Can it be six months until Black Rock City?

Hi again – me again, or nice to meet you, for you new subscribers…Andie Grace here with the latest and greatest info for you from BMHQ for planning your countdown to the burn. We just checked and found out this list has more than 98,000 subscribers to date, which made me just a little dizzy, actually. So many! Hi! Where ya from? Come here often?

Valentine’s Day, and the Fourth Annual Burning Man Regional Network Leadership Summit are at hand, in that order, and then it’ll be spring, pretty much, and you know how fast things go after that…

Or maybe you don’t, so let me tell you! March 6 is the Burnal Equinox event – meaning we are halfway to Burning Man, so you won’t be holding your breath for too much longer. The rest of the planning season tends to fly by, and then suddenly you’re in the desert.

And we all know Burning Man is not just a week in the desert anyway – why wait when you could be soaking in it? Interesting factoid: there are now 165 Burning Man Regional Contacts in 89 locations around the globe, which is to say, probably a group close to you right now – checked lately? http://regionals.burningman.com.

Next month, many of those volunteers and other invited guest leadership from local communities will be converging on San Francisco to participate in the fourth annual Leadership Summit. In previous years, this workshop/collaboration/presentation weekend has been a huge success bringing bright Burning Man minds together — and this year we’ve invited even more local arts groups, staff, volunteers, theme camps, and crazy project-minded creative people to join us in welcoming and networking with this incredible crew of hardworking volunteers. We’ll be sure to send you a full report!

And all of you with cool projects, ideas, camps, and proposals – listen up. First, the Art Grant app just closed…and holy cannoli, you guys submitted 266 applications this year (up from 220 in 2009!)!

Next, the DMV, Art Placement, Camp Placement, Media Project registrations are all about to launch this month…remember some of those are HOT deadlines (Placement deadline moves UP this year to April 29! Get your camp meetings rolling, gang!). We don’t want you to miss anything. We really don’t.

Last thing … if you haven’t lately, do check out the Burning Blog …, including this awesome radio story from BBC Radio 1:

ECSTASY IN SAN FRANCISCO

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is proud to support the installation of Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito’s sculpture Ecstasy at Patricia’s Green in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. This hopeful, figurative work will be on display, free to the public, from February 7, 2010 till June 18, 2010.

First displayed at the Burning Man festival in Nevada in 2008, Ecstasy is one of the eight monumental metal figures of the artists’ masterpiece, Crude Awakening. In Crude Awakening, these eight figures surrounded a 99-foot tall wooden oil derrick in gestures of prostration, worship and exaltation. Alone, Ecstasy embarks on a hopeful journey. Instead of throwing her head back in reverie to the oil derrick, she gazes wistfully into the open sky as she steps forward into an optimistic future, free of dependency on fossil fuel.

Through our Civic Arts Program, BRAF is pleased to further the evolution of this artwork’s message by exposing it to a new audience and community, and to return to the site of Patricia’s Green. In 2005, this location became of the site of BRAF’s first public art project. Working closely with the residents and business owners of the Hayes Valley neighborhood, BRAF established a model of community collaboration towards the curation and installation of public art.

These community members continued to work on bringing art into their neighborhood, forming the Hayes Valley Arts Coalition. The installation of Ecstasy at Patricia’s Green further affirms the success of this collaboration, and of the model of public, temporary art installation.

Join us in celebration of Ecstasy at the opening reception:

February 26, 2010
Patricia’s Green
at Octavia and Hayes Streets
San Francisco, CA
4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

TIME LOVE MEMORY

[Time Love Memory] was an art installation at Burning Man 2009 by Stefano Corazza. It was the representation of the talking typewriter with a beetle’s head in David Cronenberg’s movie Naked Lunch, inspired by the William S. Burroughs famous novel. While the typewriter was the way to communicate to the Interzone, the citizens of the playa were communicating through this device with themselves, their loved ones, and the Universe. It was here in this place upon the deep playa where thoughts converged through time and space into a few everlasting lines of ink.

Notes written by the people of the playa were by the hundreds. The most expressive have been collected here:

BURNING MAN EARTH PROJECT HELPING HAITI RECOVERY EFFORTS

This is a letter from Andrew Johnstone of the Burning Man Earth Project to Carmen Mauk of Burners Without Borders:

“Hi Carmen, Just to let you know that as soon as the Haiti quake hit our main software developers for BME, Jeff Johnson and Mikel Maron, both got their sleeves rolled up and put together an interactive iPhone app with up to minute cartography for rescue workers on the ground. I am humbled that they are on our project and honored to call them friends…

APOGAEA ART GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE

Apogaea is a (really cool) Regional event in Front Range, Colorado, over the weekend of June 10-13, 2010.

Apogaea’s 2010 creative grant cycle is now open! Ape’s Creative Committee will accept grant applications for visual art, workshops, performances, theme camps, installations, environments, sound, video, and more. We encourage all creative types to apply for grants to help see their visions to completion.

In the past, artists have been awarded grants between $50 and $1,500. The Creative Committee will take into consideration the feasibility of your creative concept, adherence to a leave-no-trace ethic, your accomplishments, and the potential of your concept to encourage community involvement, as well as an interactive and participatory experience.

Creative projects at Apogaea face unique challenges in design, creation, and transportation. Weather, site conditions, citizens, safety, and transportability should be considered. Projects must leave no trace and you must leave the environment as you found it.

As in 2009, Apogaea will have two grant cycles. The first cycle, with an application deadline of February 21, is for projects with no budget request limit. The second cycle, with an application deadline of March 21 and a maximum grant amount of $200, is for smaller projects that do not require as much time or money to complete.

Please visit http://www.apogaea.com for more information about the festival, previously-funded work, contacts, and the grant process.

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS OPERATION HAITI RELIEF – GET INVOLVED!

Carmen Mauk of Burners Without Borders writes:

“Burners Without Borders is responding to the devastating earthquake in Haiti with strategic actions and deployments that are making a difference. Thank you to this community for your generous support in making this all possible. There are a lot of ways to participate in this effort, and we encourage you to check out our website to hear our audio blog from Haiti and to keep up with the latest updates as well as the needs as they become known:

http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org

For the past week, we have had the good fortune to have a plane at our disposal to deploy medical missions out of Florida to the regions in Haiti who are most need of attention. We would like to continue these deployments for the next two weeks and are putting out the call for a pilot with a plane who would like to join the team-BWB can cover the fuel.

BWB met with the head of Agriculture for Haiti and he asked us to quickly secure donations of non-hybrid seeds. With the rains coming soon, there is an urgent need for these seeds so they can be planted now. Check with your local seed stores and ask if they would like to make a donation. The Haitians have requested the following seeds: apricot, cabbage, tomato, potato, carrots, red and white beans, yams, corn, pistachio, papaya, cauliflower, squash, watermelon, purple onion, sweet peas, garlic, beans/red and white, peppers and spicy peppers.

Haiti experienced no less than eight hurricanes last year, and as the people brace themselves for the rainy season, they are in dire need of tents and tarps that are in good shape. Please consider going to your local sports shop and asking if they would like to make a donation.

If you are able to provide any of these supplies, please e-mail carmen (at) burnerswithoutborders (dot) org for the address in Florida where you can send your donation. Thanks!”
