REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES OF BURNERS LOST: 2012-2013

Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those people who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

24 HOURS OF BURNING MAN — WHY THE NOSE?

Mark Day writes:

“I went to Burning Man 2012 for 24 hours. It was a last-minute decision and when I knew I was really going for ‘the day’ I tried as much as possible to leave 24 hours after I arrived, to give myself more of an ‘I have a project’ theme. I was there on Friday, which meant dealing with what I was told was the worst night time weather. I don’t recommend going for a day, but it’s more fun than not going…..while there, I made this video (the second I’ve made on-playa for the Why the Nose project):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0LE_rYj05w

I documented the whole 24 hour experience here:

CAMP UP BUILDS A CLIMBING WALL AT BURNING MAN

Spenser writes:

“In 2011, four climbers built a 14 foot tall, 26 foot wide climbing wall and brought it out to Black Rock City. We are Camp UP, and we put together a little video and article about our time at the 4:30 plaza. Shout outs to our neighbors at Rapper’s Delight and Camp Do Nothing, and a big thanks to everyone who donated money, gear, or encouragement. What a year…

SHARE THE LOVE: VALENTINE CARD CRAFTING FROM HOME

You don’t need to play Cupid, just put on your best cherub smile and help us craft some Valentine’s Day Cards. On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, the Burning Man Project will join the Glide Foundation in San Francisco by helping to serve dinner to over 700 guests on this happiest of hearts day! That is about 750 Valentine cards. We are going to makes some of those cards at Burning Man Headquarters, but if you do not live close enough to participate in our craft evenings, you are welcome to make some from the comfort of your home. Please contact RebeccaZito (at) burningmanproject (dot) org for details about crafting the Valentines.

GET YOUR HAM RADIO LICENSE IN JUST ONE DAY

Communication on the playa at Burning Man can be challenging. FRS radios, while cheap, have limited range and their channels get clogged. Not so with ham radio! The channels are clear and coverage out in the desert is excellent.

“But don’t you need a license for ham radio?” You do. But you can get your license in just one day — it’s easy and it costs just $15. The non-profit Black Rock Amateur Radio Association will be teaching a “ham cram” and then giving a license exam on Sunday, March 17, in San Francisco. This is the perfect opportunity to become part of a fun and interesting hobby and improve your camp’s communications situation at the same time.

For details please see http://cq-blackrock.org/hamcram-2013.php. Important: you must sign up in advance at http://cq-blackrock.org/signup.php. Questions? Email hamcram (at) cq-blackrock (dot) org.

[Editor’s Note: Speaking of which, Burning Man has its own email list for HAMs to coordinate their activities on playa, and for general radio related geeking. Subscribe by sending an email to: burningham-list-subscribe (at) burningman (dot) com ]

CARRY A CUP!

Veteran Burners will tell you it’s good practice to carry a cup wherever you go on playa … the ones that somehow clip to your pack or your person (or your piercing? ew.) are particularly handy, as are the military-style ones that fold down to barely nothin’. Why? We’re a gift economy, and odds are extraordinarily high that if you’re cruising Black Rock City, *somebody’s* going to offer you a drink at some point … and if you’ve got your cup in hand, you’ll be ready.

It’s also good form to not use the cups at camps you visit, leaving THEM to deal with the resulting washing-up or MOOP. People will love you for being so thoughtful, and your thirst will be handled. Win win.

(Of course, it’s the environmentally friendly way to go too, but you knew that part.)
