**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** IT. IS. AUGUST.

Let’s just let that sink a little bit, shall we? Mmmmmm.

OK now start panicking. And here we go …….

This past Sunday, the Golden Spike was ceremoniously pounded into the playa, marking the center — and beginning — of Black Rock City 2013. Lucky for us, John Curley was there, and brings us this report along with his usual GORGEOUS pictures … like he does. http://bit.ly/1ec6XlL

Yes, our intrepid Department of Public Works (DPW) crew is out in Gerlach, starting the magic act that is the manifestation of Black Rock City’s infrastructure … soon they will have constructed a 9+ mile perimeter trash fence by hand, whereupon they’ll be moving from their Gerlach trailer park home to the vast vacant expanse, to sleep under a blanket of stars in the Black Rock Desert. It’s all happening ……

Next step is for YOU to crank it up into high gear and get ready to join the rest of your fellow Burners in this grand experiment of creativity, art, ingenuity and awesome. And we. Can’t. Wait.

OMFG the Man burns in 30 days!

RECORD YOUR PROMO FOR BURNING MAN INFORMATION RADIO (BMIR)

BMIR (Burning Man Information Radio) is a great way to let the citizens of Black Rock City know about your theme camps, art installations and events. Right now is the perfect time to record a promotional spot that we’ll play on the air repeatedly!

While BMIR is online year-round at http://bmir.org, they start playing Burning Man 2013 promos beginning August 1! On August 21, they’ll start broadcasting LIVE from the playa, 24 hours a day. Across the city, people will be tuning in to 94.5 FM to hear late-breaking news, weather reports and YOUR announcements. Lots of Burners stream BMIR on their smartphones as they travel to the playa so they’ll know all about your cool events! Info about how to record a promo for BMIR using free software (no experience needed) can be found here:

http://tinyurl.com/o2oh6cj

BURNER EXPRESS SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE TO BRC – RESERVE YOUR SPOT NOW!

In an effort to reduce traffic and limit the environmental impact of our event, Burning Man organizers are offering the Burner Express bus service with pickups in San Francisco and the Reno airport to Black Rock City and back. This service offers early arrival, speedier entrance, ticket pick up, reserved camping and quicker departures.

2013 HEALTH DEPARTMENT PERMITS – FOOD PERMITS

In order to fight the threat of food-borne illness on the playa, the Nevada State Health Division (NSHD) has requirements for camps preparing food including the need of a health permit and an inspection. You must apply for and be permitted as a Temporary Food Establishment by the NSHD if:

* You wish to share, cook or serve food or non-alcoholic beverages to the general Burning Man population (gifting food).

* You will be cooking or serving food to large groups of more than 125* FELLOW CAMPERS of your theme camp on a consistent basis.

(If you have a communal kitchen shared by 125 or more campers, but meals are prepared individually, or in smaller quantities than for 125 persons, a permit is not required, however we highly recommend you research and review safe food handling practices, starting with the Nevada Division of Health information). Here are the permit procedures and deadlines:

If you have already applied for a permit, you should be receiving instructions in the mail soon. If you are planning to make and give away food or drinks to the public on the playa including fresh squeezed juice, coffee with dairy, or even snow cones, you need a permit. Here’s the scoop from Cindy Ulch, Supervisor with the Nevada State Health Divisions Environmental Health Program:

The only application any camp needs is the “Food Permit Application for Burning Man” found here: http://health.nv.gov/BFHS_EHS.htm

Look for the flame icon at the bottom of the website for this application and other food safety information and guidelines regarding Burning Man.

DEADLINES:

Via Mail: We must have sufficient time to be able to process the application and send back a letter of confirmation. So they need to be received at Ellen Kunz’s office in Winnemucca no later than one week before the event – FRIDAY AUGUST 16th.

Don’t wait until the last minute. It would be a shame to have to cancel your plans, or even risk being closed at the event. That mailing address is NSHD – PHCS 475 West Haskell Street Suite 38, Winnemucca, NV 89445.

In person: No later than THURSDAY AUGUST 22nd –

4150 Technology Way Suite 100, Carson City, NV.
Phone: (775) 687-7550

or

475 West Haskell Street Suite 38 Winnemucca, NV.
Phone (775) 623-6588.

On the application, the event coordinator is “Burning Man”. Leave the location blank, unless you know what street and intersection you be at during the event. After mailing the application and $50 USD payment, all anyone needs to do is come and pick up their permit at Playa Info in Center Camp during the following days and hours: Sunday August 25th through Friday August 30th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

We do this so that we can get an accurate camp location from which to do inspections. WE are NOT issuing new permits at Playa Info.

IMPORTANT: A NUMBER OF CAMPS LAST YEAR DID NOT COMPLETE THE PERMIT PROCESS BY PICKING UP THEIR PERMIT AT PLAYA INFO AND RECEIVING THEIR INSPECTION. NOT COMPLETING THE PROCESS IS THE SAME AS NOT BEING PERMITTED. DON’T BE SHUT DOWN. YOU MUST PICK UP YOUR PERMIT AND BE INSPECTED TO BE IN COMPLIANCE.

Please contact Ellen Kunz (775) 623-6588

EXODUS WAS GREAT LAST YEAR! WHY? HOW CAN WE DO IT AGAIN? WE NEED *YOUR* HELP.

The most common question Burning Man’s Gate, Perimeter & Exodus Manager received after the 2012 event was “What did you guys do to make Exodus so much better?”.

The short answer is that YOU were a major part of the solution. You spread out your departures over enough days and times, and did it in a fairly balanced way. That is the most effective solution to reducing Exodus wait times. Let’s do that again, shall we?

Kristy shares great tips on how to make an Exodus plan as part of your Burning Man preparations:

I’M SCARED TO GO TO BURNING MAN

Jon Mitchell is a wussy. Ohhh now, we kid. Check out his latest post on the Burning Blog. “Black Rock City is a scary place. It’s eerily familiar every year, but nothing is ever quite where you left it.” It’s a beautiful piece of writing, and we hope you enjoy it:

YOUR FUNERAL 2012 FILM

Jonesy writes:

“Have you ever wanted to attend your own funeral? Ever wondered what it would be like to lay in a casket while your loved ones pine for or berate you? Would you want The Traditional Catholic? The Irish Wake? The Sky Burial? The Viking?

For Burning Man 2012, we worked with 13 participants ahead of the burn to attend to their last wishes, provide accoutrements for, and create the funeral of their dreams. Outside these scheduled events, the funeral parlor was open for drop-ins and impromptu ceremonies.

Watch the 12 minute documentary here: www.YourFuneral2012.com And, our deepest condolences for your passing.”

BURNER MAP UPGRADE: NOW PRINT MAILING LABELS!!!

Our good friend Nutmeg Alfredo (what alfredo is complete without nutmeg?) tells us of an exciting new development: The Burner Map can now be used to create mailing labels! You can create cards and letters, attach your mailing labels and send your friends mail on the playa. You can play this game from home, or save some postage, go to Burning Man, and put the letters into the hands of friends or strangers and have them deliver your mail! Black Rock City International Post Office (PO9) at 9 o’clock plaza or BRC3PO at 3 o’clock plaza will take those letters and packages and make sure they get to their final destination, as well.

https://burnermap.com/map/ (facebook app)

AND PO9 has trainings for working windows every day at 10am or whenever you show up to ‘volunteer’. We’re a very fun and interactive large-scale improv theater camp.

For more information or to get involved in Postal Activity, please see one of the following websites

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO YOUR VIRGIN BURNER SELF?

Awkwürd says:

“The Virgin Letters Project is coming back to the playa.

Write a letter to the Burning Man virgin you were. What would you have liked to know? What you have said if you now were sitting in the car with your virgin self as you drove up Gate Road for the first time?

We are collecting letters online and at Regional Burn events. These letters will be delivered on playa to this year’s virgins.

VLP will be collecting online letters through Monday Aug 19 and on playa at Black Rock Spatial Delivery.

“BRC WEEKLY” NEWSPAPER SEEKS PRE-PLAYA SUBMISSIONS!

We’ll preface this by saying we’re TOTALLY sending in poetry. There’s gonna be sonnets all up in this biatch. Adrian tells us:

“From the creators of the legendary ‘Piss Clear’ — Black Rock City’s much-loved alternative newspaper — comes the ‘BRC Weekly,’ now in its 4th year of publication, with a circulation of 30,000 on the playa.

To check out previous issues, click here:
http://BRCWeekly.com

We are currently working on our best issue ever, and seeking submissions for articles, features, etc. Here’s what we’re looking for:

– Interesting articles and rants
– Comics and photographs
– Infographics about Burning Man or Black Rock City
– Items for the Playa Out/In List
– Playa Lingo

Basically, we’re looking for pretty much anything you’d find in any other city’s alternative newsweekly … except that it MUST pertain to Black Rock City. However…

– No poetry!
– No puff pieces about one specific theme camp, art piece, or project. Shameless namedrops are fine, but with so much content out there, we don’t want to devote column inches to any one specific thing out there.

Deadline for submissions is Monday, August 12.

If you’d like to submit something, or for more information, email Adrian at: brcweekly (at) brcweekly (dot) com

BE PART OF SPENCER TUNICK’S ON-PLAYA PHOTO SHOOT

World renowned photographer and 2013 honorarium art grant recipient Spencer Tunick is doing one of his photo shoots on playa this year. Spencer tells us how to be part of this epic experience:

“Desert Spirits by Spencer Tunick
Date/Time(s): Friday, August 30th, 2013 5 a.m. – 7 a.m.
URL: http://spencertunick.com/
Contact Email: projects (at) spencertunick (dot) com

We would like to invite you to POSE NUDE in a group photographic installation by artist Spencer Tunick. Spencer will choose men, women and any gender identity to be part of this unique installation. In order to be chosen we ask that you please send in a low resolution photograph of yourself. Participants will be selected based on photographs submitted to the email: projects (at) spencertunick (dot) com Please send the image sooner rather than later. Most installations by Spencer do not have limits to the number of people participating, nor do they require the submission of a photograph. However, for this art work for Burning Man, there is a cap on the number of people participating due to the specific concept of the work.

We are asking for a photograph because we want to have a wide range of body types and skin tonalities represented in the final work. Although everyone is unique, If you are not chosen, it is simply because we may have reached the amount of people with similar specific characteristics. We apologize in advance if you are not chosen for this particular idea but please do not let it deter you from posing in future works by Spencer where there are no number limits.

Chosen participants will be contacted by email prior to August 24th with: location and further instructions. Please only sign up if you are committed to participating and able to wake up before sunrise (or stay up all night). The work will take place before sunrise in order to utilize the pre-dawn light. You will be in position when the sun rises. You only will be nude for a short period of time. …we know it’s chilly…so you will not be nude until right before the sun rises over the horizon and as the sun hits your body. 5am is just the call time to get you registered. We need everyone to be on time. In exchange for taking part, you will receive by mail, a limited edition print of the art work. PARTICIPANTS ONLY.

Thank you!”

BALKAN MUSICIANS WANTED

Hell yes Balkan music! Sophia says:

“Seeking Balkan musicians for a beautiful playa moment- to play Balkan tunes for a few Bulgarian and Macedonian sunset circle dances. Just came back from Macedonia and I’m feeling the itch to share this a glimpse of this tradition with the festival world!

If I can find musical collaborators, I’ll be leading a few easy-to-follow dances to feel connected as a community through a type of dance I’ve never seen on the playa during my 10 years there! I have one trumpet player and one new tambura player potentially on board- would to love to get accordion and tupan players in there. Even more amazing would be to have gaida, dumbek, and truba/other brass players on board as well.

Time commitment- just getting together on playa for an hour early in the week, probably Tuesday, to go over a few tunes I can send you ahead of time. Dancing moment would be for half an hour, tops, at sunset on Wednesday. If it’s a smash hit, we’ll repeat it 🙂

Ideally you’re already well-versed in Balkan tunes and time signatures- if not, please still message me if you think you could pick up a few tunes on your own!”

TOUR DE CORE: MEET THE ARTISTS – BLACK ROCK CITY, NV – AUGUST 26

Megs says:

“Tour de CORE Monday 7-10pm

Come one, come all to the fabulous Tour de CORE!

The 3rd Annual Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) is comprised of wooden sculptures created by Burning Man Regional groups from around the world. This year’s configuration consists of 4 circles of six effigies placed around the base of the Man, that will burn on Thursday night at 9pm sharp, to create the world’s largest intentional simultaneous Burn!

Meet the Artists! Kicking off the first night on playa, the Tour de CORE will be the prime time to venture out to see the different CORE projects, meet the creators, and hear what the CORE Teams want to share about their outstanding projects. The focus of Tour de CORE is to offer a Community Celebration, a Grande Fête if you will, of the achievements of the teams and their regions.

The ‘Tour de CORE’ will take place on Monday night, from 7pm – 10pm, and the focus will be to take the pressure off the effigy teams, and have the rest of BRC show their appreciation for all of their hard work. Join us in showing community support, encouragement & kudos for CORE’s dedication to the expansion of the Regional Network out in the default world.

We are encouraging as many art cars, music cars, food cars, performers and performance troupes to come out to the Circle on Monday night to celebrate CORE. We are looking for a few more smaller art cars to act as shuttle transport to take participants around to each effigy. Contact core2013 (at) burningman (dot) com if you have an art car and able to commit to being out there Monday night from 7-10pm.

Yes! For a week each year, Black Rock City is a fully-functioning urban metropolis, including most of the trappings of a ‘normal’ city, including … WAIT FOR IT … mail service!

How in the heck would I address the mail? Glad you asked. Here’s an example:

NAME: Quality Control
CAMP (and village, if relevant): Amanilandia
