{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** YES! The theme is here!

But first (it’s important!): The registration period for the Burning Man 2012 ticket Main Sale wrapped up last Sunday night, and our ticket vendor is currently de-duping and cleaning up the registrant database (including removing known scammers), before we do the drawing for the three pricing tiers on January 31 and February 1.

And guess what? Turns out, people are VERY EAGER to go to Burning Man this year. So much so, in fact, that they found creative ways to increase their odds of getting tickets in the Main Sale. As a result, there are a lot more tickets being requested than there are tickets available — an inordinately large number, in fact, and far more than we projected even after last year’s sold-out event. It seems that people a) likely got their friends, family and campmates to order tickets as well, and/or b) requested more tickets than they actually need.

So the unfortunate net result is that there will be a lot of people who aren’t awarded tickets from the Main Sale … BUT DO NOT FEAR!! Because this means that there will be a large number of tickets in circulation within the existing community, tickets that simply need to be redistributed to those who need them. And we have information about how we’re going to help you all do that, while thwarting scammers and scalpers, below.

It’s up to all of us to decide how this all plays out … we can work together in our communities to ensure that most everybody who wants a ticket to Burning Man can get one, and avoid falling prey to third-party price gouging. Just as we’re able to create the world’s largest Leave No Trace event — against all odds, in the middle of the remote desert — we can see this challenge through together as well. Read on to learn how we can make this happen.

The Man burns in 218 days, and we expect to see YOU there.

BURNING MAN 2012 ART THEME: FERTILITY 2.0

Burning Man’s art theme for 2012 will be Fertility 2.0, wherein we contemplate the tendency of any being or living system to create abundant life.

THE LATEST BURNING MAN TICKET INFORMATION

Here’s the latest on the Main Sale for tickets to Burning Man 2012, which will be wrapped up by February 1 …

It is clear that many people seeking Burning Man tickets for 2012 padded their odds by requesting more tickets than they need, and having friends, family and campmates ALSO register, ALSO requesting more tickets than they need. There are an unexpectedly high number of registrants, and they are requesting 1.7 tickets/person on average.

As a result, a significant number of people will not be awarded tickets in the Main Sale.

And while it may seem at first blush that there’s a shortage of tickets available, the reality is that there are now a lot of tickets held by our community that will now simply be redistributed to those who need them. Based on analysis we hold a strong belief that things will settle out over the course of time, once that redistribution takes place, such that most everybody who wants a ticket will find their way to one.

In order to facilitate the redistribution of those extra tickets now in circulation, we have set up the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP). The STEP is a web-based system that will allow Burners to sell their unneeded tickets, and Burners wanting tickets to access them. This will allow for safe and secure transactions in a central place for community-monitored, face-value resales.

We would like to reinforce that we all share responsibility for preventing the scalping of Burning Man tickets. Burners can commit to only selling their tickets at face value, and to never buying tickets above face value. Friends don’t let friends buy from scalpers! We can work together by using STEP, keeping a vigilant eye out for scams and inflated-price vending, and reporting known scammers on our ePlaya ticketing thread, here:

http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewforum.php?f=290

As always, you can find full information about Burning Man tickets on our ticket page:

http://tickets.burningman.com

… and there’s more about it here on the Burning Blog:

http://bit.ly/z7oHsg

Burning Man actively discourages the use of secondary resources (eBay, Craigslist, StubHub, etc.) for the resale of tickets, and we encourage those who do not obtain tickets from the Main Sale/Open Sale to utilize community-centric sources to keep a handle on this process together. Please use STEP and/or direct local connections to known Burners to find the tickets you seek. We will post information on how to access STEP next week.

BRC DEPARTMENT OF MOBILITY IS HERE FOR MOBILITY-IMPAIRED BURNERS!

Dani writes:

“Just wanted to let our community know that there is a camp for your mobility-impaired Burners.

I’m The Rat Lady and I am finally home! I know I thought for 15 years that I could never go to Burning Man. I use a wheelchair, don’t have access to a generator and thought when it came to Burning Man, it is just too big, too dusty, to hard without a Cabana Boy (& I know I can’t afford one of those!). Well, I discovered last year that it IS possible for me to go to the Burn!!

The Black Rock City Department of Mobility Camp is a Theme camp dedicated to gifting mobility services to our mobility-impaired Burners. It’s by no means a luxury Camp, we are still dusty, many of our members bring small tents to do their camping, it’s still hot and cold, but we do make it possible!

We are on an electric grid, important if you need to recharge a mobility scooter, wheelchair/powerchair, oxygen concentrator, c-pap machine etc., Our camp is wheelchair friendly, all of our paths are designed with chairs and golf carts in mind. Our Sun Shower rig is wheelchair accessible by a ramp. Our kitchen area is wheelchair friendly as well.

For the city at large, we take out our fleet of mutated vehicles that can hold up to 14 at a time, with up to 5 wheelchairs, 4 times a day for deep playa art tours, so that the mobility impaired among us still have access to the Temple, The Man and the ART! We also shuttle out to the two main burns and some smaller burns as well.

This year we would like to expand into “Short Bus” service along “D” street from the 3 and 9 o’clock plazas to the three Arctic Ices, the three medicals, post office, Playa Info, The Man and our Camp in center camp. For those wheelies that are camping with others, you might want to position yourself near “D” Street.

We currently have room in our Camp for 25+ Burners in wheelchairs and 15 with mobility scooters and we can always welcome some able bodies too. Everyone is expected to do as much as they are able to contribute to our mission.

Please share this information with your friends and Camp members so that they can share it with their friends who always thought they could never come! Or with those able bodies who have a driving desire to make things inclusive for all! We would welcome both! Camp dues go toward in camp services, with anything left over going toward our Community Services for all, including those temporarily impaired.

We are also seeking financial donations toward our goals of the “Short Bus Line” and infrastructure, for the “Short Bus Line” others with Art Cars to expand our community services. If your Camp would like to help get the Line going please contact us.

If you would like to do a fund raiser to help toward the “Short Bus Line” , or bring your own “Short Bus”/Art Car, or help us in any way, we would welcome anything most gratefully.

If any of you have an Art Car with wheelchair access, we would love to have you camp with us or if it’s a very large Art car, coordinate with us to stop by our Camp, so that the mobility impaired can ride.

Our Website is http://BlackRockCityMobility.org It is still being added to, but can give a lot of info right now. Feel free to contact us at brcmobility (at) gmail (dot) com with any questions or to apply to join our camp! Please no Spam!

THE FIRST UNOFFICIAL BORDER BURNERS “ORPHAN BURN”

Here’s a great story we’d like to pass along from the Burning Blog … as our global community has grown, we’ve heard about more and more “Orphan Burns”, where Burners who can’t make it to the playa for Burning Man get together to celebrate on Burn night. Here’s one that happened in El Paso last year:

IS BURNING MAN A “WHITE PEOPLE THING”?

Caveat explores an interesting socio-cultural question around Burning Man …

“A close friend of mine was asking me about Burning Man. She’s a black woman from Brooklyn. ‘Nope,’ she said eventually, with some frustration. ‘I don’t think I’ll be going to Burning Man!’

‘Why not?’ I asked. She should. She’s magnificent.

‘It’s a white people thing!’

Whoa. I asked her to tell me more about that.”

OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO AT BURNING MAN

In the last JRS, we neglected to include the link to this video … because we’re STOOOPID. So let’s try this again, shall we?

Here’s a definite nominee for the best Burning Man video of 2011 … and it’s proving to be one of the most viral videos we’ve seen yet, getting picked up outside our community like a puppy at a bridal shower:

AROMATHERAPY ENTHUSIASTS: JOIN IN THE AROMATHERA POTTY PROJECT

Tracey writes:

“Burners have said that there’s no sense of smell on the Playa.
Yet visitors to the porta potties testify otherwise.
I am Tracey of Lamay Camp, Kidsville and last year I ‘found my Gift’.

I had brought some essential oils and essential oil blends I created to the Playa to scent my tent for hypnotherapy experience sessions. Finding my visit to our local porta potties less than inspirational, I scented every third porta potty with a blend and put a sign up on the outside of the door indicating the blend and its all-botanical ingredients. When I returned a few hours later to check on the scented porta potties, I found line ups for them! Soon, the Aromathara Potties were the talk of Kidsville. One person even said that it was the highlight of his Burn! So I started to think: What if Aromathera Potties appeared all over Black Rock City? What if aromatherapy enthusiasts shared their gifts at their local porta potties throughout the Burn?

So here’s the deal with the Aromathera Potty Project: 1. Contact me so we can get on the same page and so that I can get an overview of the spread of the Project.

2. Select/collect/create a handful of blends or singles (I suggest 30ml of each) to scent your local porta potties with. Here are the “Anarres Emo Oils” I used: http://www.anarreshealth.ca/catalog/3/essential_oils?page=3 I suggest every third or fourth porta potty to make the job manageable for you and to ensure that scent averse folks have a choice not to use an Aromathera Potty.

3. Create non moopy signs to post on the Aromatherapy Potties. Bring 2 per blend in case one goes missing. Be sure that the signs state boldly ‘Aromathera Potty Project’, name the blend in a fun but accurately evocative way (‘Furry Forest’ rather than ‘Fun Fur’ for an evergreen blend) and list all of the ingredients with the common and latin botanical names so that we don’t endanger anyone with allergies to specific botanicals. NO SYNTHETIC SCENTS OR PERFUMES, PLEASE AS THESE ARE ALLERGENIC AND NOT NATURAL AND NOT AROMATHERAPEUTIC ETC.

4. Once on the playa, implement your Aromathera Potty Project at your local porta potties! Visit every 4 hours or so, tidy your porta potty and flick drops of essential oil goodness on the walls. It only takes a few minutes and you’re done!

5. Marvel at the line ups at ‘your’ scented Aromathera Potties! Bask in praise, directed and overheard! Rejoice in the gift you are bringing to the Playa Experience!

FORUMS FOR REGISTERING THEME CAMPS – SF, CA (+WORLDWIDE) – FEB 15, MAR 24

We are hosting an important offerings of forums – the first ones ever held for Burning Man Theme Camps!

The first forum is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15th, 6-9 PM Pacific Time. That’s the date that the 2012 Placement questionnaire goes live. At least one subsequent forum – covering the same topics – will be Saturday in March 24th, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Pacific Time, to accommodate east coast and international time zones participants. The Placement questionnaire closes April 26th.

Our event is growing, and with that growth comes challenges for both the Burning Man organization and you. Our departmental leadership group and the Placement team have considered what topics would benefit the most from a dialog with you, with the goal of better setting expectations, and making things easier and more successful on the playa.

Topics to be presented to assist your success as a theme camp producer will include:

o Tips for successful filing of the Placement questionnaire
o How to get through Gate with ease: early arrivals, carpools, deliveries, & “outside services”
o Ensuring a safe space for your visitors
o Acculturating outside services for ‘plug & play’ camps
o Heavy construction equipment: self-sufficiency, sharing with other camps
o Meeting Health Department compliance
o How to successfully de-MOOP and leave no trace: @ BRC and in surrounding communities

We hope you can join us in person at BMHQ in San Francisco (limited seating), or via webcast and phone. RSVP Call-in and web-in information to follow:

We are using last year’s placement camps list to invite camps to these forums. Please contact placement (at) burningman (dot) com if you are a new or returning camp that wasn’t on the playa in 2011.

Thank you!

– 2012 Placement team

FROSTBURN REGIONAL EVENT – PITTSBURGH, PA – FEB 17-20

Frostburn (http://frostburnpgh.com/index.html) takes place 50 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA over Presidents’ day weekend: February 17-20th 2012. Online ticket sales are open until Feb. 13.

When a group of Pittsburgh Burners thought to themselves: “What makes Burning Man special?” the answer was resounding: harsh conditions, amazing art, good people. And what harsh conditions were available? Winter, of course…cold, snowy, Pittsburgh winter. And thus “Frostburn” was born.

Imagine the climatic opposite of Burning Man: a frozen forest where ice and snow join fire and steam as mediums… where sharing warmth is not just a figure of speech, but a necessity. Where radical self-reliance and communal effort are critical for human survival…
