{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Last Friday, the Man Krew embarked for Black Rock Station (our ranch / staging area / storage area / multi-use workshop up near the playa) to commence the construction of the Burning Man. As we type, the Krew is ankle-deep in sawdust, power tools and glory, building … okay, one peek, courtesy of Slim: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sfslim/4752030639/ FYI: The Man is built early so that it has a chance to dry out and cure by event time, so it burns like we aaaaall want it to.

We’ve got some fun participation opportunities coming your way this week, so whether you’re a sound technician, stage manager, software engineer, chef, dreamer, or you’ve got two thumbs and are looking for something to do … there’s a good chance you’ll find something that suits your fancy here. We suspect we’ll be seeing more and more of these coming your way in the next weeks, so stay tuned. If you haven’t sussed this point out by now, coming to Burning Man is about participating, and it’s our aim to help share the many ways you can do just that.

The next edition of the JRS is going to be our annual Resource Edition, and it will be coming out at the end of this week. This once-a-year edition can be discarded if you prefer to find your own resources and places to buy what you need for the playa without any help (hey, we can respect that) but we share this space for that list once a year, so heads up, it’s coming your way.

DMV and art installation registration closes this week, and we’re gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’ve got all your ducks in a row by now, but in case you don’t … now’s about the time to freak fully. Details on where to direct your anxiety, below.

The Man burns in 65 days!

SACRED WATER: DOCUMENTARY OF A BURNING MAN ART PROJECT

Part artistic inspiration, part cautionary tale — if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to take on an ambitious art project your first year at Burning Man, this excellent documentary from the Museum of Outdoor Arts really covers it nicely. They write:

“In 2007, a group of artists from Colorado set out to create a series of art and music installations in the savage Black Rock Desert. What transpired became a study in both Burning Man and performance art that was captured on video. Enjoy!

VOLUNTEER CALL-OUT FOR STAGE MANAGERS, SOUND TECHS & GEAR GODS

We are still looking for Stage Managers, Sound Technicians and the ever-so-valued Gear Gods to come contribute their attributes to our stage! Let me know which position is best suited to your undeniable pool of talents. Read on and then ACT!

Please email me, themitch (at) burningman (dot) com with any questions you have about volunteering here at the Cafe Stage(s)!

All shifts are only 4 hours long and they fly by with an average of five to ten acts per shift! If you are interested in coming to play in the Café, meeting really talented, funny, strange and creative people, and work with some amazing artists, this is the place to be. We would love to have you on our team!

a. Sound Technicians: People who love music. Love mixing it. Love working with bands and have prior experience with live sound engineering. It does not matter if it was in a tiny dive club or a giant venue so long as you know your stuff and are ready for a challenge of teching in a dust storm. 😉

b. Gear Gods: Essentially people who know sound equipment, enjoy the weirdness of the professional sound technician, and who can lift 50lbs without hurting yourself (or anyone else for that matter). Do you know how to plug a mic into a snake? If you don’t this probably is not your ideal position.

c. Stage Managers: Engaged, flexible, organized, detail people who can field questions from random people as well as bands who are scheduled to perform. You are the reason the stage runs on time. Or anywhere close to time. You get to be lord and master of the “GO’ button. No previous experience required… we can help you learn!

Come out and play. At the center camp Café stage!

Burning Man is seeking Django developers and other geeky friends to work on some exciting projects which will be premiering in BRC 2010 and soon after. Help bring emerging technologies to the playa and beyond! Help build tools that showcase the immense creativity of our community!

There are many opportunities to get involved and many ways to contribute. We are especially seeking developers who can commit to some immediate projects and help see them through implementation in Black Rock City. Please respond to djangodev (at) burningman (dot) com with your skills, interest and availability. Giddyup!

ATTENTION ALL OPEN SOURCE WIZARDS AND PROGRAMMER GEEKS

Black Rock City is a magnificent example of an Open Source community at work and at play. Recently, Burning Man has renewed its commitment to “open sorcery” beyond the playa. Visit it to learn how you can contribute your geeky skills to the community right from your keyboard. You’ll find projects such as a new Playa Directory, Burning Man Earth, Ranger HQ administration, a new Multimedia Gallery and more to come. CALLING THEME CAMPS & ARTISTS: PARTICIPATE IN THE FEED THE ARTISTS PROGRAM

Speaking as one who’s worked on a large-scale art installation for Burning Man, this is probably one of the all-time coolest ways to participate on playa. This golden opportunity to give back to the artists who give us so much, while warming your heart as you’re cooking for somebody else, makes for quite a magical connection. That, and you get to meet all these wonderful people in the process. Big thumbs up for the Feed the Artists Program … participate in this if you can! Colonel Angus will tell you how:

“Hi everyone, Colonel Angus here.

FtA is a Communal Art Grant through food; an opportunity for the Burning Man community, as represented by its theme camps, to support the artists who make Burning Man so special, by granting them the gift of nourishment, camaraderie, support, and appreciation.

The idea is simple. In addition to our own dinners, we match BM artists, with early-arrival theme camps who may have the space, time, and a bit of extra resources to provide a very special gift…a nourishing, heartfelt meal. A meal that provides everyone involved with a brief respite from the stresses of playa setup; a meal that allows two groups who may not have otherwise become acquainted to “break-bread” together and discover each other; and, most importantly, a meal that nourishes the bodies, minds, and souls of all its participants, and ultimately, by extension, the entire Burning Man community.

BUT WE NEED YOU TO TAKE SOME ACTION IF YOU WANT TO BE INCLUDED:

THEME CAMPS:
Last year, FtA, along with THIRTY FIVE other theme camps, provided at least one gourmet meal to EVERY ARTIST who wanted one, over 1000 people, and the responses from the theme camp hosts were phenomenal. In many cases, the theme camps enjoyed the experience as much, if not more so, than their guests! So is your camp going to be out on the playa during setup week, and would you like to feed some artists? If so, check out the FtA website:

http://www.feedtheartists.net

It will tell you everything you need to know, including which artists are available on which nights. Artist’s crews range in size from 4–70+, so even the smallest camps can serve as hosts. And we’ll help you every step of the way.

ARTISTS:
The way the program works is that you input the following information on ourwebsite (http://www.feedtheartists.net): 1. When you’ll be arriving on the playa,
2. How many people you’ll have in your crew on playa EACH night of setup week,
3. Whether anyone in your crew has any dietary restrictions, and if so, what.

The information will then be available for theme camps to peruse and invite you to dinner. Once you have been invited to dinner, you will receive a confirmation from FtA listing when and where the dinner will take place and the contact information of your hosts. You contact your hosts and work out all the details, and we’ll follow up with you on the playa to make sure everything is still as planned and give you and your crew a special gift. It’s that simple.

Any questions email us at: communications(at)feedtheartists.net ”

THE GREAT BLACK ROCK CITY KINETIC SCULPTURE RACE & TREASURE HUNT

Katy of the KCC writes:

“The Kinetic Cab Company will be having The Great Black Rock City Kinetic Sculpture Race and Treasure Hunt – followed by a Finish Line Party at the Kinetic Cab Company – on Thursday, September 2nd @ 4:20 PM.

We’re looking for theme camps to participate in the Treasure Hunt. Kinetic Cabs will race around the playa searching for participating theme camp locations in order to collect whatever “treasure” that camp chooses to bestow upon the cabbies. Small items, hugs, anything easy to tote would work great.

Participating theme camps will have an up-close and personal parade of kinetic cabs and perhaps even get to replace some riders that need a break from pedaling.

Here’s a link to our website so everyone can take a look at some of the cabs we’ll be driving.

http://www.kineticcabco.org

Thanks for all you do,
Katy”

BURNING MAN DREAM PROJECT

This is pretty cool. We hear about people’s Burning Man dreams all the time. Burning Man in a forest? In a mall? On the ocean? In the city? You name it. Definitely curious to see what comes of this. They say:

“I am organizing a project called the Burning Man Dream Project. Quite simply, I am interested in how people are dreaming about Burning Man. I am therefore collecting accounts of peoples’ Burning Man dreams from around the world and analyzing them for recurrent themes. I am doing this to understand the symbols that our collective conscious has inscribed upon this dusty ritual in Black Rock City. How does Black Rock call us to the desert through our dreams? Do our dusty dreams warn us? Inform us? Entertain us? Enchant us?

To Participate:
Send an email to bmandreamproject (at) gmail (dot) com . In the email include:

+Age,
+Sex,
+Number of Burning Man events attended,
+Description of your Dream (and date you had it if possible)

Please make sure this dream is a dream you had about/in/related to Burning Man since Burning Man 2009. Write out the dream in as much detail as you remember with as little context, interpretation, extraneous story attached to it as possible. If you’d like to discuss how this dream came true or means you secretly want to have sex with your mother, please put it in a completely different section.

Feel free to submit as many Burning Man dreams as you’ve had.

Thank you and stay tuned for results!!!”
