Howdy!

Well, the BLM came out and did their annual Fall inspection of the Black Rock Desert the other day, looking for remaining traces of Black Rock City. We’re happy to report that we not only passed the inspection, we did so with flying colors. We’ve posted this year’s MOOP map (GREEN! Look at all that green!) in the Environment section:

http://www.burningman.com/environment/playa_restoration/2009_moop_map.html

We’ve blogged about it too, with some additional info from Tony “Coyote” Perez.

http://blog.burningman.com/?p=5796

We should all be proud … great work everybody, especially the Playa Restoration Crew (who, if we were ALL *really* doing this right, wouldn’t have work to do out there, but hey, y’all did pretty damn good). If you want to thank them, please feel free to do so by leaving a comment there on the blog – and while you’re at it, commit to do your 2 hours’ MOOP duty outside your own camp next year and leave them with nothing to do in 2010.

You can also find MOOP Maps from 2006 to the present in the Burning Man website’s Environment section, here:

Back in the real world, BRAF is starting up its art grant cycle, funding artwork around the world. Burners Without Borders is cranking away down in Peru and over in Samoa, and is looking for people to help out with a cool biodiesel project. Black Rock Solar is hard at work on an exciting project in Reno (we’ll tell you about that one once they’ve finished it up). Point is, our people are all over the place, making cool things happen, year round. We hope you’re doing the same in your community.

And we hope everybody’s doing well out there.

SKILLED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN PERU TO HEAD UP BIODIESEL REACTOR PROJECT

Many of you may know of the work Burners Without Borders did last year rebuilding the town of Pisco, Peru, devastated after an earthquake. Our efforts not only provided over 54,000 gifted labor hours but led local Peruvian Harold Zevallos to start his own volunteer organization, Pisco Sin Fronteras (PSF). Now, BWB and PSF are partnering to create sustainable funding for schools and homes for years to come with the Biodiesel Reactor Project.

Production has begun on the waste veggie oil to biodiesel reactor and we are in need of volunteers to operate both the reactor and help to grow the business model that will create a successful program.

BWB is looking for the right people to help expand this project into a model of sustainable reconstruction and local empowerment that can be used in future disasters around the world. To take a look at the job description and find out how you can get involved, please visit:

http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org

BWB Deployment to Samoa

BWB volunteers are currently on their way to the Samoa Islands to assess a possible volunteer deployment there after a devastating tsunami wiped away entire villages. If you think you might be interested in volunteering, please e-mail projects (at) burnerswithoutborders (dot) org. Please be sure check the BWB website for updates on our assessment in the weeks ahead.

RENO RECYCLING PROJECT DONATION TO BLACK ROCK SOLAR

The total amount to be donated to Black Rock Solar from the Reno Recycling Project was $1380 — $1000 from Whole Foods and $380 from Save Mart, who, by the way, also donated matching funds in this whole process.

Thanks to all Burning Man participants who brought their recycling to these locations so Black Rock Solar could reap the benefits!

BURNING MAN FEATURED IN NATURE MAGAZINE

Here’s a PDF of a cool article about Burning Man titled “A Creative Celebration of Evolution,” recently published in Nature Magazine. Thanks to Jason Hodin (an evolutionary biologist at Stanford University who co-authored the piece) for sending it along!

FLAMING LOTUS GIRLS: OPERATION SPARKLE POOF RECOVERY!

Thanks to everyone who came out to Soma this year to enjoy its light and fire and support the Flaming Lotus Girls. We do what we do because of all of you! This year, we had an extra-special addition to our fire repertoire: the sparkle poof. The sparkle poofs are propane-fueled, titanium-injected poofers that so many of you got to fire off by pushing those wonderful bronze buttons on the legs of the lower cell body of Soma.

Each sparkle poof fixture was hand-crafted out of stainless steel and copper, carefully wrought into flaring petals shooting out from the upper cell body. Like all the aspects of our work, much time, energy, expense and love went into their creation.

Sadly, one of these sparkle poof fixtures was taken from the playa.

You can see some images of the sparkle poofs here on our blog:

http://bit.ly/gJ7Mi

On Monday evening, the day the event closed, these fixtures were placed next to our container. They were to be loaded up with all the other bits and bobs of Soma on Tuesday morning for transport back to San Francisco. Much to our dismay, one of these beautiful fixtures was missing when we returned to our site for packing. It seems someone ‘borrowed’ a sparkle poof for themselves.

We are putting a call out to try to recover this essential piece of Soma. She’s just not complete without it. In order to run the sparkle poofs, we’ll have to make another fixture – an endeavor which requires even more time, energy, expense and love, all of which we’re currently expending on other upcoming projects and events.

The art people create for the playa isn’t meant to be a souvenir. It is meant to have a life beyond the desert where people around the globe can explore and appreciate the experience of participatory art in their own backyards, having their minds blown by the power of creativity just like we get to at Burning Man. Soma is no different.

If you have any knowledge of where our little sparkle poof may have landed, please email info (at) flaminglotus (dot) comand put SPARKLE POOF in the subject line. We’re not interested in blame or shame or anything of the sort. We can even arrange to have her delivered to a neutral location. Or, she can be mailed to the following address, no questions asked:

Flaming Lotus Girls
548 Precita Ave.
San Francisco, CA 94110

We’d just like her back. As soon as we can get her. Thank you!

BEIGNET CHEF DONATES CASH MONEY TO BRAF

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is happy to accept a generous donation from Chef FriedDough, who sold fabulous beignets at SF Decompression. (And we think this is a very. cool. thing.) Anyway, he wants to thank you. So, here he is:

“To Burners & Friends Attending Bay Area Decompression:

Hi it’s me, Playa Beignet Chef FriedDough. Y’all munched hundreds of Beignets for BRAF. Due to your fondness for hot, fresh Cajun donuts, you helped raise over $1,800.00 that will now go to support community based art.

Good for you! Thank you, thank you, thank you & thank you. I am so very proud of this community and it was my total honor to serve beignets to y’all all day & into the evening.

Next time any of you are at the Cafe du Monde on Decateur St, please share with them you ate beignets back here and they were “Almost as good as the Cafe du Monde.”

See ya next year & look for us in Black Rock City. Peace n love, Chef FriedDough.”

SEEKING VIDEO OF THE PLAYA CHOIR

Liea writes:

“Hi, My name is Liea and I was a part of the Playa Choir this year. This was my first year and being a part of the choir was truly an evolutionary experience for me. I would love any video or audio recordings of the service we did on Sunday morning. I would LOVE to be able to share the experience with my friends and family here in the default world as well as have reminder of the experience.

You can reach me at: idaxion (at) gmail (dot) com or 901-214-5817.

Thank you all for burning on!! Liea”

SEEKING PHOTOS OF THE SILVER UMBRELLA WITH MIRROR MOBILE

Little help for Meredyth? She writes to ask:

“I worked for months on creating this beautiful silver umbrella that had no shade. Hanging from the skeleton of the frame I made a mobile of mirrors. It was an ‘un’brella that reflected light. It was my opus that I had had in my mind for 7 years. Additionally it was my birthday gift to myself (Sep. 4th). Words can’t do justice to this artwork.

Unfortunately the camera that we used to document this piece was destroyed and I have nothing but the memory. I know for a fact that there were a number of people that took my picture and I would do anything to have one single image of this, the highlight of my first Burning Man experience.

Can you help?

Thanks, Meredyth”

TOM KENNEDY FUNDRAISER FOR THE RIPPER JOURNEY FOUNDATION – OCT 28-NOV 12

Friends and family of the legendary San Francisco artist Tom Kennedy will host a three-part benefit and art auction to benefit the Ripper Journey Foundation beginning October 28 and running through November 12 at the Jellyfish Gallery in San Francisco. The public is invited to participate and attend free of charge.

Tom Kennedy passed away April 12, 2009 while body-surfing off Ocean Beach in San Francisco. He left behind a legacy as a pioneering sculptural artist, social agitator and builder of more than twenty art cars. As a founding member of the art car movement, his works of art work evolved into symbols of political protest and peace keeping. Tom envisioned his beloved and most recognized art car, Ripper the Friendly Shark, traveling around the world with a crew called the Friend Patrol. Together they would inspire and support friendship and peace in conflict zones where people perceived as enemies live and work together. The art auction will raise money to send Ripper the Friendly Shark on this mission at least once a year.

The three-part fundraiser will kick off on October 28 with a silent auction and live performances and wrap up on November 12 with a live auction. An ever-growing list of artists have donated artwork to be auctioned with all proceeds to benefit the Ripper Journey Foundation.

Featured artists include Tom Kennedy, Haideen Anderson, Margot Duane, Karen Cusolito, Michael Christian, Brian Goggin, Dan Das Mann, Jon Alloway, Philo Northup, Kal Spelletich, Chelsea Owens, Brettt Roncelli, Deirdre DeFranceaux, Harrod Blank, Justin Credible, Justin Young, Tony Campanale and many more.

The event will also showcase photos, art and videos about Tom Kennedy and the Ripper Journey Foundation created in his memory. All pieces in the silent auction will also be online at:

About Ripper Journey Foundation
The Ripper Journey Foundation was created by the friends and family of Tom Kennedy to make his dream come true: to send his first art car Ripper the Friendly Shark around the world inspiring and supporting friendship and peace. By raising money the Foundation will make it possible for the Friend Patrol to accompany Ripper the Friendly Shark on at least one journey per year to conflict zones where people perceived as enemies live and work together in the name of friendship and peace. PATRICK RODDIE’S PHOTO GALLERY FROM BURNING MAN 2009

Patrick Roddie’s 12th straight year of Burning Man pictures have been posted. And they are, as usual, absolutely stunning. Our personal favorite is the shot of the guy cooking pancakes on the smoldering embers of the Man. Here’s the gallery:
