Jrs V07 I45

JRS VOLUME #7; ISSUE #45

JRSV7:#45:08.13.03

Ok, we had to split the JRS in two this week, to avoid clogging the participating mail servers. Communicating with the Burning Man community would be so much easier if we could just get everyone together in person. Wouldn’t have to happen often; maybe once a year. I think I know a place in Nevada where there’s room for us to sleep. What are you all doing at the end of August? You free? Great. Let’s give it a shot, it could be a heck of a time.

This JRS issue is a thrill, and should provide Maximum Playa Preparation Motivation (MPPM). If you’re a newbie coming out for the first time, it will clue you in to about 1/1000th of the opportunities you’re about to have to do something unique. If you’re a veteran getting ready to strap on your playa shoes for your sixth trip out, it will remind you why you go back every year. What we’re trying to say is that our PARTICIPATE section is bigger than it’s been all year – and this is just what’s come in during the past few days. Whether you want to perform, teach, windsurf, strum, hold hands, pontificate, hug, reflect, chat, make a whistle or just wet the one you have, there’s something for you in this issue. Keep on reading further down for things to do until then (EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS), and folks that want to help you get there (RESOURCES AND DISCOUNTS).

The man burns in 17 days, which means you’ll all start hitting the playa in a little over a week. Amazing. Please don’t worry about getting in after dark – we’ll leave the Man on for you.

PLAYA COCKTAILS: IF IT CAN’T GO DOWN THE SINK, DON’T PUT IT IN THE DRINK!

Planning on handing out cocktails in your camp? Thank you, we’d love one! But keep this thought from DPWer Reno-based, Supply-runner-extraordinaire Fanny May in mind: “When I ran my first playa bar in ’99, we brought all the amenities including cocktail straws, bev naps, plastic cup add ons, etc. it was the worst moop ever and you could follow the trail down the street. (how embarrassing!) anyhoo, it may be something worth mentioning along the line. also worth mentioning IMHO, is if you want to participate w/ a tavern or such and plan on drinking, bring a cup. bring two and make someone else’s day for that matter. can’t wait for the rest of you suckers to get up here!”

EL WIRE TIPS TO HELP YOU SOLDER ON

If you are like me, the last few days before Burning Man are spent hunched over a workbench with the smell of hot solder and burning flux wafting in the air. I have been in love with EL Wire ever since I was introduced to it at BM.

Anyway, here are some tips that may help you finish your EL project and maybe actually get some sleep.

1. Plan ahead. I know this is common sense, but spend some time sketching out your project before you embark. Graph paper works especially well here and plan to buy about 20 percent more EL wire footage than you think you need.

2. Order your supplies soon. I ordered raw wire from CoolNeon.com and was happy that they included niceties like copper tape and heat shrink tubing in the package. They have many types of EL wire that cost between $1 and $1.50 per foot.

3. Try out the new Tail Wire which adds a small flap to the normal EL wire cylinder making it easy to attach to fabrics and other surfaces.

4. Instead of sewing your EL, I suggest using a fabric glue like “Unique Stitch” or Aleen’s “OK To Wash-It” which should be easy to find in the adhesive section of your local craft store. Another method of attaching EL wire to fabric is to use a standard office stapler. For my project, I used a combination of Unique Stitch glue and staples. Unique Stitch dries in about 30 minutes but you should let it cure for 24 hours.

5. When attaching your Tail Wire to fabric use appropriately sized black binder clips (available from your company’s supply closet). Keep advancing them to new locations as previous sections dry. Afterward, staple the EL “tail” at key stress points like corners, joints and ends. Be sure to never staple or cut the core EL wire.

6. For soldering, pickup a “third hand” from Radio Shack to help hold your wire. Also, make sure that you use flux and a clean bit in your soldering iron. Soldering instructions are on CoolNeon.com.

7. Lastly, use epoxy to seal the ends of all your EL Wire lest you like to receive little shocks every now and again. I also use epoxy to seal the ends of all my shrink tubing as an extra precaution.

GEOCACHE IN

Our camp, Whimsea Shel Garden, would like to post an invitation to all geocachers. We will leave a card at the information center in the card file under geocache with coordinates with our cache. If other people would like to participate, thay can also leave their cache coordinates on the card. It would be in a nice central location so we can all find them this year.

Any questions, please contact:

Rabbit note: If you’re wondering what the heck “geocache” means, Google.com brought back: geocaching.com Tag line for the site says: “The Sport Where You are the Search Engine” hmmmm!

TIPPING IS CUSTOMARY IN THIS CITY

Back by popular demand, here are a bunch of tips and tricks one burner has picked up over the years of heading up to our little desert oasis. If it is your first time to Burning Man or you have a friend who is going for the first time, this is a good reference tool. Even if you’re a playa veteran, there are some hints or reminders that you might’ve forgotten.

pleasuresean.com…TipsforBman.html

Separately, Paul, of Camp Coco Velvet writes to share his camp’s Top 20 Tips for Reveling in Burning Man:

1. Applying sunscreen to the various parts of a camp-mate should be the first order of business each day.
2. If it’s hot (basically, all daylight hours), don’t touch anything metal without gloves – preferably leather gloves. Burnt hands on tools, pipe, rebar, etc., ouch, ouch, ouch.
3. Learn 3 or 4 jokes before you go.
4. Materials like denim or Carhartt fabric should be avoided at all cost. After about 1/2 a day in the heat, between your salty sweat and the playa dust, the fabric will attain a texture quite similar to 100 grit sandpaper. Trust me, you don’t want this between you and your bicycle seat.
5. Don’t expect your camp-mates to have the same sense of mission or urgency about projects that are inherently yours. They may help, they may not, but if it’s your idea (regardless of whether others think it’s a good idea too), don’t be surprised if they’re busy with good ideas of their own.
6. Be very careful about “showing” something that’s yours to someone from outside of your camp. The line at BM between showing and giving can often be confused, so be aware if you don’t intend to share. But if you intend to give, don’t hold back.
7. If you find yourself getting grouchy, stop what you’re doing, tell people you’re taking a break and drink water.
8. If you find yourself getting too hot and don’t feel well, stop what you’re doing, tell people you’re taking a break and drink water.
9. Try to take a moment every day and help someone (camp-mate, neighbor, stranger) with something they’re trying to get done.
10. If you have something (clothing item, bike, food item, booze, etc.) that you don’t wish to share, please say so.
11. If you have equipment that you don’t want other people to mess with, please say so.
12. Be very careful if your bike seat has been in the sun for a while. You really don’t want this burn.
13. If you think something in camp might possibly blow away, it will.
14. If you need help with some chore, ask for it. Don’t just try to power through it on your own and get mad about it.
15. Baby Wipes, Ear Plugs, Sunscreen and Water are all you really need. Dust Mask & Sunglasses come in as close seconds.
16. Nobody else is responsible for your Burning Man experience.
17. Coolers need to stay in the shade.
18. The new – high powered – Coleman lanterns get extremely hot. Be careful.
19. It’s ok to ride your bike directly into the heart of huge dust devils. You won’t get swept away.
20. Burning Man is not work. It is not a job. Do not let habits sucker you into treating it as such.

PAUSE TO REFLECT, II: DAYTIME FIREWORKS

In this year that is “Beyond Belief” take the time to “Pause to Reflect”. Everyday at noon from Wednesday on, step to the playa side of the Esplanade with your hand held mirror and participate in a blinding display of daytime fireworks. If you have ever looked over at Oakland from San Francisco near sunset and seen the sun reflecting off the houses on the hills you have an idea of the effect we are striving for. I (the sheik) will have mirrors to hand out each day on the playa side in front of center camp.

I only have about a hundred so it would be even better if you can bring your own mirrors too. Camping stores sell small acrylic unbreakable mirrors that are perfect for the playa.

So join us to “pause to reflect” and participate in the first ever daytime fireworks display on the playa. Unbelievable!

THE BLACK ROCK CITY SALON

A Serious/Intellectual camp on the Playa.

Patterned after the Paris Salons of the early 20th century, the Black Rock City Salon is a meeting place that will host intimate, intelligent and creative conversations on specific topics related to Beyond Belief and Burning Man. All conversations will be recorded and a permanent transcript will be available for the Burning Man Archive and Participants who request such. brcsalon.org.

Note that the space is a small space (meant for about 8 people at a time). And what we need now is your feedback. If you are an individual who enjoys thinking and desires to partake in cogent, pithy (sometimes delicious) conversation (and WANTS THEIR VOICE TO BE PART OF A PERMANENT BURNING MAN ARCHIVE), we need you to PARTICIPATE. Our website has a FORUM where you can voice your opinion on possible discussion topics and throw in TOPICS THAT YOU WISH TO BE EXPLORED.

Also be aware that the space has some availability as a community space in center camp. If you need a space for a small event (8 people), i.e., yoga class, drumming workshop, poetry reading, et cetera, please let me knowatfrancescoraneri. We will try to accommodate the community as much as possible.

I am also looking for someone experienced in SHAMANIC DRUMMING. I would like to host a couple sessions on the playa in this space. Please contact me francescoraneri so that we can set up a schedule.

PALENQUE NORTE TO OPEN INTERNET PHONE BOOTH ON THE PLAYA

For all the burners around the world who can’t make it to this year’s burn in person, Palenque Norte is going to attempt to “Webcast” our lecture series. … ALSO, two-way voice communication from BRC over the Internet will also be available for all who want to use it.

On the Palenque Norte Web site (palenquenorte.org) you will find two links in the middle of the page. The first one will launch the TalkSpace control enabling people to listen to our lecture series over the Internet. The second link will launch a TalkSpace conference that any of the residents of Black Rock City may use whenever they like (until after this year’s burn :-).

Think of it as a free phone booth on the Playa. All you will need to use it is a PC, a connection to the Net (which should be available in camp if you have a WiFi card), speakers, and a microphone. (We recommend you test this with a friend before arriving at Burning Man. Detailed instructions are available on the control that opens when you click the links.) Please keep in mind that unlike the telephone, you need to make prior arrangements with other parties to meet you in TalkSpace at a given time. However, there is no software to install and no requirement to register in order to use this service … it’s anonymous and free to all burners. TalkSpace loads as a small ActiveX control in your browser. (A PC with IE 5.0 or higher is all you need … sorry Mac users.)

PEDAL REVOLUTION WANTS TO TAKE YOUR BIKES HOME

Hello Burners: We Need Your Old Burn Bikes.

Let me explain.

Pedal Revolution gets pretty busy this time of year with requests for Burning Man bikes. We build and sell as many as we can. This year, demand is outstripping supply. So here’s a plea:

If you’re not heading out to BRC this year, please consider donating your old Burn Bike to Pedal Rev. You’ll help us out, and help your fellow Burners, and get that unsightly (if sentimental) rusty bike out of your storage area.

We’re at 3085 21st Street in San Francisco, between South Van Ness and Shotwell. More information is here:
pedalrevolution.org. Or call 415 641 1264 if you have any questions.

Another idea if you ARE going to the Burn this year: if you’re wondering what to do with your bike when you get back from BRC to default reality, we’re happy to accept your dusted bike. Come see us and we’ll be sure to find it a new home.

Thanks! AGL

p.s. Pedal Revolution is a community-focused bicycle shop in the Mission District of San Francisco. Pedal Revolution provides employment, job training, and hope to young people who are taking steps to improve their lives. We are one of 3 businesses owned by Golden Gate Community, Inc., a nonprofit organization that seeks to transform the lives of at-risk youth.

“GIFTING IT” AND NEWBIE POTLUCK BBQ IN PORTLAND, OR, AUG 13TH

Experience The Art, The People, and The Community we gather to intentionally CREATE, together. And we are proud to present it as the last major pre-burn event in Portland. Since we felt that this film is a great introduction to the Burning Man Community and Culture, the screening will be proceeded by the First Annual Portland Regional Newbie Meet & Greet Pot Luck BBQ and Cocktail Hour(s). This is to encourage the newbies to come out, meet others, and see the film before we all head out to the desert.

Come meet other first time burners, meet grizzled (or grisly) veterans, ask questions, answer questions, get some great last minute tips and tricks, eat drink laugh and be merry and generally get your playa on. This may be your absolute last chance to ask those stupid questions you were afraid to post to the list, like the ever popular “do I really need to bring 2 gallons of water per person per day?” or the equally popular “do I really need to have , like, goggles out there?”

August 13th, 2003 (Wednesday): 5:00 pm: Laurelhurst Park – SE 39th & Stark, Portland, Or 97214, and we will be gathering by the lake.

9:00 pm : Hollywood Theater – Screening of the film “Gifting It”, some amazing local short subject films and trailers, and a silent auction on some really cool, fresh, and funky playa gear, and interesting random items that will appeal to the burner in all of us.

The theater is located on 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on the cross-streets of NE Broadway and 41st Avenue. Info on the theater is available at hollywoodtheatre.org/location

Tickets for the film are a suggested donation of from $5-$20 and are available at the door. The First Annual Portland Regional Newbie Pre-Burn Meet & Greet Pot Luck BBQ and Cocktail Hour(s) is free.

See you all there!

RENO WILD OATS

At the Reno Wild Oats, Burning Man Week is our busiest week of the year. We are making preparations to be sure we are well stocked on the key items for a week of healthy eating on the playa. We are a natural foods store specializing in organics. We have a wide selection of foods for special dietary needs, ie. vegan, vegetarian and gluten free diets, a bulk department, deli, juice bar and a water filling station. We also have a wide selection of natural remedies and skincare products such as sunscreen and Emergen-C.

This year we are going to make Burning Man week extra fun by giving away a brand new fat tire cruiser, donated by T-Rix bike shop. Stop by and put your name in to win. The week of August 24th has also been designated ‘Random Trivia Week” at Wild Oats. We will be randomly announcing Nevada related trivia over the intercom and giving away useful prizes for your excursion. So brush up on your Nevada trivia!

Wild Oats is located at 5695 S Virginia St Reno, NV 89502 (775) 829-8666. Directions from I-80. From I-80, catch the 395 South. Take 395 to the South Virginia/Kietzke exit. PLAYANECKLACE.COM

PlayaNecklace.com sells necklaces with the three playa essentials that are the most useful but the easiest to lose – a lighter, a flashlight, and lip balm – all in color-coordinated style on a beaded necklace. Playa Necklaces aren’t made by some big company – I’m a since-’97 burner and I make these at my kitchen table to help fund my own burn. I also give them away free on the playa. The necklaces are available with super-bright LED flashlights in a choice of colors. Check out playanecklace.com for pictures. Thanks!

DON’T FEAR THE REBAR

We always take a pick along to pull our rebar. If you have cleverly bent a 90 degree end on it (preventing pain filled shin encounters during drunken midnight stumbles) you just put the tip of the pick under the part of the stake that’s laying on the surface and lean back on the handle and out it pops. We hate those shin encounters and always bend our stakes, but, I’ve pulled other peoples straight rebar by wrapping a short piece of chain around it and hooking the tip of the pick under that.

AND

There is, of course, a much easier rebar puller than you’ve ever mentioned and it takes up much less valuable space than a truck jack and chain.

Just put a small piece of towel around the top of the rebar, clamp down on it with a pair of vise grips (extending out horizontally at the top of the rebar) and easily turn it a few times to the left or right while lightly pulling up. The fastest 12 inches you’ll find on the playa this year. Mother playa likes this one too. It leaves the least debris footprint of any technique we’ve seen here at Dusty Guru Laboratories.

-From the nice canadian boys who always show up with cheesecake and beer for the gatekeepers and built all the benches in the caf with She last year.

HOKEY SPOKES FOR BURNING FOLKS

Tired of those plain-old bike wheels? Falling short of the requisite 15 pieces of flair? Or just want a nifty way of saying “don’t run over my bike” on this year’s moonless playa? Hokey Spokes use synchronized colored LEDs to transmogrify your bike wheels into a funky-ass light show. With the programmable text option, your ride can even proudly proclaim “PIMP MOBILE” like you always knew it should. We’re a burner-owned and operated company, and put the disco back in discount by giving burners 20% off website orders until 15 Aug (basically when we head to the playa). Just mention Burning Man in the notes on your order (don’t forget!). Info and ordering at hokeyspokes.com.

COMMUNITY BIKES OFFERS PLAYA BIKES

Community Bikes, a project of The Middle Way (run by veteran burners), a non-profit based in Sebastopol, California, will be taking a truckload of bikes up to Burning Man.

Community Bikes trains developmentally delayed adults and teens in bike mechanics. Using these skills they find new employment opportunities. Bikes are donated, lovingly refurbished and returned to the community at low cost. Everyone wins!

Seeing a need for bikes delivered to the playa for people who don’t have one or can’t bring one, we hope to have up to 100 bikes available. For a donation of $75 plus any $ amount donation (suggested $25) to cover the truck expenses, you can have a bike brought to the playa.

At the end of Burning Man, If you don’t have the room, don’t want the bike at home, or just don’t want the hassle, you can donate it back as a tax deductible donation. Our clients will be grateful for the chance to clean it up and get it back into community use in Sonoma County. You do a good deed twice and have a “playa type” hassle- free bike experience at Burning Man.

To reserve a bike, email to: ackland. There is a limited supply.
