{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

If you’ve recently started hearing the distant sound of hammering, grinding, welding, cutting and laughter, that’s prooooobably any one of many Burning Man artists starting work on their projects for 2010. Yep, we’ve announced our Honorarium Art Installations for this year (check it out, below), and the artists are now gathering their teams, acquiring their materials, assembling their tools, and getting to work!

We’re especially psyched that this year’s Temple will be constructed by our good friends and long-time Burning Man artists Rebecca Anders, Jess Hobbs, and Peter “PK” Kimelman. Rebecca and Jess have a storied history with the Flaming Lotus Girls (perhaps you’ve heard of them?), and they’ve decided to take on the challenge of Black Rock City’s spiritual centerpiece, calling their offering the “Temple of Flux.” Theirs is an innovative, avant garde and striking design, and we’re very excited to see it on playa. Read Jess’s description of how they came to the decision to do the Temple in the Burning Blog:

http://bit.ly/bi6gds

Of course, there are hundreds more artists that are going to be toiling over artworks for Black Rock City that aren’t part of the Honorarium program, and these folks are going to be self-funding or creatively-funding their pieces … and there’s a darn good chance they could use some help. Whether it’s cold hard cash, elbow grease or sweat equity, check around and see who’s building something near you and see if they could use a hand. It’s a great way to experience (read: participate in!) the event and meet new people.

You’ll find all the Honorarium Artists’ contact information on the web page (see below), and you can also toss out your willingness to help on:

The Burning Man Facebook Page: http://facebook.com/burningman
… and the ePlaya: http://eplaya.burningman.com

Once the art starts happening, it sure feels like full steam ahead to Black Rock City!

2010 HONORARIUM ART INSTALLATIONS ANNOUNCED

Burning Man’s Art Grant Committee has been hard at work, poring over submmission after submission, determining how best to allocate their grant budget (nearly $440,000, which is paid for out of your ticket price) to help facilitate the best possible offering of art on playa this year. And we’re proud to announce the Honorarium Art Installations for 2010:

http://www.burningman.com/installations/10_art_honor.html

Of course, these just represent the centrally-funded artworks … there are hundreds more that people self-finance or creatively-finance themselves to bring to the playa for our community to enjoy.

Thanks to ALL the artists who create work for the playa!

THEME CAMP REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS APPROACHING!!! APRIL 29!

We have heard the complaint that has been growing louder every year: announcing Placement on August 1st is a huge obstacle to travel planning for the east coast and international members of our community.

We have moved the plans submission deadline up to April 29th this year, so we can announce Placement one month earlier in early July.

STEAMPUNK TREE HOUSE TO BE INSTALLED PERMANENTLY ON THE EAST COAST

Five Ton Crane, the kids behind the amazing Steam Punk Tree House project that was created for and exhibited at Burning Man 2007, have let us know that they’ve inked a deal to install the piece in a to-be- announced location on the East Coast this summer. And this? Is very exciting. They’re hard at work retrofitting the Tree House for permanent installation as we type. Congratulations to the Five Ton Crane crew! More info on their website:

PDX BRIDGE FESTIVAL CALL FOR ART

The Portland Bridge Festival is a really amazing Burning Man-inspired interactive art event taking place in Portland this summer (July 23 – August 8), and it’s being produced by Tucker Teutsch, co-creator of the Basura Sagrada Temple in 2008. He’s opened up a call for artists and asked us to send it around. They’re also having a fundraiser on May 13, and they’re seeking donations for it … you can learn more about that on their website:

http://www.pdxbridgefestival.org

WE WANT YOUR ART!*

This summer, we will dominate Portland with your art. Who are we? PDX Bridge Festival. We are artists. Dreamers. Doers. Makers of things.

We are three weekends of awesome on and around the bridges of Portland. And we want you to join us!

This summer, we celebrate the bridges with a festival of artistic excellence, producing an awe-inspiring event and providing a major showcase for Portland artists, musicians and performers. So where do we start? By engaging creators of all kinds in a citywide conversation about “bridges.” Thematically. Metaphorically. Satirically. And literally, if you swing that way.

Crocheting a sculpture of the Hawthorne Bridge? Obviously! Composing a symphonic ode to dental bridges? Yes, please. A Jeff Bridges movie? Yep. We’re into that, too.

But first, you must SUBMIT.

DO IT! By June 16th, 2010

*This call for art brought to you by PDX Bridge Festival and Portland City Art. Art will be exhibited at the 2010 PDX Bridge Festival in a variety of traditional and non-traditional venues.

SUBMIT AT: http://www.pdxbridgefestival.org/submit

If Burners want to come up for the festival, we have hotel specials happening and would love to hook em up with lodgings (both low-brow and high-end, depending on what they want). The word “flicker’ gets them special deals at the Jupiter Hotel (a very cool spot here in PDX) during the festival.

SKILLED LABORERS AND BIODIESEL GURUS NEEDED IN PERU

Burners Without Borders’s Carmen Mauk writes:

“When Burners Without Borders’s major volunteer deployment ended after a year of working in Peru, we wanted to find a sustainable way in which we could continue to support the reconstruction efforts in Pisco for years to come. Well, for the past two years this has been an amazing success with the formation of Pisco Sin Fronteras.

The large numbers of PSF volunteers are extremely dedicated to the reconstruction of Pisco, yet are lacking the extensive skills our community possesses to lead and design projects. BWB is putting the call out for skilled Volunteers to support PSF in reaching its fullest potential.

To see the specific skills that are needed in account management, carpentry, wetlands restoration and biodiesel — just to name a few — please click here and get in touch:

Check out this incredibly inspiring 10 minute video about BWB’s work in Peru. Thanks to Kelly and Jefe for volunteering their time to produce this beautiful piece.

SEEKING PIMP YOUR BIKE SUPPLIES

Contact Kent directly if you can help him out.

“Hi,

Kent Leech here of Camp Bioluminati. We’ve been doing ‘Pimp Yr Bike’ since 2006; usually on the Center Camp Outer Ring Road.

We need piping supplies. Non-moopy [Editor’s note: MOOP is “matter out of place”, aka trash, aka Things That Fall Apart And Make A Mess] stuff from paints to fabric to shiny plastic trinkets so folks can decorate their bikes.

Thanks!
-Kent

HEEBEEGEEBEE HEALING OASIS NEEDS MASSAGE TABLES

The Heebeegeebees write in:

“Do you or someone you know have a folding massage table sitting around somewhere? Bring it to the playa and donate it to the Heebeegeebee Healers of Nectar Village! We provide free healing services to thousands of individuals every year during the Burning Man Festival, and hope that the energy we cultivate spreads into the greater world, creating love, health and a higher state of being for everyone. Your table will be used to benefit the community of Black Rock City for years to come. (No really, it would suck not to be able to get a session not because we don’t have awesome healers available but because we have no massage table for you to relax upon.)”
