We’ll just go ahead and start this JRS cold with the sobering news that the Man burns in … 31 days. And gates open? In 26. The Golden Spike (the spot on which the Man is built, and the central point from which the rest of Black Rock City is surveyed) went in the ground on Sunday night!

If you’re not knee-deep in your storage closet, huffing playa dust and excavating the bits, bobs and detritus of your last Burn about now, well … you probably should be. And for all you first-timers out there … you Birgins (as we’ve heard them called lately) … you’d better be on the edge of your proverbial seat, because tell ya what … in a few weeks, you’re in for what could turn out to be the most incredible, mind-blowing experience of your life. The veterans are sagely nodding their heads right now.

And the butterflies are taking wing in your belly. Excellent.

OK, all of y’all … check this out. We’ve revamped the Preparation section of the Burning Man website, and that’s the ultimate place to go to learn pretty much everything you need to know about preparing (hence the name) for Burning Man. Whether you want to learn how to secure your shade structure or secure your relationship, we’ve got it covered. If you want to find out about how to prevent playa foot, or find a sno-cone in Reno, we’ve got that too. And everything in between. Seriously.

http://www.burningman.com/preparation

We are very … very excited to see you all in the desert, and experience all the amazingness you will manifest in all myriad ways.

26 days, people. Let’s make this happen.

PROMOTE YOUR CAMP WITH A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ON BMIR!

Promote your camp with a Public Service Announcement on BMIR-FM, Burning Man Information Radio!

BMIR-FM, 94.5 is The Voice of the Man and is one of the best ways to let Black Rock City know about what your camp has to offer be it a fabulous bar, an event, a performance or a really cool art installation.

If someone in your camp is an audio wizard, we are now accepting pre-recorded announcements. We would LOVE to have them in hand before we leave for the playa so we can start running them on the air ASAP. Not sure how to record something ahead of time? No worries! J Kanizzle, BMIR’s Production Manager has put together this handy tutorial that shows you how to download and configure Audacity, a free audio recording program. The tutorial then takes you through the basics of creating your very own announcement.

The tutorial can be found at : http://tinyurl.com/mn55p5

Once you have something recorded please email before August 21st to: BMIR (at) Burningman (dot) com

Remember to let people know the basics : what, where and when. Please keep announcements under 60 seconds and send them to us in .mp3 or .wav format.

Can’t make the August 21st deadline? You can also put your announcements on a CD or flash drive and hand deliver them to us on the playa. BMIR is located on the Ring Road at 1:00, right between the Rangers and The Department of Mutant Vehicles.

Now if you just can’t pull this off, no worries. The BMIR Production Office will be open every day from 12N to 4PM during the event. You can come in and we’ll help you record an announcement right on the playa.

See you on the playa and remember to bring an FM radio!

BLACK ROCK SOLAR HITS A MILLION WATTS…AND AN OPEN POSITION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Two big announcements from Black Rock Solar!

Thanks to very generous donations from the Burning Man community, Black Rock Solar just completed a 30KW solar array gifted to the Fernley Fire Department. That brings Black Rock Solar’s total solar installed to one megawatt. VOLUNTEER WTIH AIR PLAYA INFO AT THE RENO AIRPORT

Ahem. This time we have the right email address. So anyway …

Are you looking for an off-playa volunteer opportunity during Burning Man? Can’t make it to BRC this year, but still want to participate somehow? Have some free time before heading off to the Burn? Would you like to greet and assist LOTS of super-excited and jazzed people coming to Black Rock City from all points around the globe?

Air Playa Info returns for its third year to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, providing informative assistance to Burners on the last leg of their journey to the desert from Friday Aug. 27 through Friday Sept. 3. Three-hour shifts are available and parking will be validated for confirmed volunteers. If interested, please email Donna at AirPlayaInfo (at) charter (dot) net.

THE BLACK ROCK BEACON IS BACK – AND SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

And we say: hell yeah. These fine kids write in to let us know:

“The Black Rock Beacon is proud to announce its sixth year serving the Playa with tasty porcions of news, views, and bacon-related tidbits. We’ll be returning to the haunts of our ancestors at Center Camp, where we will produce five issues of Black Rock City’s hometown newspaper for the delectation of the citizens of Metropolis.

We’re looking for a few good volunteers to round out our staff: if you write, edit, do (computer) layout, take pictures, want to deliver the paper and get enormous schwag opportunities or help us run the machinery that makes it all possible, please let us know by email before the event or by dropping by for our 10:30 a.m. meetings on the Playa in our conveniently located digs at 6:30 & Center Camp.

Contact information is on our website at http://www.blackrockbeacon.org, where you can also leave a donation if you like our newspaper and want to support our work.

THEME CAMPS: FEED! ARTISTS: BE FED! PARTICIPATE IN FEED THE ARTISTS!

The inimitable Feed the Artists crew writes to recruit YOU:

“Feed the Artists needs a big push!

:::::THEME CAMPS:::::
We’ve got lots of Artists signed up and need MORE THEME CAMPS to take on the fabulous joy of feeding them! If you are or know anyone who will be on playa pre-burn & who could host an artist, please talk to them, call them, ask them to check this out! They don’t have to be a theme camp per see, anyone who’s out there early is encouraged to mingle with the artists.

There are artists groups in numbers ranging from ONE to THIRTY, so even if you can only invite 2-5 people to dinner, that’s a huge blessing to the artists.

An artist group who just signed up said: “Our meals last year were not only a highlight of our build, but also really contributed a lot to our efforts to putting up the installation. Such a wonderful contribution! : )”

You can check out all of the Artists waiting to be invited to dinner here: http://tinyurl.com/FtAArtistsAvailabilityChart

:::::KICKSTARTER:::::
As part of the FtA program, our own camp has over 50 volunteers who put in loads of time to create a unique and special environment for the Artists we will be hosting, during 4 amazing dinners, where we hope to feed over 500 artists. But these are not normal dinners on the playa! With gourmet food cooked by volunteer professional chefs, multi-course meals, and incredible entertainment. We are therefore seeking to raise money to fund our on-playa dinners, including costs associated with food and beverage, shwag such as medallions to gift the artists, transportation, refrigeration, infrastructure, waste disposal, decor and entertainment.

If you cannot participate in the program itself, it would be so helpful to us to receive any donation towards our efforts. Everything we produce, from the food to the frolicking entertainment, is a deep and heartfelt expression of appreciation for the artists and all the beautiful people who are our guests.

We have 10 days to go to reach our goal of $4,250, with 32 Backers, $2,590 pledged so far.. Please visit –> http://kck.st/9cpNcB.

Also, upcoming FtA events in the SF Bay Area are listed at the EVENTS tab of the FtA page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Feed-The-Artists/353762805543

UPCOMING EVENTS:
– Sun August 8 : Metropolis” Screening at Catalyst SF
– Wed August 11 RUFFLES & TRUFFLES @ supperclub sf”

VOLUNTEER TO BE A TEMPLE GUARDIAN

This is certainly a good cause. Liz writes:

“The temple guardians need volounteers to fill some shifts!

Every year since 2002, a group of quiet but helpful Burners known as the Temple Guardians have watched over the Burning Man temple at night, helping to ground the space and assist others in need.

As a Temple Guardian, you volunteer for one or more three-hour shifts. The shifts run overnight from 6pm until 6am, Monday through early Sunday morning. During your shift, your job is to hang back, help ground the Temple space, and provide assistance to those in need.

We use a “small pushes from great distances” approach to help keep the Temple a serene space. We are not rule-makers, and we are not enforcers. Rather, we wait in the wings and watch, acting skillfully on behalf of the Temple and its visitors.

Our group is about 150 people total, and we often create some playa collectibles, like the bandanna that we produce collaboratively every year. But even more valuable than any physical items is the time you will spend at the temple.

Temple Guardians from prior years have reported miraculous occurrences during their shifts. One couple even met during their Guardian shift and later married! It’s really an amazing experience. It is truly a special role and a fine way to participate in Burning Man.

If you are interested in being a Temple Guardian, please email Liz McDermott at frigovixen (at) gmail (dot) com.

Many thanks and much love — looking forward to seeing you on the playa this year.

Liz Temple Guardian Volunteer Coordinator”

LICK LICK LICK … CRUNCH … THE BRCPO NEEDS YOUR HELP

(A virtual “we’re of the same generation” high-5 for those who get the reference.) Stampy Sadie writes:

“The Black Rock City Post Office 2.Oh of Funky Town would like to announce the return of our amazing E-mail Playagrams. Friends, family, loved ones & enemies can send E-mail Playagrams from the comfort of their boring yet cleaner than Black Rock City Metropolises, towns or villages by e-mailing the BRCPO2.Oh. It’s as simple as following the directions on our website, http://brcpo2oh.weebly.com.

Fear not, fans of good ol’ fashioned stamp licking, because the BRCPO2.Oh has plenty of stampy, stickery action too. In fact, if you support our project on Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/655892687/support-the-black-rock-city-post-office-20h) with just $15 we’ll mail you, or the person of your choice, a Limited Edition Metropolis Post Card right from Black Rock City 2010. Donate $15 many, many times and we’ll send many, many customized dusty Postcards. You can also send any USPS you’d like from Burning Man at the counters of the BRCPO2.Oh in the 9:00 plaza.

If you’re among the unPostalified masses that are asking “What’s a Playagram?” or saying to yourself “I’ve never considered stamps irresistibly sexy” then you should join in the Funky Town Postie party! E-mail brcpo2oh (at) gmail (dot) com to join us or ask any Postaliscious questions. Come play in dusty bureaucracy or become among the Postie proud and the deliriously deliverated by volunteering at the BRCPO2.Oh. Trainings will be held at various and accommodating times Monday through Friday.

The BRCPO2.Oh needs your generous donations to make E-mail Playagrams, Funky Town Posting and Bureaucratic Art a reality on the playa. If you love the PO but just can’t spare any cash, please check our website for a list of items you might have just laying around to donate. And even after enough cash miraculously rolls in to keep the PO alive, the BRCPO2.Oh is always, always seeking sweaty, dusty bodies of all shapes and sizes and Postal experience to participate. Camp with us, help us build, clean-up, play and, best of all, deliver mail!

Thanks! Now I have lots more licking to do…

XOXXX,
Bethany Epiphany aka Stampy Sadie”

PIGEONOPOLIS: BECAUSE WHAT’S A CITY WITHOUT PIGEONS?

Our old friend Spanky is on a tear. And he needs your help. He writes:

“Looking for a cheap, easy, and fun way to participate this year? Help us make pigeons for Metropolis! Pigeons are an often overlooked but ubiquitous part of metropolitan life, and Black Rock City has none. So, we’ve created a little instructional video to show you how easy it is to make a few pigeons to bring with you this year. It costs next to nothing, is easy and cheap, and tons of fun. It’s also a great project to get the kids involved in. We figure if we get 1,000 people to make only 10 pigeons each, that’s 10,000 pigeons! The more the better! Visit our site to see the videos and learn more: http://pigeonopolis.com or email pigeonopolis (at) gmail (dot) com or follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/pigeonopolis

CRTT SEEKS MINIATURE MODELS OF YOUR THEME CAMP (JUST READ IT)

This is crazy. As in … the awesome kind of crazy. Gidget writes:

“C.R.T.T. needs your help with our interactive art project, “METROdome”!

Please contribute miniature models/representations of your theme camp, art installation, regular camp, landmark, etc., which will be suspended from the ceiling of a geodesic dome over its approximate location on a scale BRC map on the floor of the dome, thus creating a miniature floating Black Rock City…

Here are the specs:
**Create a lightweight, 3-dimensional, possibly black light reactive, miniature model or representation of your camp/art (meaning it can look like your actual camp/art OR just be a clever representation)
**Put a suspension point at the top of the miniature since these will be hung with monofilament line from the ceiling of the dome.
**Put your camp/art name and address somewhere on the model. The bottom is probably best since the model will also be viewed from below.
**Scale is approximately 50’=1″. Since that is pretty darn small we are okay with cheating everything up a little. For small to medium size theme camps try to keep the size between a matchbox and an egg. Large camps or villages (half/full block+ size) can go a little bigger (no larger than cigarette pack size). Art installs can also go a little larger for detail (also cigarette pack size).

We are really hoping that representatives from the Man crew, Temple crew, Center Camp, and other landmarks will participate!

Deliver your miniature to us on the playa!
C.R.T.T – Esplanade & 7:00

You can drop off your model, early (from 8/28 on) or during the event, with Gidget at C.R.T.T. or any other capable member of our camp who will give it to me or my co-creators to install. If you wish to keep your model after the event, please pick it up on Sunday before Temple Burn.

It will take the community to build this “community,” please spread the word to others! Thank you so much in advance! It is amazing and inspiring to see the art and work you all do on and off the playa, and we are so grateful for any assistance you can give to this project.

Please contact Gidget at crttcamp (at) gmail (dot) com if you have any questions or wish to confirm participation.”

HEEBEEGEEBEE HEALERS SEEKS HEALERS, MASSAGE TABLES, VOLUNTEERS

Amy writes:

“HeeBeeGeeBee Healers need massage tables, guest healers, and on-playa volunteers. Drop off sites in Boulder, Reno, Berkeley and Santa Barbara. Guest healer applications available now. (If you are a HeeBee healer, and have not received your info sheet, request one today!) Email bonobohouse (at) gmail (dot) com for details.”

ON-PLAYA SCRABBLE

Gidget’s got it goin’ on in Scrabble style this year. She writes:

“Make yourself an EL wire letter before you get to the playa and join us for Scrabble Night on Wed, Sept 1, starting at 9 pm.

Imagine collecting dozens of new and old friends one night on the playa… together we go out and play Scrabble. Each of us has an EL-wire letter hanging in front. We mix and mingle to make words. It’s not like traditional Scrabble… it’s more like fun chaos. We have more than 40 letters (and peeps playing) so far and expect to grow to 50 for our onplaya scrabble “game.”

We’ll meet at the corner of Esplanade and 6:30 and will be easy to spot with our lit-up letters!

If you want your EL letter to match what we’ve done, our letters are 13.5 inches high and 11 inches across and most are aqua-colored standard 2.3 mm wire. To keep it simple, we’ve used 4” zip ties to attach the wire to a plastic grid (in the needlepoint section of Michael’s and Jo-Ann’s and other crafty shops). Of course, feel free to make any kinda letter you like and join us. This is a radically inclusive, equal opportunity event!

Email BRCgidget (at) comcast (dot) net with any questions.”

QUIXOTE’S CABARET CLUB AND BAR SEEKS PERFORMERS

An appeal from Quixote’s Cabaret Club and Bar:

“Quixote’s Cabaret Club and Bar will return to the playa for the sixth time this year, and we need your help to bring our cabaret stage to life.

A camp of mostly Europeans, but with members from all over the globe, each year we build a cabaret club complete with stage, sound systems and lighting, and we run three nights of splendidly eclectic playa entertainment.

Our contribution to the Metropolis is an impregnable castle, and we need court jesters, singing damsels and gallant knights to grace our stage. Indeed if you can sing, dance or strip, fancy yourself as a stand-up comedian, play an instrument, tell jokes, twirl tassles or hoops, yodel, tell poems, spin poi or just do something really weird with a bucket of broken glass and a folding chair that you want the world to see, then please drop us a line at momma.quixote (at) googlemail (dot) com and we’ll find you place at one of our three cabaret nights.”

ADD YOUR OFFERING TO THE TEMPLE – EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT GOING TO THE PLAYA

Madgirl writes:

“The other day in a fit of boredom at work I was daydreaming about the Burn and I found myself thinking about gifting on the playa. I’ve been struggling with this – I really want to give something back to the rest of the BM community but I don’t know how I feel about the idea of giving material things. And then it hit me!

One of the most memorable things about the burn for me is the Temple. I spent hours there last year, reading the things that people had written and looking at the photos they had left. The amount of emotion contained in that small space still blows my mind and the Temple burn was one of the most amazing and spiritual experiences of my life. And then I got to thinking: what about all those people who can’t make it to the Burn this year but have letters/photos/messages/whatever that they would like to put at the Temple?

So this is for all you Burners out there that can’t make it home this year but might have something you want delivered to the Temple: I want to take it there for you. If you have something you would like me to deliver, contact me at csuskiergirl (at) yahoo (dot) com. Most likely the easiest way to get things to me will be by mail but of course I’ll be willing to try and work something else out if need be.

Dusty hugs and kisses to my burner family,
~Madgirl”

ADD YOUR CAMP’S DJ LINEUP TO THE BIG SOUND CAMP MUSIC CALENDAR

The wonderful Rockstar Librarian Kate writes:

“Yes, I’m ready to create the 5th annual Burning Man Big Sound Camp Music Calendar! But I can’t do it without you! I know it’s early, but let’s just say I couldn’t be a real librarian without a *little* OCD on my side…

PLEASE help me help YOU rawk the playa by sending me coordinator contact info, current or future online posts/sites/links for line-ups or any other tidbits that will lead to the best music schedule ever! List will of course be posted once again on many a web site near you!

NEW THIS YEAR! LIVE MUSIC SCHEDULE! Ok, I’ve heard and listened to the playa voices! And since I am in the biz of making people happy, this year I will attempt to make an *additional* schedule of all the live music camps. SO, if you know of camps who will have a stage and schedule for bands to play live, let me know. Oh, and, cuz you are a smartypants, you decide how to define “live” vs. “thumpy thumpy.”

I’ll be getting lots o’ emails about this, so please, when you message me @ rockstarlibrarian (at) yahoo (dot) com include:
1. Camp Name, Camp Location
2. designate as live music or big sound camp/electronic music (& genre)
3. schedule/links to schedule and/or contact info for said schedulers
Much bootie shakin’ love to you all, and thank you in advance for your submissions!”

PLAYATECH EXPANDS CAPACITY 10X TO HANDLE RADICAL GROWTH

Sunshine writes:

“Playatech apologizes to Burners everywhere for factory stoppages occurring after JRS #25, when overwhelming demand for our new BlackJack plans exceeded our substantial server bandwidth. A kind Burner rapidly stepped up to re-host our mother ship with 10x more capacity – yay community! (THE AMAZING) DAVID NORMAL BRINGING HIS ART BACK TO BRC AFTER 10 YEARS

May we just say: Wow. David Normal writes:

“I’m looking forward to presenting my work in the Cafe’ this year. It will be nice to bring my work back to the Playa after a decade.

It is also (as ever) a challenge. I need more support for the project, and so I’ve put together this Kickstarter page:

http://normal.bz/401/2010/07/the-illuminations/

It would be great if you could put an announcement about the “Illuminations” in Jackrabbit Speaks, if you don’t mind.

My blog page for the project is here:

KINETIC CAB COMPANY CAR WASH – FAIRFAX, CA – JULY 31

Yes, a car wash. Katy writes:

“The Kinetic Cab Company will be having a fund-raising car wash at Peri’s, 29 Broadway in Fairfax, CA on July 31st.

The car wash will start at 11AM and last until around 4PM. Acoustic music will be live in the back yard and there will be fat, homemade juicy burgers for sale. Round out your day and see Honey Dust playing live that night at 19 Broadway.

Come on out, support a great cause and relax while we shine your car, fill your belly and soothe your soul.”

IRA WEINSCHEL’S PHOTO GALLERY & VIDEO OF THE 2009 TEMPLE

Ira was the official documentarian for the 2009 Temple project (Fire of Fires). He writes:

“I’ve got a small collection of my favorite Temple shots on my personal site: http://sevenstarphoto.com and there’s a larger set of photos on the Community Art Makers blog, http://communityartmakers.com/?tag=temple

A few highlights include:
• “Making the Fire of Fires” – A short video assembled from still photos taken during the building of the Temple. It includes shots from our fundraisers in Austin and Houston, our build in Austin during one of the hottest summers on record and the month we spent putting it all together on-playa (all the way through to the Temple burn on Sunday night).
• Pre-event photos/blog postings from the playa
• A 360-degree Flash panorama shot from dead center of the Temple site on our 2nd day on the playa. A great look at the open playa before the city gets built.”
