**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** And here we go … the OMG Last Chance Ticket Sale has come and gone, and 4000 tickets were sold … so that’s 4000 more amazing people who will be joining us in Black Rock City! Right. On. Welcome, everybody!

Meanwhile …

John Curley is in the Black Rock Desert as we speak (type), chronicling the building of Black Rock City 2013. He starts with the Golden Spike, and heads on to Fence Day (http://bit.ly/197XkYB), during which the hearty DPW crew installs (by HAND) 9.2 miles of perimeter trash fence in as many hours, setting a new record. Un-be-LIEVable. Follow along … it’s an amazing ride (including the epic rainstorm that hit the playa last night):

We’re in the home stretch to the playa, and everybody’s gearing up to make it all happen, including YOU. Woot!

The Man burns in 22 days!

CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS

Whoops.

Gate Road Advisory:

In the Law Enforcement edition of the JRS, we mentioned that you shouldn’t get on top of your car and crack a beer while you’re driving on Gate Road. We should also say: DON’T DO ANYTHING STUPID UNTIL YOU’RE ACTUALLY *IN* BLACK ROCK CITY AND PARKED AT YOUR CAMP.

Law Enforcement patrols Gate Road heavily, especially between Greeters and the City itself. If they catch you speeding (like even 1mph over!), driving with an open container, sporting broken tail lights or an obscured license plate, and — yes — riding on the top of your vehicle, THEY WILL STOP YOU AND CITE YOU … and starting your Burn that way would suck.

And remember your rights … a Law Enforcement officer must have probable cause in order to search you or your vehicle.

Mutant Vehicle Licensing:

We also mentioned that Mutant Vehicles should get their license before fully mutating their vehicle. In fact, MV owners are *required* to fully mutate their vehicle before they’re licensed so the DMV knows what it is they’re licensing. Makes sense, right? Right.

Stolen Cameras vs. Lost Cameras

You can go to Law Enforcement to report a stolen camera, but only do that if you KNOW somebody stole it. If it’s lost, report it at Playa Info, and see if somebody’s turned it in.

Sorry for the confusion.

2013 UPDATE FOR THE TIME TO BURN IPHONE APP IS AVAILABLE NOW

Wizard writes:

“Almost 2,000 events, 1000 camps, and 400 art installations easily searched, favorited, and shared with your friends. A GPS enabled map of Black Rock City, the entire 2013 Survival Guide, and strange alien experiments all in your hand! Downloaded last year by almost 20,000 citizens of the city, this year we’re aiming for full adoption. (Android version update coming soon)

Find it in the app store. For FREE.”

VIRTUAL PLAYA CLOTHING/GEAR SWAP WITH YERDLE

This is rad. Online gift exchange!

“Yerdle, a free service where people gift items to others in their communities, is inviting Burners to gift items between each other. Use the link below, so you can gift and receive items from other Burners. As you get ready for the Playa, gift items you no longer need (but another Burner might love). Goggles, shade structures, bikes, water containers, costumes, whatever you’ve got that can use a new home; clean out your storage area and start gifting. You may just find that perfect accessory you need as well!

BLACK ROCK CITY SUBWAY

Tired of trudging long distances to get where you want to go in Black Rock City? Sick of dodging pedestrian traffic, weaving bikes and bulky Mutant Vehicles as you make your way to your destination? Thankfully, a solution is at hand.

Get around BRC quickly and easily on the new Black Rock City Subway! This year, the BRCS boasts 10 convenient stations, serving the sites and attractions you most want to see. Trains run every 15 minutes. For more information, including station locations, see:

http://www.blackrockcitysubway.com/

Please be forewarned: access points may drift away from the station markers, and trains may arrive before they depart.

A POMO GARDEN OF EDEN? SLEEPING IN THE DUST AT BURNING MAN

Ron Feldman writes us:

“‘Welcome home!’ the Greeters exclaim when you arrive at BRC. Could this reflect the nostalgia of our Cargo Cult is for the ultimate return home – to Eden? After all, if the Playa isn’t someplace to experience the essence of, ‘For you are dust, And to dust you shall return,’ where is? Ron Feldman writes that the ancient dream of Eden can also be seen as a quest for a messianic future, and that Burning Man might just be a foretaste of this future because, according to the Talmud, ‘Three things are a foretaste of the world-that-is-coming: Sabbath, sunshine, and sexual intercourse’ – all of which he thinks are plentiful on the playa. To read more, see his new essay published in Tikkun magazine, ‘Sleeping in the Dust at Burning Man’.

BURNING EXPECTATIONS

Here’s a beautiful piece of thought-provoking and truth-speaking writing on the Burning Blog about being a second-year Burner, from the great Molly Ditmore:

“I ached to be back on the playa. I came back to BRC ready to do it all over again and my expectations fell flat. Where was the lightning bolt to my psyche?”

PHOTOGRAPHY AT BURNING MAN

Matt Freedman writes:

“Burning Man is one of the most photographically rewarding – and challenging – places you will ever visit. Just protecting your gear from the harsh desert conditions can be challenge enough. To bring home the kinds of images that will stand up in comparison with your memories, you will also have to master lighting, composition, and technique –for photography in general, and for Burning Man in particular. And you will also have to understand the unique social contract between photographers and event participants.”

Matt Melnicki has a cool project:

“Help develop literary culture at BM! ‘Spines’ will be two book cabinets (shaped like lumbar vertebrae), and word artists are encouraged to place their own books inside for gifting! ‘Spines’ will be placed in Center Camp (beside the poetry stage), and somewhere out on the playa. EARTH GUARDIANS NEED YOUR COMPOST BAGS

Sarah Sunrise asks you:

“Do you share my dream of making Burning Man a greener, cleaner, more conscious community full of healthy unicorns and faeries? And do you happen to work for a restaurant, grocery store, or just have a ton of burlap/compostable/plastic mesh produce bags lying around?

I’m looking to collect a TON of bags for a workshop I’m teaching at Earth Guardians: Happy Hour composting! how to collect compost while camping in the desert (M, W, & F: 5-6pm).

Basically, we are looking for bags that biodegrade in compost and/or ‘breathe’ allowing food to dry out quickly in a desert environment before being packed out to an appropriate collection site. In addition to teaching the basics, I’m giving participants a burlap, compostable, or plastic mesh bag and a sign explaining the Do’s and Don’ts.

I’m looking for at least 100 bags, preferably 500+ so let me know how many bags you’ve got and how much (or little) $ you want for them. I live in Oakland and I’m able to collect in many parts of the bay. skoplowicz (at) gmail (dot) com

VIRGIN SACRIFICE FLASH MOB FOR PUSSY RIOT

Dr. Realz says:

“We will be practicing the step the night before the ‘event’ on Wed Aug 28, 5:00 pm for anyone interested at our camp ‘Dr. Realz mysterious wheel of uncertainty and mystical inclusion?’. Here is a description of the event.

Dedication to pussy riot, a sacrifice of virginity Thursday Aug 29, 9:30pm, located at 4:30 and G

Embrace our festival of magic, our goddess of light and love will sacrifice herself. We are hosting a sacrifice of virginity, complete with choreographed dancers and synchronized music and a dance after. What would you be willing to sacrifice for the benefit of good, pussy riot has been imprisoned for peacefully acting out against the will of the church and state and we are dedicating our event to them. We are asking all to sacrifice your worldly attachments if only for a moment and envision the change that is happening. Bring your outrage and lay it at our altar of change. All hooligans, blasphemers, harlots, and heretic are welcome. Bring your pussy riot mask and dress colorful if you are so inclined. The festivities will start at 9:30 pm with our choreographed dancers followed by the sacrifice then join us after for beats spun by our Dj.

“Hoopcamp’s Magical Midnight Mayhem comes to the Playa. Let’s prepare the man for lift-off by circling him with hundreds of flow artists with their LED toys!

Look for Walter, the big VW Bus Art Car. Meet at the Man on the 6:00 side with your LED hoops/poi/staff on Wed. night at 11pm. Hoopcamp Heather will be there to facilitate our circling around the man as we ‘dance our light’ in a big way, spinning magical colors in a connected circle of Hoop Dancers. BLACK ROCK BOUTIQUE NEEDS YOUR CLOTHING AND ACCESSORY DONATIONS

Badboy writes:

“Since 1996, we’ve been helping the fashion hungry citizens of Black Rock City slip into something a little more questionable. Take a few minutes this year to set aside your unwanted playa clothing that you no longer wear, and donate them to the boutique.

We’re at 4:00 and Inner Circle (Center Camp).

We’re open daily (maybe taking Thurs. off) and we will of course be giving away tons of fabulous, funky and furry fashions. Volunteers welcome- especially those with alteration or on the fly sewing skills.”

THE BLACK ROCK BEACON: BACK WITH MORE BACON

Black Rock Beacon, people!

“The Black Rock Beacon is tickled a rosy pink to be announcing our 9th year serving Black Rock City with crispy and chewy morsels of news, views, and totally tangential references to pork-related products.

We will be producing five issues during the week to entertain and inform the record population of our Burning burg. The Beacon is the only paper written and delivered on-Playa.

Beacon Burnalists have already begun to gather information for this year’s papers but we are hungry for more. We have a long list of stories we would like to do, and we need writers to do them. There are also openings for editors, illustrators, schwag-starved delivery folks, and if you’re good at assembling Playatech furniture, we need some extra chairs.

If you know us and love us from past years, please consider making a donation to support our work. We would like to increase our press run; printing the paper our largest expense, and the population keeps growing.

No money? No time to volunteer? No problem. We exist to serve Black Rock City, we are happy if you read our paper. You can also drop by our camp just to say hi, we will be located in Center Camp, 1:00 the Inner Circle of Center Camp, right across from the Cafe. Our City Desk will operate all day and late into the night, you can come by and discuss the news of the day, what you would like to see in the paper, and whether fried or baked is the better approach.

If you want to join us, see our website at www.blackrockbeacon.org for information, shoot an email to questions (at) blackrockbeacon (dot) org or come by for our daily team meeting at 10:30 a.m. at our camp. Donations can be made via PayPal or credit card on our website.”

BERKELEY SPARK EVENT – BERKELEY, CA – AUGUST 10

While this is a local event, and we usually don’t post these on the global JRS, this is a great example of city government officially partnering with community groups to support Burning Man culture … and that? Is cool. From the producers in Berkeley:

“We are honored to be bringing Burning Man’s energy and we are grateful for the support from all of you at Burning Man Project.

It looks like we’re also talking with the filmmaker from ‘Spark: A Burning Man Story’ to screen his film. I’m crossing my fingers for fire performances next year.

WHAT TO DO IF IT RAINS ON PLAYA

In honor of yesterday’s epic rainstorm, which stranded 160 DPW crew members on the playa in the midst of building Black Rock City, we bring you this helpful reminder:

PREPARE FOR ANYTHING: MOTHER NATURE BATS LAST!

Yes, the playa can be subject to sudden bouts of fierce, unpredictable weather. Storm cells, fed by rising thermals that stream upward from the surrounding mountains, may arise in the late afternoon or evening and bring high winds, lightning and rain into camp. Likewise, dust storms can prowl the playa in packs or sweep in a broad front across the plain. Dust storms can produce instant “white outs” but are usually over quickly.

Long, sustained rainfall – or prolonged white out conditions – are unlikely; however, you will want to come to the event mentally and physically prepared for such occurrences. In case of rain:

– DO NOT DRIVE your vehicle. You will become stuck and tear up the playa surface.
– Remain where you are.
– Do not ride your bike. Carry your bike; playa mud clogs wheels and gears in just a few feet.
– Relax and wait until conditions change.
– Bring an extensive first aid kit.
– Bring a battery-powered radio and tune into BMIR, 94.5 FM for updates.
