**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** If you haven’t received your already-purchased ticket(s), don’t fret! As we write, the last of the physical tickets sold thus far are being mailed out to their eager owners. Sending out this many tickets is a highly labor-intensive process that has taken longer than we anticipated, but our ticket vendor has been cranking through them just as fast as they can. Don’t worry, soon you will have your ticket home in your hot little hands!

So we’ve got a SOLID Jackrabbit for you today, full of really important information about such perennial fan favorites as the 2012 Survival Guide (all new!), the Black Rock City Plan for 2012 (street names!), Gate opening and closing times (new!), the BRC Census (get counted!), Turnkey camping guidelines (what the? Read on!), and the start of an ongoing conversation about how we can ALL help with the challenges we face getting in and out of Black Rock City every year (traffic, for short).

Oh, and you can help make the porta potties more … ahem … aromatically pleasing. Yyyep, we got it all.

The Man burns in 49 days! Hop to it, people!

BURNING MAN SURVIVAL GUIDE 2012 — ALL NEW AND MOBILE FRIENDLY TOO!

If you’ve received your tickets by now, you have in your possession the Burning Man Survival Guide for 2012 … and if you’ve attended Burning Man before, you’ll still want to check it out – seriously – because if you do, you’ll see that it’s undergone a significant overhaul. We really dug into it to make it easier to get the information you want. With the anticipated increase of first-time Burners this year, we want to be sure that the Survival Guide (which is mandatory reading for ALL participants, by the way) is as accessible and effective as possible.

And … we’ve also got an online and mobile friendly version!!! It’s seamlessly readable on your smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer. It’s keyword searchable and everything! You can also download the PDF version to your mobile device so you have the essential information (like where to take your trash after the Burn) at your fingertips while traveling to and from Black Rock City.

Here it is, check it out, and make sure ALL your campmates and first-timer friends do too!

Important stuff, share with your friends! Here are the official start and end times for Burning Man 2012:

– This year the eight-day Special Recreation Permit is from 6pm on Sunday, August 26th to 6pm on Monday, September 3rd. – The Gate will open at 6 PM on Sunday.

BLACK ROCK CITY 2012 CITY PLAN

The city plan for Black Rock City 2012 is now available:

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/12_maps/index.html

It includes this year’s street names (hooray!), which are quite lovely … in the spirit of Fertility, we have the following:

Esplanade Alyssum Begonia Columbine Dandelion Edelweiss Foxglove Geranium Hyacinth Iris Jasmine Kingcup Lilac

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

WHAT’S UP WITH TRAFFIC AT BURNING MAN?

Getting participants in and out of Black Rock City is one of our greatest challenges, and we figure it’s high time to share our ongoing work on the traffic front with you. The Gate, Perimeter and Exodus team are working hard throughout the year to make improvements to the system, but we can’t do it without YOUR help.

This Burning Blog post by GP&E senior manager Kristy Evans is the first in a series about this critical issue that threatens Black Rock City’s future growth. Read up and learn how you can help!

BURNING MAN CENSUS 2012 — BE COUNTED! (OR HELP COUNT)

Don’t be surprised if a group of lab coat-clad scientists descends upon your vehicle as you approach the Greeters station this year. You might just be one of the lucky ones selected by the Census Samplers! These eager burning nerds are keen to include you in a scientific probability sample of Black Rock City’s population. They’re gathering data to get a more accurate picture of who is attending Burning Man this year. Aren’t you curious to know? Learn more:

http://bit.ly/NwGHbh

The information collected is used by academics and other researchers, and is also used by the Burning Man organization to better represent the interests of the people of Black Rock City.

p.s. While we playfully call this a “census”, sticklers will note that this is actually a “survey by convenience sample”. It’s our hope and dream that someday the entirety of Black Rock City’s population will participate, making it a truly scientific census … but until then … this is what we got.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

TURNKEY CAMPING GUIDELINES

Groups of people who set up a camp at Burning Man – or hire help to set up a camp – with the explicit intention of having things ready to go in advance of the arrival of others, are engaging in what we’ve termed “Turnkey camping” (see previous posts on this topic here: http://bit.ly/NscJBL and here: http://bit.ly/NscEhA).

In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in Turnkey camping services, and the Burning Man organization has decided to address the issue by providing guidelines for these camps and their organizers. Here are our Turnkey Camping Guidelines.

We welcome your feedback via the comments on this blog post about the topic:

TO FLAME BUS – BUSES TO BLACK ROCK CITY FROM RENO, SF, LA, AND SACRAMENTO

Do you live in or near LA, SF, or Sacramento? Are you without a car or ride to Burning Man? Flying into Reno from some corner of the globe without further transportation to the playa, 2.5 hours away? Don’t want to spend a lot of money on a rental car? Wanting to help reduce cars to the event, or just don’t want to drive? Maybe you are also still unsure how you’re going to get home after Burning Man?

To Flame Bus is part of a national “social mobility network” that is providing bus transportation to Black Rock City from Reno, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Return trips from BRC to these cities are also offered following Burning Man. Seats are now available to reserve at very reasonable prices, while rates will increase incrementally as Burning Man approaches. You can find out further information, ask questions, check out the many schedule possibilities, and reserve a seat by going to their website at: www.brc.toflame.com

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

ADVANTAGE FLIGHT – WE’LL FLY YA TO THE PLAYA!

Flying into and out of Burning Man has always been one way to save the drive, avoid the lines at Gate and Exodus, and arrive like a rock star. With the record number of participants this year, it’s also a great way to keep cars off the highways and reduce pollution. Advantage Flight, a Burner-owned and -operated charter air service with over 500 playa flights logged since 2005, teamed up with several other charter operators with a goal of reducing at least 800 cars from this year’s Burn. Advantage now offers many daily non-stop flights between the BRC Airport and Reno, and then to and from the Bay and Northern California, LA and SoCal, the Pacific Northwest, and Utah. In addition to passengers, Advantage can fly in time-critical materials for build crews, such as baggage, fresh food, and other supplies.

Check out http://www.advantageflight.com/bman.html for details.

Jesus Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m. right before the Jazz Funeral Procession for the Man.

Join us in crafting spirit masks, and helping visitors to customize voodoo dolls with trinkets from the object of their desire or ire. DO YOU CUT HAIR? JOIN BARBER ELLA AS A GUEST STYLIST!

Bonnie writes:

“We’re Barber Ella Shop, the sexy, space-age barber shop located in the 9:00 plaza — and we’d love it if you came cut hair with us! We always leave a chair or two open for professional stylists who want to drop in and snip-snip-snip up awesome hairdos. Our haircut-ees are often looking for extreme new looks. Last year, more than a dozen pro stylists came to volunteer; they said they loved the opportunity to leave their stuffy customers behind and get wacky and creative.

Have pro haircutting equipment? You’re more than welcome to bring your own if you’re particular, but we also have plenty to share. Though we’d love to hear from you, there’s no need to sign up for a volunteer spot ahead of time — just come on by during any open hours and get cutting. Barber Ella Shop is open this year Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. From us and all our haircut-ees, thanks for making us look awesome!

CALLING ALL TEACHERS, GUIDES, SPEAKERS, PERFORMERS, FILM-MAKERS & ARTISTS

Jon writes:

“Play)A(Skool is dedicated to exploring the intersection between the principles of Burning Man and the default world. We are seeking Teachers and Guides to contribute to our daily curriculum of exploration where we seek to Share, Learn, Grow and Evolve through Interaction and Activity. Come share with your fellow Burners in our SkoolHouse. Last year our classes ranged from yoga and meditation, to science and metaphysics, to the art of gifting and desert survival, from urban farming to learning the cosmic formula for finding your soul mate on the Playa. This year we are looking to build on our curriculum with performances of all sorts, film premiers and more! We are GIFTING our space and production prowess to you and all of Burning Man.

Classes will be participant-driven, including games, play, discussion, and debate. The Fakulty are mere guides, seeding the discussion with their experience and technical knowledge, and encouraging the classes to focus on beyond Burning Man application of the topics. How do we take this experience of Burning Man and Bridge the Gap between Black Rock City and our communities around the world?

All talents, experiences, the silly, the serious, the esoteric and the academic are welcome to experience, teach, guide and learn together. If you want to join our band of teachers, email playaskool (at) gmail (dot) com and tell us what you have to share.”

NO SPECTATORS DAY! IS JULY 31 – HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE?

July 31 is No Spectator’s Day as officially recognized in San Francisco by Mayoral Proclamation. We kid you not!

We encourage you to personally embody the spirit of No Spectator’s Day through acts of self-expression, civic participation, and gifting. Some may choose to observe this day individually, others will involve friends and members of their community. Let your imaginations run amok in the very best of ways. On July 31st everyone is a Participant!

10 Suggested Ways to Observe No Spectator’s Day:

1) Random acts of kindness and gifting. 2) Dress expressively– why save that fairy-turnip-princess bee costume just for the playa? 3) Adopt-your-block, beach or park; invite the neighbors to a neighborhood cleanup and potluck 4) Make temporary public art and take it to the streets (but Leave No Trace after) 5) Instead of a garage sale, have an Un-Sale or “Gift-Away.” That’s right…stand around like you’re having a garage or sidewalk sale—and surprise people by GIFTING it all instead! 6) Host an Art-Parade. 7) Create an art car or bike and go for a ride! 8) Get involved with a Burning Man Art-project – see these links for artist needs: http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_brc.html and http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_honor.html 9) Volunteer at a local school, senior center or food bank. 10) Bring the spirit of Burning Man home: See these groups for ideas and ways to plug into the community year-round. http://www.burningmanproject.org , www.burnerswithoutborders.org, http://www.blackrockarts.org , www.blackrocksolar.org . Be sure to learn what is going on in your part of the world at: http://regionals.burningman.com/

Remember, it’s No Spectator’s Day! … Just Another Day of Burner Public Participation thru Artistic Creation!

Enjoy NOT spectating!
