{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Every time somebody mentions it at BMHQ, you can hear the clunking of jaws hitting the floor — it’s the middle of May and BURNING MAN IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! Gah good lordy. Here we go, people!

We’re entering high planning season, folks … theme camps are pulling their plans together, artists are cranking away as we speak, the annual fundraising cycle is ramping up to full swing, mutant vehicle owners are kicking their tires (oh, and the deadline for applying to DRIVE that mutant vehicle on playa is Tuesday May 15th at noon, so heads up!), and Burner vets are helping out Newbies all over the place to get clued in to the ways and philosophies of Burning Man.

Speaking of which, if you are a newbie (or know of one), a good place to start digging into the nuts and bolts of Burning Man and Black Rock City is our First Timer’s guide … it’s a handy collection of links to key content in the Burning Man website (which is BIG, and BROAD, and DEEP with great info — consider the FTG your roadmap!). Pass it on: www.burningman.com/first_timers.

And with that, we’ll send you headlong into this edition of the JRS, with our best wishes for all your planning efforts. We hope you’re getting as excited as we are, ‘cuz from everything we’re hearing and seeing, there’s going to be some incredible stuff coming to Black Rock City this year.

And if you’re still looking for a ticket, don’t give up … keep in touch with your friends, family and community and watch for people’s extra tickets to float to the surface. Best of luck!

The Man burns in 113 days!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: BURNING MAN 2012 STICKER DESIGN CONTEST

Our 2012 sticker team writes:

“Hello dusty-hearted friends and fellow playa-schwag-ophiles!

Lost in a memory of past playa experience, staring blankly at your water bottle and the fun, funky sticker you received when you rolled through the Greeter’s Station last year tacked lovingly to it? Looking forward to remembering this year’s Fertilizingly Creative Fun for years to come?

What better way to remember your great experiences on playa than with eye catching, sticky, sticker schwag?! Participate in the artfully affecting playa ephemera through submitting YOUR design in our annual Sticker Contest.

This is the official call for designs for the 2012 Burning Man stickers. Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. Other designs will become official sticker schwag passed out on-and-off the playa throughout the year.

Things to know:

1. Your sticker designs can vary in size from 2.25″ x 5.5″ to 3″ x 3″. Round designs MUST measure 3″ in diameter.

2. Please incorporate both the name Burning Man and the year 2012 into your design.

3. Sticker designs are limited to five colors. Please design accordingly.

4. Round stickers are given priority for winning the coveted “Gate Sticker” spot, going out to ALL Black Rock Citizens. Other sticker sizes are printed out and handed out to volunteers throughout the year both in Black Rock City and at other Regional events.

5. Whichever type of sticker tickles your fancy (or maybe your very ticklish and want to enter several designs), remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme. Read up on the Fertility 2.0 theme! http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm12_theme.html

6. Wondering how to get your sticker designs to us? Please send a color separated Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file to stickers (at) burningman (dot) com. No other file types will be accepted. Whether sending your design or questions, please put your first and last name in the subject header as well as the phrase “2012 Sticker Submission”.

7. The deadline for design submissions is Monday, June 4th.

Why? Because we all just love getting fabulous playa schwag to help us remember our wonderful home in the desert even when we’re away throughout the year. So, don’t hesitate. Participate (by Monday, June 4th, 2012)!

Thank you and good luck! We can’t wait to see what wonderful designs you’ve got for us!

-The 2012 Sticker Contest Peeps”

MARIE VLASIC’S BLACK ROCK PORTRAIT PROJECT

Marie writes:

“I’d like to share the study paintings for my Black Rock Portrait Project. The project is coming along nicely with 14 oil painting studies and one large painting completed so far. A return trip to complete the project is planned for this year’s Burn. If you see me on the Playa, camera in hand, come get shot, you may be immortalized in a painting! www.blackrockportraitproject.com, just click the ‘Paintings’ link at the top of the page.

Thank you!”

“BEFORE I DIE…” BRAF EXHIBITION AND ARTIST’S TALK IN RENO

The Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) proudly announces the installation of artist Candy Chang’s interactive mural, Before I Die… , at two locations in downtown Reno. The murals will be displayed at two locations, on a wall at Sierra St and Island Avenue, and on another in front of Apex Products at 415 East Fourth Street in Reno, Nevada. This is BRAF’s sixth public art installation produced in collaboration with the Reno community and with the support of the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission.

Before I Die… is an interactive public art project that transforms neglected spaces into public venues for constructive conversation and empowering self-expression.

The murals are approximately 40 feet wide by eight feet tall. Walls are painted with black chalkboard paint. Stenciled on the walls is the phrase “Before I Die I want to __________,” dozens of times. Using the chalk provided, people may write in their response to the prompt. The resulting completed phrases vary greatly, reflecting the diversity of the participating individuals.

Join artist Candy Chang for a public talk, inaugurating the debut of her interactive mural project, Before I Die… in Reno, NV. Hear Chang speak about her work, her life experiences, and the meaning of the project.

Black Rock Arts Foundation and Black Rock Design Institute Presents:
Candy Chang Before I Die…
May 17, 2012, 5:00 P.M – 7:00 P.M.
Nevada Museum of Art
160 West Liberty Street, Reno, Nevada, 89501

“FACE FORWARD” HONORARIUM ART INSTALLATION

Laughing Squid has a nice post up about “Face Forward”, an honorarium art installation from 2011, including some cool video of the piece in action (in case you, like us, never got to see it actually running on playa … timing is everything!). Enjoy …

BURN WALL STREET ART INSTALLATION IN SF WEEKLY

“Burn Wall Street”: Otto von Danger Politicizes His Art

“They were upset about what the banks are doing,” the Oakland artist (real name Otto Ewen) explained. “We all are.” But von Danger is famous for blowing stuff up on an epic scale, like the city façade Megatropolis at 2010’s Burning Man. “Just a bank is kind of blasé,” he says.

PICTURES FROM THE SIXTH ANNUAL AFRIKA BURN

Enjoy some awesome images from Afrika Burn by Stu Shapiro. Inspired by Eric Schwabel’s “Human Light Suit” project, Stu built his own photographic contraption and starting clicking away in Tankwa Town. Set deep in the Karoo, the festival is a hip-trippy delight- with a conscience. Much like the infamous Burning Man Festival in the Nevada Desert, Afrika Burn promotes authentic expression and a money-free society based on a “giving economy”. Begun in 2007, it’s been going strong for six years.

Thank you, Stu, for these awesome images!

A CAPPLAYA VOCAL ENSEMBLE SEEKS SINGERS

Bonnie writes:

“A CAPPLAYA, Burning Man’s organic soundtrack for eight years running, is searching the dusty crevices of this year’s cast of performers for a slightly freaky, mostly sober soprano, alto, and baritone. A capplaya is a small, tight a cappella jazz group that performs throughout the burning man event from center stage to the latter-alphabetted dusty hideouts you love to discover. Charts are distributed and memorized prior to burning man, usually five or six tunes total. Small vocal ensemble singing experience is required. If you’re interested in being a part of this live art experience or want to know more, contact bonnie (at) proteadev (dot) com. If you sing a part other than the ones listed above but this is right up your alley, shoot me a line anyway. If this year fills, we’ll be back on the playa with a new group next year! http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=acaplaya

JOIN THE SEALS OF APPROVAL! TAKE OVER THE PIER ON TUESDAY EVE ON THE PLAYA!

Have to admit, we snorted at the clubbing reference. Frannie writes with this genius idea for making the best use of The Pier art project (which is beyond awesome squared):

We can all be Seals of Approval for ART ART ART (in your best seal voice). There will be a Seal of Disapproval on hand as well. If you are not so keen on being a seal, you can always bring something to share and go clubbing!!!

CROWD-EQUITY, A NEW APPROACH TO ART AT BURNING MAN

Long-time Burning Man artist Zach Coffin, creator of COMPLETELY INSANE AND ILL-ADVISED BUT ABSOLUTELY AWESOME SCULPTURES LIKE “Colossus”, “Temple of Gravity”, and “Rock Spinner”, has come up with a clever way to fund his sculpture “The Universe Revolves Around You” this year. Check it out.

“Crowd-equity, a new approach to art at Burning Man.

Have you wanted to own a Zachary Coffin (www.zacharycoffin.com) sculpture but can’t shore up your foundations and bring in 50 ton cranes for the install? Are you looking to diversify your portfolio in a world of zero percent interest rates, market turmoil and ponzi schemes? Do you want to invest in something you believe in?

Well now is your chance. Recent changes in arcane securities law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumpstart_Our_Business_Startups_Act) is making it possible to, among other things, legally invest in something like an insanely heavy human powered merry go round (www.zacharycoffin.com/work/the-universe-revolves-around-you/). This is much like buying a share in Apple or Home Depot and with the same legal protections.

Why?

Well, it is a simple fact that the grants to make large art at Burning Man rarely cover the actual costs of the art. But in this case, the sculpture will be built to last generations and move to other locations by lease, loan or sale. By buying equity, you not only support fantastic art, you have a chance to profit when the rest of the world realizes how cool it is.

So if you are interested in investing* please contact universe (at) zacharycoffin (dot) com for more information. $500 minimum please. Outside investment limited to 30% ownership, act now.

* By investing, you assume a risk of losing some or all of your investment. Do not invest unless you can afford to do so. Really. Along with legal equity in the corporation that owns the sculpture, all investors will get a steel ownership certificate, dibs on swag, and free rides on the sculpture.”

DADARA’S TRANSFORMONEY TREE PROJECT SEEKS DONATIONS OF BANK NOTES

Dadara is back with another provocative conceptual art piece for Burning Man this year, once again challenging the nature and role of money and art in our culture — his Exchanghibition Bank in 2011 was pretty fantastic. He’s looking for your help to make it happen … not with funding, per se, but by providing bank notes to become part of the piece. As he puts it “I guess this must be the world’s first ever crowd funding campaign, which is not looking for money.” Check it out:

MAYAN TRICYCLE NEEDS A KICKSTART RIDE TO THE PLAYA

“wizzard here.

I have just launched a Kickstarter site to raise funds for my most complicated Burning Man Art Project yet. The Mayan Tricycle is my version of the Mayan Calendars, expressed using a tread-wheel within a larger wheel rotating under human power. There’s a lot more to it – check out the links below.

Please help me reach my funding goal. I have some really great rewards for you too. You can see it at http://kck.st/Ibsil1

If you would like to donate items other than money (wood, nails, transportation for piece, etc.) or would like to volunteer to be part of the crew, please email me directly at mayantricycle (at) gmail (dot) com.

ABOUT THE FILM: See 11 Years of playa art, mutant vehicles, theme camps, temples, explosions and flames. No other documentary covers it all like this.

For one week every year, 50,000 people gather in the Black Rock desert to build a temporary city of art. Founded as an experiment in radical self-expression, Burning Man is like no other place on earth. The ground rules are simple: no commerce, leave no trace, no spectators – participants only. You bring what you need to survive, and your gift of participation and art. Black Rock City, as it is called, has everything you would expect in a real city: a post office, airport, radio stations, newspapers, a café, recycling, police, fire and medical.

JOURNEY TO THE FLAMES was directed by Doug Jacobson, who follows a group of friends as they head off to the desert festival. Experience 11 years of amazing Burning Man art. Take a ride into the madness and discover a world of art, sexuality, music and fire… lots of fire.”
