{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Here we are, as unbelievable as it seems, almost at the Burnal Equinox! There are a couple celebrations we know about this weekend, including the San Francisco Burnal Equinox Flambe Lounge (http://bit.ly/wbnAwI) and an all-day event up in Nevada City, CA that sounds really fun (details below). We’re sure there are others happening around the world … maybe you could create your own? Fantastic excuse to get together with fellow Burners and would-be Burners and spark some fires, if we do say so.

We’re happy to report that Burning Man’s Art Grant review committee has been cranking away at (a record) 350+ applications for art grants this year, and they’re telling us that there are some spectacular projects that will be created for Burning Man 2012. We’re thrilled that interest in contributing creativity has grown in 2012! Are you planning to come but don’t yet know what you’ll contribute? See “Participate” below for a guide to ePlaya’s discussion threads helping to connect projects with participants.

In related news, we’ve got a great article below about a young Rhode Island School of Design student who’s working on his first Burning Man art car … and this guy sounds like he really gets it! Honestly, it was a welcome bright spot amidst this ticket experience … when you’re in the thick of it, it can be easy to forget what Burning Man is all about, and it really helps right now to get these reminders.

Speaking of tickets, we’ve been hard at work at BMHQ, figuring out the big plans and minute details of how to best handle ticketing from here on out. We’re ready to launch the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) this week. We’ve got your details about how it’ll work below … be sure to read it carefully and completely if you’re looking to participate in that program. That said, we really do wish there were tickets available for everybody who wants to attend, and we are equally bummed that that’s not the case – but the work hasn’t stopped on how to solve tickets for 2012 and beyond — we thank you for continuing to provide us with ideas, feedback, support, and constructive criticism. We truly wish you the best of luck in finding YOUR ticket to Black Rock City this year.

The Man burns in 186 days.

ROLLING OUT THE STEP SYSTEM THIS WEEK

This post is also published on the Burning Blog, and we welcome your comments and feedback there: http://bit.ly/yAmZX2

Burning Man’s Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) launches this week. STEP is an online system that facilitates the safe resale of tickets that have been purchased directly from Burning Man, and is designed to provide a hassle-free, secure way of buying and selling Burning Man tickets while avoiding scammers, counterfeits and scalpers.

We’ve created a comprehensive FAQ about STEP (http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php) that will answer any questions you may have about the program … but we wanted to let you know how it’s going to roll out this week so you can plan accordingly. Here’s how it will go:

On Wednesday, February 29 at 12 noon PST, STEP will be opened to those who have tickets they want to sell. We’ll be emailing everybody who bought tickets through our Pre-Sale or Main Sale in the next two days, inviting you to sell your extra tickets into STEP. If you’re one of these people, watch your inbox for that email (if you don’t get an email by Thursday, visit http://tickets2.burningman.com/contact.php and select “Missing STEP email” from the drop down menu). People selling tickets into STEP will be credited the face value of the ticket and any delivery fees, but not the original service fees; Burning Man will cover the credit card merchant fees for the refund. You’ll be able to sell your tickets into STEP anytime until August 7, 2012 (if they are being held at Will Call), after which STEP will be closed.

On Friday, March 2 at 12 noon PST, we’ll open up STEP to those looking to buy tickets. Those who registered for the Pre-Sale and Main Sale but did not receive tickets will receive an invitation to join the “want tickets” queue, on a first-come first-served basis. If you are one of those people, watch your inbox for an email containing sign up information in the next two days (if you don’t get an email by Thursday, visit http://tickets2.burningman.com/contact.php and select “Missing STEP email” from the drop down menu). When you opt to turn your original Pre-Sale or Main Sale registration into a sign up for the “want tickets” list, you will be signed up as requesting the same number of tickets through STEP as you originally requested.

When a ticket becomes available through STEP, the person at the front of the queue will be sent an email giving them an opportunity to purchase the ticket(s). Tickets will be sold at face value of the original ticket, plus service ($6/ticket + $1/order) and Will Call delivery fees ($12/order). You will only be offered the next ticket(s) available; we’re not able to maintain three queues for three separate ticket price points, so you will only have the option of whatever price point comes up next in the queue. If you decline the ticket(s) or fail to purchase them within 72 hours of their becoming available, the next person in the queue will be given the opportunity to purchase them. If you decline a ticket or do not act, you will lose your place in the queue and will not be able to sign up again.

All tickets purchased through STEP will be held at Will Call for pick up and are nontransferrable; if you purchase a ticket through STEP but then decide you cannot attend the event, you can sell it back into STEP for somebody else to purchase before August 7, 2012, but you will not be able to select your buyer yourself (eg. sell to a friend) or give your STEP ticket away.

If you have any questions, please review the FAQ.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY PHYSICAL TICKETS?

We’ve been getting this question a lot, so we thought we’d answer it here: We’ll be sending out all physical tickets in June this year. If you purchase tickets through the STEP system or the Low Income process, your tickets will be held at Will Call.

For more information about tickets, visit http://tickets.burningman.com, and our FAQ:

NEW DEPARTMENT OF MUTANT VEHICLES SOUND POLICY

The BRC DMV is happy to announce the freshly minted Mutant Vehicle Sound Policy. We were grateful to receive participant feedback during the 2011 Feedback Loop regarding sound on MV’s, and have created this new policy to help guide Mutant Vehicle owners and others in creating the best experience for the greatest number of people in BRC.

If you are planning on registering a Mutant Vehicle this year, note that there will also be a few additional questions about your sound system on the questionnaire, so be ready for it!

We look forward to seeing your vehicles in Black Rock City in 2012!

RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN STUDENT CREATING “PROJECT PINWHEEL” ART CAR

“Josh Shiau, a student at Rhode Island School of Design, is taking part in a project to create and display a giant sculpture using 100% recycled materials and crowdsourced art from everyday people across the world.

Project Pinwheel, Shiau said, will be used as a statement on our commitment to a sustainable future and the power of community. The sculpture – an ‘Art Car’ which will serve numerous purposes including vehicle, shelter, and art – will be on display in the Burning Man (event) in Black Rock, Nevada.

“I am a 9 year Veteran Burner & a photographer. I also have done a few interactive installations on the Playa. I have been meaning to share my photographic work with the JRS for a while now. Your interview with George Post reminded me to do so. I have 182 images in my ‘We Call it Black Rock City’ portfolio on my website. I would love if you could share it with the community.

SPAMARINE MUTANT VEHICLE FEATURED IN KILLER RV UPGRADES

We loved this art car … super clever and well executed. Dan writes:

“The Travel Channel (with BRC LLC permission) did a show (“Killer RV Upgrades”) that featured several artcars/mutant-vehicles from Burning Man 2011, including mine, the SpaMarine (http://facebook.com/SpaMarine).

As with any project of this scope, the SpaMarine was a group effort. Thank you to everyone who helped create it, run it, and enjoy it onsite!”

PROJECTS SEEKING PARTICIPANTS AND VICE VERSA

Trilobyte is one of our administrators/moderators on the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com), and he’s awesome. He writes:

“I wanted to share some ePlaya links with you. This year, a lot of camps and projects are facing some serious challenges in recruiting members to help them cover their essential needs. In years past, we’ve had ‘artists seeking stages’ and ‘stages seeking artists’ threads to help people connect on the boards, and to help meet the challenge in 2012 I’ve created a couple new sticky threads.

Theme Camps Seeking Participants
http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?f=283&t=54139

Art Projects Seeking Participants
http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?f=282&t=54140

Mutant Vehicles Seeking Participants
http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewtopic.php?f=293&t=54142

Please feel free to pass those links along as you see fit. They’re intended for camp and project leaders (or their representatives) to post listings to the community. ePlaya has nearly 37,000 members (more than 10K of those users have joined since last summer), those ranks include a lot of good people who want to help and participate.”

APRIL CAMPOUT FOR WISCONSIN BURNERS – MANITOWOK, WI – APRIL 20-22

Russian Wulfgar, our Wisconsin Regional Contact, writes:

“The April Campout for Wisconsin Burners: the dates are April 20-22, 2012, a two night stay – Friday night and Saturday night, leave on Sunday. Room enough for about 30 people in two cabins at Point Beach State Park. We’ll have Burning Man style campout with art, music, fire performing, building and burning and effigy, costumes, flow arts like hooping and poi spinning, and good ol’ fashioned interaction!

Start thinking about how we all can contribute to make it a really great Burning Man experience for Wisconsinites. Building of an effigy – what should it be? Fire dancing – will YOU dance with fire? Theme camps – yeah, what about theme camps? Costumes – OHHH YEAH !!!! Art ART ArT aRT arT let’s bring it, build it, paint it, make it, BURN IT! Music – who wants to dance I DO somebody bring music dammit! Hula hoops and poi, staff and fans, what have you, let’s teach other tricks and just mess around hitting ourselves, no formality, just fun. What else? Whatever you decide to make of it, it’s yours for the making.
