{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Hi everybody! Hope your Thanksgiving went swimmingly, and you’re gearing up well for the holiday onslaught. Speaking of which …

The registration period for the Burning Man ticket Pre-Sale started on Monday … but don’t worry, it runs until December 9th at midnight (PST). So if you want to buy some tickets to gift folks for the holidays, this is your chance. Visit http://tickets.burningman.com to register.

And may we suggest that if you’re getting in the Pre-Sale just to up your chances of getting a ticket at ALL this year, you might want to reconsider that? We’ve made the Pre-Sale tickets the most expensive because we wanted to discourage people from using the Pre-Sale to “game the system” … we really do want to serve people who want to gift tickets for the holidays, and can afford to pay for more expensive tickets to subsidize our lower-cost tickets.

So are you anxious about getting tickets this year? We hear you. The term “lottery” certainly freaked people out, as it implies ONE winner, when in fact, we’re distributing tens of thousands of tickets. We have some more thoughts on that below, offering some perspective to help you feel more at ease … take a read through, take a deep breath, and don’t worry. While we understand change is upsetting — and this new system is a big change — we believe based upon our analysis that most participants who want a ticket will be able to get one.

The Man burns in 277 days! And we’re looking forward to seeing YOU there.

I’M ANXIOUS ABOUT GETTING A BURNING MAN TICKET THIS YEAR. WHAT DO I DO?

Don’t panic. While we understand everybody’s eager (and perhaps anxious) to secure themselves a ticket for 2012, it’s important to remember that we’re selling AS MANY OR MORE tickets than we did in 2011, only through different mechanisms than in the past. There are in reality upwards of five different ways you could acquire tickets:

– You can get ’em in the holiday Pre-Sale now … register, and we’ll do a random drawing from all entries to distribute 3,000 tickets.
– You can get ’em in the Main Sale in January … just register, and we’ll do a random drawing for 40,000 tickets.
– We’ll have a first-come, first-served Open Sale of 10,000 tickets (plus whatever’s left over from the Main Sale) in March.
– Then there’s the inevitable aftermarket from Burners like yourselves who either sell their extras, or realize they can’t attend, and sell them. (We’re anticipating this will be a big market, and we’re working on a system that helps you buy and sell them more safely.)
– Finally, if you’re particularly financially constrained, we’ve also got a Low Income Ticket Program that’ll start up after the Main Sale … it requires filling out a written application for our hard-working ticket folks to review by hand.

We really do believe that with all these mechanisms to get tickets, most everybody’s needs will be met. We worked very hard on this, weighing many variables, and determined that this solution would serve the community’s myriad needs at this time.

Inevitably, there’s going to be something that doesn’t work perfectly, and we are committed to learning from our experience and improving things for the future. We’ll continue to study and evolve our systems to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our community. In fact, when you go to register for tickets, you’ll be asked to fill out a quick 12-question survey, which will help us learn more about you and your purchasing patterns, providing important data for our ongoing considerations and system improvements.

If you still have questions or concerns about the ticket process this year, chances are they’re answered in our Ticket FAQ: http://bit.ly/vQ25T9 … or somebody’s discussing them on this ePlaya thread: http://bit.ly/tcXWEW .

Thanks for hanging in there with us through all this … luckily, Burners are nothing if not adept at adapting to a shifting landscape (and the occasional whiteout dust storm).

BOOK RELEASE: THE EPHEMERAL ARCHITECTURE OF BURNING MAN

LadyBee passed this on to us … and congratulations to our friend Philippe … he’s been working on this project for a loooong time, and it’s great to see it come to fruition.

“The first book on Burning Man architecture has arrived!

From 1996 to 2010, French photographer and long-time Burner Philippe Glade documented more than 170 ephemeral dwellings, camps, and structures of Black Rock City.

This books presents for the first time a comprehensive selection of those solutions – and a comprehensive resource list.

16 years in the making, 196 photos, 112 pages, 11”x 8.5” softcover, $29. The book can be previewed and purchased here: www.realpaperbooks.com.”

BURNING MAN 2011 VIDEO BY KELSEY WINTERKORN

Here’s a pretty sweet video from Kelsey Winterkorn, from her fourth year on playa. It’s got some great footage of fire performances, dancing at big ol’ theme camps, and LOTS AND LOTS OF FIRE from three different burns (The Man, the Temple and the Trojan Horse). Good times. Enjoy …

DISTRIKT CAMP OFFERING AN ART GRANT

The good folks over at DISTRIKT (the super fun day-party theme camp), write to tell us about this idea they had …

“From its inception ten years ago, DISTRIKT’s (originally, The Deep End) goal has been to provide a great daytime vibe of music, dancing, and alternative arts at Burning Man. We live and breathe our ideals year around, and look forward to giving back to the community that has inspired and bonded us together.

We continue to look for new ways to evolve within the Burning Man culture we hold so dearly. In early 2011, we became The Deep End 501(c)(3) non-profit. For 2012, we are pleased to announce the first ever DISTRIKT Art Grant!

We will provide up to $5000 for one or more art installations to be showcased at DISTRIKT during Burning Man 2012. The art should blend and interact with DISTRIKT (i.e.- extremely fragile nighttime-oriented installations won’t make sense at a crowded and energetic camp operating during the day.) Other than that, the sky’s the limit!

As with grants from BRAF or Burning Man itself, this is not a commission — the art is yours to keep. We simply provide funding and a venue within which to showcase your creation. Though we’d love to have you, camping with or becoming a member of DISTRIKT isn’t a requirement.

If you’re interested and feel your installation would be a good fit at DISTRIKT, please follow the following instructions.

Timeline/Process:
Email Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to grants (at) distriktcamp (dot) org no later than December 31st 2011.
The LOI should include the following information
Name of artist or collective
Name phone number, email address, and mailing address of contact person
Name of project or program
Amount requested up to $5000
Brief description of project, and how it fits the ethos of DISTRIKT (400 words or less)
Attachment or link to images or conceptual drawings
Invitations for proposals, along with further instructions, will be extended no later than January 15th, 2012.
Proposals are accepted by invitation only, and are due February 17th, 2012
Selected grantees are notified March 1st, 2012
Initial funding released to new grantees by March 15th, 2012

As with any new process, no doubt there will be questions, please feel free to email us atgrants (at) distriktcamp (dot) org and we will do our best to respond quickly.

We’re thrilled to take this step forward, to evolve, and mature€¦to give back at a new level.

Now bring it on!!

With love,
Your DISTRIKT Governors”
