black Rock Ranger at Burning Man, but you missed the last training in NYC. Or, you are a returning ranger and thought you’d have to go to the During the Event Playa training.

Well, you’re in luck. Due to some slick engineering by the Black Rock Ranger Director, Ops Department, Training Team and Ranger Council, there will be another official Black Rock Ranger Training right here in NYC. Yes, this one will count as well for the one mandatory training session in order to volunteer as a Black Rock Ranger.

All we need is your desire and a weekend day that you are free and we can get us all trained up. This is actually a very exciting opportunity in the world of Burningman. Doing this training will be quite memorable.

Email splinter@rangers.org with the remaining weekend days you are available to attend a training. Baltimore people, shout out loud, we are not chained to NYC. But please remember, to volunteer to be a Black Rock Ranger, you must have been to Burningman at least once already. There are no exceptions to this. It’s about knowing your community before you can help your community.

Peace in Better Rangering for better Burning,

Splinter
PS The training will run from 10am to 6pm. and involve lots of, well, fun, and information.

BIKE TIPS FOR BURNERS: HOW TO CHOOSE A PLAYA BIKE

Put several BRC bike experts in one room and what transpires? “Bike Tips for Burners” Good thing we took notes. Between now and The Week of the Burn, you’ll find a new one every few issues of JRS. Take them to heart and you’ll be pedaling along the playa all week long.

First up: How to Choose a Playa-Appropriate Bike

Do NOT buy just any old bike on the way to BRC unless you know something about repairing bikes. “While you certainly don’t need a ‘good’ bike in BRC, you definitely need one that works adequately or your life–and mine–will be a bummer.” explains CTP from Borrachos Y Bicicletas, the bike repair camp in the 3:00 Plaza. Here what to look for when picking a playa-worthy bike:

– Examine those TIRES. Ensure they are not threadbare.
– Check the CHAINS. Are they rusted?
– Take a good look at the FRAME. No cracks, etc., right?
– Wonder about the WHEELS. Do they look bent? Missing spokes?
– Stop to inspect BRAKES. Missing components? Shot brake pads? Destroyed rims? Take careful inventory!

Believe it or not, local BRC experts have worked on bikes that have had ALL of the aforementioned maladies at once, which does not paint a pretty playa picture for anyone involved, so choose carefully.

Once you find the perfect bike, be sure to outfit it not just with your colorful personality, but also with light(s) for evening adventures. Consider threading el-wire along the frame in a unique design (carefully!) so you’re easily identified by your friends and can quickly spot it yourself post playa pit-stops. If you’re part of a theme camp, you may want to think about decorating your bikes with analogous big flags and markers. That way, they’ll be instantly recognizable to fellow campmates in the event one goes missing.

Finally, not to deflate the mood, but One Good-Looking Cowboy has this to say on the subject of transporting your mound of metal to BRC: “When you mount your bicycle tire next to the exhaust pipe, the tire will suffer.” Therefore, if you want to arrive in moving style, be sure to affix your bike to your car appropriately!

The next bike-related blurb, you beg? A Burner’s Bike Repair Kit. Stay tuned.

DA RAT IS FLAT-OUT OF BIKES!

In an earlier JRS, we introduced our pal Da Rat, a Nevada resident who collects and refurbishes bikes all year long for fellow Burners to pick-up en route to Black Rock City. However, due to overwhelming demand from out-of-towners in need of pedals on the playa, Da Rat is already flat-out of inventory! As he says, “165 bikes in 30 days… been a blast!! And 55 days to get them all ready…”

That means every bike he has is now, uh… SPOKEn for.

Da Rat thanks you for your wonderful support and looks forward to seeing you all on the playa!

THE RE-CYCLERY STILL HAS BIKES!

Marilyn writes: To find affordable, recycled bikes for Burning Man visit Re-Cyclery, a bike thrift store operated by Trips for Kids. We offer year round bargains on refurbished donated bikes, and each year many Burning Man participants visit our shop to buy their bike for the event. Re-Cyclery is located at 610 4th Street in San Rafael, CA and is open Tuesday – Friday noon – 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Each year Trips for Kids takes hundreds of inner-city kids from the Bay Area on guided mountain bike adventures, many of whom have never been outside of their urban neighborhoods. In 1999 Trips for Kids became a national program. There are now 32 chapters from coast to coast, with more in the works. For more info, tripsforkids.org or (415) 458-2986.

-The Burning Man Video Documentation Team Needs Equipment

The Burning Man video documentation team needs post-production equipment ASAP. We have a range of footage that needs to be processed before we go back to work on the playa this year. Please help us reach our goals by donating equipment (or use of equipment) you may have access to, if you can:

We need:

* 2 Color NTSC monitors

* 2 VCR Decks with ability to slow footage to a frame-by-frame pace/ jog shuttle transport.

* 1 Super VHS deck- semi pro quality with jog shuttle transport like the Sony SLVR100

* 2 Computers with DSL internet capabilities- we prefer PC’s so it can communicate smoothly with the network set up but wouldn’t reject a Mac, especially a dual 800mhz G4 with an array of over 100 gigs of RAM.

* 1 Mini DV player/recorder

Shooters: experienced shooters with a 3 chip, minidv camera, external/ lavalier mic, tripod who are willing to volunteer on the playa this year

If you are a shooter or have these or other post-production equipment that you would like to donate to Burning Man please contact me at: theliberator

SLYTHERIN CAMP

Snakies want to multiply! Imagine playa snakies (caduseuses, double helixes, Promethea’s staff, lobster heads, whatever you see them as) dancing in harmony across the desert! See supersnail.com/bm01/set3 (or #55 of 4738 in the BM photo gallery) to get an idea. Is there anyone out there who would like to make a snakie costume and join me in a little wandering performance? I found a few of you at Flambé Lounge – now come find me! The costumes take work and are unfortunately not cheap (any funders out there?), but it’s definitely doable to pull together a small slither of snakies before BRC springs up. Dancers/choreographers especially encouraged. Useful but unnecessary skills include: sewing, soldering and moving like a snake. Please contact bridgehardy@yahoo.com for more info or if you have photos or video of this project.

Thanks!

PUT YOUR PAST ON DISPLAY

Our Black Rock Hotel & Casino theme camp is looking to borrow past BM costumes, unique instruments, etc. to put on display in our hotel and casino. The items will not be worn or used, but will be displayed like a BM museum to capture the essence of Burning Mans past (think in the style of “Hard Rock Café” memorabilia). We are a veteran group of 7 seven years and would love to add this element to our theme camp. If you are excited about or are interested in lending your piece of BM history for 5 days, please email me, Kate, at kateho@yahoo.com with a picture of your item and a story of its significance to you and/or to the Burning Man experience and we can coordinate from there. Stories will be on display with the items for all to read!
We will likely ask that you bring your item to BM with you, we will display it, then return it to you safely on Sunday/Monday after the burn. But contact me if you have questions about this.

Thank you! Kate, kateho

“The Black Rock Hotel & Casino is a luxury destination resort, conveniently located in Black Rock City, Nevada. Our guests enjoy the understated elegance of our exceptional facilities and service, as well as the rich cultural opportunities that abound just outside our entrance. Facilities include a spa, lush garden, bar, wedding chapel, funeral parlor, grand lobby, 24 hour concierge, valet art car parking, hotel shuttle, and of course our state-of-the-art games (including BINGO!)

THREE MORE SOURCES FOR ZIPLOCKTASTIC BAGORAMA-SHIZZLE

HERE’S MAUREEN: Reading the latest JRS News, (June 26) I had to send on this info about industrial zip-top bags. Perhaps Burner friends could go together to buy these bags in bulk (who really wants 500 for him or herself?!), but they’re a hell of a lot cheaper than what’s quoted in the last JRS. Source: ULINE, 1-800-295-5510, uline.com. They have pages and pages of zipper bags; lighter weights as well. They ship the same day as ordered. These prices are for 4 mil., very heavy bags 13″ x 16″, $50 for 500 Bags (compare with $10.49 for 8 bags in the last JRS), 24″ x 24″, $61 for 250 Bags, 24″ x 36″, $73 for 200 Bags.

HERE’S JOHN Garrigues aka Boris: I found a couple of web sources for giant ziptop bags. Pretty reasonable prices I think! I thought of this after seeing it mentioned in the last JRS.
plasticbags.bz/lz.asp and
ourshippingsupplies.com.

HERE’S DANIELLE: Here’s another lead regarding bags for the playa. A company called National Bag (out of Ohio) nationalbag.com. Has tons of industrial packaging for sale. We’re talking bags, bag sealers, bubble-cushioned bags, oversized bags, tons of different tapes and ties. They may be another good resource for folks looking for oversized, or customizable bags.

THANK YOU BURNERS!
