{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** As the days get longer, so do the JRS newsletters … and as this community grows, there’s more and more to tell you about. Phew we got a doozie here, and another big one coming soon, chock full. Don’t blame us, blame all the awesome that’s happening out there (YOU PEOPLE NEVER REST, DO YOU?! ahem.).

So … many are speculating about whether the event will be drastically different this year, in light of ticket sales and the influx of new interest. Here’s one way to look at that question: it’s always different, and yet it’s the same. We’ve received more art grant applications than ever before, more theme camps have registered, and the number of interesting new projects is on the rise, just like every year. Those we’re talking to who are coming for the first time (and let’s be clear, there’s a big percentage of newcomers every year, not just this one) are vocal and eager about their plans for how they’ll participate in — not just attend — Burning Man. We’re coming to the conclusion that this could turn out to be one of the most interesting years yet….but that’s up to all of us, isn’t it?

Back out here in the rest of the world, we’re in the midst of Regional event season (aka the summer), and they’re flying fast and furious in our Events & Happenings section … just try and keep up with ’em all, we’ll help! Opportunities to participate in various shenanigans and projects on playa are starting to blow up here too, so if you’re wondering whether there’s going to be anything cool to do on playa? DO. NOT. WORRY. You should be worrying about having TOO MUCH to do. Now get down there and find something for you! (SNEAK PREVIEW: in the coming weeks, watch the JRS for an announcement about a very cool new way to plug in to participation! We can’t wait to tell you more…)

The Man burns in 86 (holy bajoly that’s less than 90) days. It’s officially time to get excited.

PARTICIPATE IN THE 2012 BURNING MAN RESOURCE LISTING

Once again, the JRS will publish a Resource Listing for businesses that offer goods and services that are of interest to the Burning Man community as they prepare for the event. Our goal with this is to support the cottage industry that has grown up around Burning Man over the years, particularly (but not limited to) Burner-owned businesses, as well as making our community aware of these resources and the many discounts or special offers that are shared with us each year. We limit this activity to a single issue in order to give you the freedom of choice to delete the issue if it’s not your cup of tea. We all know that there are preparations and sometimes purchases that we make to get ready for Burning Man — we’ve never said we’re against commerce, but when it comes to the JRS we do keep this activity to a single issue each year.

We are now accepting submissions ONLY via this form http://bit.ly/L7TEqv, which will close on June 15 at 12 noon PST. Late submissions will not be considered, no exceptions. The listing will be published on the Burning Man website by June 20, and we’ll post the link on the JRS, on our Facebook Page, and Twitter feeds.

(Note: We reserve the right to refuse to publish a listing on our resource page and to edit these listings, and we will not post links to businesses that aren’t directly related to resources for planning or building in BRC.)

Again, do not write to the JRS — the ONLY way we will accept your submission is if it’s entered into this form:

http://bit.ly/L7TEqv

RENO BIKE PROGRAMS – TIME TO GET ON IT!

There are three popular bike programs in the Reno area that sell or rent reliable and affordable bikes especially for life on the playa, that are now taking reservations:

Kiwanis Bike Program

If you are in need of a bike close to as well as great for the playa, reserving one from the Kiwanis Bike Program comes highly recommended. Kiwanis has a huge variety of bicycles ranging from $40-$50, and all purchases support the repairs and donation of bikes for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Moreover, if you return your bike to Kiwanis on your way home from the playa, they love it — they’ll refurbish and reuse it! Reserve your bike now as they go fast. The shop is open daily or by appointment during Burning Man to pick up your reserved bike, or to pick out a bike from those still available, before moving on to Black Rock City. For bike reservations and further information, or if you’d like to know more about their programs in northern Nevada, go to www.kiwanisbikes.org

2500 Valley Road, Suite A
Reno, NV 89512

Black Rock Bicycles

Black Rock Bicycles is highly recommended as your transportation headquarters for rentals as well as sales of bikes for the playa. Having a bicycle — especially a reliable one with comfort and style, with fat tires and a soft seat! — is a large part of the Burning Man experience and tradition, and is pretty much an essential to your overall enjoyment in Black Rock City. Located in Reno just a few hours from the playa, they offer rentals as well as sell new/used bikes at affordable prices, which have been professionally cared for by experienced bike mechanics (and Burners). Black Rock Bikes also has everything you need to be able to set your bike apart from the rest — lighting supplies, baskets, bells, locks, and many other items needed to have fun as well as be safe on the playa. This year, they have plenty of rentals, extended hours, and have moved to a new location. Please check out their website for reservations, pick-up arrangements, and for other details at: www.blackrockbicycles.com

Rat’s Bikes

After many years of service to our community, Rat’s Bikes returns to offer great used playa bikes for rent to those of us WHO LIVE AT LEAST 1000 MILES from Black Rock City. And especially to those who live overseas, as he likes to take care of those who have to make a very long journey! Best to reserve now while you can, as his supply of bikes is likely to be gone soon. To find out further information or make reservation arrangements, send an email to Rat at: nv_desert_rat (at) nvbell (dot) net

MATERIAL CULTURE / PLAYA ARTIFACTS WANTS *YOUR* PLAYA CREATIONS!

We are a gifting community. Burning Man inspires the urge to create and give. Objects are often given spontaneously for the pleasure of giving and receiving. The artifacts and gifts we give one another at Burning Man reveal a great deal about ourselves and give us information not recorded elsewhere about participants way of life, spiritual values and customs. Your treasures enrich our Material Culture archive at our San Francisco office. We love to collect and archive them.

One of the functions of the ARTery in Center Camp is to collect your artifacts and gifts. We have forms for you to fill out as well as sealed bags to store your contribution. Please come by and drop off your gifts. We catalog everything post event for the archives and eventually add them to the Image Gallery.

You can also mail your contribution to our San Francisco office.

TO FLAME BUS – BUSES TO BRC FROM RENO, SF, LA, AND SACRAMENTO

Do you live in or near LA, SF, or Sacramento? Are you without a car or ride, and not sure how you’re going to get to Burning Man? Flying into Reno from some corner of the globe? Don’t want to spend a lot of money on a rental car? Wanting to help reduce cars to the event … or just don’t want to drive? Are you still unsure how you’re going to get home from the playa?

To Flame Bus is part of a national “social mobility network” that is providing bus transportation to Black Rock City from Reno, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Return trips from BRC to these cities are also offered following Burning Man. Seats are now available to reserve at very reasonable prices, while rates will increase incrementally over the summer as Burning Man approaches. NOTE: Each bus trip will need to achieve a certain number of passengers in order to confirm, so keep that in mind in your options, while you may want to tell your friends about it too. But they’re all likely to fill. You can find out further information, ask questions, check out the many schedule possibilities, and reserve a seat by going to their website at: www.brc.toflame.com

LA CONTESSA – THE CASE GOES TO COURT

If you’ve been around for a while, you probably remember La Contessa, the magnificent Spanish Galleon that used to famously roam the playa, blowing minds wherever she went … well, here’s an update on the impending court case since she was maliciously set on fire. Katy Bell writes:

“friends, for those of you who remember the La Contessa, below is an update of the case involving her demise. the trial is set for july 30.

though our steadfast legal superhero, paul quade, is working pro-bono on the case, there are still some costs to cover (relocating greg and simon to reno for a month, costs for transporting and sheltering/feeding witnesses, covering the lawyer’s expenses to subpoena witnesses and other small expenses). we had a benefit, but didn’t raise quite enough.

we have a paypal account: LaContessaLegalFund (at) gmail (dot) com . if you are moved, we are humbly accepting donations in any amount. we need about $4000. if you donate, please make a note to us with your mailing address and you will receive a special gift with our kind regards.

please take a minute to read the press release below. join our facebook page, friends of la contessa. share your stories, feel free to post pictures. we are looking to re-enliven the magic this ship inspired in the people who saw her, rode her, and loved her. feel free to share this post with any friends or relevant lists.

i kindly thank you for your time and attention,
katy bell

AWESOME LOOKING FILM — “PEOPLE IN MOTION”

Burning Man is pretty rad. Parkour is pretty rad. Put the two together? Super rad. Cedric writes:

“We recently released an indie film, People in Motion, about the art of movement & a portion of the film focuses on Burning Man.

People in Motion has universally received excellent reviews for being heartfelt, visually engaging, & emotionally satisfying.

A few other interesting notes about the film. People can get it at our website www.PeopleInMotionMovie.com and pay what they want. Folks can also download it for free from Pirate Bay & other torrent site where we’ve posted it.

We’ve done our best to make & distribute this film in a way that resonates with the values of our community. We hope you enjoy the film & if you do, we hope you spread the word.”

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: PUT YOUR ART IN THE CAFE AT BURNING MAN 2012

Our buddy Jonesy writes:

“Greetings Burning World!

How would you like to place your art in the biggest, most populated structure on the Playa? That’s right! You have the opportunity to show off your talent & ideas in Center Camp Cafe for Burning Man 2012!

Help us enhance this environment and engage your fellow Black Rock Citizens as they sit and mingle in this popular hot spot on the Playa. We are looking for art in all shapes and sizes! If you have a sculpture that would get lost in the great expanse of the open playa, but might be appreciated in a more intimate setting, please let us know! You can also take over one of our “alcove” spaces and create your own environment or vision of “Fertility”. Sculpture or painting, large or small, please write to us and tell us what you would like to bring! Write to cafe-art (at) burningman (dot) com.

ALSO, now in its fourth year, the Cafe hosts a GIGANTIC two-dimensional wall art gallery to show paintings, photographs, and whatever you can hang on a board! If you are a painter or photographer and always felt lost in giant art world on the Playa, now is your opportunity to shine and be a part of our KIOSK project. The works must fit into a 48″ x 48″ space and extend no further than 8″ from the Kiosk surface. To see pictures of the Kiosk spaces, and other parts of the Cafe, see the Flickr gallery here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/32065929@N05/4590473966/in/set-72157624020135956/

To be a part of this beautiful and exciting environment, please see write to us at cafe-art@burningman.com,

Thanks!

THE BURNING BAND SEEKS MUSICIANS!

Carbon Buildup writes:

“The Burning Band will once again be roaming the playa in 2012 to provide musical entertainment for all kinds of events. Interested in joining up? We’re always looking for dedicated musicians to play with us. We especially could use some marching band-type drummers this year, though trombones, French horns, and bassoons would be a plus. We play old favorites, some jazz standards, and wrestle with requests. So why not apply your musical talents on the playa? Count on a good time, even in dust storms.

This will be our 17th year on the playa, so we know our business really well. Oh, and we do have some uniforms available. We’ll be camping at Snowflake Village, and we have room for a few more people willing to attend most of our gigs. Contact SINdy at flossyrabbit (at) earthlink (dot) net or Carbon Buildup at meezllz (at) gmail (dot) com for more or less info. We’re also soliciting gig requests, so let us know if you have an event you want us to play for. It can’t ALL be random….”

The list of projects seeking your help with funding is growing steadily, and we’ve captured them on our Support a Project page. Helping these folks out is a great way to participate if you’re not able to create something yourself (or even if you are), since it takes money to make these things happen, by and large (some larger than others).

We would also like to encourage people who are creating Kickstarters to think about using ethical premiums and being careful to not exploit the Burning Man experience when coming up with donation rewards … more on that can be found here: http://www.burningman.com/participate/supportaproject/raisefunds.html

HAITI COMMUNITERE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

Carmen Mauk, the Executive Director of Burners Without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org) writes:

“On the afternoon of May 3, 2012 a devastating fire broke out in the Haiti Communitere (HC) workshop. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the fire was extinguished before it spread. The workshop burned to the ground, destroying over two years of collected tool donations, five 40 foot tool containers, building supplies, medical supplies, and multiple projects in progress, totaling over $175,000 USD of damage. HC is the evolution of the BWB Pisco Project and operated primarily by Burners. The support of the Burner Community helped build this workshop and HC is putting the call out for the continuation of that support. Please read the full press release http://tinyurl.com/d4slnol. Since the fire tremendous support has poured in; donated planes, medical supplies, tools, and large Haitian led cleanups, but there still is a long way to go. Please view www.haiti.communitere.org for the latest stories and progress.

SOAK – TIDEWATER, OR – JUNE 21-24

SOAK* 2012 :: Time Travel Field Trip :: June 21-24, MMXII

Our scientists have reported the discovery of several chronocosmic time waves of unprecedented size converging on Tidewater Oregon on June 21 in the year 2012 CE. The sheer magnitude of these waves practically guarantees the opening of several large cross-time rifts connecting the Jurassic period, vaudeville, robots, Europe, new baroque, 1987, and twenty-third century Mars, all in the span of a weekend in the Oregon forest. Further scans of this location reveal lush meadows nearby, several odd geodesic structures, a creek for swimming and numerous time-loop trails to explore.

Your mission is to use your timeship to participate in this unprecedented creative clash of cultures, interact with the arts, and find out more about a group of strange people who call themselves “Burners,” known to be in the area around this datetime. Is there a connection? What will you find? Bring back evidence of your discoveries, and of course LEAVE NO TRACE. This event is a multi-day interactive arts festival and camping featuring participation, fire performances, art, DJs, live music, theme camps, workshops, Friday night burn and Saturday main effigy burn.

Mutant Rides: Origin of a Species
Masterpiece Exhibit
October 7, 2011 – July 25, 2012

They began spontaneously, a change in the genetic code, and evolved from the assembly line to an emerging species on the Black Rock Desert. The DNA of early mutations was still evident, but over time some became so radically mutated their origins were unrecognizable. These rolling works of art are now deeply entrenched in the culture of Burning Man, a festival of radical self-expression that draws thousands to a temporary city created each year in the Northern Nevada desert. Imagine a world of motorized vehicles where boundaries are limitless, imaginations rule and the bizarre becomes the norm. Experience it here – the evolution of mutant rides.”
