Well, it’s that time of year. In one the most telling signs of spring, the Jack Rabbit’s Table of Contents is starting to grow with the length of the daylight hours. Yep, it’s just about now that things start to really crank up, and the information’s going to be coming fast and furious, folks, so strap on in.

We’ve got a good variety of random stuff for you, from Santa Cruz to Australia, Shakespeare to Underwear, and damn near everything in between. So whether you want to get a $5,000 Burners Without Borders grant to do cool things out in the world, get trained to be a Leave No Trace trainer, or download an iPhone app … it’s all here.

We hope, by the way, that no matter who you are, in addition to reading your JRS you’re also regularly checking in on the Burning Blog! You know, here:

http://blog.burningman.com.

Speaking of the blog, you may have noticed our little post on April 1st (which in itself should be a strong hint) about our providing waste collection services on playa in 2010. And yeah, that was an April Fool’s Prank. We hooked a lot of people on that one, and we wanted to let you know that we’re definitely NOT going to be offering that service. Burning Man is the largest Leave No Trace event in the world thanks to participants like YOU who pack out every last thing that they pack in (except maybe their sanity). Because you people are just. That. Cool. Learn more about our LNT ethic here:

http://burningman.com/environment/playa_restoration/

Oh and hey, in other news, we recently surpassed the 80,000 fans mark on the Burning Man Facebook page, which is pretty amazing given that it’s existed for less than 2 years (by contrast, the JRS took about 10 years to reach 100k!). Head over there and check out the scene:

http://www.facebook.com/burningman

Until next time!

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS $5,000 GRANT PROGRAM 2010 – APPLY BY 4/25

Last year, BWB’s grant program was so successful, we’re doing it again! BWB is launching a $5,000 grant program, and you are invited to participate. Over the years, we have learned that real change starts at the grassroots level, and sometimes it just needs a little boost to get going. BWB is taking $5,000 of your generous contributions from this past year to help jump start civic projects in your neck of the woods.

We are hoping to stimulate a lot of projects and are offering awards from $100-$1,000. It’s simple. Gather your community, find out what you care about, and let your imaginations run wild. The deadline for submissions is 4/25. You can learn about the details and fill out a simple application on the home page at

http://www.bunerswithoutborders.org

Check out last year’s grant recipients by clicking on “BWB Stimulus Package Projects”.

BWB is here to support you in making your project a success. We can help you get the word out to the appropriate networks in your community and are happy to help you brainstorm ideas-just send an e- mail to:

projects (at) burnerswithoutborders (dot) org.

If you would like to make a donation to BWB’s Grant Program, your donation will enable even more incredible projects to be funded in a community near you.

BLACK ROCK SOLAR GETS SOME NICE INK

Hey, The Reno Gazette Journal did a nice piece on Black Rock Solar. Here’s an excerpt:

“‘Burning Man has a large ‘leave-no-trace’ philosophy, and also this gifting culture so we wanted to do something with those panels once the event was over,’ said Tom Clark, a renewable energy lobbyist who also works with Black Rock Solar. ‘So, we came up with the idea of installing those panels at the Gerlach school, and that’s really where Black Rock Solar was born from.'”

SEND US YOUR BRC CAMERA/MEDIA TALES

Burning Man is in the process of analyzing our longtime approach to image use at the event, and discussing our approach to privacy and image rights in the face of the rapid evolution of media-making and digital image use online. (New to this subject? Start by reviewing our Press Section at http://www.burningman.com/press, and our Blog post in 2009 on this issue: http://bit.ly/dfOqFu )

In the course of this analysis, we seek to integrate as much participant feedback as posisble. We want to hear from you about your interactions with people using cameras at Burning Man – professional, personal, and everything in between – and how it has affected (or not) your experience.

Have you had a personal interaction with a videography team that interfered with your day, your camp, or your artwork? Did you enjoy a nice moment with a photographer who asked permission and even shared a copy of your costume photo post-event? We’d like to hear your stories. If you’ve got general thoughts or criticisms about how cameras are permitted and used at Burning Man, or a personal story to share, please send an email to:

cameratales (at) burningman (dot) com

We are holding our next internal meeting on this subject on April 28, so please submit your camera stories by Friday April 23, 2009.

(PS: It’s worth noting that we know that cameras and privacy are a hot button issue, but we do ask that you please keep your feedback or criticism constructive!)

OFFICIAL BURNING MAN 2010 POSTERS NOW AVAILABLE

Haven’t visited the burningman.com Marketplace in a while? Well there are a couple of exciting new items: we’ve got not one, but two(!), gorgeous posters illustrating dramatically different interpretations of this year’s Metropolis theme.

One was designed by Arin Fishkin (http://arinfishkin.com), the immensely talented designer who produced this year’s event ticket. Expanding on her concept for the ticket, and taking full advantage of the larger size of a poster, Arin creates a mysterious Metropolis with a topsy-turvy sense of perspective, a humorous and somewhat ominous juxtaposition of recognizable structures from around the world, and lots of intricate layers and fun hidden imagery. The second poster was designed by the dynamic duo who brought us the fantastical 2009 Evolution ticket: Cory & Catska Ench (http://enchgallery.com). Once again they transport us to a lush, dreamlike scene where an optical illusion reveals the human element at the center of an urban settlement.

Both posters are currently available on the burningman.com Marketplace (http://marketplace.burningman.com/catalog.php) for a reasonable $12 each, plus shipping. And in case you didn’t already get yours, the beautiful 2009 edition of the burn year calendar is still available.

ALL HAIL THE FIRE ART SAFETY TEAM!

For years, the Performance Safety Team has provided an eye on the safe use of fire at Burning Man. The mission of this team has broadened from its inception.

This team is now involved with regulating the safe use of fire in art installations, mutant vehicles, and larger flame effects in theme camps. In order to reflect this, we have changed our name to “Fire Art Safety Team.”

We will continue to bring the highest level of safety to the event, while at the same time preserving the intimacy and intensity of the fire experience.

While we were at it, we consolidated and updated all of our web-based information and guidelines for the use of fire at Burning Man. We think you will find this a simple way to safely prepare to use all forms of fire at the event, from a small burn barrel in your theme camp to burning a large work of art on the open playa.

Fire Art Guidelines:
http://burningman.com/installations/index_fire_art.html

The Fire Art Safety team is here to help you with your plans. If you have any questions please contact us at fire-art (at) burningman (dot) com

Remember, all art installations must be registered. Burning Man’s Art Installation Registration Questionnaire is available online until July 1st, 2010.

The art questionnaire can be found here:

http://forms.burningman.com/

We look forward to seeing your work on fire.

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR NAMES OF BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to net year’s plaque.

The plaque is not displayed in the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 30th) through Friday (September 3rd).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

COMMUNITY FUNDING EXPERIMENT FOR THE BURNING OPERA – PLEASE HELP!

Dana Harrison writes:

“Last year the Burning Opera delighted audiences with nine sold-out performances of our original mutant rock opera designed to distill and transmit the energy of Burning Man to a dust-free audience. Now, we’re working to raise money to produce a CD of the studio recordings of songs from the show, and we’d like YOU to pitch in (and receive goodies in exchange for your pledge).

Kickstarter is a community-funding tool that allows groups to raise money for creative projects. Since our show is partly about transformation through community and volunteerism, it makes perfect sense to use the kind of ‘barn-raising’ strategy that Kickstarter facilitates: we Burners totally get this kind of grass-roots approach, and we know we can accomplish amazing things with the Power of Many.

Go to our project page on Kickstarter to see a hot video clip of the show and learn more about what we’re up to, and check out www.burningopera.com or our facebook page to see more video excerpts and hear songs from the show.

Of course our longer-term goal is still to bring this show around the country — perhaps even to your town. Getting these greats songs out there to be enjoyed is part of the process to make that dream a reality. Thanks for your help!”

EARN YOURSELF A FREE TICKET TO BURNING MAN

John Glueck writes:

“Hello!

My wife and I attended last year’s burn for the first time, and to say the very least, it has transformed our lives. The wife now has two tattoos of the ‘man’ logo on her HEAD! (Ed note: JPG’s plz? OMG. – AG)

We had an idea this year for helping someone else to get to see, experience and participate in the wonder that is Burning Man. We are going to give a ticket away, free, to one lucky person. (Sadly, one is all we can afford, if we could buy and give away 100 tickets we would.)

We would ask those that wish to participate in this to send us an email, no more than 500 words, of why they wish to be at Burning Man this year. We will begin accepting emails immediately with a cutoff date of May 1st. We’ll make announcement of who will receive the ticket on May 15th.

All emails sent to us will be strictly confidential. We will not post them, nor share them.

Please send your essay to:

myburninggift (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Sincerely,
John Glueck”

PLAYA TIP: CARBONATED WATER NEUTRALIZES ALKALAI DUST

Douglas Habersaat writes in to share this handy tip:

“Here is an idea that would enhance the playa experience for all Burners:

Several burns ago, I realized that the playa is made of a strongly alkaline (very caustic) substance. The alkali dust is harsh on your skin as well as anything is comes in contact with. I decided to bring to the next burn a mild acid to neutralize the caustic element of playa dust. The criteria was that the acid would have to be mild, inexpensive, found in any grocery store and safe enough to drink. I brought vinegar (acetic acid, a weak acid) and used it to wash my hands and feet after a long day at the playa. It worked very well. The problem was that it, well, smelled like vinegar (yukk!).

I was determined to find an alternative. I realized that ordinary carbonated water was a weak acid which was odorless. I brought several bottles of carbonated water to the playa in 2009 and found out that it worked as well as vinegar to neutralize playa dust. Carbonated water is sold as “Seltzer water”. Club soda is similar, but includes quinine to give it some flavor. I recommend that everybody bring a few bottles of seltzer water to wash your hands and feet to get rid of the alkali. Any theme camp, with a bar, can make their own carbonated water. You can find out how to make your own seltzer water by using a search engine to find “bar supplies, seltzer water”.

See you all on the playa!”

CRITICAL MASSIVE ART GRANTS AVAILABLE

Critical Massive 2010 (or MMX, as the production kids call it) is racing towards us, so it’s time to think about what amazing art you’d like to build and bring. Got a project in the works for Burning Man: Metropolis and want to show it closer to home first? Have an older piece that needs some minor repairs or a few clams to fund fuel or transport? Read on, we have a whole new class of grant that’s right up your alley. There is a lot of information so please read carefully and contact us if you have questions.

When is Critical Massive?
July 19 – 25, 2010 at Lake Associates Recreation Club (LARC) in lovely, nearby Mt Vernon, WA

Mark your calendars :
Submission period opens: Monday, March 1st – 9am
Submission period closes: Wednesday, March 31st – 10pm
Award recipients notified by: Wednesday, April 14th

About the Grants:

*Grants for New Works. Intended for larger pieces, typically sculptural, interactive or both, but we’re open to hearing the creative ideas you have. Art grant awards are capped at 20% of the entire art grant budget. This year, the per-project cap will be $1600. Please keep this in mind as you develop the budget for your project.

*Refurb Art Grants are intended to support the renewal and exhibition of existing Works at Critical Massive by providing awards for minor repairs, fueling flame effects and/or transportation to Critical Massive. Maximum award for Refurb Art Grants is $200.

*Microgrants, capped at $100, are intended to encourage art throughout the event in ways not typically thought of for art grants. Umbrella Favela (from CM’08) is a delightful example of the kind of project we’re interested in for microgrants: inexpensive, with high wow factor.

Crank out the details, sit down with your project-mates to write those bios — that application isn’t going to write itself. (If the above link doesn’t work, cut and paste this: http://tinyurl.com/cm10artapp)

Beginning at 9am on Monday, March 1st, (that’s tomorrow!) you’ll be able to fill out the required online form: http://tinyurl.com/cm10form

Need some clarification? Send email to artgrant (at) ignitionnw (dot) org

I’m excited for this year’s event, and can’t wait to see what wonderful creative works that you all bring.

Best,
~Julie Vithoulkas

THE GREAT AMERICAN UNDERWEAR CENSUS PROJECT NEEDS YOUR … UNDERWEAR

This is a nice idea, and though we’re frankly a little iffy on the “send us $1 with your underwear for ‘handling'” part, we’ll leave that entirely up to your discretion. We’d have to guess that underwear that shows up without $1 included would still get used … somehow. Just sayin’. Anyway, read on:

“My family and I are creating an art project for Burning Man this year and need your help. Well, actually we need your underwear. Yes, your briefs or boxers, panties or thongs.

To showcase this year’s theme of “Metropolis” we’re creating an entire structure out of underwear. Showing metropolitan diversity through your under-wears!

So, this is where you and all the members of your household can support the arts. We need you to send us a pair of your “CLEAN” underwear. Whatever defines you the best – briefs, boxers, granny panties, or thongs. Then, we’ll string them all together to create a huge art project, posting the pictures on our facebook page. So, be creative, show us your true colors or even your school colors.

Rummage through those drawers:
1. Pick out a pair that expresses you the best.

2. Personalize them (Bold permanent marker please) with your name, slogan, team fight song or just a greeting to those at Burning Man.

3. Please, include a $1.00 bill with each pair you send in. This will cover handling, building supplies and shipping cost to Black Rock City.

4. Mail your CLEAN underwear to:

The Great American Underwear Census
2108-110 Park Avenue
Orange Park, FL 32073

5. Tell all your friends they need to “drop’em for the arts” too. The more we receive the bigger the art structure will be. Deadline for entries is no later than August 15th, 2010. Send today so we can start building.

Mail today your personalized CLEAN undies, each with a dollar bill. Support the arts.

We need your underwear for The Great American Underwear Census at Burning Man.”

BURNING MAN / EARTH GUARDIANS LNT TRAIN THE TRAINER CAMPING EVENT – APRIL 24-25

April 24-25, 2010, Santa Cruz, CA

On April 24//25 Earth Guardians will host our annual Leave No Trace (LNT) camping trip. If you are interested in learning more about why Burning Man is the largest LNT event in the world and how you can help contribute by teaching LNT, this is the trip for you. We will also discuss ways to green Burning Man with past participants who come each year to reconnect and reinvigorate.

If you come, you will become a certified LNT trainer, meet other active Burners, visit the beautiful Sierra foothills and have FUN at the same time. There is no charge for this training – it is sponsored by Burning Man.

The trip involves traveling near Santa Cruz and “camping” at a private home in the country. We will conduct the class out doors. Each of you will be teaching a principle of LNT with an emphasis on how it pertains to Burning Man and the desert environment.

Please sign up for the course only when you are sure you will attend. This will help us coordinate the assignments given to the participants for the seven principles of LNT.

On completion of this class you will receive a certificate as a LNT trainer from the National LNT organization. Your mission, upon completion, will be to teach your fellow residents of Black Rock City how to Leave No Trace and Green Their Burn as well as spreading LNT ethics throughout your community and beyond.

Registration will close on April 14th. If you are interested, send an email to: lnt (at) burningman (dot) com

THE ANXIETY SHOW – PROJECT ONE GALLERY, SF

Hey, if you happen to be in SF, LadyBee (Burning Man’s former art curator, you may recall) is curating an art exhibit featuring the works of many Burning Man artists. Check it out:

The Anxiety Show
Project One Gallery, SF
251 Rhode Island, San Francisco April 7 – May 9

Curated by Christine Kristen aka LadyBee
Opening 8- 12 DJ Feral on the decks www.P1SF.com

“Anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity.” – T.S. Eliot

The economic crisis, global warming, overpopulation, corporate globalization, terrorism and the wars have generated a free-floating anxiety, which is difficult not to internalize. The future seems uncertain at best. Will humans prevail, or have we passed the point of no return? Ten artists explore issues of anxiety from global to extremely personal:

Jenny Bird Alcantara, Bryan Tedrick, Brian Goggin, Deirdre de Franceaux, Laura Kimpton and Jeff Schomberg, Jonathan Solo, Lee Harvey Roswell, Frances Baker and Tony Speirs.
