Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 8, Issue 16
February 12, 2004

Zowie – two rabbits offline for a few weeks, and now the BM year is off to a breakneck start! We have a theme, we have ticket sales announced… it feels like any minute now we’ll be telling you what roads you should and shouldn’t use as shortcuts across the Nevada desert.

Maybe it’s just the cold weather here in New York, or Marian’s note in the last JRS of how many days until the Man burns – or maybe the fact that we reached the tipping point of having more posts about the 2004 event than requests for pics of the 2003 event. Whatever the reason, it feels to this rabbit like BM 2004 has gone from “distant event it’s fun to think about” to “upcoming event it’s time to start pulling together a camp for.” And that’s GOOD. In the middle of a dark urban February, it’s nothing short of fabulous to be able to envision dancing outside on a hot lake bed in our next version of Black Rock City. (Version 19.0, for those keeping track at home.)

Read this week’s newsletter to find out how you can fly over Black Rock City today, snag a burn barrel for your camp this week, and catch a new Burning Man movie in your hometown this Spring.

A note from the crew in SF: The start date for ticket sales has confused a couple of folks. To clarify, “Midnight on March 1” means 12:00 AM, the start of the day on that date. Wouldn’t want to leave anyone in the dark…

The Man burns in 204 days – no time like the present to find your flame!

-Cabe

WASHOE COUNTY SPECIAL USE PERMITS APPROVED

The staging and planning areas in Nevada where we build Black Rock City year-round are going strong. Eric Close writes:

Good News Everyone,

The Washoe County Planning Commission approved both of our Special Use Permit applications tonight with a unanimous vote. We still have a lot of work left to do, but it looks promising this time. Thanks to all who helped and supported!

SHARE THE LOVE (AND THE RENT)

Currently, the Burning Man Project administrative activities occupy 10,000 square foot of office space in San Francisco. We ended up with a great deal for the space after the fallout from the DotCom industry. We have the entire second floor of a two story building past the ballpark off of 3rd St. The tenant downstairs is being evicted, and we’ve been offered the space below also. We don’t need the entire 10,000 sq. ft. 1/2 of which is a wood-working paint shop fully permitted with hoods, fans, etc. The rest is enclosed office space. We are interested in using the space, but would only be able to do so if other like-minded people/groups are interested in some of the space. We’re not looking for a LOT of tenants, just a few. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, let us know. Please send an email to jackrabbitspeaks with OFFICE SPACE in the subject line. If you just hit reply with the current header we may not respond as quickly. THANKS.

PLAYA SIMULATOR

Check out this great article on burner Andrew Johnstone, who has built a Black Rock City module for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Now you can fly around town without having to win a raffle – and leave your painstakingly built camp up all year for others to buzz by.

FLIGHT REALITY

A group of skydivers created a great video of their jump over Black Rock City on Wednesday late afternoon at the 2003 event. Big file (which you click on to download after getting to the page) but worth checking out!

—If you could put out on the List that i am seeking any footage of Justice, the fire-breathing motorcycle dragon… pureeviltm.com/justice – I’d appreciate it! I was invited to participate in a Discovery Channel shoot and i am lacking footage and pix of my beastie for this project… and any others. Grazi! amacker [galadriel]

—In 2002 I made art called ‘for sale’ of george bush standing in the center of a cicle of american flags with the stars replaced with logos of corporations he’s sold our rights to. Anyways, I’m looking for video footage of my art… with or without people in it. Could you ask in your next letter? Thanks much, sarah (the gal ‘greening’ bm in 2004). Xx sarahhaynesx

TEXAS REGIONALS ARE GROWING

Attention Dallas, TX area! Our North Texas community of burners has been growing fast over the past few years, in large part due to the Texas regional event Flipside, yet we believe there are many unfound burners in the DFW metroplex. This area is so spread out, both physically and culturally that we are seeking ways to find the lost. We are calling out to those burners to find us on our mailing lists! Also, if you know of burners in the North Texas area, refer them to us! We have two regionals at this time, Dallas and Denton (university town 40mi. north of DFW). Here are our mailing lists, both announce and discussion lists: To subscribe send a blank e-mail to:

FREE BURN BARRELS

Jerry/Six writes: I have about 35 steel 55-gallon barrels (with lids & lid clamps/seals) available to Burners. Deviant has just signed a new lease at a larger and much nicer facility and we DON’T WANT TO MOVE EMPTY BARRELS! I usually sell them for $20 each (with discounts if people buy several of them) and I apply the money towards supporting our Liquid Latex Lounge theme camp, which has operated for 5 years now. During our move, WE’RE GIVING AWAY THE BARRELS FOR FREE (or you can trade something nice if you want, or you can still donate to our BM fund, too, if you really want). They’re located in Downtown San Jose and were originally used to store Deviant Liquid Latex (www.DeviantLatex.com). They have a thin residue of latex on the inside (non-toxic, non-reactive) which is easlily peeled out, leaving them in like-new condition. They’re great for burn barrels, water transport/storage, weather-proof backyard storage of BM items during the off season (they seal air-tight), and many other uses. Contact me at Jerry or call my direct office line at 408.971.6339.

FRIDAY THE 13th BENEFIT FOR MADAGASCAR INSTITUTE SF CA

SomArts
934 Brannan Street
San Francisco

9:00pm-5:00am

This benefit will help get Chris Hackett, founder of the seminal Madagascar Institute, back on his feet after a terrible accident with a piece of art in Brooklyn. Madagascar provides both venue and instruction for much of the fire art that makes it from NYC to Burning Man, and the Bay Area has a unique chance this weekend to come support Madagascar and Hackett. BM denizens Stephen Ra$pa, ZeroBoy, Laird, ShapeShifter, Space Cowboys and others will be on hand to make this a great night.

LUNA SEA IN HAWAII MARCH 5-7

Luna Sea
Our first Living Art Experiment of 2004
A celebration of the Moon, the Sea, and everything Pisces.

We will be at the usual spot at Makua beach from Friday, March 5th to Sunday, March 7th. Every year we base our themes on the current Burning Man theme, this year it is “The Vault of Heaven”. So our 2004 Living Art Experiments are going to be a bit more “celestial”, with some local spice mixed in. Luna Sea is free, but it is Participant-only. That means everyone who comes is expected to contribute along the lines of the theme, all the information you need is at: kapilina.org…event008.html. There are a lot of things we need help with, and if you would like to volunteer, get the details on the website and then contact us.

Have any ideas or suggestions? Post it on the discussion list (kapilina_discussion_list).
