{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** The Golden Spike is in the ground, and the DPW is on playa, creating the infrastructure of Black Rock City. We’ve just completed our final sale of 1,000 tickets to excited Burners, and we’re getting closer every day.

If you (like us) are busy with your playa planning, we direct your attention to this cool online tool that facilitates collaborative project planning … these folks created a free, customized version of the tool just for Burners — BurnerAsana. Plenty of folks we know are using it with great success. Check it out: www.asana.com/burningman.

We appreciate your keeping up with all the super-frequent and jam-packed JRSs these days — that’s just the way it goes … there’s SO much that goes into preparing for Burning Man and making it happen, and we don’t want you to lack a clue on the important stuff … and there’s a TON of important stuff. We’ve got a lot more editions coming your way in the next couple weeks, right up until you hit the road for Black Rock City. Stay strong!

Speaking of staying strong, be forewarned that this is looking to be our dustiest year in years … perhaps ever! So you’re going to want to really double down on your dust prevention efforts, kids. Goggles, dust masks (we like bandanas), plastic tubs and ziplock bags to keep your stuff dust-free (until it’s not), dust-proofing your shelter, fat-tired bikes, extra contact lenses … you get the idea. Veteran Burners will tell you that dust is always an integral part of the experience, and it’s so true … but as much as we revel in its alkaline awesomeness, it’s critical to be prepared. Woot!

The Man burns in 28 days!!

DOING A SPEAKER SERIES OR INTELLECTUAL PURSUIT ON PLAYA? LET US KNOW

Soon we’re going to be doing a round-up of all the speaker series, workshops, talks, conferences (really?) or whatever creative form of intellectual pursuit on playa, so if you’ve got one, email it to pq (at) burningman (dot) com with the subject line “INTELLECTUAL PURSUIT”, and we’ll include it (unless you’re just jerking us around, of course, which … please don’t).

CENSUS PROJECT SEEKS ANDROID PHONES FOR DATA COLLECTION

The Droids We’re Looking For … The Census Samplers would LOVE donations of old Android cell phones! We’ll use the phones to capture data when we do quick surveys of randomly sampled Burners—and we’ll be able to share the findings quickly and easily. We’re looking for Androids with an operating system of 2.3 or later, which means that if your phone was made in 2010 or later, it should work. Ideally, you’d send us the phone along with its working battery and memory card, too. We’ll load our software onto the phone, and it will be used well. You won’t get your phone back, but your donation will help the Census team create a more accurate picture of the population of Black Rock City.

Please send the phone as soon as possible to (by Aug 7)

TIME TO BURN IPHONE/IPAD APP

So very psyched about this … Terry writes:

“The 2012 version of the Time To Burn iPhone/iPad app is now available (for free) in the Apple app store. In addition to providing a handy countdown to the main event, the app includes a snapshot of the Playa Event calendar for off-line browsing, the list of registered theme camps, and the 2012 map of the city.

The app has been significantly enhanced since last year, thanks to the feedback from the Burning Man community.

Enjoy, and swing by Homojitoville (8:45 and E) to say “Hi!” or look for me at the the Billion Bunny March!

Terry”

DOWNLOAD THIS FREE GIFTING APP

Artem Peplov writes:

“We want to make burners aware of a new app that we built to facilitate giving and sharing among friends — literally bringing the Gifting culture into the default world. The app is called the givengine and is available as a free download (naturally!) in the App Store:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/givengine/id533836009?mt=8

Our small team worked pretty darn hard over the course of last year to get this sharing tool ready for our friends and families (and You!) to enjoy just in time to plan for Burning Man!

Whether you have costumes you want to pass on or equipment you’re willing to lend because you won’t make it to playa this year, we hope that you give what you don’t need and share what you’re not using. You can also offer up your time or skills to assist others.

There is no exchange of money or bartering involved. Give and you shall receive!

You can find out more at givengine.org or our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/givengine.”

RIGGING ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS AT SUSPENDED ANIMATION

Wow wow wow. If you know Suspended Animation camp, well, let’s just say they know how to tie things (and people) up. They’ve provided an incredible guide to rigging your structures on playa (THANK YOU, GUYS!) … check this out:

“The good folks at Suspended Animation pride themselves on the skill of tying things to, you know, other things. Several years on the playa have provided some hard-won lessons, and thus we give you: “How To Tie Your Camp Up And Make It Behave”, a practical guide to not being the camp whose unofficial flag is the shredded tarp, or the camp whose unofficial sculpture is entitled Dude What Happened To Our Shade Structure, Dude?

THE BLACK ROCK BEACON: BACK WITH MORE BACON

“The Black Rock Beacon is tickled a rosy pink to be announcing our 8th year serving Black Rock City with crispy and chewy morsels of news, views, and totally tangential references to pork-related products.

We will be producing five issues during the week to entertain and inform the record population of our Burning burg. The paper is produced onsite, using decade-old computers and a press in the back of a van.

Beacon Burnalists have already begun to gather information for this year’s papers but we are hungry for more. We have a long list of stories we would like to do, and we need writers to do them. There are also openings for editors, production people, illustrators, schwag-starved delivery folks, and if you’re good at assembling Playatech furniture, we need some extra chairs.

If you know us and love us from past years, please consider making a donation to support our work. We would like to increase our press run; paper and ink are among our largest expenses, and the population keeps growing. We are also in the market for an approximately 40′ by 20′ tarp or similar shade structure, and we’re willing to talk donation, rental, loan, or purchase.

No money? No time to volunteer? No problem. We exist to serve Black Rock City, we are happy if you read our paper. You can also drop by our camp just to say hi, we will be located in Center Camp, 1:15 the Inner Circle of Center Camp, right across from the Cafe. Our City Desk will operate all day and late into the night, you can come by and discuss the news of the day, what you would like to see in the paper, and whether fried or baked is the better approach.

If you want to join us, see our website at www.blackrockbeacon.org for information, shoot an email to questions (at) blackrockbeacon (dot) org or come by for our daily team meeting at 10:30 a.m. at our camp. Donations can be made via PayPal or credit card on our website.

Lux. Veritas. Lardum.”

VOLUNTEER TO BE A TEMPLE GUARDIAN

DhammaSeeker writes:

“Behind the Temple stands a group that has quietly watched over those structures each year since 2002. The main duty of the Temple Guardians is to protect the Temple and all of those who visit it. We stand with love for the Temple and everything that it stands for.

Temple Guardian shifts run 4 hours each, 24 hours a day.

During your Temple shift, there are a number of duties you may be asked to perform. Guardians keep watch for injuries and unsafe conditions, including fire, climbing, vehicle traffic, and problems with the structure. We do not make rules, nor are we enforcers; we watch quietly and act skillfully when necessary to protect the safety and sacred space of the Temple.

Most of all we provide the Temple with grounding and love. We follow a philosophy that says small pushes from a great distance help keep the Temple a serene space. When we do interact with participants, we do so with love, carrying the sacred space of the Temple with us in to every interaction.

On Sunday, Guardians maintain the perimeter with the Black Rock Rangers and Temple Crew for the Temple burn.

If the Temple has a special place in your heart, join us and help create the space for another to have the wonder that brought you back.

To join our group, please email templeguardians@templeguardians.org.”

PERFORM, SPEAK OR VOLUNTEER AT THE CENTER CAMP CAFE PERFORMANCE STAGE

1.) Aerial in the Cafe

We have a small aeiral rig in the center camp cafe which we are providing for experienced aerialists who want to share their act with the community. The rig is small in size: 18.5′ tall by 11′ wide and will only accommodate STATIC single or double-point acts which do not involve swinging, hoisting or ellipses. You must have your own apparatus, which will be inspected and rigged by our rigger (my name here?). We emphasize that this is an invitation for experienced aerialists who have a developed act only, it is not a training rig. In order to get scheduled, either email karl (at) burningman (dot) com before August 15th or come to the center camp cafe sound booth from Monday thru Thursday between 5 and 6pm to meet Karl and talk to him about scheduling your gift.

2.) Occupy the Imagination Speaker Series

To all you geeky, sexy Nerds, thinkers, general miscreants who like to challenge your assumptions and knowledge:

Occupy the imagination is a opportunity to participate intellectually at Burning Man. Drop your ego. Challenge your Id. Blow minds or have them blown. Occupy the Imagination is a public forum created to inspire dialogue between burners through moderated talks. These talks range from protest movements, sustainability, technology, expanding consciousness, The past, present and future of BM, The ethos and 10 principals of BM and how they can be applied in other real life situations and many other things. The speaker series is happening in Center Camp on the Spoken word and Performance stages daily.

To learn more and submit a proposal, go here: http://bit.ly/KojW5b

3.) Come Volunteer at the Center Camp Cafe Performance Stage!

The Center Camp Cafe stages offer, without citation or reference, the most strange and eclectic gathering of talent in the world. It brings instruments and musicians to audiences that cannot always be predicted or described, and it services the ears and eyes of Black Rock City for 24 hours a day, every day of the event. This herculean task cannot be done without the assistance of the community, and we implore you to join us at the stage. We need a wide range of talents for a variety of duties. Three duties, in fact.

Stage managers wrangle the talent, keep the stage (somewhat) organized and on time, and manage the big picture of our little stage.

Gear Gods build up and tear down the stage, very quickly, very often; you need to have a basic knowledge of how rigs work, where cords plug, and speak a bit of musician-ese.

Sound Engineers run the board. They fondle the knobs and caress the dials. Sound can be funny out there; the engineer needs to hear the dust caked speaker and make it sing, not cough.

If you want to grace us with your skills and presence, email themitch (at) burningman (dot) com. Let him know what position suits your fancy and when you want to work. From there, we’re sure something strange but appropriate will occur.

CALLING ALL EDU-BURNERS!

Jennifer writes:

“The goal of BREC is to create a staff development opportunity unlike any other- where we help each other to bring the magic home to our students. Teach a workshop! Collaborate on lesson plans! Bring home a slick flyer to prove to your administration that the art festival you missed the first week of school to go to is semi-legitimate!

As opening day approaches, we’re putting together this year’s sessions. Look for us in the What, Where, When for this year. I’m still looking for a few more speakers, so if you’re interested, shoot me an email with “BREC Presenter” in the subject line (so I don’t lose it in the vast wasteland of my inbox in the midst of BM prep.) If you need an invite letter, please ask soon! Put “BREC Invite Request” in the subject line and don’t forget to tell me who it should be addressed to, and the address so I can keep it as professional looking as possible.

The final conference flyer pdf will go out in a few weeks (typically the week before the burn) and I’ll have printed copies on site for you to bring home to your various administrators. If you haven’t liked our page yet, please check it out at www.facebook.com/BlackRockEducatorsConsortium. I post the flyers there, and it’s a good place to get announcements.

BREC 2012 will be held on Weds and Thurs from noon to 4 at Lahontan Korps, in Gigsville (3:30, E-G.) LK is the giant camo net camp, and we’ll have bright signs on the main streets directing you in.

Send questions and requests to JennNelson3 (at) gmail (dot) com (make sure to put BREC in the subject line,) or to our FB page!”

RECYCLE OLD COSTUMES AT KOSTUME KULT

Costume Jim writes:

“Kostume Kult is BAAAACKKK but in a brand new location at *** 2:45 and Esplanade*** within Nyrvana Village. Every year we recycle hundreds of pounds of costumery and fancy fashion items donated by costume companies, theater groups and burners like YOU whose closets and other crevices are bursting with costumery of days-gone-by. So please consider giving these items one last big hurrah — on the backs, butts and boobs of your Burner brethren and sistren whose burns you could greatly enhance with your gift. So come find the Kostume Dome next to the Nyrvana Village arch at 2:45 and esplanade or email us at Squamazon (at) gmail (dot) com to ship to our costume drop location in Davis, CA. (Receiving deadline August 17th!). Or come by to help give costumes away!”

SEEKING SMALL GIFTS OF METAL FOR THE UK REGIONAL CORE PROJECT

This is pretty neat (file under: what CAN you do at Burning Man?). Romy writes:

“This year, the UK Regional Burning Man Community will create one of the largest collaborative art projects from this side of the pond as part of the Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE). The ‘Tower of Nowhere’ is a 20-foot bell tower and a physical manifestation of our community. It represents our hopes, dreams, memories, life, death and eventually, rebirth.

The bell founding will take place on Tuesday, August 28th 2012, at night, beside the Tower of Nowhere. We will cast five bells, one large central one which hangs as the centrepiece. This bell will be encircled by four others, hung on each support.

You are invited to donate small gifts of metal to the molten metal, in order to become a part of one of the bells yourself. We are looking for token amounts of metals. This ritual is about everyone coming together and making the bells with cherished memories. Maybe donate that ring from an old girlfriend that you just can’t throw away, or that copper bracelet you never wear which has been sitting in your jewelry box for decades. The emphasis is on small, meaningful, symbolic and ritualistic.

What metal is good to go in?
– Most rings and earrings are good to go
– Metals with low melting points, such as copper, bronze, brass, tin, pewter, gold, silver, zinc, aluminium, led
– US pennies are good to go in

And what is NOT good to go in?
– Most piercing materials are made of titanium and surgical steels , so not good
– Metal jewellery with set stone aren’t good
– No keys
– Metals with high melting points like such steel, mild steel, stainless steel, titanium cannot go in

We will start the furnace at sunset, around 7:30pm, and will be going for 2 to 3 hours. The making of the ‘Greeters’ bell will start from 9:00pm sharp. If you can’t make this event but would like to gift some material to the bell, come and find us at the Tower of Nowhere. The UK CORE team will be at there all of Tuesday, or on Monday when there will be a box for you to put your gifts in.”

NATURALISTS WANTED FOR BURNING MAN NATURE WALKS

We invite you to participate with the nature walks as a guest expert about some aspect of the desert. Biologists, geologists, birders, historians, desert rats – anyone who’d like to share their knowledge in the field. You can research a subject for a short talk, or just come explore and show what you know. To volunteer, contact swampburner (at) gmail (dot) com. THE DREAM BOX

This comes from Teddy, the guy who made last years Dr Seuss video … you remember that, right? Yeah you do.

“Today I launched a Kickstarter campaign for a project that is designed to make peoples dreams come true.

It’s called The Dream Box. It is a solar powered video booth that is going to the playa, where people will be able to walk into it and record a statement of their own dreams into an HD camera. It will be functional 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. After the Burn I will then take all of the most beautiful, heartfelt dreams and make them into a film for the world to see. This way the world can directly respond to the people of Burning Man via email and help make their dreams come true.

Here is the Project:

Many many thanks,
