**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Greetings and welcome to this edition of the JRS, wherein we answer the hot question dancing on the tip of your tongues … WHAT IS THE 2013 ART THEME? We got that for you riiiight down there. We think you’ll like it. We certainly do.

As for the other question — tickets — we don’t have the details yet (soon, we promise), BUT Caveat Magister recently wrote a fascinating post for the Burning Blog that ponders some interesting questions regarding Burning Man and tickets. Check it out in the ROUND UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS section.

OK then … as usual, we’ve got a wide variety of offerings for you, including information about Burners Without Borders activities in response to Hurricane Sandy (get involved!), an opportunity to work for Burning Man (yes, mom, it’s actually job), George Post’s fantastic book featuring 21 years of Burning Man photography (holy bejeezus!), and an excellent time-lapse video from this year’s event that we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

So with that, let us say that we hope your holiday calendar is filling up nicely with friends, family and frivolity.

The Man burns in 274 days!

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS AND HURRICANE SANDY

The folks coordinating the Burners Without Borders response to Hurricane Sandy write:

“Destroying a neighborhood, in order to rebuild it: Burners Without Borders and Hurricane Sandy … what’s happening, and how you can help (or, how to turn $30,000 into $1.6 million in a month).

We’ve all heard about Hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact, and Burners all over the country have been responding in all kinds of ways, many with the Occupy Sandy efforts.

For some Sandy brought back memories of Hurricane Katrina, which inspired the creation of BWB. Within days of Sandy, Richard Scott, a founding member of BWB and former head of the Art Support Services Team of the DPW, was on his way to the Jersey Shore to assess where we could help the most.

That place is Union Beach, a small, year round working community absolutely devastated by Hurricane Sandy. (See some of the devastation here http://bit.ly/QPOpCq ) There are over 160 houses that need to be demolished, expensive work that would bankrupt the town. Union Beach asked if BWB could help–and who better to knock a city down so that it can get back up, but Burners? In true playa-synchronicity style, Richard connected with Michael Craddock, a local Burner who had volunteered with BWB/Pisco sin Fronteras doing earthquake relief in Chile, and Michael’s dad owned heavy machinery he was willing to donate to do the heavy lifting of recovery work. Since then, volunteers Jovia Nierenberg & Brenda Zimmerman have shown up to organize the logistics of a long term relief operation.

If BWB-Sandy can demolish all these houses, it will be doing free work worth over $1.6 million, between now and the end of the year. After that, we may go to other communities–if we can, and this is where you come in. We now have the people, and the tools, and the place — the only thing we need now is food and fuel for this growing team. We need to raise $30,000 to fund this all-volunteer, no-cost-to-homeowners gift program.

Support is pouring in — we’ve already received $12,000 (including one anonymous $10,000 donation!), and some amazing fundraisers are happening: DelRey Bach, FL, December 1st, Advance screening of “Burning Man and the meaning of life,” portion of proceeds to BWB-Sandy www.jpifproductions.com, San Francisco, December 7th at Book Club, organized by Partners & SUTRO, details here: http://paperless.ly/UZUj1b, rsvp to anthony (at) 543howard (dot) com Los Angeles, December 15th, BurnLA, The Cruz Coalition & The LA League of Arts are joining forces for a great cause to present the 1st Annual White Blissmass Charity Ball: http://www.facebook.com/events/168101543332273/ Want to organize a benefit? Let us know how we can help!

BWB-Sandy is also networking with area groups in beach and community space clean ups, including supporting Ocean Action Network on a statewide event on December 8th.

THE GAYBORHOOD WANTS YOU!

Toaster writes:

“Greetings all you lovely burners, burgins and artistic antagonistos! This is Toaster, and I would like you to know and perhaps join us in participation within our little community and how we are participating in the rest of the community as well.

THE GAYBORHOOD: As you may know this existed long before there was any web site and this whole project but it has been a source of dialog in the last year. This year the Gayborhood was its strongest. NOT because we are queerer but we are grateful to a wonderous placement team.

While we cater to the LGBTQ++ not all of our members are specifically represented under that acronym. I talked to a vocal member of our community recently (the Burning Man community) and asked him if he would work with me on Queer Burners and his immediate reaction was ‘I’m not gay’. It’s not at all about that.

If NOTHING ELSE TAKE AWAY THIS:
* the web site and its content is just a platform for lgbtq++ to connect with each other and anyone else who wants to enjoy our vibe, too; there is no point where there is a pass/fail for who or… hmmm you make nookie with
* we are all powerfully committed to the 10 principles and a majority of us carry this in our daily lives – too
* we actively engage our community and the community at large with SUPREME Radical Inclusion

The Gayborhood, Gayburbs, Gayburbia or even the Gay Ghetto: whatever you call it are nothing more than pockets where people of all corners have camped or visited. Many of us find safety in coallessing into one giant village like any other out there every year. We are planning on a campout sometime soon in early 2013 and joining 1 or 2 Regional Events as ‘The Village Q’. For more information please check out any of the following links:

A Final Footnote
The 10 Principles +1 (being Grateful) is always with us and everything we do as camps, individuals, villages and as participants in anything we do. I do not speak for anyone else but me; so my posts on the site have my name on them. We have great great people who I get to do some cool stuff with all over the burner community.

I can’t help but point out just a couple of the most outstanding examples of Community and Gifting that have come out of camps/groups who reside in the community:

* Comfort & Joy and their highly successful and evolved canned food drive annually for the Native Americans whose land is in the Black Rock Desert http://playajoy.org/

* Out of Los Angeles is ‘Payasos’ which is Spanish for Clown where members of Dickstracted Camp do so many fund raisers for their community. It started off for kids with clef pallets but has grown in many directions! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Payasos/102950689767779?ref=ts&fref=ts

DISTRIKT WANTS YOUR ART!

The DISTRIKT folks write:

“From our inception over a decade ago, our goal has been to provide a great daytime vibe of music, dancing, and alternative arts at Burning Man. We live and breathe our ideals year around, and look forward to giving back to the community that has inspired and bonded us together. So, once again this year we are proud to annouce the 2013 DISTRIKT Art Grant!

We will provide up to $5000 for one or more art installations to be showcased at DISTRIKT during Burning Man 2013. The art should blend and interact with DISTRIKT (i.e.- extremely fragile nighttime-oriented installations won’t make sense at a crowded and energetic camp operating during the day.) Other than that, the sky’s the limit!

As with grants from BRAF or Burning Man itself, this is not a commission — the art is yours to keep. We simply provide funding and a venue within which to showcase your creation. Though we’d love to have you, camping with or becoming a member of DISTRIKT isn’t a requirement. If you’re interested and feel your installation would be a good fit at DISTRIKT, please follow the following instructions.

Timeline/Process:
Email Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to grants (at) distriktcamp (dot) org no later than December 31st 2012.
The LOI should include the following information
-Name of artist or collective
-Name phone number, email address, and mailing address of contact person
-Name of project or program
-Amount requested up to $5000
-Brief description of project, and how it fits the ethos of DISTRIKT (400 words or less)
-Attachment or link to images or conceptual drawings

Invitations for proposals, along with further instructions, will be extended no later than January 15th, 2013. Proposals are accepted by invitation only, and are due February 15th, 2013. Selected grantees are notified March 1st, 2013. Initial funding released to new grantees by March 15th, 2013. Finally, regardless of how Burning Man decides to conduct ticket sales this year, please note that we can work with the winner(s) to procure tickets if necessary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at grants (at) distriktcamp (dot) org and we will do our best to respond quickly. Now bring it on!!

With love, Your DISTRIKT Governors”

A GIVING TREE – BENEFIT IN SUPPORT OF BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS – SF, CA – DEC 7

We don’t normally post local fundraising events (because many of you don’t care, if you’re not in the immediate vicinity, right?), but this one has a great message attached to it that’s worth bringing to your attention. So this is a special case … Ariel Sutro (Bay Area Administrator for the 2011 Trojan Horse & Co-Founder of Vertical Camp) writes to tell us of her company’s holiday fundraising party to support Burners Without Borders:

“Partners & Sutro was forged out of relationships and experiences at Burning Man. After building Vertical Camp for 5 years, and then the Horse four of us got together and decided to make our Burning community our ‘real life’. A year ago we started a business together – and our office and event space, Book Club, has become a vibrant community space we can share for events like this. The holidays are a good time to ask ourselves what we can do for others. Burners Without Borders is particularly special – because you know the donated dollars go directly to work. The ‘boots on the ground’ Burner gift force is inspiring to all – we are happy to support their efforts, and motivate our friends and business partners to do so as well.

We’re creating ‘A Giving Tree’ to support the current cleanup in NJ. Guests will decorate the tree with their cash and checks, and ornaments they’ll make from housing scraps BWB is sending out from NJ. Many in our community are offering to help – we’ve already raised $500 from people who can’t make the event and St. George Artisan Distillery is sending over 3 cases of their spirits.

Saturday morning our $10,000 donation will hit NJ and the crews will immediately put it to work.

5MPH? DAMN, THAT’S SLOW!

There must be a method to our madness, right? We don’t just think that driving slower than your car naturally idles is fun, promise. The reasons for the super-low speed limit (5mph) are many, but we can group ’em into two buckets: enjoyment and safety.

Enjoyment! Let’s start here. If everyone driving past your camp is going 5mph, they’re not kicking up dust (much, anyway) and crop-dusting your camp. They’re going slow enough to look you in the eye. Burning Man has begun … slow down … take the time to soak it in and enjoy your surroundings.

Safety! Let’s face it, BRC can seem like somebody kicked an anthill — it’s madness out there. Driving at 5mph, you’re more likely to see the blitzkrieg of pedestrians, bikers, artworks and whatever-the-hell-THAT-was’s in your path — especially at night. Seriously, you don’t want to be the guy who ran that dude over, cuz that would completely suck.

Patience is a virtue, dusty friends. Let’s not trash the playa surface, choke out our neighbors, nor miss the opportunity to connect. Slow it down. You’ll get there, promise.
