(AG Pre-ramble:

Before I pass the mic to Cabe, I just have to say: OH MY SWEET PLAYA I’M FINALLY HOME! This JRS comes to you from the Gerlach office, and I had to drive off the playa to post it (well, it took a few days) because I was so excited to tell you all how utterly beautiful it is to see BRC again. The DPW has been busting *arse* out here, and everything is coming along at a fantastic rate. I’m actually typing this on the playa as I look out across camp to the platform for the man. Just beyond it is David Best’s camp, and Saturday night for Surly Girl (this year’s Early Man burn for those who come early to build the city) the Lamplighters lit the Prominades (all four directions this year!) for the first time. Beautiful, beautiful!

The playa is awake and alive. Mars stares down at us every night as we stare back in awe. The last few days have been full of tackles and hugs and warm welcomes, and the dusty meal I made that first day was about the tastiest thing I had ever eaten.

It’s that time, too: please note that if you’ve been emailing this week or last trying to get into a volunteer role or otherwise needing assistance, the staff are almost all on-playa at this point and most people’s access to email is limited or nonexistent. Please come on over to Playa Info if you’d like to connect with a department as a volunteer – they always have plenty of fun things to do in BRC.

So now all we need is a few more days to finish this puppy, and then we’ll be ready to welcome YOU. So come home!

The Jack Rabbit herself will be posting another JRS shortly, full of bits and pieces from her 2-weeks-on-the-playa brain. Cabe will take us into this week’s news: )

Today’s JRS contains a boatload of information about CARS. And trucks. And vans. Unless you are among the hundred or so people who will be flying, gliding, parachuting or otherwise descending into BRC’s airport from the so-called “heavens” – PLEASE READ THE CAR SECTION. It contains important information on driving into the event, driving out of the event, and most importantly the fact that there’s NO DRIVING at the event unless you are in a registered Art Car. Renting from Budget or Ryder? Read it. Driving in from the east, or the west? Read it. Basically, unless there’s a big S on your chest and a red cape on your back, read it.

Then keep on going to the fun stuff: PARTICIPATE today by downloading your music for the HEARTBEAT OF THE MAN; find your TORCH, KITE, PIE, and GALACTIC SIGNATURE, and print out the PLAYA COOKBOOK compiled by the Santa Cruz regional. Make plans to see anything you missed at the Reno AFTERBURN festival on September 5th… or plan to relive 2001’s burn through the eyes of four participants in the film “Confessions of a Burning Man”, opening September 12 in San Francisco.

Enough. The man burns in 11 days – on with the show!

PLAYA INFO: YOUR ONE-STOP INFORMATION SHOP

Playa Info, located under the blue “i” at Center Camp, is the central point for getting and distributing information, for leaving Burning Bell messages for Black Rock citizens, and for finding friends’ camps at Directory. Daily volunteer opportunities across the city are posted here. You can also find out about and post daily events on the bulletin boards.

With the revamped Digital Directory, you can register your campsite or theme camp, letting your friends know your exact Black Rock City address, and instantly send messages to your BRC buddies. Directory information and messaging is accessible via terminals at Playa Info and at any PlayaNet kiosk.

Do you want extra attention on the playa? Use the Dynamic Board at Playa Info to pinpoint exactly where your camp is located for friends and family to find you. Come prepared with a push pin and a tag of paper with your camp name on it to press into the cork board representation of Black Rock City.

GOT LNT?

Then nominate your camp for Earth Guardians LNT Camp of the Day.

Each day our judges visit and view model camps and select the theme camp that best exemplifies Leave No Trace practices at Burning Man. Winners are awarded two free tickets to next year’s event and recognition in community media. Any theme camp can nominate itself by signing up at the Earth Guardians Pavilion during the event.

Last year’s winners were Om Bayou (returning this year as Shambala Mythical Critter Rodeo and Mental State Fair), Poly Paradise (returning as part of Shangri-La Village), Heart Waves (mostly first timers, including this year’s Queen Radia’s Folding Camp), and Borrachos y Bicicletas.

Want to see more? At the Earth Guardians Pavilion you can stroll though our Black Rock walk, which includes information on LNT tips and techniques and features a map of our second annual Leave No Trace Tour of the City. The Tour features working examples of LNT. This year camps will be demonstrating various gray water systems, trash management, showers, reusable structures, and “Good Neighbor” camping practices. The Tour is an experiment from which we learn and share our experiences: earthguardians.burningman.com/tips.html

LNT is really a way to camp smarter, not harder, on the playa. So check out the LNT Tour model camps. And if you already got LNT, nominate your camp for the coveted Camp of the Day award.

BLACK ROCK HOSTEL AND RIDESHARESHEEELLLPP!!

Fred Hagemeister is the incredibly generous organizer of the Black Rock Hostel (which helps burners from around the world get from Reno to the playa, and gives them a place to stay if they land or leave at 4 a.m.) Unfortunately, Fred’s PC was just taken down by a bad virus. He was offline and in tears because of so many people relying on him and the playa hostel/rideshare team to get people to the playa.

As it stood, Fred was starting to fear he had more people wanting rides than people offering rides. His PC is back up and running, so communications should be in order, but he REALLY needs burners passing through Reno/Sparks to help him and BRC out by stopping by to pick up rideshare seekers. If you have a spare square foot of room in your car for a wayward burner to hitch a ride, PLEASE stop by Fred’s place and pick up a new friend for the rest of the 2-hour drive to the playa. You don’t have to call ahead, just come by – there are always burners awaiting a seat. Directions are below.

If you have made arrangements for a ride with Fred please be advised that unless you hear otherwise from Fred – he is probably **NOT** able to pick you up at the airport. He asks that you take a taxi to his place in Sparks. This will cost you about 17 dollars. From there he will be able to organize the rideshare.

Sometimes at the airport you can spot other burners who might be renting a car and have space to share a ride. We know of folks who have gotten here this way, so look around when you land for other excited faces.

PLEASE FORWARD this far and wide to anyone you know that may be using the rideshare or hostel.

Fred’s Number is 1-775-358-5080
his address:
1350 Breaker Way in Sparks

DIRECTIONS:

I-80 through Sparks:

Take McCarran Bld exit and turn LEFT(NORTH) at the light.
Head north on McCarran through four lights to Greenbrae, and then turn LEFT.
A few blocks later is another LEFT, on Breaker.

Burn On!

A QUICK NOTE ABOUT DRIVING IN BLACK ROCK CITY.

Please remember: There is no driving in Black Rock City.

Once you make it to your camp, please leave your vehicle parked there.

And even though you may be anxious to reach your camp when you first arrive, please drive there slowly (no dust).

HOW ABOUT ART CARS?

Art cars are allowed to drive in Black Rock City.

All art cars must be licensed, and all must be displaying a sticker from the DMV, before driving around Black Rock City. The DMV is behind Playa Info in Center Camp. Hours are M-F 10AM-10PM, Sat 10AM-4PM.

WHAT ROADS ARE OFF-LIMITS?

There is no driving at all on the first two roads in our city, even for art cars .

There is no vehicle traffic (even art cars) on the Esplanade.

And there is no vehicle traffic (even art cars) on Authority.

These roads are for pedestrians and bikes only.

DRIVING IN CENTER CAMP.

There is no driving in center camp. Center camp is for pedestrians and bikes. However, the only exception is for art cars.

Art cars are allowed to drive in center camp ONLY if they enter from the playa, through the keyhole.

And only if it is safe to do so.

If there are too many people milling around center camp, or if there are too many art cars already in center camp, then they should not enter.

Basically, if it constitutes a danger, they should not be there.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DRIVE IN BLACK ROCK CITY?

slowly! (no dust)

thanks

CHECK YOUR BUDGET/RYDER VAN/TRUCK RESERVATIONS

We have heard reports of reservations being cancelled for cargo vans from Budget/Ryder, specifically because they were going to Burning Man. You might want to reconfirm your reservation, and/or make alternate plans.

You will probably call attention to yourself if you say “I’m calling to make sure I can still take your van to Burning Man.” Remember, you’re under no obligation to volunteer where you’re taking the van. And PLEASE, if you do get a van, return it clean! You’ll make it easier for the burner who wants to rent it next year.

COMING FROM THE EAST? POSSIBLE ALL STOP OFF I-80

“Take the Highway Dave” writes: I just thought I would pass on this advice. There is a small back road from Winnemucca to Gerlach. It shows up on some maps of Nevada, but even some of the locals in Winnemucca don’t know about it. The road is barely marked and looks like it can save you several hours in driving time if you are coming from the east. DO NOT TAKE THIS ROAD. Many places in the road have large pointy stones and boulders covering the road for miles on end. You will get a flat tire or two or three. I have taken this road and we passed by so many drivers that had flats it was almost funny. Then in the space of 10 seconds I got two flats. Only take this road if you have an off-road vehicle with a spare and a patch kit and an inflater. Even then you are running a big risk. The BLM only patrols that road once per week and it is a long hot walk. Lucky for us the wonderful BLM Ranger Lynn Miracle came driving up behind us two minutes after our flats and helped us out. You may not be as lucky!

*<>/**<>/ **<>/**<>/ **<>/**<>/ **<>/**<>/ *

IF YOU MUST GO, DO IT QUICKLY

Hey burners! The Exodus crew has a reminder for you as you head up to the playa.

The traffic jam in Gerlach last year was very frustrating. To help avoid this, if you plan on leaving on Sunday or Monday, plan on stopping for fuel and supplies in Gerlach on your way *to* Burning Man, and not on the way out. This will help us all have a safer and more pleasant ride home.

thanks, and safe travels your Exodus crew

ART CARS MAKE GOOD INSTALLATIONS

Kiki writes with words of wisdom: “If your art car is turned down for a license, don’t despair! Your car is still art! Park it prominently and proudly in front of your camp where people can enjoy it! Then catch a ride on another art car. Don’t forget the drivers like water, snacks, and gifts too!”

BE NICE TO THE POETIC LICENSERS

Hey there, fellow burners, the Department of Mutant Vehicles (DMV) is in need of some material donations so we can make our “office” super special when the Art Cars roll in. Our theme colors this year are Red and Gold, so if anyone has any red or gold supplies handy, please let us know! This could be: spray paint, old Christmas garland, Fabric, other Paints, fuzzy dice, robin breasts, poster board, nail polish, marabou ;O), etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

We are also looking for Arms!!! If you have any spare arms: doll arms, chair arms, taxidermed arms, etc. etc., then please LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS!!! We are trying to have many many arms about the office. The said arms will be holding our next Donation Request:

Tchotchkes!!! We need small, playa-friendly (i.e. destroyable) trinkets to glue into the hands of the said Arms. Anything at all, even Barney the Dinosaur, as long as he’ll accept a good gluin’!!! Toy Cars are especially needed!

In other news, we will need some lucky few Bay Area folks to help out with some painting for the decorative background action. It should be a weeknight or two, possibly a weekend thing, we’ll see. Not too many hours involved though. Please contact me if you want to help.

xoxoxoxoxoxoxo ‘n’ Thanks!

HEARTBEAT OF THE MAN MUSIC AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

Greetings from Matty and The Mutaytor.

The music for our Burning Man 2003 project “The Heartbeat Of The Man” is up, and available for free download. (The “Heartbeat of the Man” project is an effort to have every single participant contribute to the Saturday night burn ceremony by playing a heartbeat rhythm on a drum, shaker, rattler, tin cup or other noisemaker.) We would love you to have a copy! It can be found on our homepage at www.mutaytor.com – click on the lower right hand side of the page where it says Burning Man 2003 Heartbeat of The Man. On the top of the Heartbeat page, you’ll find a link to the music downloads. (They are large files, 19 MB and 12 MB, so don’t try this over a phone line!) If you can burn them to a CD, they also make for great driving music.

Please pass the word along, and we can’t wait to play with you on the playa!

PLAYA RECIPES AND COOKING TIPS ONLINE

Man cannot live on Pop Tarts alone and burners have proven to be a resourceful group when it comes to desert cooking. The regional coordinators for Santa Cruz, California have compiled dozens of tasty recipes submitted by fellow burners that are easy to fix or can be prepared in advance of leaving for the playa. To see what’s cookin’, go to burningbeach.com and click on the Playa Recipes link.

THE BIGGEST PROCESSION OF ALL–JOIN THE WHEEL OF FIRE

The Wheel of Fire Organizers want you!

On Burn night, gather around your nearest Community Burn Platform out on the Esplanade. At 8:00 PM some fireworks go up from the Man. This is the signal to start the processions. As you file past your neighborhood burn platform, light up your torches from the Holy Fire there… or just switch on your flashlight as you pass that point.

Start parading toward the Man with your torches, fire, lights, drums. These simultaneous torchlight processions coming in from all directions will form the spokes of an enormous flaming wheel nearly a mile in diameter, clearly visible from space.

Plus, by being smart and joining the Procession, you arrive out there ahead of other people and get a really good seat to the Burn. You will have about a 1/2 hour before the main events begin, to drum, whoop it up, or participate in other events like the Heartbeat of the Man…

To find out how to make a really cool parade torch, or to sponsor a burn platform and lead a Procession go to clevian.com/wheel.htm

Thanks everyone, with your help it will be the best Burn ever. signed,
THE WHEEL OF FIRE PROJECT

BEYOND BANNER ADS AND WIRES

As in previous years, the Oregon Country Fair Embassy will provide Internet access in Black Rock City via an 802.11b wireless network. We are pleased to have the opportunity to do this again. We’ve also had great success and fun using the equipment at the Oregon Contry Fair. All you need is a computer and a wireless card to get connected using the SSID “internet”.

This year you can go beyond banner ads, if you set your proxy to bmserv.ibm.toad.com port 8080. Details can be found at eugeneweb.com/~bm/ibm.html or visit us at “The Embassy” theme camp at 7:00 and Esplanade.

HUMAN TZOLKIN @ BRC2K3

This year at Beyond Belief, we are pulling together something that has NEVER been done before. (Fancy that!) You can be a part of this epic event/ritual called The Human Tzolkin (pronounced zhol’kin).

Instead of just 12 signs like the western Zodiac, there are 260 different signs, or Galactic Signatures in the Dreamspell Mayan Calendar. So we want to gather one person to represent each signature and do a little ritual. It’ll only take about a half hour. Thursday afternoon @ 4PM near the man. That’s a lot of cool people! But first you hafta find out what your galactic signature is!

Wanna Participate? Easy! Just go to galactichardware.com and click to the Burning Man Link for all the info you will need.

This has NEVER been done before. At least as far as well know. You can be a part of this epic event and help make history!

Once you are on the playa; there will be a signature decoding station@ Literal and Dogma near the WooNami Village. or email burn

No, this isn’t the man, it’s a Tzolkin!

DEPARTMENT OF TETHERED AVIATION WANTS YOU TO GO FLY A KITE

The Black Rock City Department of Tethered Aviation would like to remind all burners to bring your kites to Burning Man.

The 3rd Annual Black Rock City International Kite Festival will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2003. We will be flying on the Playa starting at 4:20 Thursday afternoon.

The kite festival is getting larger every year and we are closing in on that elusive North American record for largest number of kites in the air at the same time.

In order to facilitate our count this year we are asking all participants to drop by the Department of Tethered Aviation to register and pick up your official Playa Kite Pilot’s license. The BRCDTA is located at Literal & Esplanade. If you don’t get a chance to register at our camp during the week, you can register at the white BRCDTA van on the Playa during the festival.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on the Playa Thursday afternoon. Smooth Wind!

MARS: THE MUSICAL

Priests of Mars and Quirinus were called Salii (“jumpers”). They were referred to as jumpers because they jumped down streets and sang the Carmen Saliare. A priest of Mars alone was called a flamen Martialis. How Burning Man is that?

So… maybe on August 27 at exactly 3:51 a.m. playa time (when Mars is closer to the earth than it has been in 60,000 years). We could be Salii and jump down our streets singing the Carmen Saliare which goes a little bit like this:

<<divum empta cante, divum deo supplicate, cume tonas, Leucesie, prae tet tremonti quot ibet etinei de is cum tonarem cozeulodorieso. omnia vero adpatula coemisse. ian cusianes duonus ceruses dunus Ianusve vet pom melios eum recum>>

While parts of this text seem to mention thunder, and Janus, and perhaps Ceres, the rest of the text is quite obscure.

By the way, I got this info at wikipedia.org…Mavors

GIGSVILLE, NOW WITH PIE-RAIDS

Girlie writes with news of: The Semi-Annual Gigsville Half-Assed Revolutionary Doomocratic Pie-Raid.

Otherwise known as ** The Gigsville Pie-Raid **

otherwise know as “the parade”, for those of you who didn’t get that. 🙂

Thursday, Aug. 28th, 5pm or so, Gigsville stage. Bring out your instruments, your noise-makers, your costumes, your giant balloon animals, your pie forks, your wagons, your flags and, most importantly, your enthusiasm.

We will parade and pie-raid through the backstreets of Black Rock City. Bringing laughter and chaos and fuckoism to the great unwashed masses. We will make music and mayhem and ungodly noise. We will raid for pies and will not rest until we find some (or at least one!).

Pie holders of Black Rock beware… Gigsville is coming.

ROPES WITH SNAPS

Jim writes: “I’m in Chicago at a hardware show and I found some great rubber/nylon stretch tie-downs that are better than bungees and may replace ropes to secure structures in the wind. I will be bringing some prototypes to test, but the company has a limited number of a new 15′ adjustable with a quick release clip that can be used to secure stuff on the top of cars and from tent stakes/rebar to the top of a structure. The guy who developed these is from Australia and he is loading a BRC special on his website tomorrow where we can buy 2 15′ adjustables for $20 and they will be sent from New York. Usually they are only sold to distributors or stores. I will be bringing at least 4 for use on a structure at mecca shiva and he will accept orders for BRC until Monday the 18th from his website. The address for the burners special is: rokstraps.com/rokshop_brc.html

The great thing about these is that they have a quick release so that when you are ready to break down a shade structure you don’t have to deal with knotted ropes or pulling against the structure. You just snap the release and they come apart.

TAKE ONE DOWN, BOUNCE IT AROUND

Garlynn writes: I just wanted to send a quite note to other burners that, if they want to drink beer on the playa and they don’t want to drink it out of a can, Anchor Steam Brewery in San Francisco sells plastic bottles of Anchor Steam Beer by the case at the brewery. I believe that the brewery is the only source for these bottles, and I’m pretty sure they’re only open 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. However, it’s worth the effort to go to the brewery to pick up these amazing plastic bottles of beer. I took one case last year, and am planning to take two this year. The taste of the beer is the same as if it were served out of a glass bottle, but the plastic bottles don’t break — they bounce!
The brewery deets are:

Anchor Brewing Company, 1705 Mariposa Street, San Francisco, CA 94107
Tel 415-863-8350
anchorbrewing.com

I have no affiliation with the brewery and doubt they give Burning Man discounts, but they’re pretty nice so it can’t hurt to ask!

[Rabbit note: the nice thing about aluminum cans is that you can turn them in for recycling right on the playa, in Center Camp at (where else) Recycle Camp. Each year the proceeds from can recycling generate hundreds of dollars, all of which goes to Gerlach area schools.]
